How much are you really eating????
Jachut replied to Seattlelight's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'd probably eat a lot compared to many bandsters, and now I'm maintaining I'm definitely up there towards 1800 calories a day. I really believe you have to eat to lose weight and that dropping calories so low will only result in you never being able to eat much ever again as your body will adapt to it. Breakfast for me is usually a half cup serving of some sort of Cereal (muesli, oatmeal) with fresh fruit and yogurt. Snacks are things like fruit, a few crackers, a small handful of nuts, a muesli bar - and I usually have one mid morning but not always mid afternoon. lunch might be dinner leftovers, a half a sandwich and some fruit, it might be sushi if I'm out, and sometimes it MIGHT even be something really naughty like a muffin and a cappucino. And yes, I did this whilst losing too. I often dont want an afternoon snack becuase when I've eaten solidly and healthily during the morning, I just dont need any more food. Dinner tends to be my smallest least calorific meal - a small piece of lean Protein about 2/3 the size of my palm and some vegies. Usually with a glass of wine. Sizewise, my meals usually end up at more than half a cup, that never would have satisifed me, but a cup would be a lot, its somewhere in the middle. When I really LISTEN to my band, I eat small serves often. -
Why am I so darn hungry all the time?:help: I am 3 weeks post op and I am starving! I have progressed throuugh the liquid stages just fine an am eating normal food- just not as much, but it seems like I am hungry every hour or two. SO I eat a bannana, then a yogurt.. but I am still starving! I am wondering why this is and if I will ever not feel hungry. Does anyone have any words of wisdom?

First Day Of Liquid Diet Before Surgery
cdwalters65 commented on cdwalters65's blog entry in cdwalters65's Blog
I have to do the 3 protein shakes a day, I can have sugar free jello, pudding , Icecream, gatoraideYogurt for breakfast and all the unsweet tea and cyrstal lite. Today, I mixed a yogurt with a shake to add substance, since I could have one after it. I have to do this till sugery on the 15th. -
So I lost 2 lbs in 1 day on the liquid diet. I think it was mostly fluid . . . seeing as how that's all I'm taking in (LOL). Wasn't too bad yesterday, and this morning I've had coffee with ff creamer. Will eat some oatmeal soon. That's the strange thing on this pre-surgery liquid diet . . . I'm allowed oatmeal, cream of wheat, cottage cheese and yogurt too. The Post-surgery liquid diet (which I'll do for the day 4-8), doesn't allow for the oatmeal, etc. Today I have a ton of errands to run and I'm a little worried that I will get too hungry along the way. I plan on taking a protein shake with me, but frankly I have a hard time drinking them unless they're super cold, so I guess I'll have to find one of the small coolers and take it with me. I have my sleep study tonight, and I've been warned that it will be unpleasant. Apparently they put a lot of goop in your hair. In the morning, after the study, I get my pre-op bloodwork done. These are the last 2 things that I need to do prior to my surgery. I'm still looking forward to getting the surgery done and over with, and moving forward to new things!

Why am I so darn hungry all the time?
queenmommy replied to Meltini's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I totally agree. My surgery was 3 weeks ago and I am very hungry...usually during the late afternoon/evening. I am definitely craving protein...but my doctor has me on soft foods still. I am doing the mix of soft with full liquid...no meat. I do egg beaters; boca burgers; soup; pudding; yogurt; oatmeal...etc. I can say honestly sitting here at the computer at 10pm at night I am freaking hungry! UGH! I just put down two bottles of water and will be up all night going to the bathroom. I have dropped 20 lbs since my surgery on May 11th...but it is coming off slower now. My fill will not be until around June 21st. -
What is your doctor's post op diet progression? I was not allowed solids until week 5. Cherrios are really empty calories, no Protein (milk does have some). I have Greek yogurt with fruit for breakfast with the following add ins: unflavored benefiber, 1/2 scoop vanilla whey isolate, 1/3 cup Kashi Go lean (high protein), and some walnuts. Not sure on calories but maybe between 300-350, but close to 30 g or protein. My doctor says 3 oz of protein so I would have 2 oz of tuna with the 1 oz of laughing cow. Looks like you have having most of your protein in one meal. Try spreading it out over your day.

yogurt is a slider food it's basically liquid goes through just like Water which is why you should measure it out Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

You are not yet fully healed and therefore shouldn't rely on feelings of fullness. Also you won't really feel your restriction until you take in dense protein like chicken. Yogurt actually counted as a liquid on my plan so it definitely won't give you the same feeling as if you had eaten dense protein. As Kristen said, right now you really need to measure your portions and stick with it and accept that the goal isn't to eat until you feel full or stuffed.

