Finally banded!!

<p>I just got banded the 25th of this month. so needless to say I am still a bit sore. The liquid diet isn't as hard as I thought it might be, the hardest part is that I can't lift anything over 10 lbs and I have a 21 month old son. He likes to be independent most of the time, walking to the car, climbing into his carseat, but when he doesn't feel like asserting his independence, it's kinda hard to force that, but I have to since I can't lift him. But I guess this 6 weeks will pass quickly and in the end it will all be worth it. Oh well, nap time for the kiddos (and me):notagree. So Now that I am actually banded, I will be on here more often I assume, now that I really have something to talk about. Before I either had questions or I was just reading about everyone else's experiences, now I have my own to talk about!! YAY!!:whoo:
3. I sometimes wonder the same thing but the reality is that I have lost 31 lbs and kept it off in the last few months. Sure I could have lost another 10 or on top of that but I'm not going to beat myself up about it. I made a decision when I had the op that I was going to lose my weight in the next 8 months or so... I still have around 5 months to go. I also made a decision that I wasn't going to stop living because I like socialising and having the odd cake, alcoholic drink etc. So if that means not losing my weight as fast as some then so be it but I know that I will lose. Normal living for all of my slim friends is exactly what we are doing... good 90% of the time and letting go 10% of the time. Makes sense to me. Anyway thanks for sharing and keep on doing what you are doing because you've certainly frog leaped over me by a mile.
4. Most doctors (at least here in Maryland) won't do a fill until at least 6 weeks post-op. You may feel all healed up, but might not be. Don't rush it. I got my first fill at 6 weeks, 3ccs, and by evening even water gave me indigestion. The next day I called and met the doctor at the hospital and he unfilled about 1.5 ccs. Two weeks later in his office I reported that soft foods were okay, but I was having trouble with denser stuff. So he took out another cc. On my last visit, I said I am able to eat way more than 1/2 cup of food and I get hungry before 4 hours, but he talked me out of the fill since I was still losing and he said I was ahead of schedule for the band, bypass, and sleeve. So I have at the most 1cc in my band (a 14cc fill volume), and I am working on my head hunger. I do eat more than 1/2 cup, but I love salads (I put chicken, ham or turkey on it for a protein source) and am still slowly losing. I plateaued for a month or so, and now it is creeping down. I was on liquids before surgery (lost 25 pounds) and I lost 10 during the 6 month diet. The rest has come off since surgery on 3/25/08.

Tomorrow is my big day!!!

Good Luck to all of you. I hope your surgeries went well. My surgery is 11/19 and I would love to her from all of you how things went. It is hard to wait. I am so happy to have all of youto help support me. I don't really have much support otherwise.
6. Hi, I have had what he Dr thinks is a surface infection of the port site for a week (banded 4th Feb 10). This is my second round of antiboitics and just not sure if its getting better. It is still hot and very red (about an inch all theway around the wound), and the port site is raised (like someone stuck an egg in there), but is not weaping. Has anyone had this issues? Is swelling of the port site area normal 2-3 weeks post surgury? HELP!!
7. I'm getting toward the end of my journey, and it's funny how things are so different from the inside looking out. I've realized through this journey that while each NSV and every mini goal met is significant and praise worthy, the most significant loss I had was the first 30-40 for me. It was when I hit the middle of those numbers that I realized that I WAS doing this! I AM going to succeed!! I CAN keep losing this weight!! It was the true marker for me and the green light to realize that my body was changing, I was shrinking and it was the first and probably the biggest boost to my confidence that I've had this entire journey. That being said, the first 30-40 lbs of my loss was probably the most insignificant to those around me and who saw me on a daily basis. It was enough for them to see that I'd lost 'some' weight, but let's face it when you're as big as we all are/were a 30-40 lb loss LOOKS like maybe 10-15 to the untrained eye. I don't even think my first 30 I went down a pant size yet! Hardly anyone noticed those first blocks of weight when they were shed, but I knew. I noticed, and I was proud!! Now, as I'm battling my last 40-30 pounds it seems really insignificant, I've already battled away over 100 lbs of loss, what is 30 or 40 more? It's nothing! BUT! To those that are outside looking in, I think this is the MOST significant 30-40 pounds. In my last 10 pounds of loss I've had more compliments, comments, people noticing how small I've gotten. They marvel and wonder aloud 'How much more are you going to lose?!'. It's funny how that flip is switched. For me to say 'Oh, just 30' now the looks are of shock and awe! When I lost my first 30, those who asked how much I had lost and I told 'Oh, just 30' very excited and bubbly, they'd respond with maybe a glance and an over the shoulder 'Oh, that's good...'. It's funny how people perceive those who are going through a change. Ultimately, I'm proud of every last pound, every last inch. This transformation has been amazing! I'm not the fastest loser, but I'm not giving up!! I'm going to do it! I'm going to reach my goal, and I know each and everyone of us can and will!!

