    Determining Goal Weight

Neither my surgeon nor my PCP ever mentioned BMI when working with me to set a goal weight. I will never be a "healthy" BMI because that, for me, would be 184 lbs. and I have almost 200 lbs. of lean body mass. So I picked a number based on body fat. For a man, below 25% is average, below 20% is good, and 15% is fit (as in flat stomach, at least for people who don't have a ton of excess skin). So I took my pre-surgery muscle mass, subtracted 10% since I knew I'd lose muscle mass as I lost fat, then added back in 20% body fat, and came up with my goal. Every three months I get a DXA scan because as I work out and lift weights, my muscle IS coming back, so I adjust my goal. Next scan is in March.

90 Minutes of Cardio Every Morning

I run 2-3 days a week and do CrossFit (combination of strength and metabolic conditioning/cardio) 3-4 days a week, so I am always having some amount of cardio-type exercise.
  3. Tummy tuck (included muscle repair no lipo) on 1/19/22 I am 2 weeks PO tomorrow The good: I felt the pain was less than I imagined. I felt sore (and still do slightly) of course but it was far less than I anticipated. The horrible pouch, AKA Joey, is GONE! What a relief! Good riddance to Joey! At my appointment yesterday I was told I am healing VERY fast and ahead of the curve. They said I look more like 4+ weeks. Everything looks good! I’m pleased already with my results even with the above the suture line swelling mid line. The bad: Constipation experience 2-3 days post op (I’ve blocked it out). I won’t get graphic but dear lord this was not good! The pain of this while being sore and stitched up was horrible! Yes, I took all the stuff yo prevent this. However, each time I get surgery this happens to me! I’d rather give birth! The drains…. I knew I would hate them and I did. One drain leaked from the site for 7 days. Once that was removed it helped a lot. The second drain (non leaker) was just removed yesterday so I am feeling like a human! Indigestion and gas have been an issue. It is quite unpleasant to be bloated with when you are stitched up. Advice: You need a person to help the first few days for sure. Changing dressings, emptying drains initially would have been impossible for me if I didn’t have my husband. Don’t try this alone! Get a recliner. We already had an electric one so it helped me a lot. I sleep in it and don’t think I could possibly sleep anywhere else as I am NOT normally a back sleeper. The recliner helps adjust your position so you can find the sweet spot where you don’t hurt. Drink lots of fluids and eat foods that do not create gas. Be kind to yourself. If you are like me, you have wanted this surgery for a long time. Don’t try to do too much so that you cause a complication. Have a firm pillow at hand so you can press on your tummy when trying to get up in the beginning or sneezing/coughing (ugh). I hope this helps someone. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.
  4. Hello, Newbie here! My wife and I travelled to Turkey from the UK last week and both had Gastric Sleeve. Although we both feel "hungry" we have kept to everything we were told. The next stage is approaching and we look forward to some sustenance. Eggs and pureed veg seems to be the plan and some homemade soup. Any recipe ideas for us? And talking of soups what portion sizes should we be aiming for? We are on Day 8 and I am taking a "mug" of Vegimte/Marmite with relative ease. Thanks for letting me (and the boss) join. Lots of questions in the future
  5. I have had problems like you from the get go. Its quite difficult to get to all your protein and water in. At 9 weeks out, I have not, ever reached my goals. I cant do the shakes or drinks either. I have tried all the ones available in the Uk. My dietician says just eat what you can. I still aim for 6 small snack meals a day. Every week I try something different, mostly its a fail but some times I am surprised by a win. Tuna mayo on 2 small crackers went down a treat. Win win. Yesterday I made Mussels in a Thai broth. The 8 small, well chewed mussels went down fine but the broth had to wait to be eaten separately later. Animal meats, no matter how well cooked are still a no no. Bread of any kind - not on your nelly. Vegetables other than in a soup form and in place of a snack meal - no room at the inn. A typical days eating is Breakfast - 75gms yogurt or 30 gms porridge. Lunch - Surimi sticks or a egg mayo. Snack 1 - mushroom soup. Dinner - pate or tuna mayo and crackers. Snack 2 Cheese. Snack 3- fruit ice lolly. I drink milky coffee [ because I am allowed] I have given up on the gummy vitamins and soluble calcium, both give me nausea. I replaced them with tablet form ones. On the plus side, I am less wobbly and able to do more everyday. on the down side I haven't lost any weight for a month. I see my dietician this week so I will see what she says
  6. I'm on day 2, and I'm annoyed. LOL. I have a migraine, and I'm tired, ugh. when you think of it - its a 4 week diet, because 2 weeks afterward!
  7. @MAQ You brought up a great point. I’m on low carb/600 calories, 7 weeks out from revision vsg to rny, and my weight loss has been sooooo slow! Only 5 pounds lost in January! I don’t know what to do and my surgeon’s office has been less than helpful. Since I’m in ketosis, I thought the weight would fall off. I didn’t wanna eat too much fat that’s why I didn’t do Keto and figured I have more than enough stored body fat to use. May I ask what your daily macros are How many grams of fat, carbs, protein do you eat daily?
  8. Hi Kurt, I know how you feel I spent 7 weeks curled up in a ball on my sisters couch feeling like was/ wanted to die. I couldnt/ didn't want to eat or drink. If you go back through my old posts you will see how bad I was feeling. Just try to eat and drink what you can. I couldn't have shakes either because of they way they effected me. I lived on KFC mash potato and gravy then a few chicken nuggets. I was drinking protein water to get my protein in but at this stage don't worry about calories etc because seriously the tiny amount you are eating it's not going to matter. Could your vitamins be causing you issues I know mine did. I also found when I ate later in the evening I felt better in the morning. 1 night a had a maccas sundae and felt amazing the next morning so good in fact I had breakfast. I also found I felt the worst in the mornings and normally struggled to get anything in. I did seek out a psychologist which helped but I think it's just a time thing trust me it gets better. Hope you feel better soon ((hugs)) oh about the 4-5 month mark is when I started to feel better and yes I cried multiple times a day during that period going back to work helped me a lot too got me back into my routine. Ok I will shut up now but feel free to reach out

