    pre op diet nausea

Ok, I started my preop diet yesterday and have been nauseous and light headed. Is it the protein laden drinks? The nutritionist has us drink slim fast type drink 30 minutes before breakfast. Breakfast is mushies ( oatmeal, milk, yogurt) Another slim fast prior to lunch and dinner of soup and applesauce and yogurt. Isopure at night. Help? Is it the protein? This is yuck!
  2. So today I went to U.S. Bariatrics in Ft. Lauderdale for my first fill. While I was there one thing they talked to me about was my diet, which I know I haven't been the best about, but they threw me a real curve ball in something I thought I was doing good with. No More oatmeal for breakfast! Ok so that really threw me off. They said that the oatmeal tends to turn into bad carbs so for now they don't want me eating anymore oatmeal in the mornings for Breakfast. Now here comes the real dilemma for me. I have been having oatmeal almost exclusive during the week for breakfast and I do get sick of eggs quickly. So now what do I have???? So far all I can think of is the following: cottage cheese with some fruit scrambled egg with cheese and ham yogurt with some fruit Any ideas? Please help if you have some!!!

    Greek Yogurt

I've tried them all... ya, I have never been a yogurt eater of any kind, but I truly love the Oikos key lime! Give it a try!

    Acid 5 days out

In the beginning I had a lot of acid too. The thinned yogurt and milk really helped. I found that Mrs Grass chicken soup was soothing too, you just have to strain out the noodles.
  5. I don't usually have a problem figuring out what to eat for Breakfast or lunch, but I'm continually stuck (heh heh) on what to have/make for dinner. Sometimes I'll have eggs, sometimes the insides of a burrito, grilled fish, or just a yogurt and some Peanut Butter on a tortilla. I bet others have the same problem, so I thought I'd start a "what's for dinner" thread. Post what you're having for dinner tonight - maybe we'll all get some good ideas! I went to Trader Joes this afternoon and got some salmon burgers, so I'm going to grill one of those tonight, together with a green salad and some tomatoes from the garden. What about you?

    Adjusting

I am so excited! When I got on the scale this morning I was below the dreaded 200 lbs. I have been eating around 850-950 calories a day. Chicken and fish are the best source of meat protien for me. I drink at least one protien shake a day. Yogurt and cottage cheese have become a staple. I put the cottage cheese in a food processor and add vanilla and stevia sweetner and puree it. It tastes alot like cheese cake. I always put a tablespoon of natural p-nut butter into my yogurt. It is very satisfing. Sometimes I use salt and pepper and a bit of Mrs. Dash in the yogurt doe a change It has a nice savory taste. Cantalope is a low calorie snack and it has some fiber. Speaking of fiber, I take a fiber pill every day. This whole experience has been constant adjustments and all new habits. Learning about the body that I choose to pretty much ignore, is a daily thing. But, it is so worth it
  7. Pre band breakfast bowl of cereal - muesli, oatmeal or something like Just Right or 2 pieces of toast, butter and spread or sometimes eggs on toast - 2 eggs, 2 pieces toast mid morning - binge time - nearly always a cappucino and a big cake/muffin or biscuits - six or seven perhapse lunch: usually didnt eat - continued to snack on biscuits and bits and pieces all day - and I put away a fair bit dinner: healthy meal but big - meat and 3 veg, barbecue and salad, Pasta or whatever, I cooked well, fresh and from scratch, just ate too much, a glass of wine never ate dessert - my main problem was carby sugary foods during the day and the lack of a proper meal. Post banding Breakfast nothing usually (blush) till I get to work, then maybe a yogurt, sometimes, but often yeah, nothing mid morning: piece of fruit and a cuppa lunch: tuna on crackers, dinner leftovers, a salad and small tin of tuna or some type of soup dinner: same as before, just 1/3 as much, usually a small glass of wine too. I've never been an evening eater unless someone happens to put chocolate right in front of me. However, i'm still prone to falling into the eat no meals just crap all day trap.

