    Name10 Foods

This is funny! I don't think I have much at 10 months out that I can't eat at least a few bites of if I want it. But here's the few things that I usually stay away from: 1. bread in any form that's not thinly sliced and/or toasted 2. rice 3. Pasta 4. too much sugar (sadly, I define "too much" after the fact when I'm slightly nauseous!) 5. more than a few bites of fried foods. I ate a crunchy taco in August and did just fine with one crunchy chicken taco. 6. this is weird but meats that are cooked too dry. I have more trouble with dry meats foaming up on me - ewww! I eat too much pop corn and dry Cereal (I love to snack on multi-grain cheerios!) I really need to branch out my Protein foods because I eat too much dairy for protein.

    fat

Your yogurt: 160 calories, 11 grams Protein, 2.3 grams fat, 19 sugar, 20 carbs. I'd personally go with a lower cal version . Dannon makes a light and fit, double protein blended (including the coconut) with 80 cals, 0 fat, 9 carbs, 7 sugar and 12 protein. It's delicious. That said, if you are under calories and carbs and you love this particular yogurt, eat it. It's fine.

    My First Blog

I wish I had discovered this website before my surgery. I've been wanting a way to document this process . . .journey if you will and now I have it. So, here goes. I had my surgery on february 13th, 2009. I weighed 372 lbs and had a BMI over 50. I'm 5'11 so my height tempers some of my weight. I'm 29 years old and felt that I needed to do something before I turned 30. Weightloss surgery had been on my mind for the last 6 or 7 years. Though heavy - I've always felt good. It wasn't until I was about 25. I had lost 65 lbs on the low carb diet. Within a year and a half I had gained it all back plus some. After experiencing what it was like to be smaller and have more energy made it very hard. I felt every pound now. Saw how more difficult it was to get around. I've been miserable for the last 2 years or so as the weight has packed on even more. I knew I had to do something. So, fast forward the whole first visit to the doctor, approval process, preop appointments, etc. etc. THE SURGERY Of course I was nervous about the surgery. My biggest fear was that I would fail. The surgery that was to take 1hr ended up taking 3 due to some scar tissue I had. My doctor told me he had to place the band a little deeper than usual due to the scar tissue. I was in recovery for about an hour and whisked home. I live about 2 hrs from the surgery center - I slept all the way home. All I remember was that it had snowed earlier in the day so as we were going through the mountains I would wake up and see how beautiful it all looked but need to immediately close my eyes because I was so nauseous. POST OP The first day I slept. All I ate that evening was a popsicle and some water with my meds. I didn't have an appetite. By the second day I was in a little pain but decided to go off of my meds so that I wouldn't be so loopy. Took some alleve instead. My stomach hurt all the time that first 3 days and I couldn't figure out why. Turns out it was gas. One day I let out a big burp and felt relief. That same day I picked up some gas x, and stopped eating the sugar free pudding and popsicles and haven't had a problem since. The first 3-5 days were the hardest. I lived off of broth, soup at hand, pudding, and yogurt (mostly yogurt). I didn't really have an appetite. The first 3 days was clear liquids - I tended to be hungry all the time and questions whether this was working because I thought the point was this would make you feel full - I later realized this was because my band was open and all liquids just went straight through. I was so scared to take a big gulp of water because I thought it would instantly fill and stretch my pouch. I moved on to full liquids for 1 week. I had a protien shake that contains about 35 grams per serving that I drank with milik. I made it through the liquid phase by living on yogurt whick I would slowly eat for 30 mins. I often didn't even get through 1/2 of the 6oz container. After the first week I moved on to the soft diet phase. Srambled eggs were my saving grace. I could also eat pureed foods - I pureed some chicken soup that had noodles and chicken. I ate a couple of bites but just couldn't do it. I decided to forego the pureed foods and just stuck to yogurt, cream of wheat, and soup.Occasionally I threw in things like cottage cheese, mashed potatoes, and sweet potatoes - which went down very well. When I got to to 4th week I was ready to do solid foods. For 4 days in a row atleast one of my meals was Broiled Salmon, brussels sprouts, mashed potatoes, and a salad. I ate it all on a small plate and had a lot left on my plate. I was however surprise at how much I could eat. I've felt like this is what a normal person would eat. Another thing I was surprised about was how consumed with food I was. Every activity in my life revolved around FOOD. "We're going over Mom's house tonight - Let's pick up something to eat", "Let's pick up a movie - And order a pizza too", Let's stay in - grab some snacks". I would open my mouth to say these things and realize I can't do that anymore. I physically can't. I didn't make the experience any less though. My first real "come to Jesus" moment was when at a work conference I was confronted by a buffet about 5 weeks after being banded. As I stood in line I found it amusing because usually when present with a buffet my thoughts would be "how do I put as much food as possible on my plate without people noticing how high my plate is stacked". I would look at other people's plates to see if anyone else was eating a lot. As I would eat I would think about seconds, or dessert, or thirds, or what I couldn't fit on my plate. This time I had to think about how do I get to enjoy the BEST things in the buffet in the little amount of food I could actually eat. It was a sandwich bar - so I opted for HALF a sandwich instead of a whole. Didn't SAMPLE all the salads there but just took a small spoonful of what I thought I'd enjoy most. For dessest - 1 cookie - not a handful. I ended up splitting the cookie with a friend. It was that moment that I knew the lap band and I were gonna be good friends. It wasn't just a physical change - its was changing the way I thought mentally and my approach to food. WEIGHT LOSS At my first post op appt 2 wks after my surgery I had lost 10 lbs. 4 weeks - I had lost 20 (Was supposed to get banded but couldn't - see my next post) 6 weeks still at 20 (My doctor said it was because my band was still open - got filled this week)