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Fellow 2/3 here I've been on low carb but not all liquids for 2 weeks, wasn't too bad, wasn't awesome though! Tomorrow I switch to liquid only for the days before surgery, so that'll be fun 😬 I had to go get covid tested today and that came back negative, I'm so relieved because I was super worried I'd be positive randomly. Did a bunch of other pre-op stuff today too, paperwork and consent forms all that jazz. It's finally feeling real, I'm so scare-cited!

    blood pressure

It’s not uncommon for people’s blood pressure to be higher at certain times of the day & lower at others & not just from what they may be doing. Doctors told my father (& now my mother too) to take their BP at about the same time three times a day. This was to establish their natural cycle & pick up any obvious variations. I’ve started taking mine mid morning & mid afternoon but to track my low BP (usually in the 70s over 50s) & heart rate which is also often low too (often in the 60s). Going to start noting what I’ve been doing, eating, drinking when I take my BP as well because of how that can influence your BP too.

    Favorite products

It is great to be thinking about this ahead of time! I agree with Splenda above, taste can change. I started drinking protein shakes a few weeks before surgery. I found two that I liked. After surgery, I have only been able to drink protein shakes on two occasions. They made me vomit. I do use Syntrax Nectar unflavored protein powder, to add to Crystal Light, oatmeal, pancakes, etc.
  12. Hi all! I had surgery on 1/4 and am feeling a little down. I hear it’s normal, but I’m frustrated with the lack of progress. I’m almost 4 weeks out from surgery and down 14 lbs or so. How’s everyone else doing?

    My experience… sleeved on 1/22/22

Thank you all for the support. I had my one week post op appointment today. It went very well. While I was only on semi full liquids at my one week mark I am now on full liquids. (Malt o meal, cream soup, Greek yogurt- and removing fruit juices since those will now be empty calories) Tonight I’m having a little creamy soup rather than broth to see how that sits. I’m supposed to be setting up for 3 meals a day- it just seems like so much! Today I’ve had 54 oz of liquid- 20 of those being a diluted protein shake. (Coffee and a fairlife coffee protein shake) but I was also on the run all day! My appointment was in the morning, followed by a little shopping before meeting a friend at the gym for a walk followed by a hair appointment. I made sure to keep a water bottle on me and keep drinking as much as possible! But now I’m home and EXHAUSTED! Can’t wait to snuggle up with my pup and watch some tv! :)

    Potatoes 5 weeks out

To each their own. Just remember, there are people on here who look to others who’ve had surgery before them. Having WLS is a life changing procedure that includes people having to make certain life changes to ensure it works for them. I am not saying you specifically gave advice to anyone - if you want to openly share that you chose to not obey your doctor and dietician’s plan three days after surgery, so be it. Hopefully people considering surgery and those who just had surgery choose to follow their team’s plans.

    Potatoes 5 weeks out

I'm right behind you with my weight loss. I did have an issue with my teeth which stalled me a bit and I didn't want to consume anything. When I talk to my team they said I was back on track a little bit ahead of expectations and to keep up the good work.
  16. Hi All, I’m two weeks post sleeve. Getting concerned that I don’t feel ‘full’ after 6 tablespoons of food. This is causing me to worry in case I eat too much and cause problems. I’ve not been sick or had dumping syndrome so worried if something is wrong. Terrified that I’ll overeat and stretch my stomach. Has anyone else experienced this or am I just over worrying at the moment? I am assuming that if I ate too much - I would know about it. Appreciate any advice, thanks.

    First Appointment

My first appointment was about 5 minutes long. They weighed me, Took me to a room where a nurse went thru the paperwork and lab test that i brought from my medical record and asked me some questions, Surgeon came in after, explained what gastric sleeve surgery was and quickly read over the nurses notes and that was it. Got a binder with information on the steps needed to complete (Nutrition class, Support group, Psyc Eval) and in the mail a week later i got my lab orders and imaging orders to do.

