Can you lose restriction after surgery???
Arabesque replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You won’t feel the restriction until you start solid foods. Liquids & purées to a point go through you too quickly. My restriction is still there & I’m almost 3 years. It kicks in if I eat too much, too fast, if what I eat is too dry or too coarse or if I drink too much at a time. But because I’m aware of those things it doesn’t happen very often now. Maybe people say they think it’s gone because they are consciously or subconsciously eating in a way that avoids it occurring. The goal really is not to feel the restriction especially if it’s tied to you eating too much or too quickly. Better to stop eating when you’ve had enough. Not until you are full and not until you feel the restriction. If it kicks in because what you’ve eaten is too dry or coarse or similar think of that as a warning & a protection. And you really don’t want to feel it. It’s very uncomfortable. The tightness can be quite painful because it feels like something is stuck. I often find myself thumping my chest trying to dislodge the blockage. -
Just hold on - It really is normal to feel what you’re feeling. Once you see the weight continue to drop off, you will fell different. The recuperation from surgery is no joke. Since you have fasted for so long and (depending what your doctor instructed you are probably eating purée food), you have released all of the toxins from pre surgery. This is really a chemical change and you’ll feel not so good but it’s just for now-not for always. You will make it ! You will feel differently when you eat real food. One day at a time, one hour at a time, one minute at time. You will make it and you’ll tell others that there is a light at the end of this journey. It will be alright.

Will I ever have my favorites again ??
Esi replied to PM2022's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The first few weeks are so hard. Not only is your whole food outlook changed, but you are at the most limiting point after surgery that you will ever be. It gets so much better! I did weigh and measure in the first few months, but now I can eyeball things. With the exception of no added sugar, nothing is off-limits. So when my family gets fast food, I eat a few of my children’s fries. Yet somehow because of the surgery, that is enough to satisfy me. No deprivation. Not having sweets and desserts became hard after a few months (The first few months, I had so much artificial sweetener that it made me sick). So, I found sugar free Russell Stover chocolates, as well as sugar-free Lilly’s brand. When I want something sweet, I reach for these, and a small amount satisfies me. I don’t miss cake, pie, brownies, etc. anymore. I don’t drink alcohol or coffee, but I use decaffeinated tea. -
GENERALLY SPEAKING (this is by no means a hard and fast rule though): it is usually in your head if: - you want something specific - the feeling of wanting to eat comes on quickly and intensely. - you still feel it even after eating something - it goes away or gets less intense when distracted. It is usually real hunger if: - you want anything (not something specific) - the feeling comes on slowly and grows more intense as time goes on - it lessens when you eat something

Drinking & burps
ShoppGirl replied to Vsgbethany22's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was able to meet my fluid and protein requirements very early out as well. It goes through you so fast that I don’t think you can possibly stretch your pouch. And if you had a leak you would have a bunch of other symptoms. -

Typical Meal Plan - 4 weeks post op
ms.sss replied to iKande03's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi! Short answer is you ARE doing things right if you are comfy after eating AND are losing weight (however “slow” or “fast” you may think it is). Congrats! Long answer is there is ALOT of variation on what folks can and do consume that first month. As well as rate of weight loss, some lose/gain/stay the same based on a host of factors (air/fluid retention from surgery, genetics, medical conditions, etc). With that said, i was one of those who had a case of semi-serious food aversion that first months so i barely ate. So it prolly wont help u to compare what i ate (or didn’t eat) with your intake. For what its worth, in my opinion, a 10 lbs loss in a month is awesome. Good Luck! ❤️ -
I am having my surgery in May17th! I am super exited. I started my preop diet today with slim fast. I decided to start early because I realized I started eating everything I enjoy thinking I could never eat again that way.