    Beginning to eat solids (suggestions?)

I'm 3+ months out now and tummy stills gurgles and grunts whenever i introduce new food. . sometimes it really hates the new food and slimming starts. . . i've really never vomited yet, slimed yes, and during that epiosode the new foods come up in it. . (gross i know) . . . in the beginning it would take me 45 minutes just to eat 4oz of yogurt. . but as time went along i can now sit and eat a decent meal in about 20 - 30 minutes (depending of course) . . . for example last night i had 1 jalapeno sausage link and 1 scrambled egg. . . finished most of it except about 3 pieces of sausage. . then for a bedtime snack - metamucil wafers and tea. . . (yeah I know, I know) so it does all get better. . . but make dang sure you chew the ???? out of your food or your regret it . . .

    Slider Foods. What to avoid?

Salad. I realized it last night when I ate a BBQ chicken salad (homemade) and matched what my husband ate...the night before I was stuck after three bites of pork steak. Guess I need to slow down on the roughage! I try to avoid the cakes, cookies, etc. altogether but sometimes I'll have a bite here or there. And I have a scoop of frozen yogurt with fresh berries if everyone else is indulging in mint chocolate chip--but that's only if I feel hungry and like I need something. I also found pasta like spaghetti is a slider for me so I try not to have pasta very often. I at least will eat the sauce or meat first so that I get my protein in.
  10. This is an EASY desert, and so yummy. It started off as a high fat desert made with pound cake, lemon curd, heavy whipping cream, you get the picture. Well, over the past year, I have made it so many times, I have come up with an alternative recipe and it will WOW a crowd. Wendy's Lemon berry Trifle 1 14oz Can of Fat Free Sweetened Condensed Milk 2 6oz containers of Light Lemon Yogurt 1/3 Cup Lemon juice (use fresh lemons, not the fake stuff) 2 Tsp grated Lemon Peel 1 Large Whip Cream (FREE) 1 Large pre-made Angel food Cake 1 Cup Sliced Fresh Strawberries 4 oz Fresh Blueberries (or more, but the container I get is this size) 4 oz Fresh Raspberries (or more) 1/4 Cup Slivered almonds, toasted Splenda (optional) Cut cake into 1" cubes, separate into thirds. In large bowl, combine mild, yogurt, lemon juice and peel. Fold in 2 Cups Whip Cream (or more, adjust to taste) In large Trifle bowl, place 1/3 Cake, top with 1/3 Lemon mixture, then layer all of the strawberries on top. I sprinkle a small amount of Splenda on top of the fresh fruit when it isn't in season. Repeat cake, lemon mixture and all of blueberries (and Splenda if needed) Repeat Cake, lemon mixture and all of Raspberries (and Splenda if needed) Top with whip cream Toast almonds in dry pan until brown, let cool and sprinkle on top of whip cream. Refrigerate at least 8 hours before serving.

    Delicious food and product recommendations

I am not much of a cook. I just wanted to say I have eaten Breakstone's cottage cheese for years. I also like it nekkid. I have found that I eat less if I eat meat and a vegetable as opposed to a casserole type dish. I think it is because it is more solid food. I have been eating beef with steamed broccoli. Since I am not much of a cook, I am not picky about what I eat. I open a bag of frozen broccoli and put some in a container with some butter spray and microwave it at lunchtime. I love to put low fat granola in my yogurt and the nutritionist said this helps it stay in the pouch longer so it is a good thing.

    Can Ya'll Eat Soup?

Soup goes right through the band. That is why you can eat so much. Once you start eating solid protien, your hunger pangs will be greatly lessened. When I was on cream soups, I put unflavored protein powder in my soup. It seemed to help a little. Once you start on mushies it will be easier. I had egg drop soup then and the protein was so nice. Plus I was able to eat yogurt and cottage cheese. Shaved turkey was also on my list. Just hang tough. You can do it!! You should be getting your first fill in 2 -4 weeks as well. then it will get a lot easier to stay satisfied.

    Last Supper no more!

