Pre-Op Struggling
cheryl o replied to AmazonSleeved's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
my preop last day is tomorrow, and ill be honest with you, i cheated. I started tursday, ive been having chicken, ground beef, and burger patty. Also had soda crackers. each day i had one item, an item with no carbs, and only water, plus everything else required. And guess what i still lost weight. im down 7 lbs today. And yes it gets better, today im not hungry at all, but did have chicken and romaine lettuce. Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app -
The three week stall others mentioned is very common. Just stick to your plan and the weight loss will pickup. I never had any problem drinking liquids either. I tried to slow down but if I drink without thinking about it I realize I can drink as much as i did pre surgery.

Pre-Op Struggling
ShoppGirl replied to AmazonSleeved's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The pre op diet was the hardest part for me too. The liquid and purée phase aren’t fun but at least you are losing weight and most are not hungry so it’s not as bad. Just try to occupy your mind with other things and hang in there. It is definitely worth it. -
I’m officially 80lbs down 6 months out. I feel pretty great. I wonder if I’m the only one who doesn’t feel like a smaller person yet even after all the weight loss. It’s been a strange but good experience.

1) you've hit the infamous three week stall. Happens to probably 90% of us. Just stick to your program and stay off the scale for a few days. It'll eventually break and you'll be on your way again. It usually lasts 1-3 weeks (that "gain" is likely just water weight) 2) yes - fluids go right through you. Some people have a hard time getting them down, but I never did. I didn't drink any differently than I did before surgery. Your stomach will tell you if you're going too fast.

I think these are the best wins; when we can go do "real life" and still remain aware and make good choices. Great weight loss and congratulations!

Dear All i have 3 weeks post op. Two Questions for the community: 1- I have started losing a lot of weight in the first two weeks and now have actually gained some even though my food intake is still in the liquid phase. Is this normal, read a lot and its apparently normal. 2- Water consumption, is it normal that fluids flow right through me, i am to gulp a lot of water circa a 500 ml bottle at once and not feel any pain. I just had a 200 ml Protein Shake, 7 oz , of liquid alongside 6 oz(170ml) of light very liquid Soup and about 400ml(13.5 oz)of water and nothing no pain no feeling of vomiting no pain....is that normal?

Hi. I had my gastric bypass July 2019 and also struggling. I’m older than you (62) and I have gained back 30 pounds after losing 140 pounds. It can be overwhelming.

I’ll be 5 months post Surgery tomorrow. .8 shy of 60lbs lost…which when I first talked to my surgeon I said I’d be happy just losing 60lbs. I am comfortable in my body again, but the weight loss will continue. New goal - get to a “healthy” BMI. I made it thru a 2 week vacation at Walt Disney World …where I didn’t lose, came home up a measly 0.6lbs. Lost 8.2 in the 3 weeks since I got home. So that’s a positive. The trip did not derail my progress.

I must say, however, the weight loss is helping a great deal although I am too weak right now to work out a lot, still walking. No more weight lifting now they said as this thing could be some type of tear in my chest wall that has leaked blood & fluid into & around my lung. Max weight 287 SW 277 CW 221 surg 5/5

I had my Gastric Bypass surgery on October 6th. I was experiencing the three-week stall myself - just couldn't lose an ounce. Stepped on the scale this a.m. and I am down 2 lbs 4 oz! I knew about the stall and I just kept with the plan. It's now broken and I'm losing weight again! If I can encourage you in any way, I hope you just stick with the plan. Leave the scale alone for a week or two. You will be happy when you see that you've broken the stall! 😀

This is literally exactly how I am doing my goals. I have had several DXA scans (there's a place here called BodySpec that charges something like $45, no insurance) because despite being obese I am also extremely muscular. I took the lowest of the lean body mass results (knowing that I would lose some muscle during this weight loss process), added 15% body fat, and voilà, 240 lbs. goal. It confused my surgeon at first but he was supportive.

Help. What have you done to break stalls early in and slow losing
The Greater Fool replied to ctsaunde2's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
When I had surgery I was so large that only my surgeon had a scale on which I could weigh. As a result I could only weigh myself at monthly follow-up appointments. This turned out to be a blessing in several ways: Like most everyone else I'm sure I had stalls but I never saw them; I was forced to trust my plan; I was never tempted to "change it up" because of a number on a scale; Once I got to a weight that allowed me to weigh on a home scale I weighed myself several times that first day. Hey, it was the first time I could do such a thing in 20 years. The novelty wore off in a week or two and I stopped weighing at home. I had learned I could trust my plan. At my monthly follow-up appointments I also realized my surgeon didn't focus on weight. In fact, the only time we talked about my weight was when I brought it up. He was interested in how I was doing on the plan, how I was doing mentally, if there were any concerns. I took his cue and have since focused on the same things over the years. I only weigh in at my annual physicals with my PCP. Bottom line: I didn't know about my stalls, never got depressed behind them, so never had to break either stall or stall depression. I just kept plugging away at my plan. Get off the scale, it is not your friend. Good luck, Tek -
So, I suffer from PCOS. & for those who know what that is or have it, know that often times your period is super irregular or it just doesn’t come at all. For me, In order to get a period I either had to be on birth control, or progesterone. I never got periods on my own. September 21st 2021 I had surgery & October 11th, 2021 I got my 1st period on my own with out the assistance of pills. It lasted about 8 days. Stopped for a day, and came back. I’ve been spotting and bleeding off and on since. I know that the weight loss and my hormones have a lot to do with it. But i’m super irritable, emotional, and tired. I hate feeling like this. Luckily I have an appointment with my OBGYN on Tuesday 11/2. What birth controls worked for you to regulate your menses?

