Giving up sugar, soda, smokes, cocktails - all at once? I'm scared!
southernsoul replied to vsginkc's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
BAHAHAHAHA!!!! Wow, I needed a good belly laugh...thanks, jensjoy28! Vsginkc, I felt just like you do. My surgery date was June 19th. I stopped smoking back in March, then cut out sodas & a significant amount of carbs in April, & then even more carbs & caffeine & most alcohol in May. I knew if I waited until right before surgery, I would HATE having to give up everything all at the same time...and I knew that I would probably fail. There was no way I was going to jump through all these damn hoops & not give myself the best chance I could to be successful. Today, at a little over 6 weeks out, I feel great. I've lost 44 lbs so far, I'm exercising, not smoking, eating real food that is well prepared, and although I've had a very small amount of wine twice, I'm certainly not having a cocktail every day. Even if you have waited til the end to start giving the other stuff up, it CAN be done, and it will help you to feel so much better postop, which makes it harder to go back to our old ways later. Good luck to you! -
Any August Sleevers out there?
jultrim18 replied to sandygs's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey friends. Doing an update. I will be sleeved one year on August 17th. I have lost 95lbs. I am 5’2” 26 years old and weigh 138lbs. I am a size 8 in pants/dresses and a medium/small in shirts. I have saggy skin. Luckily it can be hidden with clothes. Photos are before and now. Problems: I am terrible with my water intake. I am always exhausted. I have zero energy. I don’t do pasta or breads: I tend to overdo it and end up vomiting. I am able to eat bad. That’s something I am scared of. Just like before the surgery, I am still constantly thinking about what I am going to put in my mouth. My brain will always have a fat soul. I have to use little plates or else I make my servings too large. I think I am content with my weight now. I need to start exercising. I do not exercise at all. It’s hard to eat well during the summer since I am a teacher. However, during the school year, I am strict with my diet on week days. I allow slip ups on the weekends. I still snack and drink alcohol, but that is just a weekend thing. Still trying to learn how to change my mindset. So beyond grateful for this surgery and my new life! -
How close do you follow your dr's Post Surgery plan?
jess9395 replied to dathvick's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Sorry, alcohol counts. -
I have had sleep problems for close to 8 years now. First PCP said it was related to hormone changes and prescribed Premarin, I declined and switched PCP's. Next one said it was probably hormone related and sent me for sleep studies, no surprise, diagnosed and have been on a CPaP--which helped somewhat. Next PCP said to take Lunesta and prescribed 10 mg. at night. I broke it in half and took it for almost a year and did great. He retired. Current PCP does not believe in ANY sleep medications and I am back down to being in bed 9+ hours, awakening 7-11 times a night, averaging 6 hours (and monitoring it with a FitBit). I have tried everything I know--no caffeine, no alcohol, Benadryl (100 mg. doesn't even faze me) and nothing works. Right after my sleeve surgery, I slept like a log. Now I am back to 6 hours. My current PCP is retiring so I will be finding another one soon. In the meantime, I have heard exercise helps and have to admit mine has not kicked enough into high gear, but am working on it. Any other suggestions??

So, mix a lifelong social anxiety with serious body issues and you get a recently sleeved 30 year old with near-zero dating experience. But I'm 30, lonely, looking pretty good, so I want to see if I can find somebody. How does dating work these days? What's it like to date after having surgery? How do you answer first-date questions like "Is that all you're eating" and "Why don't you drink alcohol?" Anyone have any advice in general? Thx.

