    Young and banded

bandedincincy: Yep, I even gained a few pounds once I started mushies. It's your body trying to hold on to itself because it believes you are starving it- which you are- technically. Just walk as much as possible to get exercise and just focus on healing and if you lose weight before your first fill- consider it "extra." Your fills are going to be what makes the difference! I need another one- badly- and I am still losing but only because I'm a gym rat... You're doing great!!!! Keep it up!
  2. Hi, in about 2 more days, i will be 1 year out a bandster. I know this has nothing to do with serving our country. But it does have a lot to do with serving ourselves. Our struggles, the ups and downs. Daily struggles, which anyone who doesn't have a weight issue, has no idea, what we go through. So, high five to all us, who have decided to accept the band, accept that we needed help to become more healthy. Continue to be strong, and stay strong. This is our own personal war which we fight for life. (please, do not be offended that i used Vet's Day to shout out to us all. That was not my intent. As for myself, I am a US Veteran and thought we should also recognize ourselves, today and everyday. Good luck everyone today and in the future.)
  3. My husband was against it too and we were cash pay, but I told him I refuse to live the rest of my life this way. Our daughter had gastric bypass a year ago and looks just beautiful. She didn't exercise at first either, but now that she's lost her weight, she has her energy back and started working out and doing Zumba to tone up. Lapband will force you to make life changes on eating. You will not regret it if you go ahead with the surgery. Oh by the way, I would have had the surgery with or without his approval. The mental aspect of losing your weight and being happy is very important.

This is about me, not you.

I am doing the surgery with a low BMI too. 19 days until surgery. I have told my mother and son. That's it. No one from work or anyone else. I have gained every year. Just 5 years ago I weighed 50 pounds less. I know the way I was coping was a losing battle. I am tired. I want my body back. I want to smile. I want to get dress and not put something back because it won't go over my thighs. I want to stop buying cheap clothes on sale because they fit. I want to go to the beach and wear a swimsuit. I want to actually look in the mirror instead of rushing past it because I don't like the reflection. You are not alone. This is about you. It is your turn. To weigh or not to weigh?

I had my first follow ups on October 2nd, and was suprised that I was down 30lbs from my highest weight! So glad I didn't stress with day in and day out by weighing! Never knew if I hit a plateu or not, it was a great feeling of BAM, see how much is gone! Now I'm going to try and wait until my 3 month follow ups (late in December) to see what happens then, it's been years of "weight on" and now it's "weight off"!!

To weigh or not to weigh?

