  1. Yes! You made the right decision! Everyone has this exact moment you are experiencing now! You will be able to eat again. You will enjoy food. I'm 5 years post and I eat anything I want. It will take time. Focus on the positives and the end game! This feeling of regret only last a few weeks and then your focus will shift to introducing new food, portion sizes and most important your weight loss. Get creative with your protein. Make it a large part of your life. It's an extremely important part of your success. I'm 5 years post surgery and still drink my protein. If you are a coffee drinker.. and some Vanilla ensure or the like to your coffee. It will bring you comfort and fill you up. For me, I focused less on what I wasn't able to eat and more on what I could eat that gave me the most satisfaction. You can sip on coffee for hours. you can only eat a few bites of eggs. Soups were another big thing for me in the beginning. Why? Bc I could get down more and didn't feel deprived. If I felt like I wanted something sweet. I'd suck on an orange wedge. Try different things to take your mind off the negatives.. they will pass. You will be able to eat and enjoy food again! Start weight was 355 and I'm 140 now.
  2. Just remember that it will never be as easy to lose the weight as it is in those first months post op when hunger is not an issue (at least for most). I am 11 months out an just started getting my hunger back and I really wish I had lost all my weight before it came back because I can already tell it is going to be much more difficult going forward. You may be losing while eating bad but you aren’t losing as much as you would if you were on plan. Just know that you will be able to have those forbidden foods again eventually. Maybe not four times a week but definitely in moderation. You have gone through so much to get to this point don’t sell yourself short now. You know exactly what you need to do to get back on track. You seriously have for this.
  3. I am a little over 3 months post-op and have already started going back to some of my old eating habits--ordering take out, not separating eating and drinking, eating junk food. This week, I ended up splurging four different times on junk food I struggled with overeating pre-surgery. Luckily, I can't eat more than 3-4 ounces at a time, and I am still losing pretty quickly (down 45 pounds from surgery and 80 total from when I started losing weight in May of last year). I know that won't last though and am terrified of stretching my pouch. I'd still like to lose another 70 pounds but am having a hard time finding the motivation to exercise regularly and measure portions when I'm losing weight even when I eat terribly. Anyone else dealt with this?
  4. Hi there, I had my sleeve done last Mon (2/7) and spent Mon-Fri wondering why in the world I did what I did. I sounded similar to you. Friday was suddenly a real turning point for me. The pain diminished, and I felt so much better, and that helped me so much emotionally. Tues, We, Thurs, I literally could not see any light at the end of the tunnel and said I made the worst mistake. Please know this: I am now in a totally different place, and that happened over a 24 hour period. I woke up this morning, and while I do have one spot of pain at one incision site, the Tylenol really helps and aside from that I felt totally different. I also read too many horror stories about vomiting, dumping, horrible gas pains, and I had none of that. I retched and heaved a couple of times in the hospital, but not after that. You and I don't get to read the hundreds of people who have NO story, just the ones who reach out for help with horror stories. I'll be honest- those first 72 hours I wasn't ready to hear "hold on, you'll get through this" bec I couldn't see myself even getting though the hour! But now that I'm almost a week out, I feel like I'm in a different world! And it's an amazing feeling! Best of luck to you!!!!! Hang in there and stop reading so much...

    Acid Reflux

You could try splitting your meds into 20mg morning and 20 mg night. I found the first 6 to 8 weeks the worst for reflux. After that things settled down. Or another option nexium in the morning and somax at night

    Nausea

Hello all. I hope you are all doing well. I am 4 weeks post op and on softs now. However, everything that I eat gets me super nauseous. I don’t know what it is. I’m staying in the guidelines of what I can and can’t eat, but I am miserable. I haven’t really lost any weight, but I do see the inches disappearing. Has this happened to anyone? What advice can you give because I am getting very depressed?

