First meeting with surgeon tomorrow. Need advice
Losebig replied to Rasor's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had a similar concern with the staples given the sleeve is a newer procedure. It turns out they use the same staples in the bypass as well, which is a much older procedure. As for other complications you can talk to your surgeon about them, most centers will keep their own stats on complication rates. In my case the surgeon has been doing bariatric procedures for 17 years and his own info was extremely helpful. I asked how many people he had die and why (turned out it as only a few in that entire time). I also talked about life expectancy after the procedure and we talked about a couple studies that were done (weirdly your risk of accidental death is higher after surgery according to one study for some unknown reason - but generally it's far less than doing nothing). Staples and other things from surgery are used in other procedures as well, so you may be able to do some research on that avenue if you want. The one thing that was totally clear to me was that the risk of staying as I was, was far greater than any risk imposed by the surgery long or short term. The risks of obesity are well researched and proven, so that part of the analysis is unfortunately very easy. -
Doesn't sound like fun. I'd also take a look at anything you're eating that could have a laxative effect. For example sugar alcohol is in a bunch of sugar free and bariatric stuff (especially calcium supplements) and that can cause that. Hope you get it figured out, I think some kind of pad or diaper is a good idea until you get it figured out, that way it is just annoying VS a catastrophe if you're at work.

March 2018 -- calling all bariatricpals
Apple203 replied to Apple203's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
OMG, Fluffy, that is terrible! Plus, I selfishly want you in my month, LOL. My surgeon has my surgery and post op visits scheduled out for me through September --- yeah more dr appointments (said no one ever). Here's my update. I am immersed in physical therapy sessions to strengthen my knees and hips, which is going surprisingly well! In Feb, I branch into specific sessions designed for bariatric patients until surgery. Two weeks after surgery, I am back to physical therapy for another 4 weeks. I am still waiting for my CPAP machine -- its been almost 3 months, and I'm still alive despite having severe sleep apnea. Very frustrating. Finally, I got my pre-op diet requirements and I get to eat real food -- hallelujah!!! 3 meals with 3-4 ounces of protein, veges and salad dressing, 1 snack, and 3 fruits and/or yogurts a day. Or I can have protein shakes as a substitute for any or all of these. Hope everyone is doing well! -

As I neared the end of my weight loss phase as I transitioned into the maintenance phase, I found constipation became a major issue. I became so constipated that I had to rely on glycerin suppositories (that I had to shove up my rear end every few days) to unbind me. Eventually I found a cure that worked for me. I found that if I ate an apple each night before bedtime, by morning things were good. But it was important to eat the skin of the apple in addition to the pulp of the apple. Other past recommendations from this site to deal with constipation were: Smooth Move Herbal Tea Prune Juice (warmed) Prunes (4 in the morning and 4 at night) Magnesium citrate Insoluble fibers (Garden of Life Raw Fiber or Renew Life Triple Fiber). Haribo Sugar Free Gummy Bears [Warning: eating too many can cause severe diarrhea] Aerobic Magnesium 07 Ground Flax Seeds (but don’t try to grind it yourself). Use 2 tablespoons per glass of water every night before going to bed. Bowel Clear (herbal blend)

JULY SLEEVERS- How are you doing?
PrayingForWeightLoss replied to dreamingsmall's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There you go! You are still determined to reach goal weight and you will. Stress throws us off but keep pressing with your renewed hope. I sincerely hope things work out for you. We have already come so far by having the surgery. Keep your head up high! -
Hi all, I am now beginning the process for my VSG surgery. The surgeon I am going to have it with is Dr. Spencer Holover in Roslyn NY... he is with the NY Bariatric Group. Anyone had their surgery with him? Please share your experience if you have. I have GHI and BCBS insurance, how long did it take to get the surgery with these insurances in NYS? I am hoping to have my surgery by July🤞🏽.