    Determining Goal Weight

I do exercise - I'm not a gym rat, but I always tried to exercise 5-6 days a week. At first it was mostly walking and water aerobics, since I was too heavy to do much of anything else. I still do those - but I also now do Zumba and bicycling as well. I've also strength-trained off and on (twice a week) - but unfortunately not consistently because I don't really like it. But I recently started using resistance bands, which I like a lot more than the weight machines at my gym - so hopefully I'll keep up with it this time! as for calories, by the end of the first year, I was up around 1000 per day. Second year I was eating around 1200 until I hit maintenance at 20 months out. I then experimented with different ranges to determine my "maintenance range", which is 1500-1700 per day. As long as I stay within that range, I can maintain my weight. But of course that's going to vary for everyone depending on how much muscle you have, how active you are, etc. I know some women who have to eat around 1200 to maintain, and others who can eat 2000....
  19. Had a few of these recently and it's nice to remember it's happening: Showered at the gym (open stalls) - that was a bit of a process because I look pretty buff with my gym clothes on (arms and legs muscular and no loose skin, decent chest definition that's noticeable in a t-shirt), but my torso and the place I sit on look melted without clothes. But I did it. And nobody looked. Freedom. Got hit on by two girls in IKEA. In fact, I had to ask them if I could help them with something as they were staring uncomfortably long, and I've gotten pretty aware of that, having been fat for a long time. They giggled and one said 'oh we just thought you were cute hee-hee'. Oh. Oooh. I am honestly still reminded whenever two things happen: I need to tie my shoelaces or I need to sit on some flimsy chair. What a relief it is to simply ... bend down and tie those damn shoes! And if a chair breaks (thankfully, it never really happened), it's not my fault anymore. I have a 10-hour flight coming up and I've been lucky to get a business seat. Can't wait to feel how nice the extra space is, compared to before when it was absolutely necessary to pay 6x for a seat in the front to fit me.
  20. My surgery is also on the 17ht! I’ve ordered my vitamins, sugar free ice pops and protein shakes. I start my 2 week liquid/ modification site in the 2nd.

    A stall already?

I stalled every second week for the first two months, and the stalls sometimes lasted two weeks. then I'd get one week of weight loss before the next stall. That you made it a whole ten weeks before a stall is really impressive! As others have said - you just have to ride it out while sticking to the program. There's no one rule for how long stalls last, they just last as long as your body needs them to. They're frustrating and boring, but they do break.

9 months post op, weight loss stopped :(

If you're only eating 1000 calories at 9 months out, maybe try bumping that up to 1200 calories for two weeks and see how you do. (You're not going to "balloon"—200 extra calories a day for 14 days is about 0.8 lbs, if bodies were machines.)

9 months post op, weight loss stopped :(

Hi there I’m exactly where you are I’ve been in a 3 month stall from months 6-9 and haven’t lost a single pound although I am about 12 lbs from where my goal was. This is however frustrating as I am eating under 1000 calories exercising 60 minutes daily by walking… the only thing I’ve slowed down on is my water intake which is about 42 oz a day. I’m wondering if this is the reason my weight has stalled…or perhaps it’s due to my exercise since I’m only walking but I do average 3 miles a day. They do say the closer you get to your goal it can literally stop…but this is a very frustrating feeling to have especially since my surgeon said after the one year point the weight loss generally stops….

It is tough I had to cook meals every day for my husband and two sons while i was on liquid and soft stage it was so so hard i just had to keep reminding myself i didnt want to injury my surgery line in my tummy. My son had his birthday and they got cheesecake during that time I did taste it about a pinkie nail amount and got really really ill. I sont know if you can get your hands on crushed ice but if you get some crystal light and put it over crushed ice and chew on that ice it does help woth cravings and the need to chew something. I was on liquids for a month before surgery so for two months i was fixing yummy stuff for my family while i couldnt touch it. Good news is pretty soon it just stopped bothering me. It will get better just stay strong. I feel, my husband agrees, I’m more happy and mellow since surgery. Ill be 6 weeks out Tuesday.

    High Ferritin

how high is it? Mine is almost always above the normal range, and the surgeon just shrugs. I guess it depends on HOW high it is. I'll check my chart and update this in a minute well, the last three years it's been 69, 111, and 205. I'm pretty sure it's been over 200 in earlier years - I'll check. OK. For some reason, only the last three years were on the graph - but I manually looked back on my chart for earlier years. It was always over 200 until I hit that 69 in 2019 - which was surprising because it'd always been in the 200s. But it started going up again in 2020 (to that 111 reading) - and now back in the 200s. High end of the range for women is 200 - so mine usually runs a little above normal. They never said anything about it, so.. if they feel yours is too high, they'll probably have you cut back on your iron supplementation