November Surgery Buddies!!!
Spinoza replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Ow wow - look at those losses and BMIs!!! I'm so glad to see you all doing so well. And I didn't know there was a 5-6 month stall, thanks for that. I'm right slap bang in the middle of it I think and I want it to GO AWAY NOW! What are you all doing exercise-wise? I think this is my next big hurdle. I walk the dog most days and do a really fast long walk (well, 3 miles) with a friend once a week. I think I need to do more but I work really long hours and it's easier just to veg out on the couch after work. I think the lighter evenings will help though. Gonna ask my friend whether we could walk on another night too - it's good motivation. And whether she might do the couch to 5k programme with me, I think it's time! -
Ok, breathe. It’s ok. It’s only been four days since a pretty major surgery. You’ve had 80+/-% of your tummy removed. There are lots of staples & sutures holding your tummy together. You have been inflated with gas & had your insides pushed, prodded & pulled. You’re supposed to be in pain. Give yourself time to heal. The gas pain, surgical pain & muscular pain will reduce. Some people find improvement after 3 or 4 days while others a week. We’re all different. Even our ability to tolerate pain is different & that’s ok too. Contact your employer & see if you can negotiate a delay to your return to work or maybe a staged part time return if you think you will need it. Again we’re all different & you may need longer to recover. A friend was back after a week no problem Another needed three weeks. Me, I needed four weeks & still only returned to work part time. (My blood pressure was very low & my energy levels were zip.) You’d know if you had a leak. They’re pretty rare these days. Symptoms to look for include: Dizziness Fever Shortness of breath or fast breathing - more than 18 breaths a minute Fast heart rate - higher than 120 beats per minute Worsening abdominal pain Chest pain shoulder pain (not from the gas escaping) A general feeling of illness and anxiety Be kind to yourself & your body. You’ve been through a lot.

Revision surgery 9/8/2021
scollins707 replied to scollins707's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello sleeve to Sadis. It’s been a while… I did a lot of yo-yoing 2-3 lbs. finally I stopped with my dietician's advice + phentermine and working out 3-4x a week;I’m down a Little over 40 lbs. I know that’s not saying a lot but it doesn’t have to be fast… I just need to see the scale consistently move. I think i wasted my time with the balance diet and probably would have seen better results on 30g CHO or less off top…. but im not complaining. p -
Wow, you lost 44 pounds in 8 weeks! I’ve only lost 7.6 pounds since my surgery two weeks ago. I can’t even imagine losing that much so fast. How often were you exercising? What type of exercise? P.S. Sorry about your injury. Fingers crossed for quick healing.

Gastric Sleeve leak symptoms; Fast heart rate, fever, chills; Abdominal pain, chest pain, and difficulty in breathing/breathing faster than usual; Visible drainage from the incision; Intense nausea and vomiting, low blood pressure, pain in the left shoulder area; Less urination and general weakness.

A restriction tends to run across our upper chest - a tightness, quite painful & very uncomfortable, makes me want to thump my chest to try to alleviate it. It passes for me after about 15-30mins. It’ll occur if I eat too fast or too much, swallow too large a mouthful or eat food that is too coarse or too dry. Though unpleasant, your restriction can be your best friend too - keeps you on track & doing the right thing so you don’t experience it.😉 But because we all have slight differences in our physiology your shoulder pain could be related to your restriction too. Best to contact your surgeon to ensure it’s not a sign of another issue. Remember: Cut your food into small bites. Use a teaspoon, a baby fork or buffet fork (spork) so you don’t overload your cutlery & take large mouthfuls. Eat slowly. Use gravies, stocks, sauces to keep your food moist. Choose tender cuts of meat like chicken thigh over breast. Don’t over cook meats which dries them out.

