I went to my pre-op appt. with my surgeon this week and found out that my upper GI showed a hiatal hernia. My surgeon suggested that I consider changing to the RNY because of this. I have never had problems from reflux that I know of so this surprised me to find out about the hernia. My surgeon is concerned that I may develop reflux problems with the VSG procedure and that is why he thinks I may do better with the RNY. Now I am 1 1/2 weeks from my surgery day and have this major decision to make! I would have had the RNY 8 years ago if my insurance would have covered it. And I know several co-workers who have had the RNY and are doing well. (Except some have major gas issues that I was hoping to avoid due to my job as a nurse.) Once I found out about the VSG procedure and found out my new insurance covers these procedures, I have been working on getting the sleeve since last January. I really thought this was the answer for me.... now I am not so sure. Any words of wisdom out there for me??

I am 7 weeks out from VSG surgery and I had a hernia repair during surgery that I did not know anything about either. No problems at all thus far. There are meds to take for reflux. RNY is too invasive IMO. Good luck to you.

Just starting- Tricare in San Diego
pwoods5015 replied to yepitskelly's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have Tricare Prime and you do need a referral or it becomes Point of Service, which is high dollar out of pocket. Oh, and be advised that Tricare does not approve referrals to Dr Horgan, but does for his partner Dr Jacobsen - not sure why. As best I can tell, insurance patients are at the bottom of the list for dates of surgery - I have had an approval for surgery for almost 2 weeks and still have no idea when I MIGHT be scheduled for surgery. I am at least trying to find out if it will be before the end of the year as I have to plan for my spending account. And I still have no idea how much I will be out of pocket. So, be advised getting the referral is half the battle. -

The same happened to me. I got banded in January of this year and I have only had one fill which was in March. About a month ago, I woke up one morning and I could tell that something had changed, but wasn't in any pain or discomfort. I drank my morning coffee, etc. but by the end of the day I couldn't even keep water down. The next day was the same, but by the third day I could could eat soup and drink liquids. This lasted for about two weeks and then it went back to normal. I still havn't had to have another fill, but I can eat small meals and feel full for a few hours. I was like you and didn't want to get an unfill for fear that the weight loss wouldn't continue. I have no idea what caused this. I'm not sure if you have the same problem as I, but if it keeps going maybe you should call the doctor. Just wanted to let you know you aren't the only one this has happened to.

I'm so over this liquid post-op diet already and I still have another week to go! The thing I'm looking forward to most on the next stage is - an egg :-) -
I need some help with excercise! I am eight weeks out and down 46 pounds. My clothes are sliding right off- it's great! I am on my feet most of the day and try for 10K steps a day. My problem is my stomach is weak. In the past five years I have had a number of health issues, many requiring surgery ( total abdominal hysterectomy, breast cancer, chemo port surgeries, lab band in/lap band out, large incisional hernia repair, and now "my sleeve.") What have you veterans done to strengthen your stomach muscles? I need to start gently...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

1 month post-op and more tired now
mamasanch replied to Slim2016's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I'm 5 weeks out. The last 5 days I have had more energy and feel normal again. Get the protien in whatever way you can. Congrats to all of us for making a commitment and changing our lives. I am very excited and going to a nutrition class next week to get all the tools I need to be successful. Surgery was 10/9. Total lost with 12 days preop is 31 pounds total. I also use myfitnesspal to log in all foods and exercise. It is the easiest tool and has almost all foods I eat in there logs calories and protien so you can get all nutrition in. -

Oh my, I said goodbye to Sprite May 30th, the day before my pre op diet. Nope, no straws, I drink Water from a water bottle. I haven't discussed the pain and gas feeling but he knows about me feeling nauseated. I see him this week. He thinks he has me close if not in the green zone. I have a 10cc band and had 5cc's in there and was throwing up all of the time and getting things stuck so went in last month for an unfill just .25cc's and so far smooth sailing.

I had my band last year... so glad I found this site!
Coco replied to femme35mm's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Femme, It is sometimes very difficult to get your head around the band. I found after numerous trips to the bathroom :wink2: that the only way to eat is to take small bites and then chew and chew and chew and then chew some more. I find that once I take the first three fork/spoonfulls the rest is easy. Before I had the band I used to virtually inhale my food so it was a difficult road to begin with. As for the drinking whilst eating, sorry but thats a big no no. The thing is you will dilute your food and push it through the band quicker than it should go down and as a result you will be hungry more quickly and will not be satisfied for as long as you should be. Do try to eat normal foods just much slower than ever before and don't drink fluids for half an hour before your meals and for 2 hrs after. The optimum time to lose the weight is within the first two years of being banded. Good luck with your journey and keep posting we are here for you.:wink2: -
Hello Everyone, Went to have UGI done yesterday and was informed that my upper esophagus may be stretched! I have had my band a little over a year now and have only vomitted approx. 4 times. I am waiting to hear from my physician to see what he has to say! I am so upset. The NP called and asked me how was I doing with my reflux, I told her I was not aware of having any! She probably thought, "Excuse me!" LOL I haven't had any reflux to my knowledge! I did have a few weeks ago the stomach flu and it is what brought me to the point of having the UGI done! Any suggestions of what I have forward to look for or what is in my near future? Thanks everyone!

You are doing so well. Congrats!!!! I plan to (when I get to my goal) to throw out everything that has gotten too big. I don't want any old clothes hanging around for me to slip back into. I figure if I finally get a new wardrobe for the "new me" that I will only have those clothes and that will keep me from gaining. As I weigh myself to keep track it will be in the back of my mind that if I am not careful, I will be going to work naked. That thought alone is the impetus I need to keep on track. I also think that with only one wardrobe if I start to fall "off the diet wagon" and my clothes start feeling tight, that will be my signal to stop eating for a while and do a liquid week. I have been fat since I was six years old and this is it for me ladies. No More.

Hello... July 10th is my banding date!

Hey your surgery is one day before mine :clap2:, yaaaay. My Dr. has me on a 2 week pre-op all liquid with 1 low fat meal per day. -
New to forum and interested in getting band
Vicki J replied to Nikki07's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
It doesn't surprise me that it can take 9 months to a year. From what I've heard the processes are different between the two. When they told me 3 to 6 months I thought they had to be being careful about getting people's hopes up. I didn't even hear about my next appointments for 4 or 5 weeks after orientation. Then they were 4 weeks away. -
The guy I went on a date with this week wants to go out again on Monday night. He wants to see me sooner, but due to his and my schedule, that was the first day we both had available. He originally suggested going skating (roller) but I told him I thought we should get to know each other better before he sees me fall on my ass! We ended up agreeing to go out and shoot pool--which I'm pretty good at. I've been talking to him online through instant messenger and the more we talk, the more we realize how much we have in common. He even dropped hints that he wants to kiss me! I'm taking it slow and seeing if we get along as friends first, but I have to say I haven't connected with someone so soon..umm,..ever!