    Christmas Cookie Contest

Here is a famous New Mexico Christmas cookie... Cant have Christmas without them.. Very Very Fatty.. hehehe BISCOCHITOS 3/4 cups sugar 8 ounces vegetable shortening or lard 1 egg 1.5 teaspoons vanilla 1 teaspoon anise seed 3 cups flour 1.5 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt Cinnamon Sugar: 1/4 cup sugar 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. To make the cinnamon sugar, combine the ingredients in a small bowl and set aside. In a large mixing bowl, cream the sugar and shortening together. Add the eggs, vanilla, and anise seed, and continue beating until the mixture is creamy. In another bowl, sift the flour, baking powder, and salt together. Add the dry ingredients to the shortening mixture, a little at a time, and beat to mix well after each addition. Continue until all the flour has been incorporated and a stiff, smooth dough. Do not refrigerate as the dough needs to be warm to hold together. To roll out the Cookies, place a ball of dough about 3 or 4-inches in diameter on a lightly floured surface. Roll out using a very light stroke with a rolling pin. The dough should resemble pie pastry more than cookie dough. Using a sharp knife or cookie cutter, cut the dough into the desired shape. Dust with the cinnamon sugar and place on a lightly oiled baking pan. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, remove, and cool the cookies on a rack. Yield: 3 to 4 dozen, depending on the shape

  7. I am also nervous and excited. I have prepared myself for the worst and hope it is better. Maybe I am crazy ,but I felt so much better about the procurer once I watched it on it on YouTube. I take a platelet med and I was concerned with blood clotting since I am still taking them until 7 days prior. Good luck. Oct 14 10:30 will be here before I know it
  8. I am new to the boards and feeling so nervous right now. My surgery date is 10/14...I am doing OK on the pre op diet but my anxiety over the initial post op phase is getting to me. I am obsessing that I won't get in enough fluids and proteins, or imagining the worst...that I will have a leak. Just wanting to feel that this is normal?

  10. Three to four protein shakes a day with a max of 800 calories. Then at least 64oz of non caffeinated, non carbonated, drinks with less than 10 calories per serving.
  11. I am also going to use Lent to try to get my last 10 pounds off. I plan to restrict my eating to just the three meals a day with no snacks. On fast days I will have one meal along with 2 protein shakes a day, one for breakfast and one more for lunch. That should help keep my protein levels up.

    Swing batter batter! SWING!

I am sure I do not stand alone when I say to you, we are here for you! It wasn't always this way, I didn't used to have a supportive husband. In fact I come from a 10 year marriage where support was the last thing I would expect. My oldest three children are from my first husband, he was a drunk and drug abuser. My oldest son, the one I speak of in this blog was my ex husbands biggest fan. How heart breaking when he found out the truth and still to this day finds out more and more. I am going to add you as a friend... there is much much more to my story that I haven't even gotten to touch yet in my blogs and I think... well I hope you may benefit from it. Please, any time you need someone to vent to, to listen to you, someone who wont judge, someone for support... call on me!
  15. Hello everyone, I went to my first consultation. I am a little scared of the sleeve now. I was so excited, but after going to this, I am now fearful of the sleeve leaking. I know like this it is complications with everything, but I just want to know if anyone has had this fear at all. The doctor talked about long term effects. Has anyone had their sleeve longer than 10 years and if so how are things going ? Any feed back would be wonderful! I love the support here!!

