  1. After 2 weeks pre op diet and a week and 4 days of protein shakes and broth I ventured out and had a cup of Panera broccoli and cheese soup. First off what a treat with the little pieces of broccoli and carrots. I know I’m supposed to strain the pieces out but I haven’t had any issues getting anything down and the pieces are blended for the most part. Anyway it was delicious and it’s the first time I’ve actually felt full after eating. Im looking forward to finishing the rest of my soup tomorrow at lunch!!!
  2. I am five years out from my sleeve. I am going in next week for an EGD as my surgeon suspects my hiatal hernia is blocking my sleeve. I am only able to eat a couple ounces at a time without feeling terribly full. I read a message here where someone stated their surgeon was able to push the sleeve back into place during their EGD. I have never heard of this before. Has anyone else heard about hernia symptoms being relieved during an EGD?

    Eating too fast maybe?

I was drinking three protein shakes a day pre-op. Now they feel heavy, 8 oz is a lot to get down, and I need to get at least two down per day. I was throwing it up every time I'd drink a third of one. I tried two others without any change. I gave up. I am not taking the vitamins with food because when I take them it feels like I've eaten a meal. I have the Bariatric Advantage choc chews. I loved them after sleeve surgery, not now, and one fills me up! I am drinking two glasses of FairLife lactose free milk every day. The office is closed today and tomorrow because of the weather. I will call Monday. Thank you.

    Stomach Pain

I had a revision from sleeve to RNY 11 weeks ago tomorrow. I was severely dehydrated a month ago, uncontrolled vomiting, BAD headache. I should have gone to the ER, but the wait was hours. It took four days before I was feeling better. I am back to drinking Pedialyte again, I was up at 4:30 AM vomiting. I have Phenergan suppositories, it knocked me out but I finally was able to rest. Even when this isn't going on, I can only eat an oz or 1.5 oz at a time. I weigh and/or measure my food. Several times a week an hour or more AFTER eating I'll have been gurgling and then it starts churning right above my breastbone. I know I'll have to throw up. Sure enough I do, and I'll feel better. I am going to contact the doctor; my bloodwork and my next follow-up visit is the second week in March. I want to know if I'm overreacting, if not, how do I word this to him where it makes sense? I am only getting in 30 - sometimes 70 grams of the 100 he wants me to get. I am not taking all my supplements. I took my iron and multi this morning and threw it up.

    Hello

Hi, Not sure which procedure you got done- I had the sleeve one, and I can tell you, 2 weeks post-op, I'm still not hungry. During Phase 1, I made sure to sip sip sip all day. What helped me a lot was diluted apple juice. I would definitely not recommend drinking with a straw and also drinking while eating. Poor thing. I hope you feel better soon. Congrats on the 14.3 lbs loss! That's awesome! Take it one day a time, and sip sip sip ♥ Good Luck!

    Hello

Hi..... today marks one week post op. Started the journey last August and my surgery was 1/27. My biggest (and most unexpected) hurdle has been NO DESIRE TO EAT. NOT EVEN A LITTLE. I called my doctors office on Tuesday bc I was extremely weak and not sleeping. Went in on yesterday and I had dropped 14.3lbs (starting weight was 264.3 and I was 250 at weigh in) Doc told me to drink for juice or something with sugar in it and switch to ensure drinks. He's worried about me getting malnourished. Said we will get back on track with the diet once I'm feeling better. I did that but the only mistake I made was sipping through a straw AND drinking while eating soup. HUGE MISTAKE. I won't do that again. Today is better though. Has anyone else gone through this as far as NEVER being hungry?

    Surgeon's advice after vomiting

I tried chewables and I couldn't choke them down they were so gross. I switched at two weeks out to capsules.

    Stalls GRRRRR

I am right there with you. I have been at a steady 2lb loss a week, and just in the last 2 weeks its come to a screeching halt. Still getting my protein, fluids, and movement everyday, so I just have to chalk it up to part of the process. From what I've read, stalls can last a few weeks to a few months, just depending on the person. I'm trying really hard to not focus on the scale and just appreciate how far I've come and how much better I feel now vs. 5 months ago.

    Stalls GRRRRR

Right there with you, my surgery sister. I had a three-week stall and it made me insane. Then this week—WHOOOOOOSH. Three pounds practically overnight. Now, obviously there's something going on in there. I have a theory that the Epsom salt bath I took after a physically intense day reduced some inflammation, but who knows.

