Keto Diet and the timeline please help.
redlirpa posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am just in the initial stages for pre op my surgeon appointment is on Tuesday but as I go grocery shopping I want to fill my fridge with the pre op diet foods, and have read most doctors diet pre surgery is keto. I have been doing the whole30 and have lost 30 pounds in the past 3 months and can transition to keto if that's what I'm going to be put on, in my research I'm seeing that keto is listed as the worst diet of 2017 and whole 30 was right with it. My bariatric may require 3 months dietician, exercise and weight loss. My insurance doesn't, Just failed attempts and need. I'm curious about keto diet recommendations, how much weight are you suppose to lose before surgery? How many carbs do you eat to be in ketosis, how do deal with the side effects? Thank you -
Who is doing Keto and sticking with it??
NikkiPen replied to WV_Chef's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
At around 3 months post op, i began having salty carb cravings, Cheez-its, or Triscuits, etc. Dry, carb, salty is what i really wanted! When I found myself at the store buying a big box of Cheez-Itz, I realized I needed to change something. So I did some reading and research, and knowing that keto is forever, not just to get to a goal, this was a bigger jump for me somehow. But I had all that surgery and all, so why not go for the gold?? I've recently downloaded 4 cookbooks that use 5 ingredients, contain 5 carbs to make all of the keto recipes, Bfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Dessert (In Five <-- for those google searchers). These aren't bariatric geared, so I have to pay attention to the end of day totals and see if i'm lacking in any protein areas. LOTS of fun foods in there, incorporating cream and cheese and eggs into a lot, but at the same time, not having to eat eggs and bacon every morning for bfast. I've not used those ketostix, but I'm sure as this goes along, I'll want to keep up with that. I'm still just starting out. This morning I am eating a Maple Pecan Porridge, made with Coconut Flour and Ground Flaxseed, with Cinnamon and toasted Pecans. I has a great taste, and certainly filled me up faster than expected. And most of these recipes are made for either 2 or 4 servings. I'm making for me only, hubs is a carb man, but I usually can adjust for 2 servings so that i only have 1 leftover meal. -
I need some help, and answers.
xoxococojay replied to Alacroy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi and welcome!!!! I'm so excited for you to be starting your journey, don't be nervous. (Fyi: you can post wherever and whenever you want, it's a tool for you to get all the information you need) I can really only answer your second question. I think for the first question consult a bariatric surgeon in your area or even your pcp. I do know that the liquid protein diet with help shrink the fatty liver. We all have to do that anyway in order to get the surgeon to do the surgery. I would imagine that a bariatric surgeon will want you to wait until you turn 18 for the surgery. Some might consider doing it a little sooner with parental consent but i doubt it. Yes you would still qualify for surgery given your current height and weight. In the meantime i would suggest use this group and other online bariatric support groups to learn more about the process as a whole. That way when it's time for your surgery you will be completely comfortable and you'll know exactly what you want to do for your body. For example: this gives you time to research the differences between the sleeve, bypass and lapband and decide which would be best for you. It will give you an idea of how you will be eating post op etc. Best of luck to you!!! Feel free to ask any other questions and if you ever feel like you need more support privately most of us are fine with people sending us private messages with questions. We're all here to help. -jodi -
Oh man! You're still quite young. Don't let excess skin dissuade you. You could be in my shoes with Type 2 Diabetes, sleep apnea, AND high blood pressure. I wish I had thought about bariatric surgery 5 years ago. I am 40 now and just grateful for the opportunity.

Hi guys this is the only cardiac thread I found so,I'll post here for my peeps to read. I'm still collecting my requirements for RnY and went thru several cardiac tests. Visited my cardiologist Friday, only thing she found was a slightly enlarged Aortic root; since it was high normal she cleared me for bariatric surgery and I don't have to,see her for a year unless something, unforseen turns upon. Whewee what a relief. There is cardiac problems in my family tree but I seem to have dodged them. Everyone be happy for me I can see the Bariatric lightshows shining for me ahead. You're probably right! I guess it hit a chord with me because I feel like it's the best thing I've done for myself and they made it seem very scary and risky. I've never seen bariatric surgery featured as a story line on a tv show, but you're right. They probably only thought about how it advanced their story.

