    New to Bariatric Pal

Welcome Terri7225, there's a thread on the bypass forum for February 2018, you might even find a surgery twin there. At any rate you're among friends we all are fighting or have fought in the diet wars and are committed to better health and a longer lifespan. Bariatric Pal is a great resource, I've learned so,much from others experiences. Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app
  2. Sorry but your story and what you wrote doesn’t add up. Number one, anorexia nervosa is a mental condition that makes the person starve themselves because they think they are too fat even when they are thin. A doctor would not diagnose you with anorexia just because you are losing too much weight because of bariatric surgery. You haven’t posted anything regarding how you still think you are obese and you starving yourself to lose weight, so you aren’t anorexic. So your “doctor” story rings shady. Number 2. Just because you posted a before and after photo doesn’t prove that’s even you in the photo. The woman in the before photo is nowhere near 400 pounds, unless she’s 7 feet tall. Number 3. Sorry again but NOBODY can lose 280 pounds and not have any loose skin. Your story has too many holes and doesn’t seem legit.

    Left shoulder pain 4yrs later

Scans all went good. I went back to my bariatric dr. He had to loosen my band he said the left shoulder pain was due to the band hitting the diaphragm which was hitting a nerve shooting pain up my left side. I am feeling so much better now. Will still have some pain but not often and not near as painful. Thanks for asking
  4. But for those of you interested about no loose skin..so was my bariatric doctor..he said good genes were a main part and more than likely the vitamins I took as well so he wanted the list and how I took them as well.. I take them religiously every night. Started them a week before surgery.
  5. My bariatric doctor says I could be in the 1percentil that goes into anorexic mode....wondering if anyone else has ever heard of this? I wasn't informed this Could even happen!

    Disappearing lapbanders

Shannon, You should have a much higher possibility of success since you've lived the bariatric life for so long. Too many lap banders did poorly because they couldn't make the adjustment to eating the band way. There were a significant number of patients whose bodies just didn't accept the band too. Mostly esophageal incidents, slips, dilations and poor eating habits caused most of the incidents. But you should have expectations more in line with how we banders live. Good luck.

    Late December Sleevers?

Mine were ok with gummies. I take Women’s One a Day. I’m having a hard time getting my Effexor (anti-depressant) poll down. It’s a hard swallow. I did get the Biotin Melts from Bariatric Pal. They’re better than a regular vitamin.

    Hospital time sweetheart!

Every time Fluffy Chix and I read a successful, posting we sing "our day will come and we'll have everything" and it will, maybe it will be sweeter for the wait. Fluffy's gonna fly like an eagle and I'm gonna be a sleek trim cougar instead of the plump pussycat I am now. We are going to be victorious in the weight wars. We just need to be scheduled to be inscribed in the Bariatric Hall of Fame. May your post op be smooth . Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app
  9. Anyone else get one of these? We each got this weird stuffed bear with instructions on how to hold him against our bellies to brace for coughing. He's made to kind of fit against you and provide support. He's kinda fun....wears a little teeshirt that has illustrations of your procedure on it so you can show people with a visual. Weird, but kinda sweet. He has no butt. LOL And he's kinda ugly.

    Diminished mental capacity?

Confusion can be caused by a variety of problems. This website lists 80 causes. https://www.healthline.com/symptom/confusion The ones I would focus on are numbers: 1, 7, 27, 28 and 62. #1 Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Many people develop a type of hypoglycemia after bariatric surgery called reactive hypoglycemia. https://www.ridgeviewmedical.org/services/bariatric-weight-loss/enewsletter-articles/reactive-hypoglycemia-postgastric-bypass This can also occur if you were diabetic prior to surgery and did not reduce your prescription medicine after surgery. #7 Low blood pressure. If you had high blood pressure prior to surgery and were taking prescription medicine for that condition. This may be an indicator that you may need to come off some of that medicine. # 27 Hypokalemia (low potassium levels). Make sure you are taking vitamin/mineral supplements for potassium. # 28 Hyponatremia (low blood sodium). Make sure you are getting enough electrolytes. # 62 Beriberi (B1 deficiency). I would also lump B12 deficiency into this one. After Gastric Sleeve surgery, my surgeon recommended 100 mg. Thiamine (vitamin B1) weekly and 500 to 1000 micrograms sublingual B12 weekly. While you were in the hospital, you were probably given a shot of B12 which is good for one month. Since you are 4 weeks post-op that is probably wearing off and you need to begin taking B12 weekly. I am not a doctor, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. But those are the areas I would explore.