    Stalls GRRRRR

I have heard people who have had stalls last for up to six weeks on here and then the loss started again. I was worried that I was going into maintenance too but I am a little closer to “normal” BMI and I worry that my body is just happier at the higher end of that normal range. Honestly I will be thrilled if I get to my goal of normal BMI. I actually gained four pounds now (my grandma was in hospice and just passed away Monday so I was definitely eating more than I should) and I have a post op appointment today so I get to go In and face the NP knowing I haven’t lost much since my last visit 😢. This may sound crazy Or silly but can you clear a path to walk from one end of your house to the other? I have a tiny house and am surprised I haven’t worn out the wood laminate but I walk back and forth like this daily. I do it because the treadmill is hard on my knees and just walking in my house doesn’t hurt them.

    Need to lower A1c

My story took place over three months (not just two), but... In early June, my A1C was 10.8. It was one of the lab results that made me decide to pursue surgery. My doctor added evening insulin to my existing diabetes meds, and I immediately made changes to how I ate -- but mostly just when I was home (I live alone), Whenever I was out/with friends, I would still have carbs, desserts, etc. I indulged a little at home, but I emptied the fridge and pantry of junk food and most of the time I ate better when I was in the house. Because I was still doing whatever I wanted some of the time, I never felt deprived at all. My next lab work was scheduled for early September, and I didn't learn until 2 weeks before the appointment that I wouldn't be approved for surgery unless my A1C was 9 or less! Talk about panic!! I figured there was no way it could go down almost two whole points in just three months -- especially when I could have done much more. I spent the next two weeks very stressed out...but, my new A1C wound up being 7.5! My doctor assured me there was no way the change could be attributed to just the added insulin. Anyway, my point is that you don't necessarily have to make super-drastic, super-restrictive changes in order to see significant A1C reduction within just a few months. Hang in there!

    Stalls GRRRRR

I lost 50 lbs before surgery and have lost 46 since surgery (4.5 months ago). I KNOW from everything I've read here, in my support groups, and in the information provided to me by my bariatric center that stalls are normal and inevitable. BUT THEY STILL SUCK DONKEY BALLS! I was losing about 9 lbs a month (rolling average) for the first 4 months, but since month 4, it's been just up and down the same two pounds. I'm TRYING to focus on the fact that I've gone from a 2x-3x to a large. I'm TRYING to focus on the fact that I can walk so much more quickly now. But I am so scared the weight loss has stopped. I am trying to do exercises, but I hurt my arm and my doc told me to rest it for a while. I was then doing more treadmill, but my hip started to hurt like it did when I did treadmill every day before surgery. My eating is decent but not perfect (I eat out a lot due to traveling for work, so I know my meals aren't low fat). I'm drinking so much I have to pee every hour. How long do stalls last and how do you know if you're in a stall or if your weight loss has STOPPED? (sorry for the CAPS 🤪)
  13. Sleeve_me_alone, I agree! It’s crazy all the hoops they make you jump just to deny you! I will say as these last few weeks dwindle closer to “go time”, I’m getting nervous!

Finding Fitness Opportunities in Every Situation

We had 30 inches of snow here this past weekend, so I wasn't going out on Monday (I was in SF over the weekend so enjoyed some glorious walking on Saturday and lots of airplane time Sunday), but I have been doing lots of treadmill this week. I do it in ten minute increments, every time I get too cold. However, I've noticed that my hip pain is starting to come back like the last time I used my treadmill every day, so I might switch to stairstepping or marching in place. We have an indoor pool in my building, but it's so cold and dark when I'm not working!
  15. Today is first day I didn’t have a loss on the scale. Actually put 1/2 lb on 252!!!! As I’m reading this, I’m getting ready to go walk at gym. I had my 11.5 oz fairlife chocolate protein shake for breakfast. Water while walking. 1 cup of tomatoe vegetable(strained of course) soup for lunch . More water, Okios pro yogurt for dinner. Hot tea and jello cup for dessert. I still have 4 week before I head back to work. Loving the process so far, looking forward to phase 3 next week with purée veggies and chopped meat!!

Dr says no more protein shakes

Yeah this doesn't seem right to me either. During the first 6 weeks your body is healing from surgery. It's common knowledge that incisions and even the muscles and tissues cut internally need protein to heal, even extra protein at times for surgeries with larger incisions, so this seems counterproductive to me.

