I deal with migraines, but they're not related to my weight loss surgery. I take Cambria powder (prescription from Neurologist) whenever I feel a migraine coming on. I think I'm getting one this morning. Yuck. They're debilitating.

Weight loss on liquid diet
rainyann replied to Roo2's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Consider yourself lucky... I came home from the hospital almost 10 pounds heavier than when I went in. IV fluid did me in... It took almost a week for me to lose it.... Be patient, the weight will come off -
Feeling hunger more @ 6 month post Op
Baconville replied to Moxy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Also between six and eight months the nerves around the pouch that signal hunger begin to completely heal and function again. It signals the end of that 'honeymoon' phase when you eat because it's part of your plan but not necessarily because you are hungry. By the way, I am just past 11 months and have lost weight every week up until now. I hit a stall about two weeks ago. I may have hit my bottom weight, but I am still working my plan until I know for sure that I am done. -
How high does your scale go? My cale went to 300 (I was high 2's) and my scale weight flucuated so much it was annoying. My husband got me a new scale goes up to 400 pounds. I said I'm losing weight not gaining, he said it will work better and it did. Same thing happens if you try to put a half of pound to 2 pounds on the scale. It's hard to get consistent accurate readings. I think it helps when the scale range is a lot larger than your weight. (lol or I have a better scale now b/c it only differs am to pm which is typical, not everytime I step on it by 1-12 pounds)

Some docs require a preop diet others not. Also it's patient specific. I didn't have to go on one but my husband had to do the 2 week liquid diet. Just depends on your start weight and how likely you have fatty liver. Consider it a detox opposed to a weight loss, trying to slim down that liver as much as possible. That can't be quantified through a scale. Even if your doctor says no diet is necessary, try to get yourself ready by making nutritious choices. If you are put on a diet, try not to focus on the #'s on the scale as much as being compliant (that's hard enough)

I have lost the SAME 80lbs 2 times in the past 8 years. I was a professional DANCER!! Not in "gentleman clubs" -but in musical theater. I have owned a dancing school for the past 18 years. About 9 years ago, I had to have ACL reconstruction on my knee. Now most people recover fully from this, but I NEVER did (it still gives me problems)- After the knee surgery, I decided I was offically old (35) and time to have a baby- got pregnant 1st try! Well, got put on bed rest at 7months and did nothing but eat. I had pre-eclampsia....and gained 60lbs!! I hit 200 when I delivered, and almost had a stroke-literally. After the baby, I thought I would go back to my normal- 140-150....well...guess what. I'm now 226 (at pre-op on tuesday- almost had another stroke-NOT litearlly-)- but WOW a 226lb dance teacher....not cute. I think the combo of cutting my excercise to nothing, and then being a "geriatic mom"-and now...I'm getting the lab band on Wed. July 5th, can't wait to get the help I need to finally get back to the PaulaA- I know, and like....:clap2:

Hi, I have just started actively looking into this procedure and if I do it, I will also be using Dr. Spivak. After looking at different alternatives, I think I would like the band since it seems less invasive, and has fewer complications. However, what made you decide to go with the band and not the bypass? I know someone who had the bypass and has lost A LOT of weight with no complications and NO sagging skin. My mom, on the otherhand, knows someone that had the bypass and has had to have heart surgery as a result of complications (infection and clot). I am planning on going to one of his seminars to learn more, but I would like to know a little from here before I go to that. I mean, if food cravings never go away, then what is the point of loosing the weight and then fighting food for the rest of your life. I absolutely hate being overweight and not being able to do the things I want to do with my children. My question is, if I could stop eating and lose weight on my own then I wouldn't need the surgery, right? So what is going to change so that I lose the pounds? Am I just UNABLE to eat? Is my stomach going to be full to the point where I don't WANT to eat anything else? What makes a good candidate? I would think that it is a safe bet that not 100% of people that get the surgery have medical issues that make them unable to lose the weight otherwise. I mean, I'm sure a vast majority of people are overweight because they love food sooo much that they just continue to eat regarless of the need. Is this surgery going to help with that "need" to eat? Is there counseling that goes along with this? I know there are a lot of question, but I really need to know if this is something I should consider to look into, or just go on another diet...