I have weighed almost everyday for my entire adult life and written it down in a calendar that I keep. The last year following my sleeve surgery I wrote down my weight the same way everyday and it has helped me realize that stalls are not as long as they seem, that maybe I should be more careful with what I'm eating, and that my losses tend to happen in patterns. No one says you have to weigh yourself everyday and if you're not comfortable, don't! It's just a lot easier to see in the future the progress you've made, the rate that you've lost at, and to immediately recognize if you put on a few pounds. When I see I gained a pound, I immediately look at what I'm eating and make the changes. For me this works a lot better than not realizing I gained weight until my pants are too tight and then I have to lose the 10 I gained instead of just 1 or 2.
  7. That was really nice of him to think of you, but please don't drink that shake. It might be fine, but it also might give you a bad sugar rush and have even worse consequences. I ate a few bites of ice cream about a month out (birthday party), and it caused a dumping syndrome incident. I threw it up, started sweating and shaking and felt like I was dying - had to lay on the floor of the bathroom for about 30 minutes until I felt like my legs would hold me... I never tried that stuff again! Even if you don't have a bad reaction, you should not be eating anything with that much sugar in it so soon after surgery. You are trying to do a hard reset of your diet. Easing back into how you eat, what you eat and relearning to eat healthy. Milkshakes are not healthy at all, and you don't need to have them around until much, much later when your weight is stable and you can indulge yourself for special occasions. I know how hard this is, but you have to stay strong!
  8. As I've read, the more weight you lose or the longer you have your band, it should be losing restriction because the fat around your stomach is shrinking as you lose. I'm sorry you have to keep getting unfills. The whole needle process to me is not fun I've have a very finicky band. The only time she's consistent is in the mornings when I'm very tight. Otherwise, I have to take a very small bites when I start eating to see what mood my girl is in and then go from there. Sometimes, I can snack on a few pistachios and sometimes, I get to have two But, I'm not going to complain because it's helping me and I figure it's all apart of the process. I've really learned how to work with the lapband to where I can get what I needed done and not have any future bad episodes. But, it definitely took me a while to get there Julia
  9. Hi there. I think it's perfectly normal to feel that way...I did, for sure. I waffled back and forth many times between August, 2013 and my surgery date, November 14, 2013. Sometimes I thought, "Have you really tried hard enough?" "Can you lose the weight on your own?" "This is so drastic!" I'm now almost 8 months out and I realize, I wasn't going to be able to do it on my own. I tried multiple, multiple times. It's drastic, but I needed drastic! This was the best decision I could have made for me. I'm happy I wen thru with it. Only you can decide if you're ready - this is a life-changer. Do your research. Do some soul-searching. Continue to network with other sleevers. You'll know if it's right for you. Best of luck!
  10. Hola, Its amazing how we keep track of our banding date anniversary but I can't remember simple things like appointments. I have been thinking of all the things I can do now and all of the things I will be able to do at my one year bandiversary. Next summer, I will wear a sleeveless dress and a bathing suit in public. At least thats the goal. I will also get on the biggest coaster at 6 Flags and I will go horse back riding in June without killing the horse. Now that I am minus 68 pounds, I am able to run up and down the stairs, workout 3 -4 times a week without passing out and I am down 3 clothing sizes from a barely squeezing into a 28 to a 20-22-24. My next mini goal is to get to 247. This is what I weighed when I was 23 years old and went to Europe fifteen years ago. I am so looking forward to any weight under 200 and my biggest goal is to weight less than my husband who is 205. I believe I am realistic by aiming for a goal of 180. I won't be skinny by any stretch of the imagination, but I will be a size 13-14 and be able to shop in regular stores to buy my clothes and people will definitely not be staring at me because I am so huge. I have to admit that I look in the mirror and I do not really see myself as much thinner than before. I realize that I still have 86 more to go, but its a lot better than saying I need to lose 154 pounds!!! I like being an advocate for the lapband whereever I go. I am not afraid to tell people at the gym, the grocery store, at parties and even clients. I am not ashamed of being banded and I only hope that people who need support are lucky enough like me to find their way to this board and make friends that will help them like all of you have helped me. Thanks and hang in there with me for the next 86!!! Babs in TX 334/266/180 6/23/03 -68

My first week post of op

Good job! I'm so happy for you. I know that losing weight is such a good feeling and thank you for sharing your journey.
  12. I don't understand why the layers of clothing??? Wearing more clothes wont make u lose more real weight, just Water weight from dehydration. I admire ur ambition, but I think you're overdoing it, especially with the sauna too. Anyway, yeah you need to be careful of dehydration & electrolyte imbalances.
  13. Sounds like a variant of the body comp scales that use electrical impedance to derive the composition figures. That might take care of one of the weaknesses of the scales - namely that they mostly measure lower body composition since it measures between your feet. That means that apple shaped people (mostly men) who keep their weight high around their bellies tend to have understated fat % on the scales while those who are pear shaped (mostly women), holding their fat around their butts and thighs, tend to be overstated. That may be part of the correction that my Tanita does (or attempts to do) when it considers gender in its calculations. In any event, it's going down, and that's the important part. I'm down from about 42% to 24-25% by its measure now.
  14. Hi everyone, I attended the weight loss seminar in December and decided to wait till the first of the year to get the ball rolling. I had my first appointment with the NP and my PSY eval on January 10, 2011. I finally got a call yesterday that they were submitting everything to insurance and I will start my 4 WEEK Nutrition classes March 7, 2011. I am assuming my surgery will be the first or second week of April! I am scared but not about the surgery or the after part. I am afraid to be put under anesthesia. I HATE it. I know it is safe but I am still worried. My husband is Amazing and has stood by me while deciding on moving forward with Lap Band. He just wants me to be healthy. A little about me. I am originally from RI and moved to Ohio when my husband completed his NAVY commitment. I have tried WW, a program at our local YMCA (biggest loser) was a 8 week program I lost 8 pounds but now have regained that 8 plus another 9. I have been struggling with infertility for over 6 years now, and can only hope that Lap band will help with our journey to become parents. We are approved for an Open adoption also and are waiting for a birthmother to contact us. Look forward to making some new friends on here

    Bicycling Challenge

As I was saying, the roads in our area are extremely busy so I stick to the recreational trails. There are several good ones nearby. I have a gym membership and have done the spin class twice but that was last year, pre-surgery, so it was really hard for me and I felt like it was too much plus the music is too loud and not my taste. However, I'll give it another try and see if I like it better now that I down 72lbs. We have a trainer but I'm not real crazy about it cuz we put my husbands bike on it and I'm not comfortable. I will look into finding a group to ride with. That would make the roads seem a bit less scary to be riding in a group but I am concerned that I won't be able to keep up. Guess the only way to find out is to give it a try. I think my biggest road block is my fear of hills, going down them and losing control and wiping out. Going up is hard but you can always get off and walk if necc. Humiliating but safe. pre-surgery weight 325; surgery date 2/28/2013; surgery weight 307; 8 weeks past-op weight 281.4; 12 weeks post-op 274; 4 month post-op 266.2; 5 month post-op 262.6; 6 month post-op 253.2

First week - losing too much?

