    Bad family experience :(

Yeah, my brother is so hateful. He is usually calmer but all of the sudden he is just all over me. I called him today to tell him that I want to have a good relationship with him but I will not be talked to like that. It all spiraled out of control and he came right out and said "I won't support you, you're taking the easy way out. All you need is some self control. Just quit eating so much junk and excercise and I guarantee you will lose weight". It was no use explaining that I have all kinds of medical conditions that contribute to weight gain. He won't listen. He thinks he is right and that is it. I did speak with my dad today and I finally got a lot off my chest. I told him that he has hurt me a lot over the years with things he has said about my weight. I told him that I have a lot of anger towards him about it. He actually apologized and said that sometimes he has said things to me that he wishes he hadn't. He said that he thought if he kept saying things that it would somehow "jumpstart" me into doing something. I told him that I have tried many times and that my medical conditions really don't help. It was a really good talk and he is supporting me. I am really happy about it! As for my brother, well I guess we are going to be like those siblings that never talk to each other. My mom is really sad because she thinks that we are all each other has once her and my dad die. When I asked him why he has all of these angry feelings towards me and I started talking about feelings, he hung up on me. I think there is more than meets the eye with his anger but I don't know what it is. I told my mom that until he apologizes for his behavior, I am not speaking to him. The last thing I need in my life is another negative person. I just wish I didn't have to cut my own brother out of my life

    Banded, now what?