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I am hitting 3 months post op. I am down 60 lbs and have been stalled for the last two weeks. I am not too concerned about it since I have read so much about it here. It is certainly a tad frustrating but I feel so much better after losing so much so fast that I can see so many benefits to encourage me. The biggest for me is no more CPAP at night. As far as recovery: I can tolerate all fluids and I tolerated wine. I would say 90% of food sits just fine. I am avoiding high sugar and high fat foods obviously and I don’t really miss them. Fish and veggies are easiest for my system. I can swallow larger pieces of food now which is a huge improvement from the first month. Back then if I didn’t chew 30 times per bite I was headed for disaster. I still eat slowly. I have found that when I go out to dinner I talk everyone into some appetizers and then I eat that during the appetizer course and in place of my meal. I space it out over a couple hours while everyone else enjoys the courses. It works for me and my friends don’t really notice since I am always eating. Who knew you could eat some chicken wings over an hour. But not buffalo. Spicy food is still a no go for me. I have had foamies in the first month but not lately and I have still avoided dumping syndrome. I feel like it is going well and I am getting a lot of compliments. I am waiting to lose another 20 before I start investing in nicer clothes. I am looking forward to that. 3X is a bad memory. 2X I can no longer keep on. XL is getting looser.
  8. you're in what we call the "three week stall" (it doesn't always happen the third week - it can really happy any time within the first six weeks or so after surgery, but most of us have it the third week, hence the name). Probably 90% of us experience that early stall. Just keep following your plan and stay off the scale if you need to. It typically lasts 1-3 weeks, but I've heard of some cases where it's gone longer. Just know that as long as you follow your plan to a "T", the stall will break and you'll be on your way again. if you want to read more about it, do a search on this site of the "three week stall" Last time I checked, there were over 17,000 posts on it. And no, I am NOT kidding...

Just venting, gastric bypass in 1 day.

I didn't really consider the surgery until I had a health issue beyond obesity. Once I became diabetic, it was a no-brainer, and all fear was gone, because I've seen the bad ending with diabetes a couple times. Whatever happened on the table, I'd rather face WLS than diabetes. That I got to stay home for 6 weeks, play video games, and save on groceries, just helped seal the deal. 🤷🏽‍♂️ I do wish I had done the surgery sooner in life, when I was well, as you are now. The decade, and more, prior to the surgery would have been so much different. Best of luck to you.
  10. as far as choosing a surgery, if you have GERD, you should strongly consider doing the RNY. If you don't, it really comes down to personal preference. They're both good surgeries, and you'll find people on here who've had success with both. you will have to take vitamins forever with either surgery, so I wouldn't use that as a factor for choosing. There are more consequences if you slack off on vitamins if you have bypass, but still, you have to take them either way. My clinic had both sets of patients on the same vitamin regimen - but some clinics have their sleeve patients on fewer vitamins. yes the first few weeks of recovery can be rough, but once you get through that, it's not that hard. Also, once you get out a ways, there are no restricted foods. You'll just be eating less of them than you do now. good luck with your decision. I don't think there's a wrong choice here. I'm very happy I had surgery and just wish I would have done it earlier.
  11. Hello All, I am new and so happy to have discovered this group. I am almost 3 weeks post op now. I have lost about 12 pounds in these first weeks. I have energy now, but some days I do not. I am really struggling to get all the protein shakes in, the stomach medicine, the liquids and not drinking liquids while I am eating is rough. I am happy with my decision and the results so far. I have a fear it will just STOP. Thanks for the group and I look forward to being more active. - JT
  12. Hi guys. I'm in the process of getting my checklist complete before receiving my surgery date. I am unsure of which procedure I want to get. I am 34 years old, 5'4 @ 225lbs. My BMI is 38.6 and I carry alot of my weight in my abdomen. I have type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and PCOS. I aspire to get pregnant again, but am currently suffering from infertility due to the PCOS. I had my consultation last week and am trying to make my mind up about which surgery is best for me. My doctor is basically letting me chose. Bypass helps eliminate the diabetes, but I'm not fond of the idea of having to take vitamins forever. I am a sweets eater. I love my sweets (cookies/candy)... I'm also feeling a little apprehensive. Hear me out. I want weight loss to happen. I need to lose weight! I’m tired of being the size that I am and how my clothes look on me. I yearn to look cute in the summer and wear the cute crop tops and not have a belly that looks pregnant. I want to look nice in a swimsuit. I want to feel cute in lingerie again. I’m so self conscious of how I look at the weight I am now. But what’s making me so apprehensive is the recovery stage. My buddy from nursing school just had a sleeve done 2 weeks ago and is telling me how rough the recovery period is going for her. I've also read how other peoples recovery processes have gone. It's tough but I know it's doable. I think I may be a little addicted to food. I ate sooooo good yesterday and ENJOYED it so much! I'll be eating good again today with the super bowl menu my husband has prepared. I'm so scared to have to give it up and I’m thinking/doubting if I can stay away once I get surgery. I need to hear a voice of reasoning to slap me out of this feeling I'm feeling. I'd appreciate it.
  13. So now that I’m 3 weeks post op, the last 3 nights barely any sleep because of acid reflux? I already take a 40mg acid reducer every morning. What is anybody doing if anything about the acid reflux.
  14. Hey everyone! I was sleeved on Feb. 1st and I cant wait to have some real food! One more week of full liquids. Any tips, tricks or recipes.... lets here them!

