  1. I rarely weighed myself that early on, but I dug up some of my old posts and found these stats... 1 week...up 5 pounds 7 weeks....down 17 pounds 10 weeks......still stalled at 17 pounds After that I lost fairly steady and only had a few 2-3 week stalls along the way. But as you can see if you fast forward, my slow start does not reflect my overall success..... Down 78 pounds (surgeons goal) at 6 1/2 months Down 88 pounds (personal goal) at 7 1/2 months Currently down 97 pounds at 9 months Just keep on your plan and remember you are in this for the long haul and the numbers on the scale really aren't that important. As for my scale, I don't even own one. I weigh myself once a week on the dog scale at work so I have something to post on here. I weigh fully clothed, with shoes or boots, sometimes in the morning, sometimes after lunch. The accuracy really doesn't matter to me because I measure my success by how I feel, how my clothes fit and NSVs. Good luck!

    No weight loss

Honestly, there are so many reasons. - You could be retaining water (are you near time for your menses?) - You could be constipated (I once lost 4 lbs. in 20 minutes...) - Your body could be readjusting its fluid balance (this is what causes the 3-week stall) Just keep following your plan. It WILL come off.

    Last advice

Immediately after surgery (well, the next day ) : Walk, walk, walk, sip, sip, sip. Someone said those words to me, and it was my mantra for days! Walking really does make you feel better! Do it as soon and as often as you can! And sip all day long to stay hydrated! Weeks after surgery: Head hunger sucks. I hope you don't get it, but some do. Work through it by staying hydrated and finding the liquid Protein you enjoy the most. When you get cravings, read, walk, knit, do WHATEVER you can to divert your attention to how bad you want a cheeseburger! Realize that this liquid phase doesn't last forever (well, it did for me, but that's another story), and as soon as you start more solid food, the head hunger subsides. Also remember that you really won't feel the restriction from surgery on the liquid stage, so don't worry You will feel it once you start more solid foods. The dreaded 3 week stall will happen. Maybe not right at 3 weeks, but a stall will happen. Don't panic. It's normal. Follow the plan and it will end. Like Lipstick said, take pics to see your progress! You will see although you may not lose on the scale for a couple weeks, you will see the difference in the photos! Good Luck, good healing and congrats on your new life!!

    Difficulty eating

I am 6 weeks post op and experiencing the same thing. I saw my dr a few days ago and was told that as long as I get my protein and fluids in, I am doing fine. they said that some people take a little longer for the swelling to go down so there is no concern at this point. you most likely are experiencing the dreaded 3 week stall. Stick to your program and it will break. hang in there!

    Increasing calories

Has anyone tried increasing their calories to end a stall. For those of us who have been on diet after diet, trying to eat more calories seems wrong. All the research i have done says that women should not eat less then 1200 calories. For the first 3 weeks i was at 600 calories, now i am trying to increase my calories to 800. I made it yesterday but it was not easy. I do feel better with the additional calories but it is too early to see if it breaks me out of my 3 week stall. Anyone see success?

Day 17, first post op appt

Haven't posted in awhile, things are going really well, I am a little over 2 weeks out and down 17 pounds, haven't moved from that in 4 days so I figure the dreaded 3 week stall is hitting. Oh well, I have learned its very common. Went to see my surgeon today and dietician. My surgeon was amazed at my recovery,(I must say he is a cutie too!) I have not had any issues, besides nausea with the celebrate vitamins. I am transitioning according to plan. He said "you are what we like to see with this surg" that made me feel good. I have been following rules, although I snuck a peanut butter cracker in the other day. Chewed it till it was mush. I must say it was delightful! But I was satisfied with that amount, unlike before where I would have eaten 15 of them. I asked the surgeon how he closed the stomach after he cut it, (I like gory details) He said he uses titanium staples which are permanent, also sutures a type of goretex material that dissolves along the incision, and he takes some of the omentum(tissue throughout the abdomen) and sutures it around the stomach to keep it in place.(this helps with nausea) These are techniques that are fairly new and that he and his partners created and are being used around the country. The dietician has given me the ok for soft foods and purees, what I don't get is they do not allow eggs, like egg salad or scrambled. But I can have tuna or chick salad. That was weird. I will stay on this for 4 more weeks before real food happens. I have tried mashed potatoes, refried beans and creme of wheat already no issues. I am slowly understanding the feeling of restriction now with this new food. I like to know its there. That is what keeps me on track. I do not have problems with sugar(kinda wish I did) I had a 70 calorie orange creme cicle, and no problems with it. What I am really struggling with is the no drinking during meals, I find myself with dry mouth post op so I always have a glass of water/crystal light around. It is so hard not to reach for the glass during the meal or right after. But I am working on it. I have noticed a change in appearance, nothing substantial, but heck I'm only out 17 days. I do tend to be a bit impatient........ This weekend could be a challenge, sat we may be going to a pig roast for a birthday, no one there knows and I don't feel like telling the story 80 times, but if I do not have a beer in my hand they will all think I am pregnant. Ugh so I may just have to pretend I am drinking. Then sunday we are going to see my husbands grandparents and take them out for their birthdays. Also, folks I don't feel like telling, number one because well people from that generation do not understand weight loss surg, and I don't feel like trying to explain myself 20 times because of hearing aids. But I also know his grandma will be pushing food on my like crazy so I may have to give in on that. Anywho, just though I would update things. I have found a routine, I am making my own protein shakes in the morning and saving the packaged ones for at work or on the go so I don't get too tired of them. I use half a banana, one scoop unflavored unjry, one container of 100cal greek yogurt(berry) and 1/3 cup skim milk and ice. Tastes great and good consistency. Plus its like 36grams of protien. Great start to the day. Till next time.....