Considering gastric sleeve, but I'm afraid I'll be hungry and/or unwell all the time in the long run
Healthy_life2 replied to setoo's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My perspective from three years and seven months out from sleeve. My hunger and the way it made me feel was a part of why I had surgery. My health was my number one reason. Imagine having control over your food life. Food no longer controlled you. What would that feel like to you? Surgery will not take away hunger. You may not feel hungry or feel like eating in the first few months. You will have times of head hunger and real hunger. My hunger is not like it was pre surgery. It is manageable. Get in touch with a bariatric program in your area. Find out if they give seminars. Medical facts, risks and statistics are going to help you in your research phase. You are going to read many peoples personal experiences online. Some negative some positive. Your surgery experience is going to be unique to you. Many people are here for support that will be able to relate. It's normal to fear the unknown outcome of surgery. Common fears I hear are... Am I doing the right thing. risks of complications or death with surgery. will I fail another attempt of getting my weight off What if I have loose skin and what will that look like for me Hair shedding/thinning. It will grow back. what happens if I have a weight gain Will food be as good as it was (addiction) will I feel satisfied on smaller portions of food. Can I have discipline and control of food. I couldn't have lost this weight without my sleeve. I'm thankful. For me I have no regrets or complications. I bounced back quickly from surgery. I had to learn to control head hunger and deal with emotional/stress eating. I had a gain after goal and I worked it back down (136 pounds today). This is still work after goal. If you go back to old behaviors you will gain. This is about learning a new lifestyle. This is about getting your health and your life back. You can have this long term if you are willing to change and work for it. -
I am in the researching stage. Has anyone used Dr. Pasten? I am also looking at Mexicali Bariatrics but they are more expensive. Thanks

I'll share the foods that are on my list of pureed and very soft foods, but some that spring to mind are: Nonfat yogurt (regular and Greek) Nonfat cream cheese (weird to think of just eating some cream cheese, but OK) I've also been eating unsweetened apple sauce and enjoying it, may try sprinkling some cinnamon on top. Also, I highly recommend this: https://www.amazon.com/Fresh-Start-Bariatric-Cookbook-Weight-Loss/dp/1623157730/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1515181665&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=bariatric+cookbook&psc=1

I have a quick question I'm in the last stages of getting approval for the gastric sleeve surgery,up until yesterday I was excited.Reason being is because I decided to call my insurance company just to ask some general questions.I basically asked about coverage I have BCBS NY.I wanted to know about the coverage of the surgery the rep I spoke with yesterday mentioned something about my out of pocket cost saying that if it was at like $600 it would be 80% coverage and if it was at $3500 it would be 100% coverage. She didn't go in depth on my situation specifically she was really just speaking in general well anyways I'm worried now cause i started doing the math and I really can't afford to pay huge amounts like I have bills so idk. Also she mentioned they cover up to $20,000 in full for bariatric surgery as like the max amount.I guess my question is if there is a out of pocket cost is that something that is expected all at once,or do they allow you to pay it over a course of time.Or is that I have to pay it up front or no surgery at all?Sorry if I'm all over the place but I'm just extremely worried now...and maybe I am just getting ahead of myself and need to be patient and wait to see what the outcome is but that is eaier said than done

Spring 2018 Sleevers??? Looking for support, surgery buddies, advice, etc.! Lol.
SueperGal replied to WLS4ME33's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just started reading the book The Sleeved Life by Pennie Nicola this week. It is from 2012, so the sleeve was just starting to gain popularity. She goes over the different surgeries and gives specific reasons why she chose the sleeve over the others, which I find helpful. I was going either lapband or sleeve. My surgeon does not perform lap band and actually is transitioning many of his patients from lap band to sleeve. Between that, the information received at the first session, and my other research, I felt sleeve was the best option for me. P.S. If you have a kindle, the book is free with the Kindle Lending Library :-). There are some Bariatric recipe books with good reviews that are also free with the lending library on there!! -
New BariatricPal Tracking App! What Features Do You Want?
xoxococojay replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It should def track workouts. And it would be nice if you could customize your own personal macro goals or have it do it for you based on your diet preferences. (Ex: someone following a reg bariatric diet will have different macros than someone following keto or a vegetarian etc) Reminders to enter food and workouts would be awesome too -
Hey everyone! I've been MIA for a bit. The holidays were a real challenge for me. Home with my 4 kids baking cooking and making gingerbread houses and all the things we love to do. I decided to give myself a bit of a break. Ate some cookies and enjoyed the holiday. I didn't lose anything but I didn't gain either. Happy to say that after the 1st of January I got right back on track and am down 2 pounds... Having said all that...my daughter and I did some binge watching of This is Us over the break. I was surprised at the Kate story line where she considers having bariatric surgery and then decided not to because it was too risky. The doctor talked about an intense vitamin regimen and all the things that would be potential "problems" with having the surgery. The character, Kate, decided to not to go through with it because it was so terrifying. Now, I know this is just a tv show, but having just gone through this surgery a few months ago I was disappointed they showed it in such a negative light. Of course, everyone has to do what's best for them personally, but I wonder if anyone watching the show was considering surgery and had second thoughts.