Why do I feel hungry??
Creekimp13 replied to hanoon's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think this notion of "it's just head hunger" after bariatric surgery is total BS. You're starving your body. Of course you're going to be hungry! You're not feeding yourself. Your body is very literally going into starvation. Yes...you're HUNGRY. I don't know who decided that you're not supposed to be hungry after surgery, but I sure as heck was. When I started eating 1000 balanced calories a day two weeks after surgery, I wasn't hungry anymore:) -
January bypass buddies??
Nancy Geoghegan replied to MsTipps's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi there. I start preop diet tomorrow. Does your doc have you on only liquids for two weeks pre-op? Mine is two Bariatric Advantage protein shakes per day - breakfast and lunch - and then a sensible dinner. One of the main reasons they do this pre-op diet is to shrink your liver. Many of us have fatty liver disease which in and of itself is a chronic liver disease - https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/nonalcoholic-fatty-liver-disease/symptoms-causes/syc-20354567 As you can see if you read the link from the Mayo clinic above it happens a lot to obese people. It is not something you want to have anyway so go with that. Don't let the insurance issue direct your behavior. You know that it will be good for you no matter what. Also, I wonder if they would let you get this far if they didn't have a good idea about the insurance outcome - just a thought. I'm no expert. Lastly, when we start to lose fat the first place it comes off is your liver. If you are having a abdominal surgery - especially laproscopic - docs want the fatty liver to shrink so they can see better and have more room for surgery. Either way you are improving your heath. I guess that is what I would hold on to. God bless. -

Hello, I’m 2 weeks post gastric sleeve surgery. I can’t really eat or drink much of anything. I’m on a soft Bariatric diet, but I’m struggling finding meals that will go down normal without filling me up after two bites. Mashed potatoes does well, but is not strongly recommended by doctor. Have anyone else found other substitutes besides protein shakes? Does this get better in time? I knew my relationship with food would change, but dang! I just want it to go down normal.

Welcome welcome! And just keep pushing forward - when that little seed of doubt pops up, confront it and really think about what the 'real' reason it's whispering in your ear. Usually, it's the fear of the changes that you'll have to make - no more mindless snacking, no more 'I had a sh*t day so I'm gonna binge on pizza,' no more of the stuff we shouldn't have been doing in the first place. When I would think about the doubt in that way, it just made the doubt smaller each time, and my resolve stronger. PS I think I'll be out in Berlin at the end of May for a business trip (with some added vacation days, of course!). I may poke you for some ideas on things to see - maybe we could even meet up for an international Bariatric Pal social!

Dr. David Kim patients
twinmommy2004 replied to twinmommy2004's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Neil, I did have the VSG on 4/28/2017, and Dr. Castro was my surgeon. He is with DFW Bariatric Institute (formally Kim Bariatric Institute. It was very frustrating be a patient during their transition, but only insurance/paperwork wise. My surgery was awesome. Dr. Castro took very good care of me and I recovered very quickly. I have lost 103 lbs, and I'm only 7 lbs from my goal weight! Please let me know if you have any other questions. -
I'm still buying the chewable Bariatric Advantage calcium. I may change to something less expensive or not bariatric-specific at some point, but I figured for the first few months at least I would stick to bariatric-specific vitamins.

