  1. Before surgery, I had to lose 5% of my body weight. I wasn't given a particular diet to follow - but it was suggested that I start by replacing one meal / day with a shake and work my way up to two shakes as Meal Replacements. Every doctor has their own requirements. Your surgery is in two days. I would urge you to call your doctor - let them know how much you've lost and ask them if it's going to be enough. Two bites here and there probably will not make a difference. Two meals here and there probably will. For what it's worth, at pre-op sessions, the team at my doc's office specifically said that the pre-op diet is not a test to see how you'll do post-op. They know we have food issues. The weight loss pre-op is to shrink the liver to make the surgery easier for everyone.

    Lap band removal question

The expectation is that, barring unusual circumstances, the band would remain. It serves to maintain the weight loss. If your band is in fact a problem in medical terms, it would make no sense that your insurance plan would not cover removal. If a person wants the band removed for non-medical reasons, then I can see the plan refusing to pay.
  3. Perhaps thinking of the constant vigilance required to maintain one's weight loss as a chore that one must do daily isn't such a bad thing. If you never washed your dishes or scrubbed the toilet you would live in filth. Some people do but I couldn't live that way, not that I'm suzy super housekeeper, mind you. It does suck, like lots of not particularly enjoyable but necessary aspects of life. I've recently been testing my sleeve with lots of low-quality fat food=garbage. Essentially a reaction to stress. The result was a 3 lb gain, mostly Water retention caused by the excess sodium. My body stubbornly refused to let go of that excess Fluid for two days. "Take that!" It told me! "Eat crap and you won't be able to crap!" And it mocked me as I looked at my swollen ankles. So I'm back on the wagon after my little binge. Sugar is one enemy but salt can be just as bad for me. I love them both, God help me! Recently downloaded an app called "eat slower". It's free and simple and so far is helping me to stop inhaling my food, which has always been a problem for me. I've noticed when I use it that I pay more attention to my food and thus enjoy it more and that I feel the restriction better and thus stop eating before becoming overfull (another issue of mine). Good God, after reading this it's freaking miracle that I managed to lose any weight even with the sleeve!
  4. My weight has been stable but my size isn't. I guess due to exercise / weight training. My size 4 pants are loose. I hesitate to say I'm a size 2. I read folks in maintenance will level off and regain 10-15 pounds. How true that is?? I don't know but if it is, when will it?? I'm investing heavily in a new wardrobe and really would hate to end up with a closet full of "One day I'll get back to that size" clothes again
  5. I was having trouble with my kindle... not sure why. Fiddleman's post was well written and much of it resonanted with me. I am 2.5 years out - so similar situation timewise anyway. I was not the one who said that plastics reduced chance of regain due to fat cell removal. I don't know if that is true or not, but I am not inclined to believe it because #1 I think most of the really harmful fat cells are in our torso between the organs and #2 I know several people who have regained after plastics. I had two reactions to the thoughts... first is that "normal" people put on weight especially as they age. If you look around you will notice that many many people could stand to lose 20-30 pounds. I think as the formerly obese we are so afraid of regaining everything that we tend to get caught up in the idea that we must do whatever it takes to remain at a certain target. Heck I WANT to stay where I am too, so I get it, but my point is that normal people eat a bit more and gain a bit of weight and that isn't the end of the world either. I do think that the possibility of a "normal" weight gain is something that many of us should wrap our heads around as a possible long term outcome and not let it turn into a massive regain. My second thought was along the lines of what you were saying. I am sometimes shocked at how little I eat compared to others. There is this little part of me that wonders why I don't weigh even less...haha... I sometimes wonder if it is sustainable, but for now it is not a problem. I realize that it can change in a heartbeat though. There is something about eating low carb/clean - in my opinion bigger influence then working out - that makes you lose your appetite for the junky stuff. I feel like I was more worried about regain at 2 years out then I am now 6 months later. I know it could still happen though.
  6. I am more concerned about health. I have edema, so weighing me is not the greatest right now. They can't go 'oh your BMI is good and I'm showing the signs of malnutrition pretty well' and think that if your weight is ok, you're not ill. I was cachexic at normal weight and all bloodwork fine - except the prealbumin level. It was showing at 6 months 1 day I went thru 4 pounds in 5 days and that's not normal. That was the clue. Then my prealbumin was dropping down down to 15 ... they really need to consider that the definitions of things has changed. Had they been reading the medical research from several years ago to know, malnutrition is not just 'oh they're 16.5 BMI its a problem'. The same thing for low values or high values or learn how to interpret bloodwork in light of the patients symptoms and their history.

    im just wondering...

