    Weight loss journey.

Figuring out how to eat. I am vegetarian, allergic to seafood, red dyes, artificial sugars & stevia and pretty much any highly processed food. I didn't really have a long wait and I didn't have a pre-op diet.
  3. I've been vegetarian for nearly 20 years and still managed to become morbidly obese.
  4. I am very close to you. I'm in Germantown. I'm also vegetarian. Send me a PM if you have questions.

    Daily diet

It's more of a challenge pre-op. You still have a full sized stomach. A typical day for me is a Protein shake for breakfastt with 1 scoop of Protein powder, ¼ - ½ a cup of FAGE 0% greek yogurt and what ever flavoring I like. Sometimes that's a tbsp of almond butter, today it was a tbsp of shredded coconut. I'm vegetarian. lunch may be a veggie burger, or a small salad with black Beans and hardboiled egg with salsa or vinegar /oil for dressing. snack is an ounce of nuts dinner is 1 cup of either lentil or vegetable Soup. Depending on my protein count at that point I may add a scoop of unflavored protein powder and a dash of sriracha sauce. In between I'm drinking Water. I'm one of the few people who get full on water. Pre-op the easiest thing to do would be to try for clean Proteins and veg. Cut out sodas and as much processed and fast foods as possible.

    Daily diet

Just saw @@VSGAnn2014's response. Here's an example of how programs vary: I had no pre-op diet. My food phases were: Full Liquids:1 - 2 weeks: Basically anything liquid no thicker than a milk shake. Purees: 3 - 4 weeks: Food the consistency of baby food Soft Foods: 5 - 6 weeks: Soft foods like scrambled eggs, mushy fruits, etc.... Anything as tolerated week 7 - on I was on 400 - 600 calories a day until 3 mths out then no more than 850 calories from 3 - 9 mths. I currently eat no more than 1,000 calories a day. I have lost 109lbs. I rarely eat any bread or highly processed food. I am vegetarian and eat a plant based diet. I also don't eat artificial sweeteners or diet foods. I work out 4 -6 days a week. To the best of my knowledge I have never experienced a stall.
  7. I was a vegetarian for a long time (10+ years) and ate myself to well over 350 lbs, so that surely wasn't my real solution. Are there people with complications and regrets after surgery? Sure, but I'm going to bet that percentage-wise, there are a lot more people who are morbidly obese with complications and sad emotions related to their obesity than there are people who are post-VSG with complications and regrets. When I was in your situation, I was a lot more worried about where I'd be in 15-20 years without surgery (likely dead) than in 15-20 years after surgery. The vast majority of people who have this surgery have no complications. I was one of that group. I never had even a twinge of regret, not even upon waking up from surgery or during the first days of recovery. This was easily the best decision I have ever made for myself.
  8. I just got called yesterday with my official approval - and surgery date for December. I'm completely confused. I'm at 39 Bmi and 34 years old. I just have this nagging fear about regrets in the long term. I'm scared of not losing much weight -- of not keeping it off... I'm part of a church tradition that advocates a vegetarian or vegan diet. I've never done it. But I know that there's lots of research indicating that plant based diets are the most healthy -- disease fighting even. I'm afraid of ending up not getting healthy through this surgery and then finding that the plant based diet thing was my real solution. I'd hate that regret. I'm worried about where I'll be in 15 or 20 years. I'm scared of complications or regrets. I'm scared the research will turn and that this decision will eventually come to be known as a foolish one. My wife is super supportive and is crystal clear that I should go through with it. I'm fully conflicted. Did anyone have these kinds of mixed emotions? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    My Fitness Pal

Milaxx - I'm vegetarian so I don't know it my foods would interest you.
  10. I didn't have a pre-op diet and I didn't do only liquids until the day before which was required by surgery. I also did not have a post-op clear liquid phase. I went straight to full liquids. What I did do was work my butt off. I log my food, drink my Water, keep my Protein up and work out. I had a large weight loss the first 2 weeks (26lbs), but that was to be expected because I started at such a high BMI. At my 6 week f/u I loss another 6lbs. That when I knew I needed to knuckle down and work. Since then I've averaged 8 -10 lbs monthly and I'm absolutely fine with that. A year out and I have lost a little over 100lbs since day of surgery. It's not coming off lightening fast, but I have nearly no sagging skin and feel great. I a also vegetarian and therefore my carbs run higher than most. I make sure they are complex carbs and not from things like breads and highly processed food. I also stay active enough to burn those carbs off. I am also post menopausal and take medication that slows my metabolism. I am living proof this tool works if you work it. To the OP, I repeat, step away from the scale. Focus on good eating, getting in your fluids and moving.