I was sleeved on 9/28, and have had an absolute textbook recovery; walking over a mile five days after surgery, doing laundry, getting in all my Water & Protein, and back to work a week after surgery. My question is this: now that I am on puréed food, I thought I would recognize the "full" feeling. I ate a 5.3 oz. cup of oikos yogurt for lunch. Since my dietician said my stomach would initially hold 2ounces, shouldn't I feel stuffed? I feel like I'm satisfied, but not full like I overate. Does the puréed food pass through very quickly like the liquids? Will I not feel truly full until I am on regular food? Doing great, but feeling a little confused. Severe acid reflux/heartburn, 5 months out..help!
SarahRN482 replied to SarahRN482's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So here's my update! I called my surgeon's office this morning and spoke with his nurse prior to my IR appointment. I told her again my symptoms and how I really do not feel my reflux is due to the band being too tight. I told her the only time I have issues is when I eat (literally as soon as I swallow a first bite, the pain is there). I told her that I think I may have gastritis (I'm an RN, so she knows I kinda know what I'm talking about even though I work with heart patient's and not GI stuff lol). I asked her to please talk with the doc before I went into the hospital to get registered and dropped $650 to get Fluid taken out of my band and then that not be the issue. She said she didn't blame me for wanting to try the least invasive treatment first, so that's what we did. I'm currently on carafate 4 times a day, and even after one dose I've had so far today, I can tell a HUGE improvement. Tonight, I had another thought though, while I was TMI!!! on the toilet. I have had MAJOR constipation issues. I have tried everything possible to help, from Miralax to Colace to Sennakot to Fleets enemas and suppositories. I've even started eating chia seeds in the mornings in my yogurt because I've heard that helps. I drink at least 64oz of Water per day, most days closer to 100oz, so know it's not a hydration issue. Before my surgery, I could drink 2 cups of coffee and poop every morning like clockwork. Not so much now! After I had a BM tonight, I felt SO much better. I almost wonder if the constipation isn't exacerbating the reflux? -
I regreted my surgery for the first 4 weeks. Hang in there, I promise it gets better. I was required to stay on 3 Protein drinks and 2 yogurts a day for the first 4 weeks. I stoppped losing weight because I couldn't force down half of that and was in starvation mode. The thought of eating made me want to barf. I am now using EAS CarbControl drinks. They have 17 grams of protein. I drink about 2 a day. It takes me over an hour to drink one but I force myself to. I am also chewing two gummie adult multi vitimens a day. Can use switch to gummies? They might be easier on the stomach. What type of diet does the dr having you doing?

I have three fourths cup cereal and one half cup of milk. That does not make my bowl very liquidy. Although I don't drink while I eat, I don't always eat solid food. I eat a lot of yogurt which most people don't use because it is not a solid. So I figured the cereal and milk is no different. I am not hungry at all during the day no matter what I eat.