Well my Dr told me I probably wouldnt know but that stomach acid could leak inside me and antibiotics would need to be administered. Symptoms to watch for she said was abdominal pain, hard to breathe, fast heart rate, visible drainage coming from the incision site. Statistically I think its a low percentage that leaking happens but Im curious if anyone has had one

November Surgery Buddies!!!
Spinoza replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Oh I went looking for our thread and I can't believe it was on PAGE 3!!! Outrageous! Updates please? I'm doing well - have hit a bit of a stall for the last two weeks but I had one coming. Hoping to see the scales move again soon - I have more to lose! Feeling great, walking really fast these days for exercise and actually broke into a trot a few times recently - do you think I could run again? I would SO love that - I told my surgeon that when he asked what my main goal for WLS was. Edited to add - and it sounded completely ridiculous then, but not so much now... -

Drinking & burps
catwoman7 replied to Vsgbethany22's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
you won't stretch your stomach on liquids - they go right through you. also, leaking is discovered right away - before you even leave the hospital. They won't discharge you if they suspect - or discover - a leak. I was always able to drink more than they said I'd be able to. I asked the PA at my clinic about this, and he said my stomach would let me know if I was drinking too much or too fast. -
My hell week starts tomorrow (April 26th)
fourmonthspreop replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You can do it! I had two weeks on my pre op diet. Some things that helped: get different flavor shakes you like. Blend them with ice so you feel like you're having milkshakes. Stock up on sugar free jello and popsicles. I also sucked on sugar free jolly ranchers when I wanted to put something in my mouth. If you're allowed a small protein meal a day, eat it really slowly. When I got sick of the sweet stuff I made vegetable broth with chopped raw scallions in it. It goes by so fast and if you just have a week, you'll be done in no time! February 2022 Surgery Buddies
LaTiaV replied to MeganMyers's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello Feb 2022 group, since we are sharing here I go. I have lost 53 pounds but most of them on the first month, the last month I lost only 10. Almost 3 months PO I cannot eat eggs, bread, pasta or tortillas, I used to love tacos and I have not enjoyed one during the last 3 months. 2 weeks ago I started having salads and I love that I can have a decent amount. I feel full very quickly still half of a cup of solid food sometimes less, I had to travel recently for work and family and during that time it was easy to drink water but now that I am back at home I am struggling again I can do a little more than 32 oz. still pushing it. I am not a fan of protein shakes but try to do some smoothies with fruits and protein dust ( eww) since I know I am not getting all the protein I need from food. I felt bad for a few days and ended up in ER, I got a CT and endoscopy and everything seem to be fine but I am suffering from reflux, I took some pills for it and now I seem to be able to control it with not eating too close to bed time, reclined bed etc. I wish you all to be successful fast or slow however our bodies decide they want to go. -
February 2022 Surgery Buddies
fourmonthspreop replied to MeganMyers's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Great to hear everyone! On my end, I've lost 42 lbs. I can pretty much eat everything but I stay away from bread, white sugar/high sugar food/drink, and raw vegetables per my doc's order. I tried alcohol for the first time two weeks ago.. a vodka shot with water and lemon juice while out with friends. Didn't get super drunk really fast or anything, pretty much felt the same as it did before surgery. I do get very nauseous randomly on some days but for no apparent reason. I'm still on the nausea medication. I find that if I'm dehydrated and constipated, it makes me want to throw up. I take extra strength stool softeners every day along with my vitamins too. I've thrown up twice, once Feb, once in March, from eating too fast and getting food stuck in my esophagus. Doc said I can wait for it to pass but I find it so uncomfortable that I just need to throw it up. Definitely getting really good at eating slowly now and have learned my lesson. I just got back from a trip and barely ate anything on the trip or got in my 64 oz each day because I was out doing so much with people. I've been incredibly nauseous for the past 24 hours partially from constipation, my period and what I'm suspecting is dehydration. I am really good at getting in all my protein and water when I'm home but I have so much trouble keeping up with everything once my routine is switched up. I travel a lot so this is something I definitely need to get better at. The dehydration is no joke. -
Every surgeon has their own pre-op requirements. Unfortunately, the ASMBS doesn't have hard & fast guidelines for pre-op diets so they vary greatly from surgeon to surgeon. Most have some elements of calorie restriction, lower carb, and higher protein. Mine was on the more restrictive end, being 2 weeks of liquids only, but others follow a whole foods based plan that allows for multiple meals a day. As others have said, you'll need to get your plan for your surgeon and go from there.
