I was told to wait primarily because during the weight loss phase your liver is having to work like crazy to get rid of the toxins that your fat cells are releasing, and if you add alcohol to that could be very damaging.. and of course also the increased risk of alcoholism. Glad I wasn’t much of a drinker before (like.. 10 drinks a year maybe?) because dealing with food habits and changing those for the better is already a LOT! So much respect for all of you who are dealing with missing alcohol on top of everything else 🌸

Any October 2021 Surgeries?
red_hatorade replied to devotion's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was sleeved on October 13! I am 36/F living in Ohio. I have 2 kids, a soon to be 11 year old girl and a 4 year old boy. My high weight was when I was pregnant with my son, over 300 lbs. Starting weight was 288, got down to 271 before 2 week liquid diet, then got down to 253 day of surgery. I am almost 2 weeks post op and am down to 238. -
I'm going in today to a new doctor -- haven't had any follow up in 10 years, have gained 50 pounds back (about 10 pounds a year) after losing 150. Have been having some issues on and off that include a tremendous amount of mucus, throwing up, and difficulty eating when sitting down. A Lot of changes in my life these past 5 years and emotionally haven't been handling them well -- feel like issue is more emotional than physical, but figured I'd start with something tangible that i can see -- have the band looked at and adjusted if needed. Any advice and thoughts would be welcome.... TIA

I agree 100%. I under went VSG in 2015 at the recommendation of my surgeon. I was initially looking into getting RNY but he stated since I was young and without children, it would be best to undergo the sleeve procedure. However, I'm 7 years post op, experience severe GERD, regained a good portion of my weight loss (my fault completely) and am now in the self pay bucket for revision as my current insurance under my employer outright refused any type of bariatric surgery. I'm not saying all this to scare anyone, I'm just saying DO WHAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU. I wish I would have put my foot down on the decision between VSG vs RNY but all and all, I did it and it is what it is. It works for some, but not for all. Unfortunately I fell into the "not for all" and it was definitely USER error. I can't speak on it, but I feel I would have had a better success rate with RNY vs VSG which is why I'm looking into the self pay option for the revision surgery. I would say to anyone looking into bariatric surgery to RESEARCH and ask a lot of questions at appointments/support groups. In the end like I said, do what is best for you. 😁

CPAP on Surgery Day
ColieCallwell replied to Pete-TheTimeIsNow's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I took my cpap with me to the hospital, but never used it. I quit using my cpap about a month after surgery. I wore it because I snored so badly, but after I lost weight, I quit snoring. If I try to wear it now, it feels like the pressure is too high. Sent from my SM-N976V using BariatricPal mobile app -
Hi I'm Sam, currently 7 seven years out of VSG and looking into revision due to weight gain.
I'll be the first to say I lived life a little too hard and am looking for a second chance at a healthier life.

What do you consider "Starting Weight"?

I use the weight I was on my first surgeon visit as my starting weight but my actual highest recorded weight was 13 lbs higher a couple of years earlier. -
Bariatric surgery and keto?
Arabesque replied to deardarkling's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Always a good idea to get feedback from others. I was put on keto for the 2.5 weeks before surgery but that was all I did. Some will likely swear by it but personally I wouldn’t go back to it. Good to kick start a diet but not long term. Your surgery is the best kickstart you’ll ever find. The high fat intake on keto is the real issue for me. I’ve never enjoyed high fat foods & now I don’t have a gall bladder to help process all that fat. You may find your cholesterol temporarily increases while you are losing (it’s released from your fat). I believe it’s one of the reasons most surgeons & dieticians recommend low fat while you’re losing so you’re not adding to the risk. Losing large amounts of weight & high cholesterol levels also put you had a higher risk of developing gall stones. It’s why many of us end up having issues & have our galls removed post weight loss surgery. I’ve read keto can also screw with your blood sugar levels so if you have issues with diabetes it may not be your best option. Usually best to stick to your surgeon’s plan & dietician’s recommendations while you are losing. Slowing adding in new foods as you go. You’ll lose doing that & you will go into ketosis as well - bad breath & a smelly body awaits you 😉. You may find you end up developing your own eating plan which works for you & which incorporates aspects of many eating styles once you’re close to or in maintenance: keto, vegan, vegetarian, Atkins, intermittent fasting, etc. Whatever way you go it has to be sustainable & complement how to want to live your life. Good luck whatever you choose to do. -
What do you consider "Starting Weight"?
Elidh replied to Pete-TheTimeIsNow's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use my weight at the start of the 2-week pre-op diet. That was my highest weight ever and an even 200.0 lbs. Makes the calculations easy! 😉 -
What do you consider "Starting Weight"?
Arabesque replied to Pete-TheTimeIsNow's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use both. My weight at my GP when I asked for my referral to the surgeon (91kg) cause it was my weight when I officially started the process. I sometimes refer to my weight on the day of surgery (85.8kg 6 weeks later) because that was what I was right before I started benefitting from the surgery. -
They are almost impossible to pass usually because of their size. Certain medications can help dissolve very small gravel but the side effects aren’t the nicest & until they are gone you will continue to experience pain. Have you had an abdominal ultrasound to see how many you have & how large they are? Best treatment is to have your gall bladder removed otherwise you will continue to experience pain. My surgeon said once you have one stone you will likely develop more. Gall stones can develop because of high cholesterol, prolonged weight loss, menopause or high bilirubin levels.