1st Diet Visit
SorryNameTaken replied to TwinMom1221's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to do three visits and each one we discussed different things and I weighed in at each. My first visit was discussing goals they required us to meet before being cleared for surgery, like no caffeine, no alcohol, logging food, etc. We checked off which ones I already do and discussed how I would meet the other ones before my last weigh in. The other thing we really discussed was what a typical day of eating for me would be right now and what it'll look like after surgery. Nothing too scary! Have fun with it! Let us know how it goes 😃 -
Crying During Preop Diet...anyone?
readytogoforit replied to Rebecca Cain Salpacka's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am going to compare this to another time in my life where I had to make a big change. I did cry then, I had such a hard time coming to terms with the fact- not drinking alcohol ever again. As time went on I stopped looking at my whole life but one day at a time, sometimes one hour at a time. this is a big change you are making. it is a change that you are making, not your family. Everyone eats and you will be smelling food forever more! start to think about the changes you are going to experience once your body changes. It will be a bigger high than the smells of the family breakfast, really it will be much better!! I try not to think only of weight loss. I have experienced a great loss of inches since I started this life. I also can exercise & walk so well now. I don't get winded, I don't feel the same aches and pains. Is all of this worth it?? -
compliments that are not compliments....
sparkles1971 replied to devillynn's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This is the exact reason I have not. and will not tell anyone that I had WLS. I am not embarrassed at all, I actually proud that I made a decision to improve my life. I just hate the ignorance of people. I mean if I were an alcoholic and went to treatment, do you think people would be rude about it? No they would be supportive. Same isn't true for weight related issues and addictions to food. It's sad. I rather keep people guessing "what's she doing to look so fab"....really keep the gossip wheel turning. -
Where are all my May Sleevers?
sandirufophoto replied to sandirufophoto's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hellloooo all skinny people! Haven't been on here in forever! I'm jealous of everyone that's doing so well, so you've all inspired me to get moving again. I've definitely just let the weight fall off but now I've got to take it up a notch. Started at 242, lost 68 lbs, need to loose 30 more. But I'm so flabby, yuck! But it's okay because I can wear awesome skinny clothes and no one sees the flab. Problems- drinking alcohol Not exercising Eating crap, even though small bites. What keeps you going? -
My holy grail product for DRY skin!
OutsideMatchInside replied to Elode's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had one for years at the recommendation of my former esthetician and because I loved what my Sonicare has done for my teeth. I thought it was great, except my skin kept breaking out. I replaced the bush heads every 45 days (germ freak) and cleaned them daily with alcohol. They are rough on your face and I tried every single brush they made, including the sensitive skin one. My skin wasn't getting better. Clarisonic pays for a lot of product placement (most brands do), and they are very aggressive with it. It is beneficial to Sephora, and Ulta to push the Clarisonic with the brush costs, it is beneficial to them. I switched to the Foreo over a year ago. My skin improved immediately. It is soft and gentle on the face, more hygienic and no brushes to replace. A Foreo will pay for itself in the first year just off what Clarisonic brushes cost in a year. The only thing I use my Clarisonic for is exfoliation my elbows and knees, since I couldn't sell it on eBay. -
I found this very interesting. It talks about Ghrelin and how it affects both food and alcohol cravings https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-human-hunger-hormone-might-cure-alcoholism-3?via=newsletter&source=DDMorning

I was told by my doctor's office that you should be drinking absolutely no alcohol for at least 1 year.

My holy grail product for DRY skin!
BLERDgirl replied to Elode's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Agreed, but I would caution using any products that contain alcohol anywhere near my face or on products that go near your face. Alcohol is *really* bad for the skin. When I wash my brushes I am almost fanatical about rinsing them off since some brush cleaners can contain alcohol. As for break outs, the last one I had was maybe 3 years ago when I tried argon oil. -
I'm 8 months post op and I think I waited 6 months. Pre band, I could drink a whole bottle of Moscato and what seems like a gallon of margaritas, don't judge me...LOL! I can barely drink half a wineglass full of alcohol before I get tipsy now. Whatever you choose to drink, sip it slowly. I don't drink any alcohol now because I look like a lush after a few sips!!!

What are your rules/experiences with drinking alcohol after surgery
-
I had my first drink about 6 months after surgery - and in full transparency my surgeon recommends waiting at least a year so I was not following their guidelines! I had a vodka based mixed drink, tried to pick one without many 'mixers' to keep the sugar low. My experience was that after 1-2 sips I felt very tipsy. I sipped on that one drink for about an hour and didn't finish it - and I was hammered. It was as if I had 3-4 of that same drink (pre-surgery). So yes, it hits you very hard very fast. The other part I discovered was that it felt good... I have struggled with food addiction my whole life and now I don't have food to rely on - so the fact that the alcohol made me feel so happy so quickly scared the crap out of me. Transfer addiction is a very real thing. Now I drink very rarely (once every month or two) and I always make sure I have someone responsible with me and I limit it to one drink.

Hi-- Thanks for all your great suggestions! So far, I have: scheduled time off work started sampling sources of Protein including drinks spent time reading online threads purchased a new scale that is accurate! sorted out my closet/drawers by size in to totes purchased a "Wii Fit" and "Walk Away the Pounds" DVD picked out my loose clothes for surgery day purchased Gas-X strips, chewable Vitamins, liquid tylenol switched my prevacid presciption to a chewable What I NEED to do (that I know now): stock up on protein drinks/liquids/mushies switch over my anti-depressant as I know it is too big (I'm praying my voltarin is a size I can take!) practice eating differently start my high protein/low carb diet eliminate alcohol and soft drinks do my measurements/weigh in/pic Hmmm...that's all I can think of now. Enjoy your day!
-
yes but like many things the factors are dependent on many variables. Protein has calories per just like everything else. This is the breakdown Fat: 1 gram = 9 calories Protein: 1 gram = 4 calories Carbohydrates: 1 gram = 4 calories Alcohol: 1 gram = 7 calories