    the dreaded stall

Hi Kerry, Today is my 1 month surgiversary and I haven't lost anything notable in the last two weeks. It is very frustrating. I am going today for my 1 month follow up visit so I will see what they say but I am trying to remain positive that this is just the "3 week stall" situation and I will start losing again soon. Hang in there.

    Weight loss

Your doing fine. You're on the right track. I started out the same way, then hit the 3 week stall and was stuck until week 4. Don't focus too much on numbers because it will drive you crazy. You are also losing inches too. Keep up the good work.

    Metformin post surgery

yeah, almost everyone hits the 3 week stall. You didn't need to change anything, just wait it out. You will stall. It lets your body catch up to your weightloss. Your loss most likely had nothing to do with the metformin.
  11. Your at the 3 week stall no worries, it will pass.

    calorie burning lemon water

Where are we getting this from... I just found out I have to do using crystal light... it may be the reason im holding at almost a 3 week stall and I'm not even a month out

    Crushed by today's weigh-in

Most doctors aim for 2 lbs of weight loss per week on their reduced calorie diets. Following low carb, you can expect a loss of Water and inflammation during the first 2 week since equalling about 10% of total weight to lose, then slowing to about 2 lbs a week after that. There are hundreds, nay, thousands of posts about the 3 week stall on here. Many people will experience a stall on weight loss during that time frame, and periodically thereafter. A monthly cycle will affect scale weight, as will things like sodium intake and the time of day you weigh, wether you've had a bowel movement and stress levels.

How much loss 5 weeks out?

I'm 4 weeks tomorrow and down 23 lbs. Did not have 3 week stall but I'm sure it'll catch up with me. Lol.
  15. I was the same weight as you were before and at surgery time. I was losing quite a bit every week up until I hit the 230's. Just like you, I had about a 3 week stall and it seemed like forever before I was able to get below 228. Once the stall was over, I started losing 2-5 pounds a week, again. I'm at 215 now. Just because your body stalls a while does not mean you're doing anything "wrong". The human body needs time to adjust to so much weight loss in such a short amount of time. People don't realize that just because you're doing something "healthier" now, doesn't mean that your body is "healthy" in the middle of it. Your body is in shock and needs time to adjust. That's a lot of the reason why we "stall" in weight loss. 1,100 calories a day is perfect, especially with exercise! I've been heavily educated on this and I am confident to tell you that if you eat less than 1,100 calories a day, you aren't going to lose the weight as fast as you want and also, anything less can get you malnutrition REAL QUICK. Sounds to me like you are right on track with no reason to complain. Yes, stalling in weight loss is frustrating. We all know that but it didn't take you a few months to gain that much weight and it needs to come back off at a reasonable speed to keep you healthy. If you want to try and speed things along a little bit, try a harder work out or simply change it up a bit. Another idea is to cut out a few carbs and sugar from your diet than usual. Good Luck to you. I had my surgery on January 14th and my goal was to be under 200 by June 1st. I'm almost there. It's gonna be close but I can tell you that I'm VERY confident that you can meet YOUR goal.

    Only 0.7 in a week?