Walking Girl's VSG Story :)
walkinggirl replied to walkinggirl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Just checking in! I am now 8 days post op. And guess what? The scale still hasn't moved since I got home from the hospital 6 days ago. Good grief, someone take this scale away from me! Surely it has to move some time! I am following the diet to a T, so it has to happen eventually. Keeping the faith Other than that, my stomach rumbles and grumbles are continuing. I *think* I have concluded that it isn't really hunger pains -- that it is a spasm of some sort. It seems to happen more when I am eating something a little thicker like yogurt vs. a liquid. That's all for now. Feeling really good and stomach soreness is all but gone, which is a huge help. -
Hello Everyone: I was banded on 11/8/10 and so far I have lost 32 pounds. I had no restriction, but I still watched my portions and was very careful with what I ate. I saw my Dr. on Wed. this week for my first fill and I was under the impression that I would probably receive 1/2 cc to 1cc of saline. However...he placed in 4cc., which I was surprised. I was able to drink water fine, continued on liquids for 24 hours and then proceeded to mushy foods. I ate a little egg drop soup with little star pasta in it. I barely got in a few bites and felt tremendous pain...pressure in the middle of my chest....had to let it come back up! Since then, I have only been able to eat a little yogurt, pudding, plus protein shakes. Did I try to eat too much, too quickly? I am feeling definite restriction, ....will it go down some or do I have too much fill for the first time? Will some of you share with me your experiences...please....just trying to walk this thing out in the right way. Thanks!

Had my surgery on 8-30-07 in Mexico
Liz1531 replied to Kim Lucchesi's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have moved on from Phase I and have added creamy soups, liquid yogurt, and protein shakes. I felt to unhealthy to do all clear liquids. I am still breastfeeding my son and have notice a HUGE decrease in milk supply so I decided today that I must add on the protein shakes. My doc said okay to add the yogurt and soups on day 4 if I was doing really well on all clears. They said not to start my Atkins shakes (protein shakes) until day 7. I am going against there advice because I really feel this is what's best for my son right now. -
I definitely agree with you about the liquid diet. I am on day 6 of 14! My doc has set this schedule up for me: Week 1 & 2: Clear liquids only- tea, sugar free Jello, broth, juice Week 3: true liquid diet - Protein shakes, fat free puddings, yogurts, cream -based Soups (strained!) Week 4 & 5: puree foods Week 6: Begin eating real food - trial and error - rule of thumb - stopand sip! I am so looking forward to being through these first 2 weeks. I just drink lots and lots of what I can. I haven't been getting light headed or anything yet. Good luck!

Question about hunger after being sleeved
juzmejnee posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on June 23rd. And eat about 3-4oz each meal. I have like half a yogurt for snack, or a hard boiled egg. I track everything i eat at myfitnesspal.com and seem to be under 700 calories everyday, and my carbs remail pretty low. My question is, i still seem to be hungy. I am on a PPI, and take it everyday. I read that the ghrelin hormone takes a few weeks / months to be out of your system. So im wondering will i have less hunger as i go along? Im afraid that if i still have this hunger, and our tummys stretch over time, i will eventually gain weight. Anyone ever go through this, and stopped feeling hungry at like 6 months post op or something ( please say yes!) thank you -
Menu - Bfast - yogurt/granola Lunch - chicken salad Dinner - Exericse - 10:00 am - 15 min on elliptical 3:00 - 15 min on elliptical Evening - upper body workout Wt 181.7 NOtes - did not make it to the gym last night like I had planned, too much going on. Today is another hectic day, we have our meeting tonight, work today is full of stuff, I have 2 big conference calls, a meeting at 3:30 today that I have to speak at, and then tomorrow we have our big wigs coming into the office, I'm so stressed! I need a day off to do absolutely nothing!

9 days post op. To avoid a bad decision I made an even worse decision. Long time LAP-BANDERS a little advice?
terrydumont46 replied to HJ Harley's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
you had dry chicken. you will find that leftovers aren't usually tolerated well. in your situation I would have added some broth to that chicken and than blended. my suggestion is to drink some Water. you sound like you are getting dehydrated. you should be drinking 2 quarts at minimum a day. and never go without eating. at your stage Soup, Protein drinks, mushed up protein of any kind. I use a emulsefer. and with every fill you will need to go through the liquid and mushy stages over and over again and you need to figure out how to eat. i'm guessing that your band is not filled right now. so mushy food should be able to slip right through. eggs, pureed vegetables, cottage cheese, yogurt, or whatever you like you just need to put some broth in it and blend it until it is soft. but for now drink some liquids and see if that helps. your pouch will digest just like your big stomach since it is just your stomach pulled up to be a pouch. I wish you luck. but please see to your diet. -
Sugar free pudding. Scrambled eggs. Cottage cheese...I added a tiny bit of fruit baby food ..which is watered down. Cream of wheat with unflavored protein powder. I added the protein powder to most of my soups too. You can also add a bos of sugar free pudding to 32 oz of plain yogurt. Tastes a little like cheesecake. I would wait another week or two for that, though.