Looking for So. Cal Kaiser Newbies

Had you been with Kaiser for a while or was this your first Kaiser visit at all? I have been with Kaiser since Jan 2014 so they have a record of my weight. I've been consistently gaining 10-20 lbs yearly, regardless of how much I diet. I am thinking because they have a record of my weight, they won't just see me as a 40 bmi, and require 3 years of consistently being 40 or above. I am in Orange County, but I think the bariatric program I'd go to is in South Bay. Classes are in Orange.

    So it begins...

So today was my first visit to my Bariatric center. Overall it is a daunting but achievable road ahead. My insurance is requiring 3 months of a diet program with 4 classes a month during that time. A Nutritionist visit, a Psych visit and of course the surgeon visit. One thing that i like is that the center takes the stance that they are not going to pressure you to lose a certain amount during the diet, all of us are there because we have tried to diet and either it didn't work or the weight came back. So while they would like for us to lose weight the main goal is to not be gaining any weight and to put into practice what we learn in the classes, which unto itself should help us lose weight. Once all of that is done then the pre-approval is obtained and we do a one month long pre-surgery low calorie, high protein diet. So all in all it is looking like Mid May for me, unfortunately that is right before my 20th Wedding anniversary, but we will make it work somehow, my wife figures that if i am around for anniversary 25, 30 35, 40, 50, 60 and 75 then having a low toned one for 20 wont be a major issue. So It begins...time to buckle in and get on with the ride!

    Any January 2018 Sleevers?

Hi, the FB group is called 2018 Bariatric bad-asses. It's a closed group so you should be able to find it and ask to join. Let me know!
  14. I can't get my old username to work so I had to create a new account but I used to post on here a lot. A little background on me. I had the gastric sleeve in July 2014. I never felt I had the restriction I was supposed to from this surgery. When everyone else was posting they couldn't eat a whole egg or yogurt, I was thinking are they nuts. I could eat that and not feel any fullness at all. My starting weight was 290 and through tracking and monitoring everything I ate, my lowest I got down to was 210 and it took over a year to get there. And then I stopped and got stuck there for months and months. Nothing worked, decreasing calories, increasing calories, changing exercise, nothing. Every time I visited my doctor's office I mentioned my lack of restriction and their advise was "just keep eating your protein and tracking your food". Honestly, I felt like I was doing a weight watchers program again because the lack of restriction I had. Fast forward to now and I have regained 40 of the pounds I lost. For the most part, I'm still watching what I eat, but when you have the ability to consume almost a full entree when you go out to eat, it makes it hard to stay on the program. In the fall of 2016, I finally got my surgeon to check the size of my pouch and he stated it's enlarged and I now have a hernia too. After going through everything in 2016 for a revision, i found out my insurance had a one bariatric surgery per lifetime benefit and would't budge on approving it. At this point it was too late for me to switch to my husbands insurance for 2017. I now have finally switched to his insurance and hoping the revision can finally happen. My surgeon is stating he can either do a resleeve or switch me to a gastric bypass. I choose the sleeve because I didn't like the idea of all the vitamins that are required with the bypass surgery and some of the negative long-term effects I heard about. I'm now considering the bypass because I don't want to get resleeved and be back in the same situation a couple years from now. Has anyone had the sleeve to bypass revision for weight loss? I realize weight loss will be slower with a revision. Can you advise what kind of success you had after the revision or any issues you are having afterward? Thanks for all that reply. On another note, I'm not looking for "this is just a tool and just because you can eat a full entree doesn't mean you should" replies. If I had a sleeve that worked like it was supposed to, I probably wouldn't be posting this.

    November sleevers here

My bariatric surgeon has a little shop in their office, and they sell these (albeit rebranded). I tried the chocolate ones. I found them very delicious, but not at all filling. Given that I can only eat 900 calories a day at the stage I'm at, it didn't make much sense for me to regularly eat a fifth of my daily calories on something that wasn't filling at all. I wound up giving them to my diabetic mom,who also absolutely loves them! If you have the willpower to make them a "sometimes" food, id recommend giving them a try.

    1000 cal/day 2 weeks out

According to the old tried and true programs.....early calorie restriction is the best bet. You'll find a lot of folks who will say that's too much. HOWEVER... My group would say you're on target. We do 1000-1200 calories as soon as possible after surgery. I made it to 1000 calories per day at 3 weeks and have been happily eating 1000-1200 per day since. Newer long term research is showing people who eat 1000-1200 calories per day sooner in the process don't lose weight as fast, but do lose just as much weight over time as their calorie restricted counterparts. Additionally...there is evidence that they regain less of their lost weight over 10 years. In my group...you'd be congratulated. In another group...you'd be scolded. Bariatrics is an emerging field. I put a lot of thought into choosing my group. My deciding point....was that it's using a protocol developed by a research hospital I trust.

