    Ideal Weight

I'm only five feet tall and my surgeon said I'd probably get to 150. Now he did not say that was my ideal weight, but I guess that might be where a lot of his patients end up at. I'm aiming for 140. In my entire adult life I was never under 128 pounds, with age, menopause, lower activity level, I don't think I'll ever see 128 again. No problem for me. I'll be fine If I end up at 150. I had no co-morbids before banding and would consider myself healthy, if still overweight by some random chart. If a taller person can be healthy at 150, why wouldn't I be. As long as my BP is good, my cholesterol is good etc. I know much thinner people that have much worse eating habits and have HBP or high cholesterol, does that make them healthier because they weigh less? I know one woman that is very thin but she wasn't eating, her calories came from alcohol, is that healthy? You can decide what you are comfortable with.

    Risks on WLS

Keep to the doctors guidelines and don't go back to old habits! My granny is against the surgery bc one of her friends have passed away but why did she pass away bc she drank alcohol a lot!! It all depends how you take care of yourself Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  3. Well, it's been a while since I posted here. I thought I would come clean and admit that I've developed an alcohol addiction. I knew the risks but I never thought it would happen to me. For the past month I've been drinking every day, mostly whisky. I drink first thing upon waking up and then hit a few shots each hour. I've been drinking at night until I pass out. It started because of tooth pain. I had some left over lortabs and was using those but when those ran out I was still in pain. So I turned to alcohol. Previously, I only drank when I went out on Fridays and Saturday, if I went out at all. So I'm officially hooked now. And alcohol effects me completely differently after surgery than before. Before just one single drink would leave me flushed and stupified. Today I can drink like a gallon (over-estimation) and be fine. I no longer get hot or flushed from drinking and it takes a lot to make me drunk. I think the surgery effected my metabolism somehow. Anyway, I'm living proof that this can happen to those of us who have had the surgery. The only "good" news is that I haven't gained any weight. That actually surprised me. But I guess I haven't been eating much. Then again, I haven't lost any weight either. I'm still 14 lbs away from my goal weight. I thought about getting professional help but my friends think I don't need it because I haven't been drinking like this for long. They want me to taper off. I have been drinking like 5 or 6 shots before work and my best friend says to slowly taper it off to just one shot before work before trying to cut it out completely.

    Alcohol Addiction

Thank you for your honesty and sharing. As others have said, you do not need to do this alone. AA, a counselor or therapist, your physician, and recovering alcoholics can all be a tremendous help. You do not have to face it alone.

Foods you can no longer tolerate

I followed my doctor's strict guidelines. So didn't t try questionable foods like lettuce or a cracker until 6 months. I got really sick from oatmeal around 6 months but I think it was too thick and got stuck. It was bad enough that I still haven't tried it again and have no plans to ever try it. Around 8 months I started trying pretty much everything. However I have only literally had 1 bite of regular ice cream, a tiny Halloween size candy bar, one piece of bread, 1/4 cup of noodles etc. at a time. I tolerate a variety of foods but don't want to try a large amount and get sick. I still haven't tried cake with icing, soda, or alcohol and have no plans to. I have only had a few grains of rice that were stuck to chicken and was worried that would cause an issue but it was fine. I am pretty scared to push the limits.

    Alcohol Addiction

I have known someone that developed an alcohol addiction after weight loss surgery. He spoke about no longer being able use food to numb his pain and turned to alcohol to numb his pain. Since he was familiar with how Overeaters Anonymous works he quickly got into Alcoholics Anonymous and was successful. I would seek experienced help if I couldn't change myself. This is serious. Best wishes!

    New to site

I don't smoke but I do drink alcohol. I have been enjoying myself too much over the holidays. It did not make me sick or anything but has stopped my weight loss cold. I guess this was what the warning about "drinking calories" was all about. I'm back on the wagon (well, maybe not totally lol).

    Breakup Because I Had WLS

I have not personally experienced this, but I have heard divorce rates are high for people who have WLS. However, it sounds like you dodged a bullet! We don't need an abundance of food and alcohol to have fun!