First time I went in for a weight loss surgery consultation was about 18 years ago. For 18 years I told myself...you can do this without surgery. (I hate when people say "on your own" because if you've had surgery, you're STILL "on your own"...LOL) Straws that broke the camel's back. 1. Back pain. Like horrible pain that had me looking for benches to sit on during regular appointments, outings and grocery shopping trips. Couldn't be on my feet for long without wanting to cry. Was eating enough ibuprofen to rattle like a maraca. 2. My A1C was creeping up and became pre-diabetic. 3. This is the biggie. I'm doing peri-menopause and had some weird spotty periods. Ended up doing a lot of testing and needed a uterine biopsy. We were concerned about endometrial cancer....and my doctor said...well, you do have risk factors, in particular your years of morbid obesity put you at risk for endometrial cancer and ovarian cancer. And that's where all my fears of bariatric surgery disappeared. I'm a hell of a lot more afraid of cancer....than I am of getting a sleeve. Also, my kid is a biologist, and one day I'm going to have grandkids...and you know she's going to take them on adventure vactations. Hiking, canoeing, caves, etc. I don't want to be left behind. I don't want to be Grandma-Can't-Come. I want to be a crazy grandma on water skis someday. I want to have adventures with my family. I want to be sleeping in the kid tent telling ghost stories. So yeah...my life without weight loss....scares me a hell of a lot more than surgery, than facing my demons, and making peace with food. Everyone has a process on how they reach their decisions. Took me 18 years of wrestling with doubts and fears and anger about being fat and having shitty genetics and a food addiction. One day, I just had clarity. This is what I'm going to do. Yep, there will be stumbles. But I'm on my way and I might get delayed, but nothing will stop me from getting there. Best wishes to all who struggle:)

Big Viffer, Mattymatt and all may I share this with you guys? My late husband was 3 inches taller than me & outweighed me by 20 lbs, yeah a big guy. He was the first and only big guy I ever gravitated to. He had turned on me emotionally the last few months of his life, guess he was dying but I thought he was going senile. I believe we would have separated in a few months, it was That bad. What he said and it still burns in my soul is: you are so fat and ugly not even a blind man would touch you, and if you didn't have me you would have to,pay a man before he'd consider it. This from a man I'd given 44 years of my life to. Were he living he would never have supported my decision for bariatric surgery. After he died while going through his papers I found papers from his PCP (different one from mine) stating he had end stage renal. disease. Did he see a nephologist/urologist, nope and he didn't share this with me, his wife, best friend whould been with him since he was 25. I'd like to rationalize he was trying to protect me, well it didn't and I had a jumble of things to straighten when he suddenly died on the 4th of July 2012. I try not to be bitter but I would helped if he had let me know. Shoot I have 3 kidneys, would have given him one of mine, if I didn't match OSU has done the ones where you donate to a chain and yours going to your match and maybe they have someone who matches you. Why didn't he trust me? Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

Every Dr. is different, I guess, Mine doesn't indicate that I need a bariatric specific vitamin. My blood work has always been A-ok with Centrum. He does recommend a bariatric specific vitamin for RNY patients, just not for sleeve patients.

Hospital bag suggestions

Actually I'm a Buckeye but we're next to West Virginia and Kentucky, I had Virginia and Kentucky Aunts marry into the family, my BFF is from central West Virginia, although I'm not a GRIT- girl raised in the South I'm pretty dang close. Love SpoonBread, Ramps and I'm the only one in my immediate family that eats and loves collard greens. Like grits. But I don't like red eye gravy, just put a dollar of butter or cheese on them. And I can affect a thick enough accent you' d think I was from Alabama, Mississippi or even Georgia, especially if I'm talking to someone from there, kinda fall into their speech patterns. Betcha I could talk Texas if I ever met Fluffy Chix face to face, gosh I love her postings on Bariatric Pal and she and I might end up surgery twins, seem to be on the same timeline. Have a glorious day my friend. Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app -
It was hard to build muscle while in weight loss mode. I managed to retain it by lifting and increasing my protein goal. I built more after stopped losing weight. After I lost my weight, I used sports medicine dietitian to dial in my diet. My calorie intake and macronutrients are increased to support distance running. It takes all day eating small meals to fuel your body as an athlete. I am competing in a half marathon altitude trail race this April. The starting line is at just above 2,500 feet above sea level, and runners reach an elevation of about 4,700 feet above sea level. I've been competing in distance runs for three years now. Training: My gym sessions are two hours five days a week. In the gym I use a sports bottle with a rubber camelbak bite straw.(I refill it several times) I sip and I don't get air in my stomach. I can't gulp water. Hiking, biking and distance runners hydration vests. They have a straw bite ...You can sip slowly on your route. They hold tight to your body. Less bounce than a camelbak system. I use nuun tabs for hydration. they don't upset my sleeve.