I just learned today that Unicare HMO has approved me! Last week, they sent a letter asking for documentation of 5 years of morbid obesity (no problem...) plus 18 months of supervised diet. This last is a problem, as they'd told me that I needed 12. I sent them a list of my bmi's taken from my doctor's records showing a 40 pound gain in 8 years (boo!) with the particular weight loss strategy in use at the time, and my sleep study report showing severe sleep apnea. And today they called to say I'm approved! :clap2: :omg: :biggrin1: My surgery was originally scheduled for yesterday, so I'm not sure when they'll do it. The sleep apnea poses a new complication...But at least I'm on my way.

mushy food and weight re-gain
rkwilliams1013 replied to zeniada's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The question is: Are you exercising? And if you are, are you doing it enough? My RD told me that when you advance your diet stages, that you should also increase your exercise a little to balance it all out. I'm sure a slight fluctuation in your weight when advancing from liquids to mushies is probably normal, because by-golly you're actually eating something! Dont stress it- keep doing what your supposed to do, and you will see it drop back down! -
Why Do People Try To Defeat You?
Helen the Cat replied to Paola's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Sunday evening, the 22nd Paola, Just a note to tell you that talking about food/cooking food/baking food/watching TV about food, etc does NOT always lead to failure. I LOVE to cook and bake. I almost ALWAYS bake something to take to work the three nights per week that I work. In recent weeks I have made Cookies (six or seven different kinds), cheese cake, brownies, Dutch Letters, Almond Pastry, and various different kinds of candy to take to work, just because I enjoy making it. I don't eat what I make, as I know I need to eat Protein FIRST! And then I don't have room for sweets. I have lost 98 pounds since my VGS surgery, and continue to loose. I intend to NEVER gain the weight back either!!! You have made a committment. So tell Dad to stand back and watch as you fulfill your committment as you travel your new journey. Never the less, I know it is extremely hard to have a parent criticize you or tear you down. I KNOW for a fact that my Dad loved me, but he was always brutally critical of me, especially my weight problem. Sadly, he did not live to see my success. You are in my thoughts and prayers! Love and Hugs and Prayers coming your way! Keep on Keeping on! Kathy D (alias Helen the Cat) -
Excited to Get This Show On the Road
kangamama replied to kangamama's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thank you everyone! I attended the information session yesterday and I'm feeling really good about all of this. The timeline is going to depend on how long it takes to drop 10%, and I am concerned about that -- I've been trying to lose 10% since 1995, only to continually lose a few pounds, and then gain a few more... sigh. But I really want this. The tool this will give me I really believe will be my solution, and I want it to work. -

With that being said sorry I haven't been on I've been bad and haven't been following my diet right because of everything going on in my life! I finally reached my 100 lb goal but then I gained 9 lbs how I have no idea unless its because of birth control! I have been around watching but been so busy because everything I haven't been able to active! I'm so sorry I've been MIA! -
I agree with Threetimesacharm. After surgery they start you out at 2 ounces per meal and over the next year and a half that slowly increases to 8. The most important things after RNY gastric bypass surgery is to meet the daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body will convert the store energy in your fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Exercise is equally important. You should be walking 30 minutes per day, or equivalent. The weight loss phase after surgery is relatively short and then you will gradually slide into the maintenance phase. Weight loss after surgery is achieved by meal volume control. If you want to maximize the weight loss achieved during the weight loss phase, you need to limit the volume of your meals. It is important to consume protein during the weight loss phase because your body will be damaged without it. Normally this is done using protein supplements such as Protein shakes. Since your meal volume is so small at the beginning there is no way to achieve your protein requirement without using supplements. The protein supplements is a separate requirement than the meal volume requirement. In other words it doesn't count against your total volume limit. So when you drink a Protein shake, it is not considered a meal. The liquid portion of the protein shake counts towards meeting your daily fluid requirement, the protein grams count towards your daily protein requirement but it doesn't count towards your meal limit. Since you are mixing in the protein powder into your meal, it seems like it is a little hard to figure meal volume. So what I see is 9 A.M. meal (only 1/2 your meal volume requirement) 10 A.M. protein (good) 12:30 A.M. meal (2-3 ounces over your meal volume requirement) 3:30 P.M. protein (good, in the form of milk) 4:30 P.M. meal (3 ounces over your meal volume requirement) 6:00 P.M. meal (this is interesting because this could be considered your fourth meal of the day. So overall during the day you have exceeded your meal volume requirement by 8-9 ounces.)