Drinking caffeine during 28-day VLCD - why not?
chele367 replied to bogglesauce's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Kaiser explained to us that it can cause ulcers in the stomach or your new pouch. That said, I am one year 4 months post op and drink coffee daily. Let me tell you the worst pain I felt before surgery was the fact I did not taper caffeine use. So after I get admitted for surgery a few hours go by then I have surgery the headache from no caffeine was worse than the surgery pain and the heavy painkillers did nothing for the headache. I was lucky that the nurse brought in regular tea w my tray. As hard as it was I sipped that tea and boom headache gone. That is my story. I am not sure how my pouch is holding up because I drink alcohol and coffee. I have lost nearly 150lbs feel great! This just proves if we do not overcome our addictions they stay and manifest in other ways than just eating too much. GO TO SUPPORT GROUPS!!! Our group disbanded and I have to drive 3 hrs to get to a support group in person. Attending really kept me on the straight and narrow. A reason why I am coming back to this site to not forget the journey, its not over. I still weigh everyday follow eating plan mostly but little by little the past sneaks back in like drinking from straws, drinking & eating wrong things. I was hardcore rule follower going into this accept for the giving up caffeine. Anyway that is a long response lol. Good luck! Feel free to ask anything my journey is an open book! -
ok so I'm post op day six and i've been struggling with the hydration issue. i can only seem to drink ice cold water with maybe a little apple juice for flavor, everything else hurts like mad or taste horrible. I've always been a big drinker lol (non alcohol of course) so my feelings are quite a bit hurt when former faves like powerade zero and even protein shakes (yea i actually liked those pre op) won't cooperate with my new and improved belly.

Do you count net carbs or all carbs?
Tiffykins replied to Becca's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A carb is a carb. For me it was/is a patience thing, plus I'm not sure I can fully trust manufacturers on fiber counts that would negate the carb intake(Mac on OH posted this back when I was in my losing stage, and it made sense then and now). I think it boils down to protein to carb ratio. My protein to carb ratio had to be a minimum of 4:1 meaning if the protein count didn't have at least 4 times the amount of carbs, it never went past my lips. I was especially cautious with carbs in protein bars/drinks. I'd see some protein bars had 15gr of protein, but had 25-40grams of carbs. Those carbs, plus the usual sugar alcohols in protein bars were my carb allowance for an entire day. I'd rather grab some beef jerky or cheese over those kind of bars. -
Hi, just thought I would pop in and update anyone who is trying to find an answer from HIGHMARK BLUE CROSS BLUE SHEILD ADMINISTRATOR FOR Alcoa plant in Ferndale Wa. I just got the big answer that in order to apply for the insurance, I would have to meet all the comorbidities (no problem) be over 50 bmi for the VSG, (no problem) ...AND a 6 month Dr, assisted monitored diet to prove how I lose weight!! Now, does it make sense they just payed 42.000 to replace my right hip due to osteoarthritis and if I don't get the weight off quickly, will end up having to do my left hip too? I can't beleive that none of the weight loss from Jenny Craig, weight watchers, nutrition center etc. count towards proof! If I was an alcoholic, drug addict, they would spend thousands helping with that issue. If I wanted viagra, yep they would cover that.... Hummmmm, guess that's how it goes!!

Back in the day..... Lolol! The old folk used to cut a straw from a straw broom & put a lil clean peice of it dabved in a bit of rubbing alcohol in ur ear piercing hole to keep em open. I did that for a nose piercing for a friend b4 surgery once...it worked! Try it. You'll only need it for about 3hrs.

Seriously Kaiser!?!
Was a humpty dumpty replied to lunarose's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This what I found.. I just don`t get Kaiser. NIH Requirements for Weight Loss Surgery The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a division of the US Department of Health and Human Services, is considered one of the world's foremost medical research centers. The NIH has set patient criteria for weight loss surgery which states that eligible patients should have a BMI of 40 or higher (morbidly obese) or a BMI of at least 35 with co-morbidities (obesity related health conditions) such as diabetes, sleep apnea, heart disease, high cholesterol, or hypertension (high blood pressure)and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.. Eligible patients must also have attempted and failed at previous weight loss efforts and need to pass a psychiatric evaluation to be recommended for weight loss surgery. -
I eat out with my friends regularly. I choose what will best fit my eating plan. I never eat all of it at the time. If I like it, I will bring the leftovers home and eat them over the next day or two. So, you may continue with date night . Check with your Dr. but alcohol is not recommended for about the first year and you won't be able to drink during meals anyway. That and you might not want the empty calories.
