    Scared and Unsure

I know you're scared - I was scared too. I was fine up until I had to walk "behind the door" from the waiting room into the surgery area and at that point I burst into tears and had to bawl in the bathroom for about 15 minutes. After that I was fine. You are doing the right thing. You won't be thinking that for about a week after surgery, but that goes away. I am so thankful I had this surgery, and I have such a positive outlook on life now. I get compliments just about every day, and I still have a long, long way to go. As someone else said, if you weren't scared of surgery, something would be wrong with you. It's like being scared to stand in front of a group of people and speak - everyone gets scared, nervous, anxious. But that is the great thing about being alive - you get through situations with courage and strength and you become a better person for it. Good luck and come see us when you're on the other side - we will be here for you!
  2. At my first check-up he checked to see if I was healing and following the rules. He told me to move onto solid food slowly. I didn't receive my first fill until 6 weeks out.

    I Noticed.....

This week I noticed that after being down just over 40lbs my seat belt retracts in the car when I get out. I used to have to pull on it to make it go back in place.

Terry so glad to see you are doing well. I am almost to my 3 year bandiversary as well . I come on the site to see how everyone is doing and I still have some struggles. The biggest problem I had this year was the illness and subsequent death of my husband. emotional eating is a difficult thing to overcome. I am still doing good too , gained a few lbs throughout my husband's hospital stays and hospice at the end. WE always seek comfort in food when we are emotionally at a low point. I still am happy that I made the choice to have lapband and I have lost some of the "comfort" weight since his death in October. My health is definitely better and I am much more active than before. Take Care and check in once in awhile. I miss some of the regulars that helped me so much in the beginning.

    3 Year anniversery

Calendar reminded my that it has been 3 years since I got my lapband and I thought I would check in. Total lost is about 70 pounds, but it does fluctuate. I am still wearing size 34 pants (down from 46), although this holiday season has made them a bit tight, I should be back to normal in a couple of weeks of regular eating. Still one of the best decisions that I have ever made, especially since I was diagnosed with Prostate cancer(currently in complete remission) a couple of years ago, the weight loss made the accompanying surgery and radiation much easier on my body. Lapband is/was not a cure for me, it is a tool. I still wrestle with emotional eating although that is becoming less and less. There are times I hate the band because it forces me to seek other solutions to emotional turmoil that do not involve food. I don't visit the site very much anymore because my eating and weight are no longer a focal point of my existence, in that I think I am as close to normal as I will ever be. But this site and a large portion of the contributors were instrumental to me to getting my band to work for me. Thanks.
  6. SLEEVE TO BYPASS REVISION. I apologize in advance if this is not where I post this at. I have been sleeved for 21 days now....and now I may have to have the bypass within 2 weeks. I never had actual GERD before but have had GERD ever since the surgery. I don't have any vomiting at night like others have mentioned...but it restricts me from now getting any food but cottage cheese in and only about 20 ounces of water. I'm not talking like the tiny acid I used to get with eating a whole pizza and then laying down ...I'm talking like punch you in the stomach pain & sizzling noises all day long in my throat. I boil acid all day long. It's not excruciating...Its just not good on a sleeve and I'm scared It will eat through my staples or hurt my small pouch even more. I was 270 day of surgery and weighed this morning at 238. I'm losing weight like a champ but it's because my intake is super low. I saw my surgeon on Friday and he raised my Nexium but said that if in 2 weeks I was still having the Gerd that he was going to do a sleeve to bypass revision. Has anyone had a sleeve to bypass revision? If so I would love to hear about your experience. Good or bad. I've googled many posts but can't get straight forward answers. How was the pain? Did you have complications? And how is your quality of life now? Tia

Rice free chicken and broccoli casserole

3 chicken breasts sautéed in 1 tsp olive oil, seasoned with salt and pepper 2 packages of frozen cauliflower, boiled until tender then chopped (I pulsed it in the food processor), seasoned with salt and pepper 1 package frozen broccoli pieces, blanched in boiling Water 1 can 98% fat free cream of mushroom Soup 1/2 cup plain nonfat Greek yogurt 2 TB Hellmans light mayo 1 tsp garlic powder 2 cups of shredded low fat sharp cheddar cheese Mix soup, yogurt, mayo, and garlic powder. Spray 9x13 pan with cooking spray. Layer cauliflower, chicken, broccoli, sauce and cheese. Bake in 350 oven for 30. I attached the stats for 1/9 of the pan. I can't manage quite that, but a half cup is just a bit shy.

    Surgery sch. For May 8th!

Hi Manuela, Are you having the lap band done or a revision? My surgery is on May 6th and I'm having a revision from the lap band to the gastric sleeve. I begin my 2 week liquid diet tomorrow. Nervous and excited all at the same time!