Help Me Slow My Eating Down

I agree with Crystal... you'll slow down, lol. But in the meantime, the toothpic idea is a good one, or at least, cut up the tiny bites and only put one bite on the fork at a time. If it were me, I'd take baby steps. If you are wolfing down your food, time yourself between bites when eating NORMALLY, and then add 10 seconds in between each bite (yes, you'll have to count). Then when you get used to that add another 10 seconds. I have to do everything in baby steps or it's just all too big!
9. You two sound like this failed and you're only a Lil bit out after surgery. When was the last time a yogurt took u 10 min to eat? Never! Get up and out and excercise!!! This isn't a miracle it's a tool so use it right!

New to Diabetes and Lap Band

Good news EVERYONE, I am not banded yet but, hope to be soon. I have had diabetes for 19 years and am on 4 different meds for it. My last AIC was almost 12. I am praying this will help me get my AIC down.My Dr does not guarantee it though because I have been a diabetic so long. How long have you had diabetes, the ones that are off meds?Good Luck to everyone.

Anyone in Arkansas?

I had my surgery Dec 17th was self pay so it made sense for me to fly to Dallas for my surgery 12,200 all inclusive. Today I've lost 38 pounds since surgery had a text book recovery which I'm fortunate for!! I'm able to ear pretty much what ever I want now but only very very small amounts. I push myself to get 800 calories per day early on I was only getting 500-550 per day and my weight loss was slow, since I've upped my calories to 800 I've been averaging 3 pounds per week!! Best decision of my life just wish I would have done this 10 years ago!!

Infection prior to surgery?

Sorry about your UTI. I don’t know about others, but I had my sleeve on 10/10 and they did NOT give me an antibiotic after surgery. I think it’s odd they didn’t give you any to clear up the UTI before surgery. Did they say why they didn’t??

On my way

Hi everyone. Today is 1 week since surgery. I feel fine except I'm still sore & a bit black & blue near my port incision. Has anyone experienced that? I've lost 20 lbs. Lost 6 lbs since surgury, 20lbs so far including the liquids I was on 2 weeks prior to surgury. I get my 1st fill 3/10/05.
14. I am almost 10 months out (2/9/2012) and have lost 78 pounds. Which makes me happy and I feel great- better than I have in longer than I can remember. But, I have been stuck at that weight for about 5 weeks. I know that I am snacking more, and while I haven't gained anything- even over Thanksgiving, I haven't lost anything. I have absolutely GOT to get back on track. I had stopped coming to this site for a while, but I am going to start making regular visits again. So, please, if you read this post, reply and yell at me to get my act together again before all this hard work goes to waste (or waist). Thanks!!

Pre Op Diet Disaster

And I had lost 6 pounds already since Monday! Uugghh! 10 years of college to be so stupid! This is exactly why I need this surgery. I start, but there is nothing holding me to it so I mess up every time.
16. Ok...where to start lol...for all of you that have had this surgery I commend you. If I can get through this, hell I can get through anything. Hands down worst pain ever experienced would have a baby 10 times over lol... Suppose to have gastric bypass but I had to much scar tissue and they opted for the sleeve. Doc said internally they were hard on me as I had some muscles that did not cooperate and he had to beat me up inside more then normal. Loved my doctor, super great bedside manor. Im highly emotional have had to lil break downs. Im guessing lack of sleep, no food, so much pain and damn uncomfortable. This too shall pass just cry it out, you will feel better. This is a long rd a head and i know i will have doubts and freak outs but come with the territory. If this pain subsides i will manage. Stay strong, stay focused we sid this for a reason and knowone said it would be easy. Believe in yourself, you got this!!! Thank god for forums and ppl sharing, would not have done it with out all the info xo

Less than a week to go.