Therapy and mental health help when having self pay surgery
Wahinebythesea replied to Devi's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I actually thought about this a whole lot. I was self pay in Canada, and while there was nutritional counselling, there wasn't any psychological counselling as part of the package. I worried about the emotional and psychological adjustments that I'd have to make after surgery, changes in interpersonal relationships, possible dysmorphia, etc. etc. Your mileage probably will vary, but what I found is that none of that has been an issue. I am skinner and healthier than I was, but otherwise I am exactly the same person as I was before. Maybe that's because I didn't really have as much weight to lose as some (I'm only down 65 lb) but for what's it's worth, my experience was that the psychological impact of surgery was vastly overemphasized. I think your planning for potential problems is wise, but for what it's worth, I spent a lot of time worrying over nothing. -
Almost 3 weeks out.. am I doing something wrong?
Prisci1608 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had the gastric bypass on Oct 12. Ive lost 10lbs since then & havent lost anymore. I feel like I might be doing something wrong? I’ve read so much about people not meeting Protein goals due to feeling full/restriction, which I dont feel. I’m currently able to eat 3-4oz meals & I feel like maybe its too much? Like I shouldnt be able to eat so much, so soon after surgery. I’m eating slowly, taking time between each bite & I wait the 30 mns after my meal to drink Water. However, I don’t feel any restriction and I don’t feel full(I dont feel hungry either, but I eat to reach my protein goals). Should I be able to eat this much so soon out of surgery? Am I eating too much & that’s why I haven't lost any more weight? Is there something I should do differently? *I was cleared to eat eggs, flaky fish, & tuna. & I eat every 3-4hrs, & once I meet my protein goal, I focus on my water & don’t eat more. For reference -

No cons other than cost perhaps. I think its a great idea, some people (me included) tend to focus on the scales too much. We may strive and struggle to reach some magical scale weight but we may have insufficient body fat to lose after already losing a lot of weight. Focusing on body composition is a positive way forward.

I lost another 11kgs in the 11 months after I reached my goal. It took me a while to reach the sweet spot of the calories I consumed equaling the calories I burnt. The weight loss got slower & slower. I found it hard to eat more in a meal so I adding calories via additional snacks. I was up to 4 or 5 snacks a day (yoghurt, cheese, fruit, protein bar, whole/multigrain crackers, hummus). I truely felt like I was eating all day & it took effort like @ms.sss also experienced. Been stabilised for about 12 months. My meals are larger (about a recommended portion size) & I only have 3 or the odd fourth snack a day to reach the calories I need to maintain. I didn’t really start to feel hungry again until well into my second year and I still have days I’m not hungry. On those days I try to at least eat protein rich foods. My attitude to food has changed a lot. I usually eat to provide my body with the calories & nutrients it needs to function - I eat because I need to not because I want to. My experience is similar to some but not most. So far, I’m more of an exception. An outlier who throws a spanner in the statistical data & does more (or less) than statistically predicted. I am on the low BMI range end but turns out I actually have a smallish frame. Don’t know what your goal weight is but if you’re getting close you should definitely be slowing. You could start to add a little more to your diet via healthy snacks. Speak to your dietician for advice & suggestions. Just ignore those comments. We all got them. I did when I was 60kgs but don’t get them anymore 11kgs less - get you look great ones now. It doesn’t help that as we near our goal weight we start to look drawn. Once we add some good multi or whole grains back in our diet & our remaining fat resettles we look less gaunt. Those comments are more about how others perceive you not whether you are healthy & happy. It takes time for their vision of you to catch up with the new reality of you. Congrats on your weight loss so far.

Pain due to Gastric Sleeve or my back/spine?
Arabesque replied to Green1's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The herniated discs will likely be causing your pain & spasms. I have 2 oozy discs in my lower back which are protruding but have not burst through yet to be fully herniated. Not sure if I fully understand your question though & I am making some presumptions. But losing weight certainly helped reduce the pressure on my back & the discs - less weight to carry & my posture improved. I also was given exercises to support my core muscles & gently stretch my lower back which helped too. My back only gets what I call tired if I stand too long now. -
Has anyone gotten a dexa scan to start measuring body fat percentage and look at body composition? I am thinking about it as a new way to set goals and keep making progress as I think I am pretty close to my maintenance weight. Looking for pros and cons.

I"m not sure if I've ever heard that (but I've been hanging out on this and other boards for about seven or eight years, so it may have come up and I'd just forgotten). I never had that issue. And now that I've lost all that weight, I rarely even break a sweat!

Advice: Going through with the surgery
E-mom replied to Namiland's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. That's why I decided to go for the surgery. Each time I regained, my all time high weight increased a few pounds more. It is time to break the cycle. -
Today is one year since my revision bypass surgery. I've lost 59 pounds since surgery and 95 pounds since my all-time pre-sleeve weight. I am healthy, happy and feel better than I've felt in 20 years! And the great news is - I no longer have GERD! Good luck to all of us who are on this crazy weight loss journey and I'm grateful for this forum to be able to openly share my outcomes. Other social media platforms would never understand our journeys.