    My experience… sleeved on 1/22/22

Hello all! I definitely am protecting the pouch! The most strenuous thing I’ve had is 2 tablespoons of Greek yogurt! :) I broke my stall today! I’m now 244.6 with a 2 pound weight loss!! I’m so happy! Definitely thinking the fact that I hit my liquid goal yesterday had to do with the loss. Staying hydrated is super important! My meals yesterday… 20 oz coffee Protein Drink (fairlife coffee flavor with Starbucks blonde cold brew black coffee) 2 tablespoons of Greek yogurt About 4 oz of a creamy puréed chicken bacon potato Soup. And lots of water! Today I’ll be taking my Christmas tree down. Well- everything but the actual tree due to the weight restriction. Then I’ll go walk at the gym. Only today and tomorrow left of my medical leave. Back to work on Saturday night. :)
  19. There is nothing wrong with the fact that you like to eat lemon, the main thing in this matter is to know the measure, because citric acid in large quantities can harm your body. However, I would recommend replacing lemon with herbs and tinctures, they do not contain acids and they are harmless to the body, but on the contrary are useful. For example, I have been eating healthy herbs for three months, after which my health has improved. I decided to compare lemon and herbs and herbs on in my comparison, as I found out later in the blog http://jordibhealthandfitness.com herbs can promote good digestion and improve blood circulation in the body. I think herbs are just a universal thing. However, the most important thing is to use and process them correctly. Think about using herbs for food and just eat them when you want to eat something.

    Potatoes 5 weeks out

My feeling is for the first few months follow your surgeon's and dietician's guidelines. From there once you've transitoned to solid foods you can work what works for you to lose weight (I wish we could talk about fat instead of weight) in a healthy way. In saying that, there are is a varitey advice from surgeons and dieticians...but none that recommends eating what you like three days out...please anyone who is new to this site or weight loss surgery...please disregard the approach of eating what you like three days out! There are medical reasons for not doing this. Your stomach healing is at risk, and just because one person didn't experience complications from eating 'what they liked' doesn't mean you won' t.

Hello Danna, Welcome to this wonderful site and all the great advice in it. Well done on the weight loss so far.. My anxiety has improved at every pound I have lost and it feels amazing. Diet

Are you still in contact with your dietician? They’re always the best place to start. Go back to tracking & measuring your food if you don’t do this anymore. It’s easy to get complacent & less vigilant & eyeballing isn’t always accurate. I do random checks now to make sure I’m not over estimating portion sizes 😉. Ensure you’re still hitting your protein & fluid goals too. I do that every day. How many calories you should be aiming for will depend on many things like age, gender, level of activity, etc. i eat about 1300 calories. As for portion size I always consider the recommended portion size as a starting point. Sometimes I eat less, some times I can eat the recommended serving size. It depends on what I’m eating, how hungry I am & sometimes what my tummy is up for. For e.g. I can always eat more vegetables & today I could only eat about 3/4 of my usual serve of porridge. As for your food choices, again that is very individual. You need to work out a way of eating that best suits your lifestyle & is sustainable. For me that means prepping most of what I eat myself. I keep my meals fairly ‘clean’. Lowish fat, lowish carbs, no bread, pasta or rice & low sugar (usually 10g added sugar or less). No highly processed foods. No fast food & very rarely takeaway (maybe 5 times in almost three years - braised chicken, cashews & vegetables or steamed gyoza). I aim for 2 serves of meat, 3 or 4 serves of vegetables, 1 or 2 serves of fruit, 2 or 3 serves of dairy, 2 serves of multi or whole grain carbs. It’s been working for me but your needs & prefernces may be totally different.

    Diet

at that far out I'd switched over to mostly calorie counting (although I know it isn't for everyone). I had to experiment a bit to figure out at what range I maintained my weight (for me, it was 1500-1700 calories, but that's going to differ for everyone). If I went under that most days of the week, I'd lose - if I went over it consistently, I'd gain.

Dr says no more protein shakes

This concerns me too. I hope you find some answers & (more sensible to me anyway) advice. Even though your dietician appointment isn’t until April, reach out & see if you can get an earlier appointment or if they’re willing to speak to you on the phone or via email. I got off protein shakes & onto real food from week 3 & the purée stage - my choice. Sure I wasn’t eating much & didn’t meet my protein goals to begin but I was eating three times a day. All the best.
