Will you answer 2 pre-surgery questions for me?
labwalker replied to FourthGradeTeacher's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As B52 noted, the scars heal and I only have two that show after two years. If anyone asks about the two small ones that remain, I'd tell them the other guy looks worse... LOL! I told very few people about my surgery. Besides gossip, I didn't want to be judged as a failure if the surgery failed, or if I had lost weight having folks think that I should have "done it on my own." If you don't feel comfortable sharing your story, you shouldn't feel obligated to do so. Just as a comparison, my surgery ran close to $37,000 when all of the dust settled. That was for the presurgery visits, evaluations, hospital charges, and the first three fills. Connecticut is a very expensive state for WLS. Fortunately, my insurance covered 95% of the charges. -
It took about 5-6 days for me, but I found that they more I moved the better I felt. Are you walking a litte bit everyday? Your pain should be subsiding this week!

About 6 or 7 hours a week here. About 5 hours resistance (weights) and another 1-2 hours a week in HIIT cardio (3 to 4 half hour sessions).

Horrible bathroom problems
linziyo replied to victoriak419's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Yes, contact your doctor! There is never any harm in calling and a week without any BM is plenty long enough. -
I have been banded 6 weeks and have a VLog on youtube. YouTube - JewelJolyn's Channel Good idea to put it in my sig.

I'm one week post op and the surgical glue is wearing off. Question is...after every shower one of my incisions begins to bleed a little. Nothing major just wondering if this is normal. This was my first surgery ever so I know nothing!

I am 6 weeks out and still have bloating sometimes. It may be something we have to deal with. Sorry
-
I would call your surgeon's office & just ask. I don't think it should after a week, but you never know. Better safe than sorry. I never had that. Good luck

I'm at home (day 6) and have been told to wear the super sexy compression socks. They should be very easy to get hold of as older people tend to wear them often, and people wear them for flights and post surgery all the time. I have to wear for 2 weeks at minimum while I sleep Also shots every day for 2 weeks.

Yeah, I agree with not self-medicating. I also had the cuffs on from right before surgery until I was discharged. I also had meds in the hospital to thin my blood. And finally, because is had another surgery 8 weeks prior, I had to give myself shots in my tummy for 10 days after I got out of the hospital. That pretty much cured me of my needle phobia. Anyway, I digress. Talk to your surgeon. Blood clots are a risk, but not a huge one unless you have other things like I did that make you a higher risk. If you are, there are things your doctor can do.

Pre-op testing
tobhappy&healthy replied to Sugarnspice's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surg is 6/26.. My pre-op testing included: Blood tests Arterial blood gases Stool sample (for h-pylori) Ekg Chest X-ray Nutrition consult Psych evaluation Upper endoscopy Cardiac clearance-echocardiogram After all that then repeat blood test & ekg for pre-admission testing (approx 1 week before surg) Hope this was helpful. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
I can tell you what I had to do, you may or may not need to do all of these. 1. Cardiac clearance - started with consult with a cardiologist and an ECG. Even though my ECG was normal, because of my high BMI and the fact that I wasn't very physically active, he also wanted an echocardiogram and a stress test before granting clearance (these two tests required another visit but were done together). 2. chest xray, abdominal ultrasound and upper GI (Barium swallow test) - all three done in one visit. My ultrasound report indicated a possible aortic aneurysm but didn't indicate size so my surgeon had me get an angiogram and consult with a vascular surgeon as follow up. another appointment for the angiogram and fortunately the vascular surgeon had an open slot right after my angiogram test in the same building so just one trip. Fortunately no aneurysm. 3. blood work - lots of tests so I think it was 5 or 6 vials of blood. my TSH came back high indicating possible thyroid problem so I had to have another blood draw to test specific thyroid function - fortunately those came back normal. 4. consult with pulmonogist, did a lung capacity test in that visit and he put in the request for the required sleep study. did the sleep study in the clinic a couple weeks later (had to get insurance pre-authorization and find an open slot in the clinic) and then the pulmonogist reviewed the report and made his recommendation. 5. psych evaluation 6. Hematologist consult - only required because of my very high BMI - surgeons protocol is to recommend insertion of an IVC filter to catch blood clots (and prevent possible PE) for patients with BMI over 50. My research on the filters didn't have me convinced that was a good option, so he sent me to a hematologist to go through my full history and see if and IVC filter was really necessary. Hematologist agreed with me and i'll just be doing lovanox injections twice a day for a couple weeks after surgery instead. Note: this was only required because of my very high BMI and me not automatically agreeing to the IVC filter. So quite a bit and one test had a tendency to uncover something that required additional testing. So I recommend that once you get your scripts for the testing - start scheduling immediately in case you need additional follow up tests!