I am your height and my starting weight before pre-op diet was 235. I was banded May 13, 2010 and could not be happier with my results. I now weigh between 167-170. I am a compulsive weigher at least 2X a day. But it keeps be on my toes. I hate to admit it but I haven't done any real exercise and I have the droopy arm thing. I believe if I had exercised I wouldn't have had them so badly. As for my stomach well there are a few stretch marks but considering you couldn't see them before I can live with them and if I would exercise I could probably tone up what I have and lose my last 20 pounds to goal. I am really enjoying my new body and wearing clothes that may be a bit young for me but I don't care. My recommendation is to EXERCISE. I blame having 2 kids and husband and thier after school activities and school work and I'm sure I can come up with some other reasons but the fact is I don't like it and was seeing results without it. Although, I am smart enough to know that with moderate exercise I may be able to pass my goal. I am planning on starting to ride bikes with the kids and play in the yard more and do some gardening this year and put that Wii to use. Good luck on your journey. Feel free to ask me anything you want to know I am an open book.

    Confession!

I'm having surgery on September 30 as well. I've been having the same cravings with a lot of different types of foods I know I won't ever eat again. I don't know if it's right or wrong. I'm still following my diet more days than I'm not and I'm still losing weight. I start my preop diet on September 15 and I'm very nervous about it. How about you?
  10. I never stated the pre op was to loose weight.

    Protein powder?

I'm wondering when any of you started lifting weights after surgery?
  13. there is not enough room in your new stomach for food and liquid. When you are eating you need to get in as much nutrition as possible, if you drink while eating, you don't have enough room for the food and can end up not getting in the ammounts of protein etc that you need for a healthy recovery and weight loss.

    Getting plicated tomorrow

Thanks for asking....I"m doing ok. I haven't lost a lot of weight because my new doc hasn't put in a very big fill. I have lost some, though - about 10 pounds. He's going slowly and I haven't returned to get another fill in a while because he makes me wait for two hours after my appt time before seeing me and then I get a lecture for about 20 minutes - no, I'm not exaggerating - about how I'm addicted to carbs and I must eat less than 30 grams of carbs a day if I ever hope to lose weight. It's a long story - but the man is absolutely OBSESSED with living la vida low-carb and thinks carbs are of the devil -and- that I am his willing servant if I ever let even one gram of the wretched stuff touch my lips. (Whatever, dude. Not all carbs are the same. It's not like I got fat eating apples, kwim? And they are full of carbs. It's the carb/fat combo you got to look out for - it's not the apples, it's the apple pie) I'm wating for a day off to go see him again. I can't work all day with petulant teenagers all day and then go sit in his waiting room for two hours and then listen to a lecture that I've heard at least a dozen times before. Nope. Can't. I'm wating for christmas break to go for another fill. Then, maybe I'll see better weight loss.
  15. Hello all, I haven't posted before, but I have read A LOT! What a great supportive bunch! Anyway, I am in the very beginning of my banding journey. I have had my seminar, and am meeting with my surgeon on Feb. 3rd. I am really nervous! I'm not nervous at all about the meeting, but nervous about insurance. In 2008, I started this same process - when I went to meet with the surgeon, someone in insurance called me in to tell me that my insurance calls my weight a pre-existing condition, and I would have to wait six months and try again. I was so discouraged that I didn't return until Jan. 14 of THIS YEAR. So, much has changed since then, now. I'm type 2 diabetic and have high blood pressure. I didn't have either of those at the time of my failed consult. :smile2: I am just scared that Sagamore (my insurer) is going to find another reason to block this for me. Do any of you have Sagamore? What was their process like? Also, what can I expect at the consult? Thanks for letting me vent my frustration! Kim
  16. This is only my 3rd week after sleeve. I guess I have already reached my weight loss stall! I'm eating very little carbs mainly just protein and I've started walking a mile every morning ! I hope this doesn't last long!