I have had a very hard time losing weight even before surgery. I lost like 10 pounds and gained 2 pounds in the third week after surgery. My body tends to get used to a certain weight and it will try to rebound to that point. Hearing that all of you have lost so much already has been something I'm pondering but I haven't given up hope. I just got back from a week-long cruise to the caribbean with all that entails. I was able to eat anything and everything. We went to the buffet for dinner each night instead of the fancy dinners. It was really very good. I was dreading coming home today and having a confrontation with Mr. scale. Well, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I hadn't gained any weight. I realized as I was going through the week that I was filling my plate up but eating very little of it. My husband was coaching me the entire time: "imagine what you think you would eat and cut that in half." Stuff like that. But I could really tell the difference between how much I could eat before and what I was able to eat now. Even so, I really was prepared for a weight gain. The last time I went on a cruise (April), I gained like 6 or 7 pounds. My point is that even though I feel like I can eat anything, my portions are obviously more under control (not from me) than they were. For this I am so grateful. I get my first fill on Nov. 20th and am really hoping for a bit of restriction to kick my weight loss into gear. Good to see you again Holly. I was worried about you. Have you seen NicNacNut?
  3. Hi all, I'm Audie. I was banded May 2, 2007. I have the 10 cc band. My starting weight was 326 lbs ... my highest weight EVER. I had a series of traumatic experiences that led to emotional eating and subsequent weight gain! I am now down in the 240s and still losing. I just got my third fill ... and let me tell ya, this site kept me from panicking about it! :clap2: At the doctor's office, the Water went down without any restriction so I really thought I had dropped a lot of money on a fill just to be able to eat whatever I wanted again. WRONG! The next morning I woke up and I could feel the restriction. I have been pretty miserable. I can only get two bites and truly only sip water or else I end up throwing up. I am a very sensitive person, so I'm pretty sure my tummy is very irritated. He also withdrew all the liquid to see where I'm at. I'm over 4cc's full in my band. So after reading the forums, I decided to give it another week or so. As if I sip, I can get a glass of water and Protein shakes down. Takes a long time, but hey, that's ok! I've lost quite a few pounds, though, in the past couple days. However, there are a few issues going on that I haven't yet experienced. My acid reflux became non-existent after I was banded. Now all of the sudden, I had a case last night! Isn't that the weirdest? And I have trouble sleeping, so some nights I take a tylenol PM. It went down friday night, but not saturday night ... so it's weird my tummy fluctuates that much. I've been losing weight all along, so that isn't an issue for me, but this is the first time I've felt this much restriction. I don't want to go for an unfill because if I keep dropping weight, the restriction will lessen. How long can a person's stomach stay irritated from this activity? I went from like 3.25cc's to over 4cc's. I know everyone's bodies are different. :woot: Thanks! And this seems like a great forum. I was excited to find it last night! Audie
  4. I decided I didn't want to keep my surgery a secret from my closest family but I also didn't want to have to keep explaining it over and over and I certainly didn't want to argue or debate with anyone (something my family is known for, including me! ) So I sent out an email in advance and the results have been great. No one argued or disagreed, at least, not to me. I received some well wishes before and after surgery. And while there may be questions when I see them over the holidays, my hope is that I've cleared up a few things in advance. Here's my email: Subject: Do you know what Lap Band Surgery is? (Warning: this is long!) It's a procedure in which an inflatable band is placed around the upper portion of your stomach. There is a tube attached that runs to a port that is placed just below the skin. Saline is injected into the port to inflate the band. The idea is to create a pouch of the stomach through which food initially passes. When this pouch is full, you feel full and so eat less. I am having this procedure on Thursday. I have researched it extensively and have visited the surgeon, a nutritionist, a psychologist, and my own family doctor. All have been supportive but I was especially pleased with my own doctor's opinion, since he has no affiliation with the others, though, coincidentally, he knows the psychologist. (She has a regular family counseling practice and does not work for the surgeon.) My doctor said that he has about half a dozen patients who have had the procedure and all of them are doing great. He was very positive about me doing this. Also, he performed all of my pre-op tests and I am in excellent health. I have about 70 pounds to lose. The Lap-Band will not cause me to lose it especially quickly. However, it should help me keep it off. You may recall that I lost 70 pounds four years ago, too. I fought to keep that weight off with continual dieting and exercise. Unfortunately, diets don't work, and 95 percent of people who lose weight will gain it back. People tend to be blamed (or blame themselves!) for this regain but there is more and more evidence that our bodies are programmed to regain this weight. I read a recent study with rats: two groups of rats were given the same amount of food. The rats who had previously lost weight GAINED while those that hadn't stayed their normal weight. Of course, those of us who have struggled with our weight for many years don't need these studies to convince us this is true! Here's what's going to happen to me: I go in for surgery at 7 a.m. at Austin Surgical Hospital. It's a laparoscopic procedure that should take no more than an hour. After I've recovered, I'll go home the same day and I'll go back to work Tuesday. For the first week or two, I will be on a diet of Clear liquids. Then I'll be on full liquids (anything that can go through a straw) for another couple of weeks. Then I'll be on soft foods (foods that can pretty much be swallowed without chewing) for a few weeks. Finally, I'll be able to start adding normal food. I will need to chew thoroughly and slow down the eating process. I will also not be drinking with my meals because liquid just pushes the food on through. Eventually, I'll be able to eat most foods but more slowly and in smaller quantities. The process is slow in order to allow my stomach to get used the band while I get used to learning to eat differently. After six weeks, I'll go in for my first adjustment, called a "fill." My surgeon is conservative about filling the band, one of the reasons I chose him. I want to take my time and adjust to each change. I am not in a hurry about losing the weight, especially knowing that this will be the last time! The perfect amount of restriction is being able to eat almost anything I want in small quantities without being hungry but still losing weight. While some people get exactly the right amount of restriction with no fill at all, it is more typical to get three or four fills, or more, several months apart. Also, as one loses weight, there is less pressure from fat on the outside of the band, so the band can loosen up, requiring a fill. The band can be unfilled a little or completely if I ever get too much restriction or have a medical reason for needing more food. Also, the band can be removed completely in a similar surgery and my stomach would return to normal. However, this is only done if there is a medical reason for it. It's considered permanent like a knee replacement or defibrillator. This is a big difference from gastric bypass surgery, which is a permanent reconstruction of the stomach and cannot be reversed. One of the best articles I read that summed up the procedure is an ABC news article about Khaliah Ali's book, "Fighting Weight." She is Mohammed Ali's daughter and she had the Lap-Band surgery. An excerpt from her book is in the article and she does a good job of summarizing: ABC News: Excerpt: Khaliah Ali's 'Fighting Weight' I have other links if you would like to learn more about it. Mr. Longhorn and the girls will be taking care of me after the surgery, though I shouldn't need much. The surgery is considered comparable to gall bladder surgery. I'll be up and walking a lot that weekend to get rid of the CO2 gas that the surgeon will pump into my body during surgery to create room to work. Many people have very little pain afterwards. I'm getting the latest version of the band, made by Allergan/Inamed. While complications have been rare, this band has improvements designed to address those complications. I'm sorry this is so long but that's why I decided to let y'all know in an email. I didn't want you to confuse what I'm doing with gastric bypass surgery. I also wanted you to know what to expect when we're together for meals in the future. And I didn't want to have to repeat this "lecture" over and over! Love, Longhorn Feel free to use any part of my email if you find it helpful.

