BariatricPal Official Facebook Group: Secret or Private?
shelly420 replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I like the idea of a secret page. I see all the bariatric pages on Fb but i dont want my fb friends knowing i had this surgery, so i cant join. -
I do not believe Dr. Kurian is affiliated with NYU these days. That's Dr. Ren, Dr. Fielding, and Dr. Schwack. Dr. Kurian used to be part of that practice but went on her own a few years back. She's highly regarded and respected in the bariatric surgeon community. She's a good choice!

Down 130+ lbs With pics
mylighthouse replied to mylighthouse's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Thank you. I am happy, even when I was obese, I was happy.... funny, I know. I have just always been surrounded by love and I love life! Wow! Your surgery is tomorrow? What time? Congratulations! You will do just fine. Tips: I am certainly not going to overload you with info/tips, because there are so many things I could say. So I will give you just a few tips that really helped me a lot. 1. Belong to a support group from the start, whether it's a local support group with other WLS patients, or whether it's through a support system like bariatric pal. I do have a local support group, but due to other health problems and being unable to drive, I couldn't make those meetings. So my main support system has been here at bariatric pal. The forums are great, you can do searches for topics/questions that you might have along your weight loss journey. A lot of good advice can be found here, a lot of encouragement can be found here. It helps to have others that are going through the WLS journey too. Not all advice you find here will be good advice. That said, follow the guidelines given to you by your nutritionist and surgeon. Do what they say, including when to progress to the different food stages. 2. After surgery, it is so important to keep hydrated. Some people have a lot of trouble with nausea and getting in their liquids. If you are one of them, ask your surgeon for an anti nausea med to help, I took ondansetron, it enabled me to sip, sip, sip and get that 64 ounces minimum of liquids in. Before I got the anti nausea med, the liquids were not going down for me and I got mildly dehydrated and had to go to the ER and get IV fluids. Don't let that happen to you. 3. Get your protein in. Most doctors will tell you 60 grams a day minimum. That is a good start, if you can get more than that, even better. If you don't get protein the first day or two, that is okay, but you are going to need it after that. It will help you heal among other things. Very important. If you need more info on good proteins, then do a search for it here, and you will find lots of useful information. 4. Don't focus on stepping on the scale too much in those first few weeks. Nothing wrong with weighing yourself, but do not get discouraged if you don't lose X amount of pounds... and don't even be discouraged if you gain weight right after surgery. You are having major surgery. Weight can really fluctuate in those beginning days. Important: Don't compare your weight loss to what others have lost. Everyone is different. Don't be discouraged. 5. Last, but not least, get plenty of rest after your surgery. It really isn't a difficult surgery or recovery for most, but it's important to listen to your body and don't push yourself too hard. Finally, Tomorrow is your big day! Feelings of nervousness, being scared, excitement.... those might be some of the things you are experiencing right now. Your surgeon knows what he/she is doing and they will take good care of you. You will do great! Congratulation again! Try and get some rest tonight. -

Who has BCBS and had to do the 6 month pre-op weight loss routine?
AK37 replied to AK37's topic in Insurance & Financing
I spoke with BCBS this morning. They said I only need a doctor to say that Bariatric surgery is medically necessary; no BMI requirement, no comorbidity, no supervised weight loss. I'm still waiting to hear back from my local surgeon's office. Sent from my XT1575 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Provide advice to a bariatric dietitian/nutritionist as a current/former patient
summerset replied to Registered Dietitian Nutr's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I think nutritionists should ditch the standard advice - if the nutritionist is going to dish out standard advice the patient can as well refer to a high gloss booklet. Costs less money and might be more informative as well in some cases. IMO nutritionists should give out tailored advice. For standard advice: see a booklet. When visiting a nutritionist when it comes to bariatric surgery I demand that the nutritionist is able to do a few things: - different surgeries and the challenges that come with them, this includes supplement advice according to bloodwork - different dietary approaches (e. g. the low carb approach vs. the pound of cure) - being able to advice patients of different cultural backgrounds when it comes to food choices - being able to change gears when one approach obviously doesn't work instead of scolding the patient and telling him to "just try harder" - being able to cater to different dietary preferences of patients (might not be a good idea to advice patients to eat more fish when the thought of eating fish makes the patient want to gag, you maybe also shouldn't advice "lean meats" to a vegetarian) - being able to incorporate the patient's activity level and lifestyle into the dietary advice (e. g. shift workers, patients with high activity levels) -
58 and getting gastric sleeve surgery

I had surgery at 45 I'm 49 now. I know everyone's pain level is different. Compared to giving birth to a child, Bariatric surgery was easy to bounce back from. -
vitamins? For how long?
Miss Topaz replied to harmonyoflife's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Mine says to take a chewable multi with at least 18 mg iron and 400 mcg folate. Flintstones complete and some generic brands fit the bill and don't cost as much as bariatric speciality vitamins. My program specifically says no gummy vitamins as most don't have what we need. -
What were your sleep apnea results?
Mhy12784 replied to chamomilelavender's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
5 or more is sleep apnea. 5 is literally the lowest you can get and be diagnosed with sleep apnea, but it's so minor that they usually don't treat you unless you're symptomatic, and if they do treat you it's often with like a mouth piece or something minor. Someone with full blown sleep apnea will likely have an AHI of like 40-200 And for bariatric purposes most insurance companies require sleep apnea to be severe to count as a comorbidity -

