  1. I know there are (or can be) immediate post-op problems with gas/bloating, but in the long run, does VSG help with bloating/IBS issues? I've had a sensitive stomach for years and even now, being on a raw veggie, protein drink & water diet for the last two weeks, I'm super bloated, gassy, and have pretty bad GI issues. Ugh... Wondering if this surgery is going to finally help resolve some of these things.
  2. This is all new, but I was wondering what is the point of the 2 week pre-op diet? Is it to lose some weight before the surgery? Or to clean out your stomach?
  3. First off sleeved June 15, 2015 Starting weight:265 Surgery weight:240 Today's weight:191 I had just a few problems after surgery with getting sick. Recovery was good and I was on smashed foods when I was released from the hospital. I was eating a spoonful of refried Beans with cheese and sour cream for about a week and half then added other foods as tolerated. I had trouble finding a Protein shake I liked after surgery and have finally found one that I can handled. I take my Vitamins and stool softener at night. I forget my Calcium all the time:( I just had my blood draw and everything came back in the normal range. When I was about 6 weeks out I hit a stall.....I stayed the same weight for about 3 weeks. I got very frustrated and I changed everything up. I added 10 mins to the treadmill(45 mins total), stationary bike for 20 mins and then started some leg exercises as my tummy was still a little sore. I upped my calories a little and would do treadmill and bike everyday, legs every other day. Then I would drink my Protein Shake right after I worked out. I would eat about an hour before I worked out. I changed what I was eating to only protein and did this for about a week. It helped a little. I have hit several stalls since then and tried all these things since and they haven't helped. I go a week or some and not lose then lose a few pounds. I might gain and then lose, I have been hovering at 191.5-189 for three weeks now and I can not seem to break this. I think that if you keep doing what your suppose to do your body will eventually realize and the scales will move again. My best advise is clean out the pantry and fridge. Get rid of any and all temptations and find a Protein Bar and Protein Drink to use after workouts/when your starving and that will help with the cravings your having if you are. Good luck and enjoy the ride. Sometimes the stalls help you realize where you have come from, and let's your mind caught up with your body changes!!
  4. Stalls happen. I had one only a week out from surgery that lasted 4 weeks. I can tell you I was doing everything I was supposed to do. Then after four weeks the scale started to move and I have lost 10 lbs in about 2 weeks. I think sometimes our bodies just need to catch up with itself. Those four weeks I didn't lose any weight but I lost a lot of inches. Hang in there! If you are doing everything you are supposed to the weight will come off! Try staying off the scale for awhile so you don't get overly frustrated. Take care!
  5. I was looking at my chart today. It's been 16 weeks and 20 lbs since I stepped into Onederland. Now at 179 lbs I remember how it did feel. For me it was great. But, remember that there may be more going on that is affecting how you are feeling. Afterall, I'm assuming you are a woman? We do have our yucky moments now don't we??? Give youself a few days for it to sink in. BTW. Don't expect your body to look different to you. I was talking to someone yesterday about that. When I look in the mirror what I see is pretty much the same thing I saw 86 lbs ago. I still have the same rolls, the same "issues" I had but they are just smaller and fit in different clothes. Try to look for the little changes like being able to feel a bone you forgot was there. Does your chair seem more roomy now? Do you use as much of the seatbelt as you used to? What are others saying to you? Surely they are noticing. I think they see more clearly than we do sometimes. Listen to them. At church yesterday I got so many comments on how wonderful I looked. I had seen these same people last week. They didn't gush over me then. What was the difference? I had got a hair cut is all I can think of. It really is the little things. Things that we can't really even see.

    Weird thing...

Ha! Yes! My 4 year old told me last week that she doesnt like my bones! She misses the warm squishy mommy. My butt is the worst tho..its all tailbone now. The knees took a bit to get used too, but now its the waist and hips i feel the most. Shoulders tol..never thought i would see skinny shoulders or clavicles!
  7. I had mysurgury consult yesterday. I was told atkins diet 2 weeks or longer before the vsg. I am curious of other input on what their doctor recommended and possibly why? My doctor said the atkins with no carbs and sugar will reduce the size for the operation. I would think maybe atkins and then maybe two days before the operation switch to liquid so the system is cleaned out of all food. Curious to hear replies. I'm in greenville NCand the doctor is Dr. Nazeri of Sothern Surgical.

    Caffeine?