Keep in mind that not all of your initial losses are fat pounds. In the realm of bariatric surgery, fat loss is what matters. The nurses at the hospital or surgery center probably infused several bags of intravenous fluids into you before, during and after your procedure. These IV fluid bags weigh a substantial amount and make it appear as if you've gained/lost more than you truly have due to water weight. Also, you lose weight and volume as swelling decreases. Don't worry...this will probably be the last week you ever lose 16 pounds.
  18. I was 213 when I had my surgery. I am now 183 and I am struggling to get out the 180's. My goal weight is 125. Others who have had the surgery have lost their weight fast and I am struggling. I don't know if its because the meds I take cause weight gain, if I am not working out enough, or I stressing. I would love to meet others who have been through the same thing I am going through and know what they did to fix the problem. I will say I struggle to get enough Water in. I also don't go to the gym consistently but that will change because my son is going to start going with me to his 24 hour gym. I am on myfitness pal under mirandaperry2005. I am also on twitter under the name miranda perry. I am praying I can start to get this last 50 pounds off.

First week - losing too much?

I gained 3 lbs in hospital bc of the fluid retention from IV. By end of first week was down 15 lbs. it leveled out in week 2, been steady at .5-1lb per day as I move into week 3.
  20. Sometimes experimenting with new foods that are on plan is the only thing you can do. My hunger came back around month 5, but for some reason it's mostly only in the morning with the rare appearance at night. Very strange lol. And, I live in house where I'm the only one on a special diet and everyone else is eating cakes, pizza, cookies, donuts, pie, fast food, etc. and it's hard, but you just think about the weight you've lost and the amount you still have left to lose and then it's easy to say "no" or at least it is in my case. It just isn't worth it to go off plan when I'm so close to my goal weight! If you need to then sit your mom down and tell her that she isn't helping you by guiding you to the wrong foods and that you'd really like her support by NOT offering the wrong foods to you, that you love her, but you're trying really hard to keep on plan and you need her to help you out in that.

    Need Help Badly

Just go and get a fill. There's nothing to be afraid of, that's the way its SUPPOSED to work. As you loosen, you will eat more and your appetite increases. And you will get looser over time both from weight loss and evaporation. Its easy fixed.

    90-100!

I'll let you know 46 more to go for 90 lbs off.lol I got the band in Aug and down 44 lbs and when I don't want to go to the gym I sit down and look at my legs and stomach and cant believe what I have already done. I have to smile get my shoes on and off I go. I always feel emotionaly better when I go to the gym and I just do weights right now. You have to talk back to your brain when it tells you something shouldn't do like "just have one cookie" then say out loud "you know you wont stop at one" stuff like that. good luck and it is so much easier with the band and the fills amount in it..you just wont believe it...this time IS really different.
  24. Chancie, I was wondering about you and how you were doing and you look SO GOOD!! Amazing loss of weight and inches! Is your diet relaxed a little now and do you exercise? I just can't imagine losing all that in a year. I am so happy for you!
  25. Dr. say that because for a lot of sleeve patients the first half of your excess weight comes off very quickly. And easily. Speaking relatively. That doesn't mean there is no effort, but in the first six months your body is scrambling to gather nutrition and other resources from its storage! Most surgeons tell people to do a form of Adkins old diet, low-carb and high-Protein. People who get the surgery already know that sheer force of will/dieting is not a lifelong answer to healing or issues with food. Basically, I think the development of new better and healthier habits, a more intimate relationship with ourselves, and a recognition that there is no race to the finish line here because we will always need to be careful about our relationships with food. It takes more effort to get off that last 30%. I am just under a year out of surgery, and down over 100 pounds, with another 40 to go. Two thirds of my weight to practically fell off of me. This last third, I'll probably have to work for. But that work, will allow me to really step into the power of learning to take care of my body. There are a lot of people who have had the surgery that have gotten all of their extra weight off. All of it! Like anything, it's all about what you put into it. I know you can do it!