    July 2006 Band Crew

Congrats to everyone! I have not had the time to do my fills and I guess that is my big problem. I went from 220 to 172 in about 6 months and didn't get a fill until I started to gain back weight. The fill didn't really do much. I gained more weight and went up to 194. Granted, I only had 2 fills this whole time and I am in the VG band which I understand you have to be a little more aggressive. I was embarrassed to go back to the doctor b/c of the weight gain, so I lost 14 pounds in the last month on a low carb/low calorie diet. I have an appointment to get an adjustment next Friday and hopefully I can get back on track. Currently, I have 5 cc in the large VG band and have little restriction right now. So, hopefully I will be re-committing myself to the band once again next week. I wish I could be a success story (by now) like everyone else here!

    Birth Control options (Nuva Ring?)

I took ortho tri-cyclen and ortho tri-cyclen lo, and my doctors told me I could take the 'active' pills back to back (skip the 'sugar pills') and I don't have periods.. when I had surgery and was off 2 months, it was horrendous. I swapped to Yaz about 3 weeks ago, to see if it helps on my moodiness (thats why I was swapped to lo a couple years ago, but I still am a mess around TOM even if I'm not bleeding), and I am taking the 'active' pills back to back to keep from having periods again. I did try the depo shot a couple years ago and gained 30lbs in 1 month. My friend gained 80lbs from depo.. so I'm not a big advocate of it. Since I have been on B/C pills since I was 14 I can't ever tell if it's responsible for weight gain, and of course only time I was off was 2 months for lap-band and I was losing weight anyway! Once we have 2 kids, I'm having him get 'fixed' and I'll be off b/c, and I guess by then I'll be at my ideal and will never know
  7. I'm having a heck of a time figuring this out. I've never been on any form of birth control, DH is the only man I've been with that way and we've only gotten pregnant once, this past July and then I miscarried. Well, the social worker at my surgeon's office said I have to wait 18 months before TTC again after I get the band. :faint:I HATE that, but I'll do it just so everything turns out healthy. I can't figure out what to do. pills will NOT work for me - I'm terrible at remembering that stuff and I know I'll get pregnant if remembering everyday is up to me. I've been looking into the Nuvaring, but I'm really nervous to take any kind of birth control because of the weight-gain thing. Does anybody have the Nuva Ring and is still losing weight? I hate this kind of stuff. I haven't even seen a regular gyno since 2004 when I got fed up with all the infertility testing and quit going. I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum - I wasn't sure where to put it.
  8. I have a stretched pouch,, and have been UNFILLED FOR 2, GOING ON 3 MONTHS.. I WENT today for a fill and Dr. said I am still stretched, but NOT SLIPPED>..So I am just going to stay unfilled and really watch what I eat so I dont gain any more weight.. I will take some weight gain over ANOTHER SLIPPED BAND, MY COST TO FIX A SLIPPED BAND IS 5000. I am a happy camper today

    Gained all my weight back

Hi sandyray. I'm over 1.5 yrs out and what you say is so true - you definitely learn your body and how it reacts, what things mean, etc. -- all of which makes it "easy" to work around the band. Eating stuff aside, have you looked into finding a therapist, preferrably one who specializes in eating disorders? We all know the food itself is such a small part of the story. Maybe if you had help identifying your triggers and gains (psychological gains, not physical/weight gain), you'd be able to rediscover the magical "groove" that keeps us being good (compliant) bandsters.

    Eeepp?