    Banded 1/31

I was banded 1/29/07 and it was just yesterday that I finally felt "good". Maybe being 52 has more to do with taking a bit longer to feel better but nonetheless I'm glad it's done. After reading almost every post on this site,,lol,,I had all my pre and post op lists checked off before going into the hospital. Thanks to all who gave their suggestions from which the lists were compiled, it was a life-saver! It's full liquids for me until my 5th week,,so I'll keep checking the food/recipes section for updates. God bless all those who have posted and have eased the way for all of us "newbies".:clap2: Banded 01/29/07 Dr. Ken Cleveland CMMC-Bariatric Weight Mgmt-Jackson, MS Pre-surg wt 330 Post surg 7 days-318 Goal- 160

    Banded 1/31

I was banded 01/29/07 and was in at 10:00am and out by 1:00pm ... I didn't have too much pain except a lot of burning at the port site and horrible left shoulder pain also. The shoulder pain is probably by biggest complaint right now, especially if i'm working and can't get up to walk around. But I can't sleep much on my left due to the port pain but i'm doing ok with the diet and all ... everyone keep up the good work !!

I have only had few minor burps, however, I do think that the Prevacid SoluTabs, 1 daily, is taking care of that. This was a prescription by my surgeon upon my release from the hospital. The cherry creme chewable Gas-X tabs are really taking care of the gas pain in my shoulder. Thank you so much to MICHELLE & JILL for their truly appreciated advice ! . I also forgot to make arrangements for my slew of daily prescribed meds to be changed to either liquid or chewables, so going cold turkey has make me so weak.:faint: I can't believe I am really getting this senile ! I'm still on only clear liquids, but, tried a little applesauce today and it great ! We'll stay in touch..........10/31 banders ! Until later.........take care everybody.....

    Banded 1/31

Hi Anne, A little delayed in responding to your post, but just saw it today. I had my surgery the day after my 66th birthday. I did great. It took me about 10 days to really feel close to normal again, but from reading a lot of the posts on here, many people much younger take that long and longer. I really think it is very individual and that had I done this at a younger age I might have bounced back a little sooner. But I really believe it was worth it. I believe that I will probably lose the weight a little more slowly than those that are younger, but that will probably be better for my skin. I am mostly excited about what the weight loss will do for my health and my ability to be active and not have to "slow down" due to my age. At least it will no longer be my weight that is holding me back.

THIS made it so worth it...

I had surgery 10 months ago. I was a self pay, and really wanted the gastric bypass because my sister had it and lost over 100 pounds in one year, but I couldn't afford it so I chose the lap band. WELL!!! I was changing my shirt the other day and my sister looked at me amazed and asked me where was all my hanging skin? HA!!! I told her with the lap band it comes off more slowly and she was still amazed. She has a problem with her skin on her abdomen sagging after losing her weight so quickly. SCORE : Lap Band = 10 Gastric = 0:thumbup:
  21. So today is 10 days after surgery and I still have pain where my incision is. RIght under my incision it's very hard..I wonder if this is normal?? I also have some sharp pain that comes and goes on the left side of my rib cage...I am guessin that is where they put the port. I have my follow-up appt. today THANK GOD! and I am praing that everything is okay...My friend said that maybe I developed a hernia under the incision and now I'm scaredddd!! Has anyone expereinced anything similar??
  22. I Got my last fill 12/09/11 7 cc total in my 10 cc band going on a cruise in couple of days Happy Holidays
  23. I know the pain issue is different for everyone. For me there was quite literally no pain to speak of. I had my surgery on 11/15 which was a Thursday, home Friday and the last dose of the pain meds I took was Saturday night even though I really didn't need them at that point. I was back up and visiting clients on that Monday and felt perfectly fine. Stomach itself never did hurt, the incisions were just the very tiniest bit sore for a couple days. Honestly the absolute worst thing for me was the itchy incisions around days 5 to 10. And really it was hardly noticeable just that it was the only thing worth mentioning. That said I do know I have a relatively higher pain tolerance. I think though there are a lot of factors involved from your own tolerances, your personal anatomy and it's effect on the surgery, surgeon's skill etc. I know my surgeon is very highly respected and even at that started doing the sleeve's with the DaVinci surgical robot to raise the standard even higher. I can't say for sure it made a difference but I know it allows more maneuverability and greater precision with slightly less room inside being needed. I can't help but think it played a role. Bottom line though is I was scared out of my mind and was ready to rip the IV's out and walk before hand. After it was all said and done I felt so good afterwards I wished I hadn't waited so long.

    Beginning My Journey

You basically told my past and why I started gaining weight at the age of 10. And again you sound like you are taking charge of your life as well. God Bless You.
  25. Ok I'm 19 years old and I am getting the sleeve done on the 29th and tomorrow I have to start my 14 days pre op diet. I am scared I don't know what to eat they basically >/= 50 grams of protein no more then 40 grams of fat and no more then 1000 calories a day. So I'm scared what if I don't make it'. Any advice.