Stage IV Diet aka Real Food
Rebecca Jo Ragon replied to KDM74's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am almost 4 months out and can tolerate most everything that is okay to eat at this stage. Per my drs. instructions, I cannot add Pasta, rice, bread, potatoes, etc. until 6 months. I can do coconut and apples. I have a fav snack with greek yogurt, apples, unsweetened coconut, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds and pistachios. Granted, I am only eating 1/4 of an apple with each serving. The very first time I tried it, I had some issues. However, I waited a couple weeks and tried it again and didn't have any problems. I now eat that a couple times a week. I have also had pineapple, kiwi, all sorts of berries, watermelon, cantaloupe, and grapes. Because I focus on Protein, anytime I have something like that it is in very small quantities. I have not had any issues. I think the most important thing to realize is that everyone is different. What might cause an issue for me may be something that you don't have any problems with at all. Just test things in small quantities and see what happens. If you do have an issue with something, then wait a couple weeks and try it again. Good luck! -
I was sleeved on October 3rd. I was restricted to liquids for 1 week. Beginning 2nd week, I could begin soft foods like yogurt, eggs, fish, soft vegetables. 3rd week my diet opened up quite a bit more and now I am on an unrestricted diet. I have had zero issues with Fluid (I probably get in two to three times what I am required to drink daily). Now back to your original question, I recommend to try Dannon Light & Fit Greek Yogurt (has the least amount of sugar and good Protein content) and mix a scoop of unflavored protein in with it. I really like the All Max brand due to it being one of the most pure Proteins on the market with no "fillers". As suggested by another poster, broth with a scoop of protein works great too...add a couple spoonfuls of unflavored Greek yogurt to give it a cream like texture/taste. My doc said that some people, for whatever reason, have trouble drinking Water and indicated that patients indicate that it "feels to heavy". I haven't experienced this, but he did say that to try alkaline based waters like Smart Water etc to find one that works...I drink a ton of Powerade zero and decaffeinated tea. I would certainly try the Powerade zero and see if that helps with getting liquids in. Hope some of this helps Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Thanks so much for all the great ideas! I had never seen baked eggs before. I love my eggs over easy, but w/no toast, potatoes, or rice to soak of the yolk, I didn't see how I'd make them work for me. Baking the eggs on a bed of spinach is a great idea. Also, I had forgotten that I can eat turkey bacon and really any of the b-fast meats that are made out of turkey, chicken, or soy. And, a crab omelette, rocotta, greek yogurt, etc... Mmmmmmmmmm!!! Thanks again!

It's definitely not an easy thing, and it's a lot easier to let life get in the way. I'm lucky because my husband will usually do it with me, so having that support makes it easier. But I can totally understand having a hard time figuring out how to do it with a fill. I just started mushy foods today and I really want to stay low carb, but I'm having such a hard time figuring what that actually is. All I think of is yogurt and cream of wheat, cream Soups and oatmeal. But today I settled for cottage cheese and I mashed up some avocado and fresh crab. So far so good. I think once I'm used to life with my band I will try it again. Good luck when you try again. I think the most important thing is to plan for it. I love the recipes on NomNomPaleo. Everything I have tried on there has been awesome. So try to plan your whole 30 days of meals. Read the forums on the whole30 website, spend some time before you start cooking your food for the week. That makes it so much easier. It's also ok to eat out, you can go to chipotle and have a salad with the pork carnitas, salsa and guacamole. Just some ideas.

Oh, and another thing I thought of..even though you said you don't snack per say. I would suggest you eat a lite snack between meals and make them healthy such as a fresh fruit, hard boiled egg (white), yogurt, or string cheese. This can help with adding on to your caloric intake as well