Best advice I can offer is what my psych dr. told me - focus on the future, on what you want to become. Everytime there is a temptation in front of you, think about whether or not that will get you closer to the surgery, and approval for it. Think about where you can be in a year if you put your mind to it. And remember, you will need to drastically change your life and eating habits after surgery, so I found it way easy to simply do it a little at a time before surgery. Obviously, I could not control the amount I ate, and I still cheated, but I could control a lot of other things. I gave up regular sodas first, switching to diet [try Boylan's diet sodas, they are awesome, and regularly at stores like Cost Plus World Market - orange cream, black cherry, yum!]. Next was butter, I cooked a lot with both butter and olive oil, so I gradually pushed it to where I used mostly olive oil, even mixing my butter with olive oil for a spread on toast. Then I tried to find other foods that were healthier, switching from Ben & Jerry's to sugar free low fat TCBY frozen yogurt, and making tac salads with no tortilla, just lettuce, tomato, salsa, some extra sharp cheese, avocado, and seasoned meat. Then I focused on eating more veggies/fruits. It's a lot easier to give up beer and chocolate cake when you ease into it, starting with healthier chocolate cake [i tried making my own with baking Splenda instead of sugar] and you need to still have a taste here and there to satisfy your cravings so you don't lose your mind and raid the fridge in the middle of the night! This is the progression that worked for me, but then I really enjoy cooking and that made it easier. I hope this little tidbit helps you at least a little!

    Pre-Op Diet

My surgery is tomorrow (11/7) and I have been on a "liquid" pre-op diet for 2 weeks now and as of this morning, I have lost 15 lbs. My surgeon requires this to shrink the liver, etc. and it consists of 4-5 Protein shakes, broth, sugar free Jello, popsicles and 8oz of low carb yogurt (my big treat of the day). The first 4-5 days were really hard and then a swtich went off and I was no longer hungry. That doesn't mean I don't want to eat something, I am just not physically hungry for some strange reason. As much as I complained in the beginning, I have to admit that this phase has been worth every minute. It has given me a chance to really evaluate the decision I have made. As many say, this is not an easy fix and these two weeks have proved that already. Good luck to you!

    The diet...ideas?

My first day was pure hell! After that meltdown, I've been pretty good. The biggest factor with my new outlook was finding a Protein shake that I liked. I'm doing the unjury shakes, and so far so good. I've been mostly using the chocolate flavor with either strawberry yogurt or milk. I've been using frozen strawberries instead of ice cubes and it tastes yummy. My other "go-to" recipe is the unflavored unjury shake with crystal lite. Any crystal lite is OK, but I like the fruit punch kind the best. I just tried the chicken soup flavor last night and that was also really good. Most likely, I'll do a mix of the unflavored/crystal lite and chicken soup for after surgery. Best of luck!!

Will the biggest losers please rise?

I also didn't go low carb. I eat anything and everything, but try to generally stay around 1000-1200 calories per day. I log everything I eat and I exercise a lot (about 1 1/2 to 2 hours a day, 3-5 times per week, both cardio and strength training). When I go out to eat, I eat what I want, but I do try to think about what I am going to order before I go, so that I make a semi-sane decision (i.e. not the bacon double cheeseburger with fries and gravy, which would be my impulse choice). I am also not overly restricted - I can easily eat 3-4 oz of Protein and 1-2 cups of whatever else for a meal. What I find the band does is that it helps me control my hunger between meals. In fact, other than the evil head hunger (which I still experience), I don't really experience hunger anymore. I still love to eat though and I still love food and have not lost my taste for sugar and fat. I am kind of going with the philosophy of eat really well 90% of the time and then have whatever I want the other 10%. After that lengthy intro  - typical day for me: B: oatmeal or 1/2 c. egg white omelette with weight watchers toast snack: fruit - 1 piece or 1-1 1/2 cups lunch: 2 slices weight watchers whole wheat or multigrain bread condiments like mustard, fat free miracle whip, ketchup 2 oz of some kind of lean protein 200 g fat free yogurt (2 of the small containers) dinner: 3-4 oz of lean protein (any kind - I eat chicken, fish, pork, turkey sausage, beef, etc.) 1-2 cups of veggies (usually cooked cause I like them better) snack: 1-2 Snacks (about 100 calories each)- favorites include 100 calorie micorwave popcorn, vita muffin, 2 sticks of turkey pepperoni, no sugar pudding I will eat potatoes or Pasta, but I am usually too lazy to cook them during the week, so I am more likely to have them on weekends. I don't drink any of my calories (no protein shakes), including milk (I don't like the taste), and I take a Multivitamin and a Calcium supplement. I haven't reached goal yet (my goal keeps changing). I think realistically, I will be able to eat about 1500 calories most days once I have finished losing weight.