So I am here @ the dr office 1 week and a day before my surgery and I just feel like I am all over the place! I watched the video with all of the risks n possible complication that can go on during or after surgery, n although the risks were all rare it got me thinking.... "What have I gotten myself into?!! Then I hve to tke a breath n regroup!! Ok, I'm back!! Spoke to the nurse n that part of it was not too bad, now I am waiting to speak to the surgeon. I'm glad I took the day off because its a lot to process all @once!! I'm just really ready for this to b over... #NoTurningBackNow

3-4 Days per week for working out is a great start. However... if you notice you're not sweating or breathing heavy during your cardio sessions then it's definitely time to bump it up. Longer, stronger, more often... on the flipside, if you are hurting too much or can't handle it then take it down a notch. Don't let this discourage you! Getting fit takes time and lots of patience. Rule #1 for all workouts though is to stay hydrated! Rule #2 is take breaks in between if you have to. Good things can't be rushed. Rule #3 is to go at a pace where your pulse is raised and you're sweating, but not in pain. I workout 6x per week and it seems to be around 2+ hours per day. I love it though! I do not advise this for anyone who is just starting out. I've been working out my whole life. I can also do far more intense workouts now that I'm not so heavy too. It's awesome!!

6 days a week and sometimes twice a day for an average of 90 minutes, but I've been in the military my entire adult life. You are doing great, we should strive to workout most days of the week. I agree with Lilmissdiva on hydration and starting off slow.

Y'know that saying, "You can't keep a good woman down"? Well I am woman, hear me roar! Only my roar goes sorta like "Grrrr...hic...rrrrrr" I started the process of getting approved for RNY 2.5 years ago and everything was going really well. No sleep apnea? Check!! Crazy as a loon? Check, but well medicated. *smug smile*. Meet all of the requirements? Check!! I'm morbidly obese, but generally pretty healthy. Then I was waiting for the final appointment when all heck broke loose. Last October, I started peeing blood. Tiny amount, but blood nevertheless. I didn't eat asparagus, and it couldn't be a UTI, because I was just finishing antibiotics for a chest cough. Hmmmmmm..... I work in a hospital, so got my lil' butt down to emerg, peed in a cup, and went back to work. The next day, WHAM! ultrasound...then WHAM...cystoscopy (camera to look up into my bladder). Then two weeks later...THUD!!!!! I have aggressive papillary non invasive bladder cancer. Like, what the heck??? I'm only 39 and I don't smoke, and other than being obese, I'm the picture of perfect health!! We had the tumor removed, and I'm on a three year regimen of treatments called BCG and I examine the toilet bowl every single damn time I pee now. I'm like a toddler who looks at her accomplishments in the bathroom with pride. Look ma!! Yellow pee!!! I had to have a follow up appointment with the WLS surgeon. He told me that I need to be cancer free for two years before weight loss surgery. I was devastated...this kind of cancer has 80 percent chance of coming back...the oncologist wants me to lose weight so that he can take out the bladder and make me a new one from my lower intestine called a 'neo-bladder'. So I went running to my oncologist, he had an intense discussion with the WLS doc and the new game plan is not to have an RNY, but to go ahead with a sleeve. That way there will be enough guts for the neo bladder. So now, I'm back on track. Final hurdles have been jumped. Waiting for the call to book me for surgery. It should be sometime soon...before August. I can't wait! It's already been a long road, and it's going to be an even longer road ahead of me But I take it one day at a time, and am grateful for my daily gifts. And for pee. Yellow pee.

I promised to let you know when the surgery is scheduled..I got the news this week. August 18th!! OK...now I'm scared. But it's a happy scared. One other bump has happened since I started this thread. I lost my hearing due to a virus. I was always Deaf in one ear, but got along in life quite well. But now the hearing in my good ear is gone, and we're not too sure if it will come back. Currently on a regimin of prednisone and prayers. Seriously, I'm like 'holy crap' how much can one person take? Amazingly, this girl can take a lot. I'm still standing. I'm still roaring. I'm still dancing to my own music and living each day as the gift that it's meant to be. My work has been so supportive and I'm still working. Going on week three with no hearing, but coping amazingly well with reading lips, scribbling notes, and making phone calls through a relay service for the Deaf. I got this....I can do this....what else ya got? Throw it at me. Grrrrrr...hic....rrrrrrr

Nerves are norm. Mine was a week ago and I felt the same. Back to work today, down 11 pounds in one week and feel better then I have in years! U will do great!!

I take a bit of Protein before a workout for a little energy boost, then after for recovery. BUT I never confuse eating along with exercising. My goal has always been to burn fat and glycogen, not replenish it. I'm currently working out 2 hrs a day at 5:30am, 5 days a week. Run for 30 minutes, then weights, finished with 20-30 minutes on the elliptical. 30 minutes in the sauna, then 15 minutes in the whirlpool. I go through 32 oz's of Water during this period. Did I mention I am 60 years old and a heart attack survivor?

Wow!!!! That's great all this exercise. I'm actually enjoying it but feel like I'm lacking energy. We are doing three body parts per night plus 20 min hardcore cardio. Needless to say, I am tired!

I had my surgery consult last week and the surgeon said that it would be placed below my breast bone because it was easier to get to for the fills.