The start of my WLS Journey

I thought about having this done several months ago, but I knew there was no way my insurance would cover it, and we don't have that kind of money. Hubby and I are paying off medical bills from his 2 knee surgeries last year. So I put it on the back burner..... waaaaayyyy back. I had decided it would never happen and was starting to think I would be obese and unhealthy the rest of my life. But my Mother approached me last month and offered my Dad's bonus from work to pay for it. Could anyone have better parents??? Mine are not rich by any means, but say that my health is something worth paying for. They are the best parents in the world!!! Just thought I would let you all know what a blessing this really is going to be for me!! Because of this surgery I may become more fertile and able to get pregnant, and by losing the weight I will be able to run and play with my children, and not have them be embarrassed because I'm the "fat mom". I will be able to walk up a flight of stairs without being winded. I will be able to fasten my seatbelt without sucking it all in. Planes will be a breeze, as well as roller-coasters. I am looking forward to trying my hardest to use this gift I have been given, to change my life.
  18. ok..here is a question: I already feel that I look good. Ok ok..I KNOW I am big, but I still think I look good. This has probably been the biggest factor in my not losing weight over the years... seriously, you would think if I thought I looked really bad..it might motivate me more... ok.. so the question is: how will I be able to stay motivated? What if after x amount of pounds I am like.. wow.. ok..I can stop eating well now... ????? I am certainly not the only BBW out there....

    What am I feeling?

Yes ma’am. I was sleeved on March 3rd! ❤️I just looked at your profile and congratulations on how much weight you’ve lost!! You’re almost to goal! How exciting!!!
  20. Hi all! I was banded December 30th, 2011. I started rather low on the scale, so to speak, at 218. I am at 203 now, and need someone to help me stay motivated and focused, esp. since my weight loss has been sluggish, at best.

    First 6 Months

i can eat anything, but my hubby is diabetic and does most of the cooking so 99% of whats in our house is diabetic friendly, and he doesnt care for sweets like i do. so......almost anything from a diabetic cookbook is healthy, they have recipies for pizza, tacos, hamburgers , also side dishes, breads and desserts. we make a diabetic friendly thick spagetti meat sauce and use it over whole wheat pasta or by itself. yummy ! we eat lots of baked fish, brown rice and salads too. also try the book called "Fix it and forget it diabetic cookbook" for the crockpot or the others in the series . great recipies ! try frozen yogurt or weight watchers ice cream for the sweet tooth . good luck !
  22. My insurance qualified me on my starting weight, not my weight on the date of surgery. My surgeon's office confirmed this with me on my first visit. I believe that is true for most if not all insurance companies, so double check with yours!

    SOOO very nervous

think positively. the band was just a tool, youve done the hard work to get this far. go back to liquids and mushies after the diet. keep an old fat pic around for the times you want to eat something you shouldnt. congrats on the lost weight. looks like youre almost at your mini goal.
  24. So tonight I decided it was time to go do some shopping (which I absolutely hate). All of my clothes are getting a bit big and baggy. So I ran into JC Penny's and started walking over to the area where I normally shop. They have rearranged the store a bit and I think I looked a little lost. One of the sales clerks asked if she could help me and she showed me where the womans section was. I started walking in that direction and she told me "I think you are going the wrong way". I said excuse me? and she said "you don't belong in that section". I thanked her and told her I had been working on losing weight and I wasn't sure what size I currently needed and started to walk back over to the womans section. She cut me off and told me "no, I'm not letting you go over there, you need to look in this section over here." I'm sure the look on my face was something like, you are crazy. She told me to shop in this other area and try to prove her wrong. The good news is I couldn't! I was ready to go back and give her a big hug.