I would get my BMR and RMR tested. If you have been eating like this for the past 6 months and you haven't gained, it looks like you have found your maintenance lvl. If you are still loosing, you are below, if you are gaining, you are above. Adjust accordingly. I'm a 5ft 5inch female and my RMR, what I need to eat to maintain, is just over 2000kcal. (tested) There are no set maintenance lvl, it's all individual. If you are worried you are eating too much, get it tested.
-
So I added up your calories being as conservative as possible and you are above your maintenance level. If you aren't working out to remove the overage.... you will gain. Maybe you should go back to documenting everything for a week or two to see where you are really at. If you need to.... adjust accordingly. At your current rate (without exercise) you will put on 1 pound every week and a half. Im guessing you are exercising. So as long as you burn 2100 calories (ish) a week you are in great shape. Congrats!!!! 5' 5" HW: 259 CW: 235 GOAL: Healthy and hard 140-ish?

Best advice, nip it in the bud now. Go see your surgeon and nutritionist, consider counseling to deal with that aspect. I let mine slide and I gained. It is so much harder to take it off when you are out of the honeymoon phase. You can do do this!!
-
While I haven't had my procedure yet, I can relate to the obsessing over food. Is your dietician or surgeon/doctor able to give any insight? Hopefully those who have had WLS will chime in with their experiences once they reached goal weight and start maintenance.

3 months post op nausea
DaisyChainOz replied to Bastian's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wowsers babe, I am sure it does suck the life out of the universe, but sounds like your medical team are onto it, so stay strong! Awesome re the weight loss, and aren't you clever to be able to alter your own clothes!! haha.. not something I would attempt having zero talent with sewing lol, but great idea and you will get to it when you can. Right now you need to get well and stay positive I wonder if the surgery triggered this or if it was going to come on now anyway? -
I am currently doing my 6 month physician supervised diet. You need to see your doctor before you start the diet and each month during it for documentation. Make sure they write down that this is why you saw them. The insurance will want to see all vitals and your weight on the paperwork too. At the end you will submit seven visits to your insurance. Cigna paid for my Psych Eval and my Nutritionist visit. The nutritionist is complicated though, they have to bill it a certain way for them to pay for it though. I had a problem at first and when I explained that it was a prerequisit for the surgery they approved it. Don't let the customer service people throw you off track. I have called them a dozen times to verify my insurance to make sure things are covered and that I am doing this right and each time I call I get a different answer. So you need to ask for their policy for bariatric surgery in writing and read it yourself. As far as weight loss during the diet. My surgeon requires us to lose 10% before surgery so that is my goal during this diet. I have asked every person I have spoken to at the sugeon's office and the nutritionists office and they all have said that even if you lose during your diet the insurance will look at your starting weight and BMI from your first surgeon's visit. Some insurances even require you to lose or they won't approve you. I don't think cigna has they rule though. Good Luck all!!!

Hi I also will have Cigna ppo as of April 1st, I have a bmi of 50 with comorbidities such as high blood pressure, sleep apnea ( sleep with cpap) gerd, clogging arteries of legs, and risk of cardiac disease CRP levels elevated, i wonder what my chances are? Do they make everyone do the 6 mo dr supervised diet? And what if you loose weight, does that mean they wont approve you sine you can do it on your own? Thanks Stacey

Need Advice, please help.
kwright replied to chargers56's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Good luck with Kaiser in San Diego. I went to their information seminar in May and decided to go with my other insurance. While I was at the seminar I learned that you had to have a bmi of 50 which clearly I didn't have and that you have to go through their weight loss program which takes about a year. Back in May they didn't have a contract signed yet with Pacific Bariatric since their surgeons didn't do lapband at that time. Best of luck to you and hopefully the process doesn't take as long.