Omg! I totally went through that at the SAME time! 3 week stall I hope it doesn't last that long for you. But...I'm 9 weeks out and it's coming off crazy fast for the past two weeks. Totally normal. That's what my doc said when I called and told him about the no weight lose situation
  17. First thing, you're not losing weight because you are in the 3 week stall that we all had and is completely normal, not because of what you may or may not be eating. Honestly, it really doesn't matter what you're eating the first several months post op....the sheer calorie deficit is more than enough to make you lose weight almost automatically. Hope that makes you feel a bit better. That being said, you need Protein to heal and keep your muscle you're going to be losing with the weight. It also keeps you full and satisfied. If you are eating simple carbs and sugar, it's going to cause cravings. Try to JUST eat protein right now. If the dinners you're fixing involve a soft protein, nibble on that and nothing else. Keep dinners simple. What's wrong with a meat or fish with a veggie and let the rest of the family have the starch and you skip it? That's how I've cooked since surgery. Making spaghetti? You eat the meat and sauce and the family gets the Pasta. pizza? Eat the toppings. Tacos? Have the ground beef, cheese refried Beans and no tortilla. See? Keep it simple and it will be easier for you to stick to your plan. Protein is the key! Eat as much of that as you want through out the day!
  18. I had my surgery May 19 I have lost 16 pounds, I have hit a stall. Is there anything I can do to get pass this stall?

    Stopped losing

Do a search here for 3 week stall - you'll find a ton of posts. It's perfectly normal. Here's my suggestion - STOP WEIGHING. The scale is bad for your soul. It's evil. Let's look at the facts - you are still recovering from major surgery, your body is still recovering. Your body is also trying to figure out what you just did to it - you just removed 75% of a major organ! You've also limited your caloric intake to virtually nothing and you've probably increased your physical activity. Your body is in "WTF?????" mode. You didn't gain your weight overnight - let's not put the added stress on the situation by expecting your body to lose it overnight. Take a deep breath - you're going to be fine. I went thru the same thing - to save my sanity, here's what I did. My husband hid the scale from me and brought it out once per week. I took my measurements 1-2 times per month - I could actually see myself losing inches, even tho the scale wasn't moving I took a picture of myself once per week - I was literally melting away even tho the evil scale fairy was telling me I wasn't losing pounds. I love looking back at my journey thru pictures - you can actually see my attitude change as the weight comes off. It's amazing - I have more life in my eyes as the time goes by. I had to learn to not give the scale power over my thoughts - it's just a number on a piece of electronic equipments, why do we allow it the power over us? it can ruin our mood, our day, our confidence. Please do not give it that much power. I'm 18 months out and I weigh a couple of times a month now - it's just not that important to me any more. What's important to me is how I reel - emotionally and physically. The scale cannot tell me that.
  20. I had a 3 week stall and upped my calories to get it moving! I was doing 600 and upped it to 800. If you are weight training you could be building muscle that weighs more than fat. I read that if you weight train you should have carbs before and protein after? I am not going to start weight training until I get down to a decent size. I am more focusing on cardio right now.But ask your trainer!! Or doctor!
  21. Well Mystee.. I totally understand! I have been doing the same thing but it's probably when we need to be in here reading the most. I have read many people have a dreaded 3 week stall. So... I'm looking for relief around the week of the 7th of this month. We will see! I did notice that you are in ONEderland so congrats for that!
  22. So I am seriously talking stalls that last more than a week, not 2-4-5 days stalls! lets share experiences, I happen to hit a HUGE one now after my 3 month post op I Am currently having a 3 weeks stall! YUCK! Mine goes as follows: 1- I consume a lot of water more than 100 OZ a day 2- I eat reasonably 3- I find my capacity is getting bigger at 3 month post op ( but not hugely bigger) just more bites 4- I didnt exercise the first 2 weeks of this stall but happen to drop in the gym for some swimming the last week and also I was SO ACTIVE going to weddings and dancing and stuff like that. Now no matter what I DO and what I dont do, the scale is standing still:) Even when I exercise it is as if nothing happened. One day the scale went up 1.5 pounds and then the next day it is back to the normal stalling weight! SO How was urs?! how did u feel?! for me I am terrified that this is it! although deep inside I know I KNOW! there is more coming but it just crush ur positive energy and I AM Not giving in!! I AM CHOOSING TO PUSH PUSH PUSH! SO please share ur feelings:) I have about 41 lbs till goal and I already lost 39 since surgery:)

How do I break through this stall?!

You're in the 3 week stall. There's a link in my sig that explains it. It's very common. Don't worry too much about it. Read the link and know that you will lose more very soon.
  24. Y husband was sleeved and I don't remember him going through this. But I'm also constipated and due for my period so I'm wondering if gaining weight would be normal? I have gained 8 lbs
  25. Pandemonium

    Upset

Can you give us a rundown of what you're generally eating for meals and when you're eating them? 800 to 1200 calories immediately post-op seems a little high. I am 9 weeks out (VSG) and I only occasionally break 800 calories (and only once have I gone above 900). But I also suspect there's a little bit of 3 week stall creeping in, as well.