I weighed myself in the morning and I had a hystorectomy so I cant have a period. I know some are thinking I gorged myself on halloween candy but I actually got rid of it all so I wouldnt eat it. I have not started any new meds. I wonder if I could have some water weight for some reason I hope thats what it is but thats ALOT of water. My butt doesnt even fit in my computer chair as well as it did before so I can really notice the weight gain. I wonder how many people have had a fill actually take several weeks to work and maybe mine will kick in soon or maybe I just need another fill.
  12. Hi! I haven't been banded. I am just doing research regarding LapBand. I weigh over 100 lbs. beyond my goal weight, but the gastric bypass is too invasive! I am 59, and not sure whether this is for me. Secondly, my husband has Medicare with Tricare for Life, and I am covered as his dependent (spouse) with Tricare Prime; I do not qualify for Medicare. I found Tricare Prime accepts referrals from Primary Care Physicians for GBS. However, I checked about 4 months ago about whether they approve for LapBand surgery, and was told "No, not at this time." Has anyone heard different as to whether they have reconsidered? I am curious. Does anyone know why Tricare Prime would pay for GBS and not LBS? Maybe because the procedure is still too new? I would also like to know why it is easier to exercise and eat right when one has the LBS, than before the surgery? Doesn't the motivation have to continue? Perhaps the LBS does motivate, when youhave gone that far? I know one thing... I have been too heavy, too long (about 8 years) and realize that soon I am prone to diabetes, sleep apnea, etc. as it runs in my family, both sides. My motivation to lose lasts about 1 week, then it fades. Could be because my husband can and does eat Desserts, or anything he desires, with no weight gain. Guess you might call that co-dependent, but I can't help it. When sweets are around, I weaken. I have not been a happy person for a long time now. This weight is depressing. I would hate to think that I would have to carry my two dogs around all day long, but my excess weight outweighs them! ...and they are BIG dogs! Any information about insurance, or advice about LBS will be appreciated! Thank you! Pam pamblundell@aol.com

    Pre-op Diet

MollyBrown, you are 44 years old . I wish Lap Band was available to me when I was 44 (now I am 55). You are making a great decision, because chances are, you would remain on the same roller coaster of weight gain and loss and accompanying misery for the next 10 years as I have done. I am keeping a Word document with all the good ideas I read in these posts, and I am surely going to check on the Isopure. My blood sugar plummets and I feel really bad on a liquid diet - plus those shake things gag me as well! You go girl! You got what it takes to push through. Only 5 more days to go!

  17. Sounds like we all have a touch of it eh? I have put on 3 pounds in the last 4-5 days and have a cruise I go on beginning this Friday. Not good. I do have the body bugg but I've even lost the interest to wear that secondary to the weight gain. We were told we would likely not lose and may gain weight during this time but I DO NOT like it. Last night I was eating some Golden spoon yogurt (20c/oz) and it was a sizable bowl (bout 8 oz). My husband goes by and says, "That's why you put on a pound". He was smiling but when I looked up at him, the smile melted away lol. He paid for this surgery so this gives me more feelings of pressure. I know that when I DO go back to work they will all expect me to be on my way to weight loss heaven. *sigh*. All these pity-pot feelings when I should be thanking God for all these blessings He's heaped on me. Just goes to show you, that no matter how much you have, you always want more. Thanks for your ear (eyes, I should say lol).
  18. Well they say this is the first stop on here so i guess i should start here! I have not been banded yet but have been trying to be for 2 yrs now. When my mom first heard of this surgery we went to a meeting (Seminar) to get the info on it. Well I waited to talk to the Dr afterwards and I told him that I have been on this continual cycle of getting bigger and bigger and wanted to get this surgery done and he pretty much looked at me and said no way you are a candidate for this procedure. That really pissed me off cause I have seen what weight gain is like in my mother and I am headed straight where she was (before her weight loss surgery) except I am like 5 in. shorter than she is so I carry it very very different! I am still on this band wagon (ha no pun intended) and doin my 6 month term trying to get BCBS to pay for my surgery! Still have 4 months to go. Any suggestions or just a pick me up would really help I am so miserable its not even funny I want to go get a loan and just pay for this damn thing myself!:help:

    Which embarrasses you more?

