Wish I hadn't Told Some...
Pabst replied to WalkOnWaking's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I think it's like anything... ...politics, views on social issues, finances, religion. Once you have a formed opinion or stance... You tend to only indoctrinate yourself with data that supports your claim (because we are so darned smarter than everyone in the room) and you become an apologist for whatever that stance is. If you said "hey, I was thinking about getting LASIK surgery" to a guy who doesn't wear glasses and had a close friend who had a bad experience... From that moment... all that person would see LASIK is as a sight ending bullet to the head and not what it is 99.9% of the time... A simple (yet expensive) life changing procedure that lets you see. I think Bariatric surgery is the same. If you ask a thin athletic person who never stifled with being overweight and is regularly surrounded with thin likeminded people about Bariatric they will probably have prairie dog ears for all the bad and negative stories and completely ignore the success stories. Talk to an overweight person who struggles with weight loss that either is too scared of getting the procedure... Doesn't want to get it because the future limitations scare them or someone who wants it and can't afford it or can't fit it into their daily schedule... Yeah, they are going to balk at it. Talk to anyone who has had it... Even the ones that slipped up or had complications and almost almost them would say that if they could go back in time and not do it, in spite of their failures and complications they wouldn't have changed their mind. People tend to apply bias heavily based off of emotion and less on facts or compelling data. Just keep that in perspective. -
Hello All! My band to RNY revision is scheduled for 9/13. Honestly, my decision for bypass was 2 fold: 1. Complications due to band failure. Even today, after having all of the fluid removed four years ago due to recurrent gastritis and esophageal spasms, I still struggle daily with never knowing what will get stuck, terrible reflux, sliming constantly with every meal, the chest pressure with eating anything, the nightly gas pains under my collar bones, vomiting, and belly pain. All this while eating way smaller portions than most, just to almost be back to my pre-lap band weight, plus all the problems I didn’t have before the lapband. I feel like I’m a Prius in the metabolism race. I apparently hold onto every single calorie I ingest, so malabsorption as a tool might be a more effective option for me. And removing the ban will take care of the issues. 2. My surgeon prefers band to bypass when there is a history of GERD. From my understanding gerd after sleeve is quite common. Enough so that one of the local research hospitals is currently doing clinical trials for a procedure to treat reflux specifically for post sleeve patients. I’m already experiencing a life of reflux and anything I can do to make that better instead of potentially worse is where I’m looking. I really don’t want the acute gastritis and spasms again! Nothing like heart attack like symptoms to get you started:( My revision was requested as general surgery instead of bariatric, due to all of the complications, and approved 2 weeks after being submitted. I will be having my revision in one surgery. I specifically requested that from my surgeon. He is comfortable with and has experience doing it all at once, so that is my plan. I’m very adverse to two rounds under anesthesia and post op recoveries. One of the folks who post on the forums has a favorite saying: YMMV. Your Milage May Vary. Basically, your journey is your journey. Whatever decision you and your surgeon make whether bypass or sleeve is the right one for you. You have to feel confident and empowered in the decision process. It’s your health! Educate yourself, don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself and make the best choice for YOU. Good vibes to us all!

Where can I go for WLS in Oregon
blackcatsandbaddecisions replied to E-mom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So it’s outside of PDX but Dr. Tersigni with Bay Bariatrics in coos bay has a very affordable self pay option. He’s been doing these surgeries for a long time. I saw him, and I personally know 3 other people who got surgery from him as well. I traveled from outside the area to see him- rented a house from vacasa and stayed there for 5 days. I wouldn’t change a thing. -
I am about 1 1/2 years post op and I have an issue. I lost 100 pounds, going from 305 to 205 in 7 months and then..... I started coffee again. Sugar sugar sugar. That crack like creamer, International Delight. I totally regret it because since that 100 pound loss, I've been going between 205 and 212, with no more weight loss and I have about 4 cups of coffee a day. Doing the math, that's 560 calories, 80g sugar, 80g cards a day. I have a problem and I am only just now realizing the extent of it. I'm at the point where I want to stop cold turkey today. The reason I drink so much coffee is due to self medicating for my ADHD. I didn't realize that's what I was doing until recently. I started real medication for my ADHD and it helps with it a lot, but I'm still addicted to caffeine as a byproduct. Additionally let me say this right now because I wish someone told me when I was first post-op: Sweetened coffee creamer, whether artificial or real, will increase your desire for sweets and risk your post-op health. Sorry for the scary text formatting, but this is important and I feel it needs to be said. --------------- Moving on, I now need to find a way to navigate this addiction and remove it from my life. Do any of you have experience with quitting coffee, especially cold turkey? I tell myself I like coffee not for the caffeine, but for the ritual and because warm beverages are comforting to my anxiety riddled brain. Coffee is my safe place, but I need to find a healthier replacement. What are some good bariatric friendly, creamy, hot beverages?

