  2. Hey Kanina! I am currently seeing Dr. De la Torre at UAB. He is the chief of Plastics. He is very nice and knowledgable. The staff is marvelous! They are very accessible and sweet! Appointments seem to be pretty fast too. His number is (205) 934-2307 and his office is in the Kirklin Clinic. Hopefully I am on the last leg of my panniculectomy. I was denied and then we appealed then they asked for more pictures and records. All of that was submitted this morning, so keep your fingers crossed!! Hope all is well with you!! Shawna

    calorie intake

My doc RECOMMENDS 1000 cal/day. Of that, 65 grams should be protein and no more than 100 grams should be carbs. I sometimes creep up to near 1200 but I haven't gone over that yet. Truthfully, I haven't been able to. I have extreme restriction without any fill. :frown: While I was on liquids, I got hungry real easy. My doc told me to eat more frequently. He said a 200 cal protein liquid five times/day. I found that if I waited to drink my water until I was near my next "meal" I didn't get hungry as fast.

Do you still vomit a year after surgery

Sounds like you're eating too fast. Room temperature to warm foods would clearly be ideal as well.
  7. What form of intermittent fasting were you doing? 16/8? 18/6? OMAD? I did intermittent fasting (16/8) before surgery and I lost about 70 pounds in 5 months. It really helped me to get out of the habit of snacking. The psychologist who did my psych eval for surgery didn't like it, but nobody else (the surgeon, bariatric nutritionist, PCP, endocrinologist) had a problem with it. Can't do it post-op, though (at least initially) because I'd never be able to get all my protein. Anyway, my suggestion is to think of it as doing mini-fasts. If you were doing 16/8 and skipping breakfast, maybe you can change to 12/12 (have breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but fast for 12 hours between dinner and the next day's breakfast). Have a small breakfast and fast between breakfast and lunch.
  8. Regarding the chewing, I was on 2 weeks of liquid pre-op and 3 weeks of liquid post op. I've never been a real fast eater but during that 5 weeks I lost any speed at all. When you are drinking things that are not all that appealing, it becomes a very slow process to get it down. And obviously, there's no chewing at all during those 5 weeks. I think that works well in teaching the person. At the point I was going through it, it was lost on me but now I see it. And regarding the making a meal last 30 minutes, we do not do that. For instance, I am able to only eat about 80% of a single egg scrambled. Scramble one and see what that quantity looks like. As long as we put 1 minute between bites, we do not have to force the meal to take 30 minutes. I bought a little egg timer and I sit with it on the table and turn it over as I take my bites. It takes me 20 to 23 minutes to eat that portion of a scrambled egg. Ask if you need to make a meal to last 30 minutes or if it's about how long you wait between bites. If you are very small portions like I am, there's no reason to drag it out any longer than you have to. And in the beginning almost everyone is very small portions. For the most part I've been very lucky. Things have fallen into place so easy for me I can't even believe it. I wish I were losing weight faster but I think a part of the reason I'm emotionally able to cope with that is because the overall process hasn't been that difficult. I miss my caffeine because I am so tired but I'll get that back soon. And way more than food, I miss being able to take Advil. But the thing I miss most, I just can't have so I have to get over it. I smoked for many years and gave it up when I bought my first home as I was very low on cash. I think about this in much the same way. There were some rough spots, but now I look back and I'm really glad I had the good sense to just do it. I can't even imagine myself as a smoker now and I smoked close to 20 years. I hope some day I can't even imagine myself as ever having been fat. (At least with my clothes on..pretty sure the skin will be a reminder otherwise.)

    Carbs?

I try to keep my carbs under 30 grams, but some days, like iegal, I do go over -- not frequently, but on occasion. I don't know if I could go lower than 30 because I think that getting in fruits and veggies is important (for example, a granny smith apple is 22 grams alone!) -- but that said, I've lost pretty consistently because I think I keep my carbs low. Like iegal, I am carb sensitive and I'm still in my losing phase, so if I were to increase my carbs, I don't think I'd lose as fast . . .

  11. My Surgery is Friday March 20, 2009. I am on the pre-op diet for my second week now. They have me on meal replacement drinks for breakfast and lunch then a small high protein, veg. dinner. I have tried my best to stay on track but have broken the rules some. I had some peanuts as snacks on few days and 1 scrambled egg with little cheese one morning. Three of the days I had a small lunch instead of my normal slim fast bar. I find myself worried about swaying from the diet. I am hoping others also have done that. Any input would help.

    I got my Date!!

Congratulations , I very excited for you. I was banded on April 1st and my process was a lot easier than some I have read about on the forum. I visited a True Results Center in Atlanta on February 6, 2008 for a Free Diagnostic. After my Psych Eval, Nutrition Consultation, and blood work my package was sent to the Insurance Company BCBS of Georgia. I was approved on March 15, 2008 and my surgery was scheduled for April 1st. Every thing really seemed to go very fast so enjoy this pre-surgery time. Because the post op diet of liquids only is no fun!!!!
  14. KATIE!! CONGRATS!!! Now - TAKE A DEEP BREATH... 1. It sounds like all of your ducks are in a row - the only ??? is your weight. 2. Instead of stressing about whether or not you've gained, start TODAY with some healthy eating. You KNOW you're NOT saying goodbye to anything forever, so you don't need to do the last supper thing this week and a half. 3. I know all of this is a huge surprise now that all is approved and happening so fast - BUT - you have waited TWO YEARS for this!! YOU ARE READY!!! Breathe, breathe, breathe... You are SO ready. You are going to do great. Your dream is coming true - embrace it! And Kathy is right on the money - have a friend whisk you off to a hotel for overnight. ((hugs))

    Scared!