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I love reading this thread and seeing how well everyone is progressing. I had my surgery on November 9th and am now down 72lbs and feeling much better for it. I'm also learning to deal with the stalls and not panicking when they come. Hope everyone is doing well.
  16. Your body is in shock. I am 5 month post op a revision for ulcers and weight gain with my pregnancy (totally my fault). After both surgeries I didn’t really lose more than a few pounds the first month and then it just falls off. I am down 72 pounds at 5 months post op. didn’t get the not caring about food effect I did the first surgery which I like more actually because I can still eat within my diet and still lose weight. I’ve been through several stalls and I just put the scale away for a week or two, do what I am supposed too and keep losing weight :)
  17. Im sure this has been addressed before but has anyone felt some form of depression after gastric sleeve surgery? I did my surgery 4 weeks back and i feel sad, i miss food! it was such a joy for me, i used to look forward to going out for dinner or lunch. Now im wondering will i ever enjoy food again ? Will i ever be able to eat with my family again ? I went out twice with my family for lunch since the operation and i felt soo jealous ! I really wanted to eat and participate in that social activity but i only had tea[emoji24] Im wondering if i did the right decision .... Sent from my SM-G975F using BariatricPal mobile app

    Dipping my toe in!

Hi Crinkles, I'm in Ireland and 3 months post sleeve. The information on this site has been a godsend for me - there are lots of very knowledgeable folks about who are generous with their time and knowledge so whatever question you ask someone will have the answer. I hope the time to your surgery flies in. The first couple of weeks post op is hard but once you get past that you'll never look back!

    No Caffeine

My program allows caffeine. However, on my 5 week preop diet I wasn't allowed anything except the shakes. My first morning in the hospital, they gave me caffeinated lemon tea lol. I have a coffee about once a month now...but I switched to earl grey lattes in the mornings. I use decaffeinated early grey tea, sugar free vanilla syrup and steamed milk (protein!). I am coming up on my 1 year next month, and I haven't gone back to coffee 'full time' yet. Not sure if I will either! I still crave Diet Coke like crazy....but I haven't had it yet either. Just my tea and water (with flavouring) for now. Hope that helps!
  21. Let me get this straight. You're seeking permission from strangers on the internet to break your surgeon's rules, less than one week post-op? And calling approved liquids (an entirely appropriate temporary restriction) "unreal"? <sigh> Good luck. Sounds like you're gonna need it.

    No Caffeine

I stopped cold turkey during my pre-op diet, which was something because I drank a ton of caffeine: coffee, diet sodas, etc. I somehow did not get withdrawals when I stopped, and I can say now it was much easier than I thought! I'm now six months out, and haven't tried it again yet, and am not sure I will. I was tempted to try some caffeine a few weeks ago when I had to attend video meetings based on the South Africa time zone, so online from 2 AM - 10 AM, but I decided not to and was fine. Honestly, I don't miss it. I do miss my coffee ritual in the morning and while I could use decaf coffee, I also realize I'll then be tempted to use creamers and such that will add unwanted calories. I've created a new decaf tea habit and it is quite nice. At some point I'll try caffeine again, but I'm not really driven to do it now.

    Dipping my toe in!

Oh lordy 4 weeks of liquid only ! I forgot that. After a week I could have strained soups and broth and things like Bovril. I was so cold that I was thrilled with my first warm drink. Also milk shakes, coffee and such so it was not as bad as it sounds. Dont bother what you dont like now, your taste buds will change and you can find something you can accept. I have never managed any protein shake or protein water, I am so glad that I did not invest in many.

    Dipping my toe in!

Thank you both! SummerSeeker its nice to see others from the UK on here too! ah yes the pre op! hats off to you for doing 3 weeks! Mine is 2 and I am dreading it! Also worried about the 4 week liquid only diet too. I don't drink milk and I haven't found a milk substitute that I like either so that stage is going to be interesting!

    Dipping my toe in!

Hello Shelley, I am in the UK too, there are a few of us on here. Congrats on getting your date so quickly. It took me 8 months from my first consult which was about 5 months too long. It is normal to be nervous but you will find that its unnecessary. The only thing that I was unprepared for was the tiny portions that I can eat. The time I waited for surgery left me time to read lots of the posts on this forum, I went back 10 years. It has really helped me. I had a 3 week preop diet that I found tough but I knew from here that if I managed 4 days then it would get easier, it did but I could not wait for the surgery to come and end it. Good luck and post away