I went through this also. It is very normal and you are not alone. You are proabably just soooo over the foods you have been eating which is where I was at. I called my bariatric nurse and asked her if I could try some other foods and she gave me some suggestions which helped. I think once you have more options and maybe get to eat something you actually enjoy you will have more self control. Try calling your surgeon or your nutritionist and ask them if you can try a few new foods. My nurse just told me the stages are just a guideline to go by but everyone is different and some peoples pouches can handle more than others and to try somthing but chew chew chew and see how your stomach reacts. Hope this helps. Def listen to your surgeon though. They are all different. Good luck girl.

Dozy: You didn't deserve to have this happen. My heart go's out to you and your family. And for a speedy recovery. We will listen if you have more to share. Renewed hope: Congrats on the "twins". God has blessed you. PM me for tips on raising 2 babies -- hugs. Snappy: I wasn't on the computer for a few days. Glad you did so well on surgery, proud of you. Your kids & mine are very close, how cool. Sorry everyone on not logging on. I've been stuggling with single-parenthood and an exhusband who is denying support for the boys. My challenge of late has been paying bills and asking for donated food to make ends meet. Also, my youngest needed his flu shot for his heart condition and we waited all morning and my baby just melted down when the moment arrived :sick I spent the rest of the day easing his broken heart and mine as well. On Saturday my rent was raised $75. and it has taken a few days to rally this newest situation. God is in the plan.... always. Anywhoo, I wanted to tell you all my trip to meet Kaliah Ali and the Moment of Truth tour was WONDERFUL. Those attending the seminar received a free book and autograph and I got to speak just a few words to this gal who lost over 100lbs with the same surgery that I had. I think I'm gonna make it and it was the boost that I needed. I am almost finished reading Kaliah's book and I do recommend it. She honestly tells about growing up without her dad and being a single parent also. I could relate to being the fat kid in class and thanked her for sharing. So, go get the book and give it to yourself for Christmas! Hugs, gotta go pick up kids -- bye!

Praise the Lord for all he has done! I was just banded on January 7th and I am really happy about my decision. I prayed the Lord night and day for a safe surgery and renewed health. I am also happy to see this board. I have a confession to make, one that I have never told anyone and recently admitted to myself but I have been a glutton for most of my life. The Bible ascribes a great deal of destructive power to gluttony. When we use food or drink in a way that injures our health or impairs our mind, we are guilty of the sin of gluttony. King Solomon, a man familiar with feasting and abundance, advises, "Blessed are you, O land, when your king is the son of nobles, and your princes feast at the proper time—for strength and not for drunkenness!" I realized that this was having a serious effect on my relationship with God. I was searching to be closer to Him but my gluttonous eating habits were preventing me. I thank the Lord for allowing me to see my problem and for providing me with forgiveness. Thank you for letting me share this and I am really happy to be getting closer to him. Thanks for listening!

What's your experience been with alcohol after surgery?
Valentina replied to LisaAdams50's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved in June and waited until Christmas the same year. I had brandy in a vanilla Protein shake. It was like a Brandy Alexander---bariatric style! Now, when I want a social drink, I am back to my beloved dirty martinis with three olives. Olives have some nutritional value, right??? That's my theory and I'm sticking to it. If you really want the RIGHT answer for YOU----ask your surgeon. Sit down with him/her and have a serious conversation about when/if it will be OK for YOU to have alcohol. Remember, some of the answers you might get on an internet site are just "smoke and mirrors"----not real.--just posted for "shock value". Be forewarned, Friend. Want the right answer to any serious question? ASK YOUR TEAM. -
Hi there! My name is Tonya and I live in Asheville. It seems that most of the people on this board are in Charlotte. Are the any WNC people out there? Would like to find some to talk to! A little about me: I am not banded yet. I went to the info session at Mission Bariatric here in Asheville a little over a year ago. They have an arbitrary maximum weight that have to be under in order for them to do the surgery. I have tried and tried to get there, but with no support I just can't get there. :cry I am currently looking at other options. I have BCBS and have looked at the "Surgical Centers of Excellence". The closest one to me that does the lap band seems to be Concord or Charlotte, both of which are at least 2 hours away, and even with that I'm not sure if they'll pay for the lap band. Anyway, I'm glad I found this board! Talking to other people in NC who are banded is great! Tonya Asheville, NC

What was your "That's it" Moment?
Drasan replied to TracyNYC's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had several mini moments before "That Moment" happened. - seeing the doctor write obese on my medical records then eventually writing morbidly obese - my health started to decline at a rapid rate and having to purchase a daily pill box to keep track of my meds - seeing pictures of myself - unable to walk without panting - looking at all the cute clothes in the store, then going to the plus size to buy. Why do plus sizes always look like clown clothes? - losing weight, a lot of weight, only to gain it back and then some Then "That Moment" happened. I had a first consult with my bariatric surgeon. He calculated the number of years I have left to live if I continued to be morbidly obese. My life expectancy would be cut in half!!! That is when I chose to live. -
How will this be different?