    Craving protein shakes

Vegetarian here. Dark green leafy veg also contain Protein, so go for those. If you want a break from meat, try topping with a hard boiled egg and some black Beans. I also use salsa instead of salad dressing. Very low cal and fat free.

    Craving protein shakes

@@MrsKarenC2008 That's definitely the way to do it...protein first, then veggies, then if you really really must, a healthy whole grain carb. I think at this point the rules on veggies are relaxed save for those foods that have really tiny seeds that can get stuck in any residual healing lines. The big leafy vegetables should be fine for us now. And honestly, I have been feeling pretty gross the last few weeks being able to have my Protein but not being able to have anything green. Also, maybe your surgeon has a different opinion, but I don't see the problem with getting your protein from the shakes, and your fullness sensation from some raw veggies. Hopefully they don't make you nauseated. After all, there are vegetarians out there, and they need their protein from somewhere too, so it has to be fairly common.

    Hormones in meat

I've been slowly transitioning to a more plant based diet the past few months. I am almost a year out from surgery and have sustained goal weight since June. There are a variety of reasons that have persuaded me to drastically reduce my meat consumption. I've read many articles lately about the hormones in meat negatively effecting the human body. The hormone residues in food can increase the risk of breast cancer and other reproductive system cancers among women and may promote development of prostate cancer in men. It's estimated that two-thirds of the cattle raised in the U.S. are given hormones (usually testosterone or estrogens) to boost growth. This concerns me since I've eaten more meat in the past year than I have in the three years prior combined. Many experts say that you should only eat meat if you know where it came from and how the animals were raised. Can you imagine sitting in a nice restaurant and asking the waiter if he can tell you about the farm the chicken was raised on and how it was treated? Does anyone else worry about this? I'm not going 100% vegetarian, but I've drastically reduced my meat consumption. I'm actually eating venison for dinner tonight since I know its a safe choice. Do Hormones in the Food Supply Affect the Human Body? http://healthyeating.sfgate.com/hormones-food-supply-affect-human-body-2194.html Hormones In Food: Should You Worry? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/31/hormones-in-food-should-y_n_815385.html
  14. I completely agree with @jess9395. There is more than one way to "skin a cat". Your food plan should be catered to you individual makeup and lifestyle. I know some people who can eat soft boiled eggs on day 3. Why not? It's Protein and healthy fat. I am a vegetarian with severe food allergies. My eating plan is very different than most of the folks on these forums. Because my diet is plant based my carb intake is higher than most. Guess what? I have been able to lose steadily with no problems. In short cookie cutter treatments don't work because we are individuals, not clones. You should be having ongoing conversations with the medical team you chose to care for your unique needs.

    Beans, etc.

But they are complex carbs, they aren't going to sit and turn to glucose. I'm vegetarian, most of my Protein comes from beans, it hasn't adversely effected my weight loss in the least.True, but pure protein first. Just quoting the rationale of the NUT Beans are protein. Protein with carbs though. For example a c of kidney beans has 13g protein but 37g carbs. Though I suppose you could subtract the 11g fiber for 26g net carbs. Not arguing the fact that they are VERY nutritionally advantageous, just saying why a nutritionist might prefer grilled chicken for a non vegetarian client (22g protein and 1g carbs for 4 oz)