Hi Fluffy RN, My doc said coffee and tea were fine. I have PCOS and I was banded 7/3/09 by Dr. Ortiz in MX. I stopped caffeine about 4 weeks pre-op because when I have caffeine it drops my blood sugar in a hurry. Then I get into that starvation mode and have to eat QUICKLY. I knew that this would not work with having to lose weight pre-operatively or post-operatively. I actually feel much better being off the caff. I do still have my coffee and tea but their decaf. Hope this helps! Tish

    Caffeine?

Fluffy, I've had teas and coffees since one week post-surgery. My doc says okey doke. No problem. I think that people who do have up/down sugars may have trouble with it. But if it doesn't seem to spike/crash your cravings or blood sugar levels then I would think you are fine. Remember, everything in moderation...so your one cup in the morning seems fine. I am four weeks post op now, having half or one cup of coffee in the morning and lots of iced tea in the afternoon because there hasn't been one day this summer (in Texas) below 100 degrees Farenheit. :-)

    Caffine

I'm another one whose doctor had no restriction on caffeine...I live on iced tea, Starbucks, etc. and have since my surgery. I'm NOT allowed to drink carbonation (it inflates the pouch)...and faced the consequence of acid reflux in a band that was too tight last week when I ordered and drank a large Diet Coke from Burger King. Carbonation doesn't seem to be an issue in looser bands, but WATCH OUT when your band is tight! That acid reflux is murder...

    Caffine

At my two week post op visit my surgeon said I could have Reg Coffee. I would be careful not to use a straw for ice coffee.

    Stalling

I'm 4 weeks post op and I was told that on the 3rd week, it's normal to have a stall. Has anyone had a stall longer then that??? I feel like a failure. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    camping food ideas????