    Cigna-How much did you pay?

I am in Central Texas with Cedar Park Bariatrics. I just started the process and have to lose 12 pounds first, which is not bad. The best part is if I lose that, I don’t have to do the liver shrinking diet, lol.

    Vitamin Patches

VSGNEWGUY Thanks so much for your posting. Tonight I ordered the Tespo dispenser (spoken about in your post here) and the women's bariatric complete pods. It came to $147.00. I started to leave as I don't get paid until tomorrow but as I did a coupon for $50.00 off popped up and I couldn't resist. So I just got the dispenser for $49.99 instead of $99.00. My pods will be $48.00 a month and I pay a lot more than that for all the vitamins I have to take which will be covered with the three pods. If your interested in getting the system leave the site before you enter a credit card and you too might get a $50.00 coupon off too. If not there is a $30.00 off coupon that comes up when you first get to the site. However you can remove that coupon code and enter the $50.00 off one. I should get my items in 5 to 7 days. Hope my next labs due in Feb will be good.

I am super proud of you, Matt Good job I talked with my nurse @ Bariatric and she talked to the dietician and said that it's normal what i am going through. I'll trust her word for now I will leave now, I am going to the Y for my swim.. Matt, I'm glad you posted here. Thought about you yesterday, wondered how you were Good job on the weight loss Hoo rah! ^5
  20. I love your personality. I love it. I am laughing here, because you're so different than me in terms of preciseness I am not precise at all .. The .5.. Adorable Lol. What do you do for a living. You're cool. I like you Lol So, I got fromt he doctors today and low and behold, I'm at 307, 2 pounds higher than a week ago. I cried ( this was just an appointment with my primary, I have this weird rash on my arm, I'm okay) but she didnt' know what to think when I cried. I exclaimed. Me: It's pretty sad when you get VSG and you stall for two weeks, but oh no, you don't just stall, you gain and lose and gain. and then you're back where you started 2 weeks and 2 days prior 307 I got home and called my bariatric nurse, who didn't know what to tell me. She called our dietician who said it's "totally normal" and that she sees this all theh time, but to keep "doing what I'm doing" I am jealous of you lol but proud at the same time I will catch up, Tim and when I do, look out, it's ON lol (squinting my eyes) lol

    Struggling with aversion

Yes, I did develope an aversion to food. But mine began when I had Strictures. I ended up having 5 endoscopes with 4 dialations. Which started around my 3 week out from my RNY. I had my Rny on July 2, 2013. I had my first Endo in Nov, again in Dec, Jan 2014, July 2014 with my last done in Janof 2015. So I was afraid to eat or drink because I vomited so much. I could only keep Oatmeal, some protein drinks, cheese, some crackers and of all thing Cheetos. My Dr didn't say much about what I ate. He told me he didn't care if I ate Oatmeal 10 times a day I needed to get protein in. I did go for counceling but the 1st one didn't know how t deal with weight loss peeps at all. The Bariatric Nutrionist told me to eat every 1/2 hour I was awake, that set my anxiety thru the roof. It will get better, you have to work thru this. Your body needs everything you can give it to heal. You need protein to heal and get enough fluids in too. It doesn't take long to dehydrate. Good Luck KEEP ON KEEPING ON!!

    Observing others

I think most of us get over excited about WLS. Mostly its that high from the honeymoon phase. We understand what it's like to walk in the shoes of people that struggle with weight. We wish they knew how life changing this was. Your profile says pre-op. So if you are contemplating or had surgery, Weight loss and obesity issues may be on your mind more than normal. That may be why you are observing others around you more. I personally don't want to be the spokesperson for bariatrics. How many times have I heard from others that I needed to lose weight and it was so simple in their opinion. I think most of us understand it when friends make an off comment when they see our rapid weight loss. The hair grows back and life moves on. Healthy is what's important.
  23. I use Baritastic for my tracker and I find that it's pretty tailored to people who have had bariatric surgery. Also check with your program because they might offer support groups. Mine does 3 a month and I still try to attend at least once monthly. It really keeps me on track and I love chatting with people who are experiencing the same thing.

    Observing others

I find myself noticing others who might benefit from knowing more about bariatric surgery. I have kept my mouth shut thus far but it's getting harder when I see struggling, and our of breath young people. I want to tell them there is hope and answer, but in their place(where I was until I started my journey) would I have accepted a gentle suggestion? I have found 2 acqaintances who are post surgery but they didn't tell me of their plans. I'm afraid I asked one if she'd had cancer- well she was thinner and so was her hair- how was I gonna think? She is looking better now cause her is thickening back up, and most important she feels better about herself. Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app