  19. I've been Vegetarian for 6 years now and eat eggs and cheese too. On very rare occasions I will have a little seafood, but it is maybe once or twice a year. There are so many fabulous vegetarian recipes out there and great replacement foods that you will really enjoy! I love love love spicy black bean burgers, Bocca chicken patties, and Morning Star Breakfast sausage. For Protein, I try to get in 60-90 grams each day. I start my day with a scoop of GENEPRO protein powder in my coffee which is 30 so that's a big head start... then here's other vegetarian protein sources: Protein powders/shakes Soy products Mozzarella Cheese Cottage Cheese Eggs Greek Yogurt Milk, Soy Milk, Almond Milk Nuts Beans Lentils Edamame Oats Barley Artichokes Asparagus Broccoli Peas Brussel Sprouts Kale Corn ..and smaller amounts in bell peppers, carrots, green beans, cauliflower, mushrooms, and sweet potatoes. Thank you for considering the lives of our animal friends... not food. ***Also When I first start eating veggie I literally just didn't know what to make, so I thought it might help to know what a typical day looks like... so here's what I ate today: Coffee w/Genepro Breakfast: Hardboiled egg, Morningstar sausage patty (pre-cooked and ate in the car on the way to work) Lunch: Leftover vegetarian chili Snack: Cottage cheese and carrot sticks Snack: Almonds Dinner: I'm making Black bean tostada...(Just like regular ones, except I use black beans cooked with taco seasoning as the base) I also have a sugar free vanilla pudding in the fridge for later

I am so so so angry

I think your husband may have expressed himself incorrectly, but yeah that was too much. I'm a vegetarian. I eat veggie burgers all the time. At 3½ weeks, I might have been able to eat half of a burger. Most people at your stage are eating between 2 - 4 ounces of food at a time.
  21. I'm vegetarian so that probably plays a part but I have never been constipated. My doc had us on stool softners from day 1 post op. If you think the extra Iron is the culprit, make sure to increase your Water. I would also try adding something like psyllium powder daily in addition to regular doses of prunes or prune juice. If you are eating an otherwise balanced diet, the added carbs/sugar are not going to hurt. My carbs fluctuate between 50 - 70 a day and I've been losing regularly.

    Salad

I ate raw veg from day 1. I added spinach to my protein shakes. Actual salad and veg I started reintroducing around 6 weeks. I'm a vegetarian so my body may be more accustomed to raw veg.

    Wayyyyyyyyy too many clothes!

I call where I am right now round 2-3 of this year. The room that I took the pictures in was a bedroom, then made into my walk-in closet and is back to a spare room. The walls were lined with double clothing racks and where the mirror is, used to be floor to ceiling 6foot wide shoe shelves. The mesh crates are the remnants of it. Today a college friend moved in while she is finishing her last semester. She brought with her less than I take for an long weekend. I think she will be very good for me, as she eats clean, is pretty much a vegetarian and a minimalist. I KNOW I don't need all the stuff I have, it's finally sinking in that I'm winning this body back, pound by pound. And it is okay to let things go. It really is a new me in the mirror, inside and out!

It’s About Time We Eat Real Food

I still use Protein shakes. For several months now I've been using Garden of Life. Its a vegan raw organic high Protein powder with lots of amino acids. Here's a product review that I wrote about it, if you're interested. I think it is far superior to whey-based protein powders: http://www.healthcentral.com/obesity/c/276918/177450/protein-vegetarians-vegans (links to HealthCentral)
  25. I was sleeved August 5. Transitioned to "regular" foods yesterday. I'm a little nervous about introducing fruits and veggies, but really want to try (I miss them!) Especially salad! I'm going slow, reintroducing one "new" food at a time. Okay, what follows is TMI, so skip it if you're squeamish! Yesterday, I had my first bad digestive experience since the first week after surgery (I had a lot of nausea and constipation for the first 6 days, then nausea and diarrhea for a few days after that. Since then, I have stabilized.) Anyway, yesterday I ate some peanuts, which I chewed really, really well. A couple of hours later I had urgent diarrhea. Thank goodness I was at home! So, no more nuts for a while. (I LOVE nuts, and for a vegetarian like me they've been a great source of Protein over the years. Waahhhh!) I also have a weird pain right under my left ribs -- much higher up and several inches to the left of my biggest incision -- It feels like I'm bruised inside, and this didn't start until 3 weeks in. Anybody else have this?