    Why,why,why

What exactly are you guilty about? Are you paying out of pocket, thus taking money away from something your family needs right this minute. Because even if you are self pay you probably will pay just as much if not more over the course of your lifetime paying for weight related illnesses. If you need a hip replacement or pacemaker would they tell you to live without. Would you tell someone who needed drug or alcohol rehab to think themselves well? Of course not.
  11. I was told by my nutritionist.. 'you would really have to go some to stretch your stomach to its original size and regain all your weight'. As for my surgeon - he said 'yes, there is flexibility in the organ (that is what the stomach is designed to do) so if you overeat every day, you will, over time, stretch it out a bit. Conversely, if you eat little, it will shrink.' Consequently.. and my advice? Listen to your pouch and when it says stop - stop. Asking for absolutes on the 'average stretch of a pouch', is, although i'm sure that this is not your intention, like asking 'how much to the millimeter of alcohol can I consume before i can't drive a car'. There are guidelines provided us, based on average consumption levels and associated performance. Some people can drink more and process it more quickly, like some people can eat more and process it more effectively. Asking for any further specificity than that, is pretty futile. Only you know what your stomach tells you in comparison to the guidelines offered you. None of us know exactly the amount we can eat - because each food type has a different effect on us and this also changes day by day. For example, some days I can eat bread and some days, I'd rather gouge my eyes out with a rusty spoon than put bread in my belly. I just eat what I fancy and stop when I feel a fullness below my sternum. That feeling that if I ate another mouthful, it'd be up into my esophagus. That's the only gauge I know and that's all I have to go by. Best of luck in finding yours and being comfortable with it. More importantly; try not to freak out. You're not going to put all your weight back on overnight and if the scales do start going the other way, you know what you have to do.

    4/5/10

Well, back on the HCG diet - started it again on 4/01. I did pretty good until Tuesday night (3/30). Had a late dinner and did not make good choices, ate fried chicken tenders, fried shrimp, and french fries, then had two drinks!!! Can you say yuk? Anyhow, by Thursday morning was up 7 pounds. Good news, I'm down 5 of the 7 pounds in 4 days. I know a lot ot it that I gained was water weight, alcohol seems to do that to me. Anyhow, will stay on HCG until 4/21, leaving for my puerto vallarta trip on 4/22. So I will be taking another "break" for about 4 or 5 days from the HCG diet. I will "try" and not over indulge in to much fruity alcohol drinks, but can't make promises. I just love sipping on an umbrella drink by the beach or pool! I love the sunshine, I hate the winter! Wearing a size 6 - thats right a size 6 capri pant today!!!!! I love it! I am totally loving my legs these days. My cellulite is even disappearing, I still have some, but not near as bad. I really am seeing the changes in my body, the fat is truly melting away. I'm a believer!

  14. Hello folks! I just had my 2-week follow up with my surgeon today. I am excited to be moving onto stage 4 (out of 5, being solids food and forever based on my surgical center's directions)... I am able to take in soft foods and thicker purees. My surgeon told me that I can resume drinking alcohol again at the 2 month mark. I know this might be a contraversal topic and I know many have different opinions and experiences. But if all goes as well I plan to resume drinking and enjoy some alcholic beverages again. I have heard that others do drink beer (which is carbonated). I am willing to try it and see how my stomach tolerates it. But I am normally a liquor drinker or mixed drinks. I am used to drinking vodka in sprite or ginger ale. I am trying to plan what non-carbinated drinks I can make especially with vodka. I would love to find a ginger based drink because it would go well with vodka in my opinion. Does anyone have any ideas of what alcoholic drinks to try when weening back into alcohol. *note* note I also know that I will try my first drink at home and be aware that it will affect me quicker. I know that I need to be aware of my calorie intake and know that alcohol = sugars. -Joe M.

    Alcoholic Drinks

I personally won't drink a drop of alcohol until I know my liver issues are completely resolved first. Another criteria I'm imposing is to be my bottomed-out weight, so I don't have to worry about stalls that will result. Like others here have shown with their planning, it makes 100% sense to go at it from a logical perspective.. just be careful if you're doing any sort of exercise or prolonged standing. Keep hydrated and fed.
  17. The closer I get to my 2 week pre-op (Sept. 5th) the more I think about the life changes I am about to commit to,,,for life. I am cognizant, very aware and frustrated at the same time as my eating habits and style should be changing as we speak, and it has not. Knowing that I will be on this very strict diet for 2 weeks seems surreal to me, and knowing after the surgery I will have to be disciplined and very committed to this or I will not succeed in my new journey. Right now I think about going to a Chinese buffet for lunch and gorging myself, what the hell is that all about? How can I make the mental changes? I want to , I need to and I have to. Having worked with my Endocrinologist for a year now and talking with my therapist a few times has me thinking more about "getting it" and "doing it" mentality. This is an ongoing process, I understand this and I hate to say "but", but I am 61 years old and very used to my lifestyle. 17 years ago I quit tobacco and 2 years ago I quit alcohol, now if I can do those "cold turkey" then what the hell? How do I find the special key to unlock the part of my mind to overcome this? Personally, I do not ever speak my mind like this but I want it so bad it hurts. Any suggestions how I might find the peace to put these thought demons out of my head? Hopefully this makes sense and someone can relate with what I am going through, I don't have much time to "get it".
  18. My diet DOES allow alcohol at 6 weeks, but nothing carbonated for another month.