Hey there! I was wondering if I could get some feedback from individuals who have combined bariatric surgery with the ketogenic diet, and what your progress has been with it. Specifically wondering if you've seen it maximize your weight loss.

I use my highest weight recorded for starting weight, then surgery weight for what I weighed at the hospital before surgery. Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app -
I track weight loss in baritastic & also in my own spreadsheet.

I use my weight the day I called for the referral to be put through. However, my total weight loss from my heaviest is what's on my ticker, because it's more motivating that way and durn it, I did the work! -
How long for hospital weight to drop off?
vikingbeast replied to greenchilegoddess's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor (my primary) told me to take my blood pressure/water pill combo the day after surgery and I peed like a freaking racehorse. I was under surgery weight by day 3. Now, six weeks out, I'm done with the first stall (it was more like a slowdown) and am losing relatively steadily at around 3 lbs/week, which is elating. -

samjourney replied to Pete-TheTimeIsNow's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For me, I use my highest weight of all time. Any weight loss progress is progress! I didn't start the bariatric surgery process until April of 2021 when I was 318lbs. However, my highest weight was in January of 2020 when I was a little over 330lbs so that is what I consider my "starting weight". Good luck to you ❤️ -
I fired my clinic's nutritionist today
vikingbeast replied to vikingbeast's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh, I bet they're similar to the words I wanted to say. (I only used the f-bomb once, and as a proud son of New Jersey, that counts as INCREDIBLE restraint, we toss that particular four-letter word around like it's a comma.) I went to see a different doctor for a workup today, a cardiologist, and he congratulated me on the weight loss and said it shows in my heart health. So NYAAAAAAH to the now-fired NUT. -
Help. What have you done to break stalls early in and slow losing
Iluvbats replied to ctsaunde2's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I'm 4 months post-op sleeve and I have had several stalls. One thing that helps me is not seeing the scale go UP! I stay at the same weight for a couple of weeks and then I might lose a pound. I totally celebrate that pound and I say, even out loud: "I'll take it!" Reason: I got to this point in my life because I did stupid fad diets and wrecked my metabolism and my body. This is my last chance to get this right. I figure it will take me a year to get to 50 lb weight lost and then another 6 months to a year to get to my goal. But, I WILL GET THERE in the end! I'm prepared to do another diet (and this time have it documented the way insurance requires) as it seems like my doctor didn't document everything the way insurance wants it. It's a huge disappointment because now instead of the surgery being literally free (I've hit my out of pocket this year), I'll have to pay $5,000 since this pushes it out to next year. My diet from this doctor has been working well. I've lost another 5 lbs, and am down a total of 40lbs. It's really too bad that we didn't realize what needed to be written down in the office notes so that the diet would count.😫 I wonder if insurance will get upset if I am successful with this second diet? I hope they go off my starting weight and not whatever I weigh immediately before surgery.

How long for hospital weight to drop off?
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to greenchilegoddess's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I opted not to weight for a full week post-op. Surgery was on a Tuesday, I stepped on the scale for the first time the following Tuesday. Everyone will shake off the IV fluids at their own pace, so no point weighing sooner than is realistic. Staying on top of your fluids, walking as much as you can, and getting adequate sleep will all help healing tremendously. Congrats! You're going to do great! -
When was your surgery? Are you on Actigall/Ursodiol? Gall bladder problems are quite common for WLS patients in the active weight loss phase, especially if you had a history prior to surgery. Definitely contact your surgeon and get seen! If the pain can't be managed, go to the ER.

What do you consider "Starting Weight"?
lizonaplane replied to Pete-TheTimeIsNow's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I start from the day I called the surgery center. I had a higher weight years earlier, then lost 100lbs through tracking calories, but then gained MOST but not all of it back, the last 30 lbs of that during COVID. I lost 50 lbs during preparations for surgery, but only 2 lbs of that was on the "pre-op diet".