    Greek Yogurt

I really want you start eating this but I haven't found the right brand for me. I did freeze plain in ice cube trays to add to protein shake but I can't eat it just yet. Any recommendations

    Menu ideas??

Not sure how much mine will help, but anyway: Yesterday I had Breakfast: 2 poached eggs, a bit later a pear. Snack: banana, skim milk latte Lunch: tuna sandwich on wholegrain bread dinner: glass red wine, Pasta bake, green salad, coffee (dinner at my sister's). Today so far I've eaten: Breakfast: 1/3 cup muesli with a bit of natural yogurt and some stewed plums on top. Skim milk latte Just made another tuna sandwich for lunch to use up the other half of the can. Dinner tonight is a vegetarian recipe - roast butternut pumpkin salad with walnuts and fetta cheese, have made it before its yummmy. I'm about to go to my sisters and pick up my daughter who had a sleepover, I'm not going to come back and admit to what yummy carb laden indulgence I've slipped in, as she said she's baking, lol.

Hello I am new here !

Welcome Jenny, I too am new to this forum, I am having my VSG on 02/27/2014 (18 DAYS) ...I have my pre op and final consult with my surgeon on the 18th of this month. I had to do 5 lifestyle classes, EKG, Chest X-Ray, Psychological evaluation, nutrition consult and blood work prior to approval. I was submitted to insurance 12/16/2013 and received approval 12/19/2013! I have started taking necessary steps in order to assure my preparedness for my upcoming surgery. I have started to train myself to eat; Yoplait Greek 100 yogurt 12g of Protein, Isopure liquid Protein 40g protein and Premier Protein shakes 30g protein...I have the organic low sodium Vegetable & Chicken broths, sugar free Jell-O, popsicles & puddings, 2 oz cups, shakes, immersion blender, organic pureed baby foods(Earths Best) measuring cups, spoons, smaller portioned plates, 3oz bowls with lids for storing. Now I am just passing the days away, I do find that my mind is trying to play tricks on me and tell me that I need to eat even when I am not hungry. This was not an issue until last week, I was not required to do a liquid diet phase prior to surgery(except for the day before) BUT I am going to start one on Monday so that I will understand the dedication that it will take once I have surgery. Good luck to you and I will see you on the losers bench.
  21. mktzfla So many people want to blame the band for not losing weight - it's not the bands fault it's only a piece of plastic - too bad they can't band our brains cuz thats where the problem lies... We think we are going to just die if we can't have Cookies candies mcdonalds etc. You aren't going to die without these things in your life - you are going to live with out them - eating all that junk was just killing you - ya might have given you some emotional comfort for a moment - but then that turns to guilt - and then you just give up and keep on eating.. I didn't have any holiday treats until I baked xmas cookies w/my grandaughters - i allowed myself 5 cookies - but then i added more exercise to my schedule - I would walk an extra day - and increased my mileage - if I allow myself a treat then I add more exercise.. You will live without eating all those high fat high carb meals and once you get to the right mindset to eat healthy - thats what you will crave. I follow a WW food plan - I get my carbs, meats, veggies and yes sweets (sf pudding & fudgecicles & yogurts) I eat a well balanced menu and I love having the power over the food not the other way around. I am an old fat lady - I know all the excuses as to why we can't do this or that - ya i know it's all b.s. - we can do anything that we put our mind too. Healthy New Years....
  22. My surgeon gave me a list of things that I can and cannot eat throughout the whole six weeks. I'm surprised your sugeron didn't give you a list.