How many days till you felt good?

Hi @@Comeflywithme I have had great days and not great days off and on since surgery. I am 2 1/2 weeks out Definitely having more really good days and think my not great days are cause I overdue it when I feel good (story of my life!!)
  11. Please don't treat sleep apnea lightly. I am losing my wonderful father as a direct result of his life time struggle with sleep apnea. He exercises more than anyone I know, eats a super healthy diet, and takes care of himself. He has his C-PAP machine adjusted regurally (settings need to be adjusted all the time) He is only 59 years old and the doctors don't give him much time. He has had 3 surgeries to open his air ways. It all boils down to the years of sleep apnea that have taken there toll on his heart and lungs. It is impossible for me to deal with. He is not overweight at all. On a side note....I was banded knowing that I needed to lose between 50 and 60 pounds at the most. I had a really low BMI. I was banded Nov 2004 and have lost 40lbs. SLOW but sure wins the race. Just my 2 cents. Take care. Christine

    Is this normal

My doctor doesn't let his patients start on the pureed stage until Weeks 3 - 4. The amount of calories he expects us to max out at due to our restriction (mine was a bypass) roughly works out to around the same amount the Mom_of_Chaos mentioned. If your doctor gave you a post op diet to follow, I'd check to see if the calories were supposed to be limited. If it is not clear, but sure to call your doctor's office and ask. I know the first 3 to 5 weeks after surgery is a time of healing and adapting so I'd ask sooner rather than later about the number of calories you can consume, but that is just my own thought. At least you would have peace of mind based on checking. Best of luck!

    Spinning

i waited until i was back on normal food which was 6 weeks after surgery. I had to turn down the resistance and pace at first but back to normal now
  14. I need to get 75-90 grams of Protein a day. I really need to start getting into buying the big powder drinks. Anyone that's post op have any suggestions? Now I've been drinking muscle milk and milk and 3 oz of protein a day.. That's not close to what's needed and MM is expensive and only 20g.. Please list powders you've tried and/or ways to hit the daily requirements.. By the way I'm 6 days post op..
  15. Hey there...welcome to banded life! I'm 4.5 weeks post op--I'm eating some fairly normal stuff--you just have to be really careful...i ate too fast today and wasn't chewing well (just completely forgot about the band--i was talking and visiting and all) and man--did it hurt!!! Anyway-thought I was going to throw it all up!!! I caught it quickly and just had to sit there a bit and then I was fine. Just take it easy--you don't want to go crazy--what would be the point of all of this then? Also, I know you have to be careful about the band slipping and stretching. There are some REALLY great threads on here....I didn't have time to search for them...but I think one of them was like "what's everyone eating" or something like that...and everyone kind of posted at what stages they were eating things...that was pretty helpful. Good luck to ya...BE CAREFUL and yes, CHEW AND SLOW DOWN and SMALL BITES!!!!
  16. Perhaps thinking of the constant vigilance required to maintain one's weight loss as a chore that one must do daily isn't such a bad thing. If you never washed your dishes or scrubbed the toilet you would live in filth. Some people do but I couldn't live that way, not that I'm suzy super housekeeper, mind you. It does suck, like lots of not particularly enjoyable but necessary aspects of life. I've recently been testing my sleeve with lots of low-quality fat food=garbage. Essentially a reaction to stress. The result was a 3 lb gain, mostly Water retention caused by the excess sodium. My body stubbornly refused to let go of that excess Fluid for two days. "Take that!" It told me! "Eat crap and you won't be able to crap!" And it mocked me as I looked at my swollen ankles. So I'm back on the wagon after my little binge. Sugar is one enemy but salt can be just as bad for me. I love them both, God help me! Recently downloaded an app called "eat slower". It's free and simple and so far is helping me to stop inhaling my food, which has always been a problem for me. I've noticed when I use it that I pay more attention to my food and thus enjoy it more and that I feel the restriction better and thus stop eating before becoming overfull (another issue of mine). Good God, after reading this it's freaking miracle that I managed to lose any weight even with the sleeve!
  17. First, I have to have a laparoscopic nissen fundoplication for severe GERD in addition to the lap band. Has anyone had both at the same time? Two procedures but one surgery? How long did you have to stay in the hospital and how did everything go? I asked the lady on the phone and she obviously misunderstood my question because she said start to finish she was only in the hospital for 3 hours including registration for both procedures, but online it says an overnight stay is typical for the GERD surgery. Second, I am only waiting on the psych evaluation for approval. I was told it would take a week max to get the results, but it has been almost two weeks now and the psych office just keeps telling me that they will check with the doctor and see what is causing the delay. I also have checked with my doctor's office and they haven't heard anything but said it is unusual that it takes this long from this psych office. Of course, this has me terrified that I failed the evaluation. How long did it take to get your results back? What happens if I fail? The doctors office had planned on getting me approved by the end of this week, but with the psych eval pending and taking much longer than expected, I doubt that will happen. I was told to go ahead and start the pre-op diet since it would only take around 2 weeks to get the psych eval back AND approval from insurance (a week for each). I was told to go ahead with that over a week before my psych eval because the longer the pre-op diet, the better. I cannot help but feel cheated by being on this diet for over 3 weeks now while the psych office drags their feet. To make matters worse, my husband travels for work. With the delay from the psych office with no communication regarding the delay, it looks like I may have to wait until the end of March when we were aiming for the beginning. This means I'll be on the pre-op diet for almost 2 months if that happens. I knew this was a commitment from day one. I knew it would be hard work. I know how restrictive the diet is post-op. I can't help it if I feel like I should have been able to have one last brownie or something pre-op, you know? I guess sticking with the diet this long shows my commitment and knowing surgery may be post-poned makes it easy to cheat, but I won't. Has anyone been through similar issues going in to this? If so, do you have any advice that may ease my mind?