I picked 4..I really don't care what anyone thinks. My personal feelings is all that matters to me. Outside opinions can make your head get rather large...and I don't need any additional weight gain at this point..lol.
  20. Hi Everyone, I am 12 weeks pregnant and so happy to have found this thread! :whoo: This is my first pregnancy and I am trying to be careful to make sure that I don't go overboard on the weight gain. I am going to work very hard to only gain the recommended amount. I found this calculator that I thought would be good to share with the group since we are all focused on a healthy pregnancy. Weight Gain Calculator for pregnancy. Weight gain when pregnant. One of the things I read that I am very excited about is that the pregnancy weight is so much easier to lose with the help of our bands! Gawd, I love my band. I had a complete unfill at 8 weeks and it has been really hard not to go all out. I have to admit that I have not been eating very healthy (too much fast food and dining out) since my unfill. I'm inbetween my regular clothes and maternity clothes right now. So I decided to go to our outlets and stock up on some work clothes that are 2-3 times larger than my normal size. The Lane Bryant Outles has some very cute career and casual clothes that I am wearing now and I think they will work just as good on the 9 months down. Well, I wanted to introduce myself and say Hi. Here's to a very healthy and happy 9 months to all of us! :clap2:
  21. My band has been more trouble than it's worth from the very beginning. Right now I have unfilled as much as possible and will await insurance so I can get it removed all together. I've been diagnosed with PCOS, a condition which prohibits weight loss and actually involves weight gain for no apparent reason. Thank goodness I discovered the Atkins low carb plan of eating which is the only thing that has resulted in significant weight loss and it's easy to do and after the first two days there's no hunger involved. I've heard reknowned doctors talk about sugar as being as toxic as tobacco and I now believe it. For anyone who wants to jump start their metabolism, I suggest buying the Atkins New Diet Revolution book and trying this plan. It works for me.

    Want Band Removed, Too.....

No, doctors and providers don't tell you the truth about the actual weight loss. I lost about 75 lbs. initially (being able to eat only slush and mush, as I call it) and then started the tricky road to fills and unfills. Traveled to other states even to have fills done right and all this has cost a bundle along with the initial $15K I spent on the procedure. After that first weight loss, I started gaining for no apparent reason, still eating (or having food slide down my throat) small quantities. I went to a doctor and was diagnosed with PCOS, a condition that prevents weight loss and actually is responsible for weight gain even when eating only 1,000 calories per day and exercising. Fed up with the whole thing, I had as much of an unfill as is possible. Now I'm waiting till I have health insurance in hopes my coverage will include complete removal of the band. One bright note throughout this ordeal...Thanks to a suggestion from a PCOS support group member, I started on the Atkins program and have now started to lose weight. And, if I chew really well, I can keep most of the foods down. It seems that carbs are really the enemy to weight loss. So, if you feel you want the band out, get it out. It's worth $5,000 (if you can afford it which I can't right now) for peace of mind. I wish I had started Atkins BEFORE I got the banding done. Good luck.

I guess this is Bandster @*&%

I find it interesting how we were all so excited- and now we are all having such a time. I had lost 26 pounds in between pre-op and post op- now I have gained back 3 1/2 pounds. I am so mad that I don't even want to change my ticker- I cannot believe I have gained. I know we are just in healing stage and our body is trying to hold on to some calories now we are eating more substantial food- but for people that have fought our weight, gaining is so upsetting! I like many of you are getting hungry- but I know some of it is just head hunger. I need to start exercising and try to kick the weight loss in gear again. I am having a hard time getting in the Protein. So many things in the mushie stage are carbs. On Thursday I can start soft regular food and hopefully then I can increase the protein and drop most of the carbs. Ugh!!!!! :help:

    No one in Nov?

I had to lose some weight before surgery since mine is covered by my insurance 100%. I lost about 35lbs, then last week gained 5lbs. They will cancel for weight gain, not sure exactly why but since I am not self-pay I can't argue. To top it all off I am due to start my monthly cycle next week so I am praying not to have water gain on top of it. I am thinking about taking some Diuretics until then just to be safe. Any other suggesstions for quick weight loss for the 5lbs + the possible water gain???? :cry Congrats!!! Your surgery is almost here!!!!:clap2:

    Ok, I need some support!

Many times there is no weight loss and even weight gain befor a fill. Go to the Dr. you need a fill. You are not a failure! It may take several fills before you get good restriction I know it to be true. Keep your chin up. JP