I go camping very often and we tend to stick to lean meats, veggies and fruits. I put everything in foil packets with seasoning, marinade or other flavors and then cook over grill or camp fire. Works well. Last week we made fish with zucchini and mushrooms one day and grilled chicken with corn on cobb and grilled pineapple another day. Hope this helps.
  16. Sal- I STRONGLY recommend that you stick to full liquids for as long as your doctor tells you to. It's not about what will-or-won't go down... it's about letting your stomach heal. It can't heal if it has to work. It's swollen and needs to rest. I also couldn't wait to get through with the liquid stage-- a warm scrambled egg never tasted so good. But I still can't have any real solids-- I have to blend everything up to the consistency of apple sauce for the next two weeks. Then real solids. If you move forward too fast, you may cause a problem. My doctor's office said that it is only liquid if you can drink it through a straw-- tuna fish, mashed potatoes don't count there. (In my 2nd stage, I still have to blend up my tuna fish.) I know it sucks-- I did get some chewing gum in my second week. It may cause some gas, but it wasn't a problem for me (I was just a little burpy-- very ladylike! :wink2: I'm sure you can suck it up for a little while! (not trying to be mean, or anything... just heal well.) Edited to add: I would call your doctor's office and ask exactly how long they want you to stay on liquids. Maybe they only want 1 week and you could move on to mushies/blended foods. (You can blend any solids-- I had blended turkey meatloaf for dinner.)
  17. There are lots of different sets of guidance that I've seen post-op, so it seems that each surgeon is different. For me, I was restricted to Clear Liquids only for 7 days post, then full liquids for 3...tomorrow, I start my second of two weeks on purees...on the 22nd, I'll start softs, moving into more solid food...my first adjustment is scheduled for the 31st. I had been told during my preop studies that, for my surgeon, from clear liquids to solids takes about 6 weeks total. That seems like a long time, but I know that the progression is moved slowly so that all of the healing can take place appropriately. For me, having had a hiatal hernia repaired at the same time, I'm glad for the extra "rest" in that area. Keep in mind that, when you start having fills, you will be advised to regress in your food types for a few days after each one...you need to be prepared for that. Advancing your diet too far, too fast at any stage is just setting yourself up for problems. The advice my nutritionist told me is "Just because you THINK you can eat it, doesn't mean you SHOULD!". I think those are pretty good words to the wise. Hang in there! V/R, Christine
  18. I would try using dailyplate.com (or some other online journal) for a couple of weeks to track your food. It sounds like a lot of work but it really isnt and is it so worth it. A lot of times what we think is "enough" or the "right choice" - isnt. And if you dont - how can you correct?
  19. I was banded on the same day as u and I've lost 19 since surg and 25 total! I think you are doing awsome, i wish I were 10 more lbs along! lol increase your calories, that helped me when I was at a stall! congrats on your awsome progress and keep up the good work! amy
  20. My doctor is Wagner. I haven't even been to see him for my post surgery exam yet, much less a fill. He is out of town for 2 weeks so I won't see him until the second week of August. He said he would put the first fill in in 5 weeks. If you have hit a plateau, maybe mix up your excercise routine, or even your eating habits a bit. This seems to jump start the metabolism during regular dieting. Either way, I am sure it is normal and just a natural part of the body losing weight. Sounds like you are doing great other than that, so I wouldn't worry too much about this. My problem is I had the surgery 4 days ago and can't stay off the scale. Talk about torture!! I need to hide that thing for weeks at a time!!!
  21. So, 19 months post op, after an 85 lb loss and very successful surgery (I have been at goal weight for 9 months), I decided to have a breast lift in both and reduction in one. That happened a week ago and all is well! I posted my story on my blog, so take a look. Most of you know I did a weekly blog for the first year of life after the sleeve and posted faithfully every Sunday. I stopped after a little over a year, but thought this was worthy to share. I thought I would need implants but after some research, found out that a lift and reduction would be best and I am so happy not to have implants! I am almost 60 but for the first time in my life I now have nice breasts! My blog is www.queenofcrop.com I have more details of what happened there and yes, there are photos (that I couldn't post here). Haven't been on the forum for a while so I'm sure there are lots of new people here....hope everyone is having a very successful time of it. The forum was so helpful for me in my first year!
  22. I am 3 months 2 weeks. I eat 800 calories a day. 70 grams protein, 60 gram carbs, 80-100 oz of water. I have lost 63 pounds. I can eat almost anything. My sleeve doesn't like milk, ice cream, chocolate. I enjoy food with a lot of flavor now. Spices are my best friend.
  23. Hey!!! I'm 3 months and 2 weeks... I feel great.. but I'm dealing w/ feeling okay about eating!!! I obsess over the number of calories I'm consuming... and I went through a sweets phase last month while I was celebrating my birthday.. Back on track now, exercising and severely limiting my sugar intake.. As far as hunger, I only experience it when I'm not drinking enough Water.. when my fluids are on track, I have to schedule my meals.. No water means I'm eating ALL day!!!
  24. I was sleeved on Jan. 5th. I still experience an extreme "full feeling" - especially after I eat proteins like chicken, eggs or jerkey. Embrace it! I have become methodical with my eating habits. I find myself eating the same foods almost daily. Kashi Go Lean, egg whites w/ ff cheddar cheese and dill, chobani w/ Kashi, JERKY, Dal, and chicken tenderloins. I still don't feel "hunger" - per se. I feel empty - and that is typically my signal to drink more water. I have found it quite easy to get in the recommended proteins and water daily. Until recently, I was having a difficult time getting in enough calories - because I was always so full. I am doing better now, and take in about 600-700 daily. I found that the easiest way to increase calories was to add nuts or an additional protein shake in the PM. (The problem with nuts is that I can eat them like there's no tomorrow! I definitely have to monitor my intake with them!). I'm on my 2nd stall. The first one lasted a little over 2 weeks - and now this one has lasted about 2. Frustrating, yes.... This too, shall pass, though. I am down 38 since being sleeved, 74 since I began this journey in October. I feel better than I have in years! I am soooo glad that I decided to do this. It is definitely a wonderful tool. This is probably more info than you were looking for. I kinda get to rambling. Sorry! Best of luck to you!
  25. Howdy-- I've been working on getting insurance approval for over a year and finally succeeded. I expect surgery to be scheduled for some time in December. Like everyone, I have a number of concerns, but my situation seems quite different than most. I am quite active physically, cycling over 100 miles per week year-round, often much more than that. On a typical multi-day ride, I burn over 4,000 calories per day. I also scuba dive and snowboard, which also have significant calorie burn. I asked my nutritionist about my ability to do these activities on a severely-restricted diet, and she either didn't believe me, or didn't have much experience with folks like me. Yep, I'm fat alright, but I am also extremely active physically, and need someone to tell me two things: 1)How soon after surgery can I expect to resume riding my bike, and 2)What kind of caloric intake should I expect to be allowed on days that I engage in vigorous exercise, and how and what should I expect to eat to sustain it? Thanks!