    Hunger question?

Well, I can't lie, I am glad my doctor told me full liquids at day 2 for two weeks, I just looked over my plan again and This is my doctors regimen: Clear liquids 1-2 days after surgery, Full Liquids when you go home for 2 weeks, Start pureed Foods for 1 - 2 weeks, Soft Foods lowfat, low sugar for one week, regular foods Weeks 5 - 6. Yesterday was day three and I was having Protein Shakes, Water, Lipton cup of Soup cream of chicken, chicken broth and diluted juice all day and I was ok. This morning I woke up hungry (day 4) and decided to read over my plan again. For Full liquids they allow pudding and tapioca (sugar free non fat),Cream of wheat, cream of rice, farina or grits, cream soup, custard and yogurt. Non fat and sugar free where applicable. At this stage I missed that I needed to boost my Protein and give you ways to do that like adding powdered milk to skim milk or adding Protein Powder to yogurt. Right now I am having a cup of tea with soy milk and sipping it by the tablespoon. When I first started sipping you know how your hunger pains get worse when you start eating? Yeah that hurts, it is starting to subside now, but I am feeling pretty hungry. I'm going to take it slow and make some cream of wheat. I have figured out what 'dumping' is and that is the funny pain I have been feeling in my gut. I wasn't diluting my fruit juice enough and when the sugar hits your intestines so fast you get a cramp. It didn't take long to figure out that sugar is not my friend. So I have highly diluted it and added a packet of sweetner, you still get some flavor that way. More like two parts water to one part juice, maybe three parts water. I feel for you, having to do Optifast before has got to be really hard. My doctor does not require that, they just tell you not to gorge yourself the day before (last meal sort of thing.) You will definitely not be hungry the day of your surgery and maybe a little on day 2, but the clear liquids will alleviate it. After that, ask them if you can do what my doctor recommends. Also viactive soft chews Calcium and Vitamins are tolerated very well, so that was my treat yesterday, chewing slowly one of each. Also, I had some acid reflux and tums are allowed which took care of that. Your day is coming up soon, I know why they do the optifast, but I bet you could replace some of those calories with a low fat yogurt once a day. Anyone else think that might be ok?

    Hunger question?

I have heard of a drink called iso pure? supposed to have 40 grams to a container. Haven't tried it yet. I started wtih soy milk before surgery to see how I liked it and also wanted to avoid the lactic acid (milk sugar) after surgery. But not really any reason why, and it lasts longer in the fridge because my son won't drink it. Today I went to Walmart and found an unflavored protein powder which uses a smaller scoop. I made my lunch with a packet of cream of chicken cup of soup with hot water, then added a tablespoon of instant mashed potatoes and microwaved another 30 seconds, then added one scoop of the protein powder. Couldn't even tell it was in there, it added 10 grams of protein to an otherwise proteinless cup of soup. Then I had 4 ounces of protein shake. I am feeling full. For my breakfast earlier, I couldn't finish the cream of wheat, went out to walmart then finished it when I came back. It definitely filled my hunger and so did that lunch. I might just have a yogurt for dinner then my two viactives for dessert. I can make the yogurt high protein by adding protein powder to that Yum! The minimum amount of protein they want us to take in is 40 grams with a goal of 60 grams per day. From now on it's going to be protein, protein protein. But I wasn't this vigilent when I had the band and became protein deficient. My hair got really thin. Luckily it's all growing back in the eight months I've been without. I can't let that happen again. The surgeon who did my original band was not as involved with his patients as my new doctor and didn't send us home with much nutritional information. My new doctor prepares a notebook on your nutrition and a notebook for your after care when you are realeased. A completely different experience this time around.