Hi Lucky, I think the doubt is part and parcel of the whole thing. I know the sleeve will end up being one of the best decisions I have made but when your in pain and feeling crap it does creep into it. I think I was unprepared for how much pain I would actually be in. My surgeon has said that due to my allergies he couldnt pump me full of the usual pain killers during the operation so from the minute I came round I was in real pain, if I was still I was saying my pain was a 3 on a scale from 0-10 (10 being the worse ever) but the minute I moved I soon changed that to a 8-9, I actually thought they had left something inside me at one stage because it felt like something was ripping and tearing inside me. Previous surgery I have always sailed through and never complained about pain and I assumed that this would be the same.......I think that was where part of my doubting came from. I am still suffering from reflux which is annoying the living daylights out of me but I feel so much better today and for the first time since getting home from hospital I actually want to go out. My first week was rotten there is no denying that but I know its a small blip on what will be a long road ahead of me and thing are going to continue to improve. I really hope you get your date really soon Lucky and that you dont have as rough a first week as I have had. Oh and one last thing, I am absolutely gutted about...............I used to love my cup of tea first thing in the morning, now I can't stand the taste of tea, it tastes vile. I really hope that changes as I dont like coffee and never have, I hate even the smell of that stuff lol.

Quest bars

Ok, I gave in and tried the chocolate chip cookie dough. The taste is great but they are HARD!! However, the kid working said he eats the same ones and suggested throwing them in the microwave for about 10 seconds so I did.....WOW!! I'm hooked!! But as for taking to work where I have no microwave....No, I don't want to chip a tooth.

Slow Weight Loss

I'm 6ish weeks out and I'm falling in the 650-800 calorie a day range now. I started slowly adding 1/2 banana once per day into my shake a couple of weeks ago. Then I stalled for a week elliminated the 1/2 banana...boom started dropping again. I'm not exercising like crazy but getting 10-14k steps in a day. I have not so much had a piece of popcorn. I figure I'm one of those people with a carb sensitive body.

Appointment with Dietician Scared Me

That's such rot, honestly. My life as a bandster is nothign like that and she sounds like she really has no idea. For starters, a meal the size of a tennis ball will satisfy you, so its all you'll WANT to eat. You wont feel deprived at all. I eat 3 meals a day just fine. I dont think that much about what I eat. I eat a normal diet in good amounts, I choose healthy foods and that's pretty much all there is to it. I drink when I'm thirsty, there's no need to obsess over and measure out Water. Just drink some, preferably 8 glasses a day or so. But it takes what, 10 seconds to drink a glass of water. I spend way LESS time thinking about food and eating it than I did. Its like being set free, not an endless prison of rules, regulations and regimes. I'd ditch her and find a nutritionist that actually knows what its like to live life banded.
22. Well, I wanted the surgery this past summer (I'm a teacher) but my insurance wasn't going to come through in time...so we scheduled it for December 19 (Merry Christmas, right???). Since the summer I've been almost talking myself out of this whole thing. I got insurance approval in the mail today! Has anyone else gone back and forth with this? One day I feel like I want it and then the next I'm sure I can handle this 'disease' on my own. Please tell me others are as wishy-washy as I am!!! And how do I come to a final decision???

My inner thoughts, I don't share.

Being large sure has hampered my life some the past few years. I have not talked about it to anyone, but now I can relate and will share my thoughts. I was in the military and my last few years was trying as I had a vigorous exercise routine but was gaining weight. I was riding a bike for three hours a time, three times a week cross country. Anyway I finally retired and for the next few years I just laid back and relaxed and put on the #s. It took me 10 years to decide to change my life at 270 #s. The feelings I felt was loss of self esteem, did not want to go anywhere, had difficulty tying my shoes, and having to buy expensive tailored clothes. I rode a viking boat one year and when the bar was pulled close to my body, I could not breath, my circulation was cut off. After that I did not ride it again. As far as the airplane seats, I took a connecting flight once and had problems hooking the belt, yes I admit it. Now with my lapband in place i feel more confident, more energy, high self esteem, and feel great about dressing in nice fit clothing. Being a lapbander is FANTASTIC and I know the results will be achiebved. You will look great too, so just hang in there. I wish you much success.
24. For the last 10 years, I've been on the hot side, daring my husband to turn on the furnace in the winter and freezing out my secretary at work. Since VSG, my how the table has turned! Here in the tropics with the air turned to "meat locker," I actually have to keep a sweater on the back of my chair at work and wrap up in it when I start to shiver. Paybacks HAVE been hell. Am I the only one?