You will lose weight hon, just maybe not as huge as some people's numbers - only because you don't have as much. But this tool will work for you as long as you follow the guidelines. I ditto harmonykalb's comments - chew chew chew your food and EAT SLOWLY. I've thrown up twice from eating too fast, unfortunately It's soooo easy to slip back into bad habits like eating fast. I'd also say follow what your dr. says (i.e. progression through the food phases). And be kind to yourself through this journey! Best of luck!
  16. My Surgeon said he'd have me ready in 8 weeks..well l'm at 12 weeks now, still waiting for my insurance company to say OK..appartently they are usually the biggest hold up...no reason for them to move fast l guess:redface:

    coffee....

I really used the first 3 months to lose weight and to forget my cravings. Coffee was a biggie for me--but I waited for 90 days to drink coffee. Now I drink 1-cup [usually only part of 1-cup/day]. I know a doctor who has the sleeve who is a coffee lover. DITTO on the 90 days minimum for him since you need to give your stomach some time to heal. He deals with some acid reflux and said he would NOT have that at all if he did not drink coffee, but that is a trade off he is willing to make because he loves coffee. Now if the Acid Reflux got bad enough he would go off coffee. PS for me more that 1-small cup of coffee makes my insulin go nutzo and I want FOOD--like a donut. THAT is NOT a trade off that I am willing to make, so I have tested how much satisfies my craving without pushing me into a "problem". ALL foods should be tested 1 at a time. For example I ate some raw coconut straight out of the coconut [high in protein], but it was too soon, I ate too much, too fast and wow did that HURT. I am 57, I lost 45 lbs + 45 inches in 45 days. The first 90 days for me was about WEIGHT LOSS using my Isopure shakes [50 grms of protein] and zero carb drink [40 grams of protein]. Add it up--90 grams of Protein / day and WOW o WOW you will lose weight FAST. I have slowed down now at 4 months, but I am down 55 lbs total. Think more about your goal and less about cravings at this point in the game.
  18. Today both my husband and I saw our family physician to see if he would fill out the paperwork for the banding Drs, and out health insurance for the preauthorization. He didn't even hesitate he said yes! He already has some patients that have been banded, he was quite informed on the procedure already. He had us both get our Chest xrays and EKGS while we were there. He said the Drs in Port Huron Mi. move pretty fast. I have been to one of their seminars. Husband is going to one on Monday. I have called the banding Drs in Port Huron to set up consultations for both of us. I have been reading info from this and other sites. I love this site Keep your fingers crossed for us that things move along smoothly. I am trying not to get excited incase something falls through. :laugh
  19. Hi, I am Angela. I am getting banded on the 17th and currently on an all slim fast diet/liquid diet pre-op. It is extremely hard for me, but it will be worth it in the end. Welcome. Hopefully we can share our experienced and such since our surgeries are close.
  20. Hey everyone! I had the sleeve done on 4/6/16. I just started my phase one yesterday I'm drinking pretty fast but I'm kind of getting worried. I use the one ounce cup when I'm home but if I'm out I just drink slowly and take my sips. I'm not getting in all my 64oz of liquids, but I am getting all three Protein drinks in. Has anyone had trouble with getting all 64oz along with Protein Drinks in everyday? Is it bad I'm not using the 1oz cup every 5 minutes? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  21. Im not sure Iv hit a sweet spot, but I have been filled 3 times and the fill doctor says she wouldnt fill me any tighter. She watches with fluoro and does the barium swallow so she can see how fast the barium goes down. I got 1.8, 1.8 and .5 cc in a 10 cc band. I probably wouldnt bother getting another fill for quite a while. No point. I was a little to tight on my cruise in Jan. to eat in company, but yet at home where I kinda nibble dinner at a computer I dont notice the restriction.

    6 Days Post Op

I am 7 days post-op. I was so worried about getting in all my liquids and protein that i over did it by drinking too much and too fast and had quite a set back! So, don't worry as much and do what you can. I talked to a woman who said it took her a month to be able to get a full protein shake down in one day!
  24. Can or do you access to a Wii? The Wii active sports is pretty great if you ask me. I just got super bored with it. I need more fast paced, and it has a great 30 day challenge on there.
  25. I had my first fill last Thursday, 4cc's into my 10cc band. This is going ok. I can eat fine as long as I am chewing and going slowly. I have had a few episodes of not doing this well enough. Sometimes I feel satisfied with about 1 cup of food, sometimes I feel I need more. I usually get 3-4 hours of feeling like I am not hungry. This afternoon after eating lunch about 1.5 cups of chicken chili and beans, I still felt hungry. This suggests to me that I need more fill. However, I am burping so much. Even after the first bite, there is a lot of burping. I emailed my doctors office and my physician feels that due to the excessive burping I am overfilled and should have some fluid removed. I am sure that the burping is not due to eating too fast. I have tested this several times. I am just not sure about the un-fill. I am not sure about any of this right now, its all confusing. Sometimes I feel like I ate enough, sometimes I don't. I know that I am probably not in the green zone after the first fill, but if I am overfilled then....well I don't know what then. Any input about this is appreciated!