    Questions about Smoking

I quit smoking with the patch 10 years ago, after smoking 2 packs/day for 17 years. I don't miss it, never even had a craving after the first 3 months. Back then, a pack cost around $2, a carton was $16. Anyone know what they cost these days?

I Need Some New Recipes! Help!

I just made some mini green enchiladas in cupcake tins. Easy recipe. Sauté some diced onions, chicken breast, salt and pepper. Add the green enchilada sauce. Line low carb tortillas in the tins and layer in refried Beans (1 Tblspn), chicken with sauce and top with cheese. Cook in 325 for 30 mins. Yummy! I let cool and put 3 per bag for each meal. My whole family loved them. I like easy and this was it! I found it on a link, but can't remember the link, so I thought I'd share with you the best recipe I've made since surgery. :-) email me with questions.

    almost time and worried!!

The people on this site are great and there is nothing to be worried about. You'll do just fine. I prepared myself for a week of pain and was almost disappointed that all there was was a lot of gas.
  22. Hey there Firecrackers. At 1 week out, I thought I would share some random thoughts on issues of concern to the soon-to-be-sleeved and the newly-sleeved. Clear liquid Diet- Why is everything neon-colored? I'm so happy to start full liquids tomorrow so I can consume something that is a color actually found in nature. My designated diet shelf in the fridge looks like a circus with all the varieties of Isopure, Powerade Zero, Protein bullets, and SF Jello. I don't care if ever see them again but the neon SF Popsicles can stay. Although the Isopures and Protein bullets are not the greatest tasting things I ever drank, I highly recommend working them in somehow for at least the first week post-op. My strength and energy really picked up around Day 3 when I started drinking them instead of just Water & ice. Going Back To Work- Everyone worries about how soon they can or should go back to work. I went back to my desk job sooner than most, on Day 5. Really, the biggest challenge has been finding clothing that doesn't bother my incision areas. I can squirm around in my chair to find the best position to relieve any stress on the incisions. It's a little tougher to get comfortable driving but it's doable. My energy has been fine as long as I'm getting in some protein. I had much worse energy problems back when I was eating a bunch of junk and sending my blood sugar on a wild ride. Of course, everyone's situation will be different. Just thought I'd share my experience. Hydration- I admire anyone who can get in the recommended 64 oz of liquid per day. It's tough when you're still swollen. At the first sign of a gurgle, hiss, burp, or hiccup, I back off from my sipping until Lil' Guillermo calms down. I haven't had anything come back up and don't want to push my luck. Haven't experienced any dehydration symptoms so I guess it's working out OK. Hopefully, I can up to the 64 oz target soon. Just some random thoughts. Hope somebody finds something of use. Kathy

    6 Week Stall

I too was sleeved on 9/25 and I have been losing weight consistently. Since the surgery, I have lost 35 pounds. I try time weigh myself once a week but didn't lose anything in the past week. My exercise routine has picked up so I'm hoping it's due to muscle gain.
  24. Dr. John Alexander did my sleeve surgery 2 weeks ago and I'm doing great!!
  25. Today I had my 2 week postop checkup with my surgeon. He was very pleased with the incisions and etc...I lost a total of 16lbs since surgery. I am having a hard time getting in my water but I am getting in my proteins. I also drink all the way to midnight. I am to start on soft foods today. I tried McDonald fish filet party. I tore off the breaded part and just ate the inside. It filled me up..its worth 9gms of protein.not sure if it was the best to choose but it did suffice for the moment.