    Alcoholism & WLS

Before getting my sleeve, the pre-op cardiologist made a remark that I didn't really remember until now. He said "I see a lot of people get weight loss surgery and become mild alcoholics. Don't know why that is but be mindful of that." It was weird to me because I don't drink, but for those of you who are much further out than I, have your liquor consumption habits changed? Did you not before, but do now? Did surgery change how you feel about alcohol? Or is this just one of those things I shouldn't be too worried about?

    Alcoholism & WLS

@@VSGAnn2014 I know that wasn't your meaning, I was just responding to the concept that there is a clear line when a person is an alcoholic. Where I live, there is a big wine and beer with dinner culture, and there are plenty of people having wine daily with dinner that dont get drunk and are not alcoholics. Those recommendations come from studies about health risks like cancer etc. For some sad reason, even at the same bodyweight, alcohol is more harmful for women than men.
  21. 0. Type of Surgery? RNY 1. How long have you been in maintenance mode? 20 months 2. What's your current height and weight? 5' 7", 150 lbs 3. How many calories do you eat daily (on average) to maintain your weight? around 1500 4. What kind of focus do you put on Protein -- number of grams or anything else you want to say? around 65 grams of protein per day derived from meals. 5. What kind of focus do you put on carbs - number of grams or anything else you want to say? I avoid like a plague processed sugar (including sugars with calories, such as honey. The exception being sugars found in fruits and milk.) Instead I use artificial sweeteners (Splenda), artificial sweeteners (Stevia and sugar alcohol) and the sugars found in fruits and milk. I try and limit my complex carbs (bread, Pasta etc.) to about one meal a day. 6. What other nutritional tips / tricks are working for you that help you maintain? I rely on fats to avoid hunger. As a result I eat real butter, whole milk and cream, meat other than lean meat. [in the weight loss phase my stomach was cut away and fats caused immediate dumping but after the first year my intestines took up the function of processing fats and I was able to incorporate it into my diet again.] 7. Which foods, if any, do you avoid altogether? Milk shakes, ice cream, any foods with more than 5 grams of processed sugar per serving. 8. What exercise regimen (exercise types and frequency) do you follow? I rely on normal physical activity (manual labor). For example last year I moved 100,000 pounds of gravel by hand and 50,000 pounds of concrete landscaping blocks. 9. What role, if any, has counseling or therapy played in your WLS success? None 10. What advice would you offer WLS patients to help them be successful? The approach to succeed in the weight loss phase is different than the maintenance phase. They need to adapt to the transition or if they follow the same rules, they may begin to put the weight back on.
  22. Thank you for telling me I will wait until at least 4 months I don't drink alcohol so water is all I'm having but u get your drink on for me. Lol

    Quest Protein Bars?

Treated as a convenience food for grab and go, they are quite good. They have a variety of flavors to try, so something should fit your tastes somewhere. Compared to many such products, they don't have any coatings, icings or layerings that melt, so they hold up well to keeping in the car or gymbag for when needed - some people like to nuke them a few seconds to warm them up. There are some other brands that have similar numbers that one can try as well, though they often have a lot more sugar alcohols that some are sensitive to., but Quest have minimal amounts or none of them.
  24. I remember an old Dr. Oz show, he suggested playing video games as a way to help lose weight! This was before the WII and the Kinnect type games. Anyway back to the subject, My nutrisionist said she had a Patient who said they were having a problem with trying not to drink (alcohol) to much, so I think, it is true, you have to be careful not to trade one addiction for another. Mine may be this support group!
  25. You need to talk to someone. You swapt out 1 addiction for another. This is very common. I new a guy that was over 400Lbs. , and lost the weight with the Band. Only to take on Alcohol, and Narcotics...