We are so lucky here in North Texas to have so many top bariatric surgeons. I was very happy with my surgeon and experience as well. -
I'm from the South Bend area and am going to Memorial Weight Loss and Bariatrics (I HIGHLY recommend them - they focus on making over your mind as well, and really teach you everything you need to succeed; there's a NUT, a counselor, and an insurance pro in addition to the surgeon). My surgery is March 13! It took 8 months to get a date after all the insurance and testing but I'm so happy it's finally close!

I had a wonderful experience!! Everyone at the bariatric center is great, I felt very prepared going into surgery. My hospital stays was good too. I was only there one night. My surgery took 45 min and then I was in my room. They make you get up every 2 hours to walk the unit . I plan on losing 100, the doc says I can loose a little more. My hair is falling out, not bad but I notice it more than anyone else. I take biotin and it seems to help.

Undecided lap band vs sleeve
Bandista replied to Laurensloss's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Best wishes with whatever you decide. The great thing is you are choosing yourself and your health -- turning your life around. These posts, however, are what make me wish Bariatric Pal had not merged all the weight loss surgeries into one site. It's disheartening -- like arguing over politics. We were so happy with our bands and now I feel like have to defend myself. Statistics are interesting, the way they can be interpreted. I think we are lucky to have choices -- I'm sure you will make a good choice for yourself, just like I did. -
Undecided lap band vs sleeve
Bandarella replied to Laurensloss's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Medicare requires you to use a Center of Excellence for surgeries. I would call every hospital in your area and speak to the insurance coordinator for the bariatric department to determine a) if they contract with Medicare and if they are a COE. This is what I had to do prior to my Lapband implantation. -
I'm June 27. Mini Bypass with Bariatric Pal Mexico.

Bariatric surgery was a big mistake
JessLess replied to Alvinchicago's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Depression, and I believe regret could come from a similar place, is incredibly common after WLS. I hope anyone feeling down considers seeing a therapist and/or psychiatrist with experience with bariatric patients. Feel better and be well. -

MrsGamgee replied to Alvinchicago's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm sorry you're struggling, and that your surgeon's team didn't prepare you better for what to expect post op. I respectfully suggest that you find yourself a therapist with experience in dealing with bariatric patients and/or eating disorders. Your surgeon's office should be able to make some recommendations. I'm assuming that you're in your first couple of months post op, when things are toughest. This is a season of your life, and I strongly urge you to find the emotional tools to help you. As has been mentioned above, you need to find ways to be social that don't involve food. It is a great lesson for your kids to learn too, to set them up with a healthy relationship with food for down the road. I wish you good luck and hope you find a way through the next few months. -

Once I discovered chewables, I starting enjoying the vitamins as well. I completely agree that they feel a bit like dessert after eating, so I space them out the way you do. I'm particularly fond of the Bariatric Advantage caramel chewy bites. -
Bariatric surgery was a big mistake
JanJan19 replied to Alvinchicago's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
If you were trying to warn people off bariatric surgery with this post I think you've done the opposite. For starters, I'm not even sure you're real. Second, if you got a major surgery such as this without doing any research... that's on you. Six food trucks and there was NOTHING you could eat? You sound like you're purposely being difficult because you're so angry. There were no hot dogs? Pull it off the bun and eat half. No big deal. A taco truck? Eat the meat & cheese, skip the shell. You are being purposely difficult in some attempt to punish everyone for your anger. Mother's Day - you couldn't go out for breakfast? Why on earth not? Assuming you were 4 weeks post op by then you could have ordered scrambled eggs with cheese and a side of cottage cheese instead of hash browns. IF the point of the holiday was to spend it with loved ones, that's what you do. If you're so mortified by the waitress asking if you enjoyed your meal ask for a to-go box the moment they set it down and pack up what you won't eat. You look like a fool carrying a water bottle - are you serious with this? American's have a drink in hand ALL THE TIME. Soda, coffee cups, frap cups. People are constantly walking around with drinks. Im not sure if I hope you're real or not. If you're not real, you are a real sad individual to come on here and troll people trying to improve their lives. Get a new hobby. If you are real... please get help. For the sake of your family, please.