I'm also going with the Tespo, just waiting for it to arrive. I ordered the bariatric women's formula. It looks fanatic. I'll be having the RNY so I'll definitely need great supplements for the rest of my life. This looked like a good alternative. @VSGnewguy Please let us know how your labs come back! Shells_Almost_There replied to jmangino's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I recently bought the 1-month multipack (multivitamin [looks like it's not "bariatric" though], D3, Iron, & B12) from Bariatric Pal, and I'm hoping to have a positive outcome on my next labs. -

That is a huge win for you!! Pizza is my weakness so I can imagine how hard that was. Today was ok because I was very busy with clients. I feel like tomorrow is going to be much harder. Going to the movies with a group of friends. Most of them know what is going on so it should be ok but not having a snack at the theater is going to be hard! I’m packing a couple of sugar free jellos! I bought a journal today so that I can track how I’m feeling and what I eat. A friend of mine is coming over tomorrow to pick up all my food so it’s not here tempting me. Next goal is to stock up on protein water and broth for the first week. I already stocked up on protein shakes. Do you have to have special bariatric shakes or can you choose what to drink? The first doc I went to had special ones I would have to buy from his office but the doc I decided to go with allows me to choose as long as it meets the macro requirements.

Girl talk about it.. And the closer you are to your ideal weight, the less you lose The fatter you are, the quicker it comes off, in the beginning. I was 344 at propdiet diet. 321 day of surgery and it's bounced down to 304, went up to 306, and it is now 305 and I have 2 days left before my 4 week post off On Dec 26 ( my 2 week post op I was 307) so this tells you, how long I've been in "stall mode" and it's beginnign to make me think I will the one person bariatric sleeve doesnt work for. Just my eff in luck Bahaha lol There is no reason we should lose so little this soon out But the fact that you're so much smaller than I, "Over and over" and closer to yoru idea weight, you're doing good @ losing 12lbs in your first month, imo Keep up the girl work Sincerely, Ms Depressed lol Wanna hear the irontic thing? I've struggled with 2 years , from the high 300's to right about where Im at now, the just above 300's and I have never been able to get below 300..It's been about 16 years since I've been in the 200's and I am starting to think, it's physically impossble to get below 300. Maybe I have some crazy sickeness that my body rejects ever allowing my body to creep down to the 200's, no matter how much i starve myself or work out lol Hey, how else do you explain this? Lol See me in 6 months and say, Jo, were you able to ever get below 300 pounds? Lol

Hi @46w4kds , New to the post and bariatric pal so sorry for such a late post! I had my sleeve done 12/14 everything was going great! I saw my doctor for my first post op on 12/28 and he was excited to see how well I was doing. Well, the next day I woke up with esophagus spasms. I have mixed feelings about hearing that someone else has this. I'm relieved I'm not the only one ( came to this site desperate to find someone else), but saddened because I know it SUCKS! I thought I had done my research prior to surgery and never ran into this topic. I was prescribe Blood pressure medication to relax the muscles around my esophagus. If you don't mind me asking, were you prescribed something within that family and also wanted to know how you are doing thus far. Still medicated, living fabulously without it ? I unfortunately had to start from square one with my diet post diagnosis. Liquid for 2 weeks and then puree'd food. I look forward to baby food but I would prefer for my esophagus to chill out for a second.

Weight loss surgery - eating disorder
shedo82773 replied to z0nk3y's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It can be overwhelming. We have focus on what we are eating, drinking and exercise too. I had my surgery over 4 years ago. I had some problems with strictures and I had 5 endoscopes with 4 dilation I actually couldn't even hold water down. So I really had a problem with food. I was very limited in what I could eat or drink. I developed an aversion to food. I started counseling with a local counselor, she tried but she didn't have a clue. Finally, my Surgeon and his nurse became concerned enough about my weight loss that he set me up with a Bariatric Counselor. She told me that I needed to eat every 1/2 hour and drink Boost for snacks. Now, a person that has fought so hard to lose her weight does not want to hear this. I told my hubby that I refused to trade one eating disorder for the other. I just could not justify that!! So yes we do live our new lifestyle and adjusting to what ever we have to. Listen to your Dr when he says get your weight loss within your honeymoon phase. Hang in there!! Take care of you!! -
Kate mentioned tramadol. I am on it for long term pain and it is the only thing that helps, tylenol does nothing for me. This could be up for debate, but many bariatric surgeons will tell you that NSAIDS pose no threat after a few months post op SLEEVE surgery. Gastric bypass + NSAIDS is a no-no for life. You might want to check with your surgeon and see if you are months post op sleeve whether or not he will allow ibuprofin or Aleve. Aleve used to work wonders for me.