Spring 2018 Sleevers??? Looking for support, surgery buddies, advice, etc.! Lol.
jmm16 replied to WLS4ME33's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The sleeve is actually the most common bariatric surgery in the U.S. now and has few complications. I've read studies that state the sleeve can be as effective as bypass so that's why I'm doing it. Plus it seems like I hear about complications with the lap band all the time. For me, it was an easy decision. -
I've been searching for a drugstore Vitamins that meets the bariatric standards and haven't found anything yet. I'm doing two chewables daily. They're super gross and I'd love to find something else [emoji23]. I'm also doing bariatric calcium chews. Again, haven't found a drug store equivalent. Everything else I'm getting at the drug store. Biotin, probiotic, and Iron (vitonC, which is easy on the stomach). I haven't done the math, but these things are not terribly expensive and are things I probably should be taking whether I had surgery or not.

Pre op diet wearing me down
kakatlady612 replied to jboa51's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A wise person once said " one can do Anything for 6 weeks at a time" but I'm not certain it was a bariatric patient. Don't know if I would chew my own arm off but don't come around me dressed like an ice cream cone or slice of steak with grilled Portobello mushrooms. I know that the Vitamin stuff is really hard to figure out because the Medical Community is not always on the same page. But...with that said, one of the things my Surgeon really stressed that using a BARIATRIC Vitamins are the best way to get what we need after our WLS. With that said, I figured that I wanted to take whatever I need to be healthy. I use CELEBRATE Multivitamins. They are something I feel that I don't want to take chances with. They aren't that expensive I don't think. I also use Capsules and my DR told me if they were too large to swallow that I could open them and put them in food. Applesauce, yogurt or oatmeal. They weren't too large for me. I did use Centrum chewable right after my RNY, but they were way t sweet for me. Just like was said, think of the price as an investment towards your health. Good Luck. Have a great evening.

This is an ad from Bariatric Advantage that really drives my point home. You would need 58 Centrum chewable vitamins every single day if you wanted to meet the latest ASMBS (American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery) guidelines!

Medicare Lapband Revision Denials Low BMI
Jengo825 replied to SKF's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
If this was an emergency revision, the denial could be due to incorrect billing codes. I had the same problem with my revision so I contacted my surgeon’s office to check the coding. When they recoded as an emergency (which it was) insurance paid for it. I am on Medicare so they don’t pre- approve, so when I got the bill, I was shocked too! I also found out Medicare doesn’t pay for more than one surgery at a time and mine involved 1)LB removal 2) Bypass 3) and hernia repair. The bariatric center recoded and gave reasons why it had to be done at once. So anyway...have your Bariatric center help you. Best of luck getting your sleeve....and with your approval. BTW, my secondary is BCBS. However, any secondary should pay the remainder if it is approved my Medicare. -
Sticker shock!
brendamcfarlane14 replied to MonkeyNurse's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
While vitamins will be necessary the rest of your life, the type you have to take (chewable vs pill) can change after your Dr oks the move so you may be able to move to cheaper alternatives. My NUT gave me a list of 4 brands and how much I would have to take of each and what I would need to take to supplement if I went with the Flintstones chewables. My clinic also has deals set up with the major brands so I get 15% off by using my clinic code. With Bariatric advantage, I also save by putting my vitamins on subscription to be automatically shipped and then I get free shipping on those orders. My GERD drug which I won’t need to take any longer is $276 (my co-pay thru mail order) every 3 months. Not mentioning what I’ve saved ok food, I am saving money. -
Looking for some guidance!!
Healthy_life2 replied to LMC2018's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Did you have a pre op class or a dietician consultations? If not. Google some reputable bariatric surgeons offices. Call and see if they can email you education and diet progression information/instructions The thread below might give you some other advice that may help https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/408366-could-someone-splain-this-to-me/ -
OP, I get your fears...particularly if you have a clotting disorder. At the end of the day....what this surgery comes down to...is benefit -vs- risk. For now...continuing to attempt to diet might be your best choice, and it might not. Get a consultation with a hematologist about your specific blood issues. Run some tests. Talk about your comorbidities and ask that they help you to decide which side of benefit-vs-risk that bariatric surgery falls on for you. Also, if you decide to go through with it...a hematologist can give specific recommendations for the best strategy for you...to prevent a clot. (sometime they can even put clot catching filters in) Keep in mind that obesity related health concerns can kill you just as fast as a clot. Heart attacks, strokes, obesity related cancer....there are a lot of incentives for acting aggressively to correct obesity. That said, I don't know enough about your particular blood issue to give you good advice about the risk you personally carry. A hemotologist would. I think going for a consult would be the best way to make up your mind. Good luck!
