  4. Congrats on getting to goal and on maintaining. And huge cudos for doing therapy to work through your old "tapes." I think it's important (at least for me), to set up a "new normal" with a "new set of road rules" for eating/living. The old me is dead/gone/buried/grieved. In her place is this resurrected phoenix who is stronger and more capable of new things--embraces all new things. Sometimes I have to remind myself of this transformation and remind myself that the old rules no longer apply to the new me. They aren't my "recipe for healthy living." That helps a lot. One of the tools I use for the new future is IF. Through IF, I find that there is room on non-IF days to be a bit more relaxed in my choices. But at the bottom is my rule of 90/10 or even 95/5 more likely than not. That means I eat healthy, nutritionally dense, calorically light, and to my cals/macros 95/5 of the time. And that also means my hard fast rule is: #1 Eat protein first (dense, lean protein = 2-3oz per meal)>>then al dente light low carb veggies>>small amounts of healthy fat at each meal>>then low glycemic fruits if still hungry (I'm never hungry at this point--fruit is always a small snack with protein and fat). I don't have to "REMEMBER" to do this, or think it through. It's now a "NEW" habit. I work on it every day cuz I want to let it settle into a forever habit. You can do this. The only hard things are the things we CHOOSE to make difficult and hard. Doing things repetitively helps cement behaviors and actions and relationships.

New here and just had surgery

I didn’t seem like I was losing until about 6 weeks out. The first month my body was adjusting to the shock of surgery and nothing really happened. After that I was pretty consistently losing 10 pounds a month.

    Looking for a surgery buddy;

Oh that’s great I’m happy for you both, I wish my mother wouldn’t have been so afraid of surgery she would most likely still be alive today. She was always afraid yet was always there for me when disaster would happen. Most of my scar tissue is from a ovarian cyst that burst and took my right ovary I guess it did a lot of damage. I was only 17 at the time so I have lived with this scar tissue for quite some time and it bothers me every time they tell me it’s there. My son and I bought regular bikes about 3-4 yrs ago unfortunately that’s when my knee went bad and my bike got parked. If my stationary bike gets me in shape to where it’s safe for me to travel safely on the regular one come spring I’ll do it. I’ll have to add that to my GOAL CALENDAR. The groundhog is predicting an early spring I sure hope he’s right, it was almost 60* yesterday here raining all day but today it’s 10* and windy and freezing . Indiana weather is crazy!!!! Coat on coat off LOL I love to go to our fairgrounds to walk and take Jalapeño that’s where my daughter showed him in 4-H and both my son and daughter were members in the Horse and pony club as well. Eggs and the lil tomatoes are great I too always have them on hand. I also keep the mozzarella string cheese , cucumber slices and pickles on hand in case I don’t get those calories. And need something to dip I use my Olive Garden dressing only a couple drops tho. Or cottage cheese for dip.. I do track my sodium and can’t go over 2300 mg so pickles are limited I’ understand there’s gonna come a time we will need to drink a lot of broth which is ok with me as I have always loved chicken broth but I’ve only had it loaded with salt like Mrs grasses soup if you’ve ever had it. So this week I’m gonna Buy a broth that has no salt that I found and see how it tastes. I figure I better see what I’m getting into. LOL who knows I might like it. Keeping my fingers crossed!!

    Seeing the shrink

That is (pun intended) insane! I can't believe they made you do all that - though obviously you had a good outcome. Mine was 10 minutes, and about 5 generic questions checked off a list.

Weird Stuff That Delayed Your Surgery Approval

My delay was caused by many blood clots in both lungs. I ended up in the ER than admitted in the hospital exactly 3 weeks before my surgery. I spent 4 full days in the hospital, then when they released me it took about 24 hours to find out I was allergic to the blood thinner they gave me an hour before leaving the hospital. As an inpatient I was on a 24/7 IV heparin drip, no problem. I was switched 2 different times to different medication. They finally decided to put me on warfarin. September 2018 was when this all began. I had to see a hematologist, to make sure the blood clots were not from an underlying clotting disorder. All those test came back negative. What was finally decided was that the birth control my ob/gym put me on 42 days before this happened caused all the clots. I can not have any type of estrogen ever again. Everything is on track. My hematologists cleared me for surgery. I am on day 11 of my 14 day liquid pre-op diet. I have lost 110 lbs from March 2018 until my last weigh in on 2/7/19. I have lost a total of 154 lbs from May 2017 I am ready for this and can’t wait to get this transformation started on 2/12.
  9. Everyone is different, but I’m 10 days out, and have lost 18 lbs since my bypass (61 lbs total including the 43 lbs I lost pre op).

Options is a weight loss class. It explains everything about the surgery and eating before and after. Its every other week for 3 months or so. Its mandatory at Kaiser and you're expected to lose weight during this time. Typically 10% of your weight but no number is officially given to you. You have to "pass" the class to get the surgery but there's no test. If you show up to class and lose a little weight you'll be ok. There were no hidden costs at Kaiser for the surgery just whatever your co pay is. For me it was $250
  12. yup, i didnt pass gas for four days. i barely got down the protein shakes, and i barely finished a bottle of water. its important to just keep sipping water. slip all day like every 10 minutes.

How do I break this habit?

Ok--sounds like you need another veteran to respond. (Not sure why non-veterans are answering these posts...) Empathy? You got it! Try salads, veggies, water, water, water, and 10 minutes on the treadmill or climbing stairs, your choice. I also recommend eating at the table instead of in front of the tube and actively considering what goes into your mouth. It is NOT easy, but I believe in you!!!

    5 years almost

Be careful! I have gained more than nine due to every excuse in the book. (medical issues, medicine, depression, etc.) and 9 pounds becomes 19 really fast! So I'm in month 2 of recovery and watching a pound a week going in the right direction feels pretty good.
  15. LOL yeah, I've been doing a lot of ab exercises to help with my back issues. I almost couldn't keep the grin off my face when I was able to do 3 sets of 10 of incline bench crunches while holding a 25 lb plate. And the fact that I can actually start to feel them is just so damn cool LOL.

Weird Stuff That Delayed Your Surgery Approval

I had to have 90 days with a nutritionist before my insurance would approve and then I had to have my family doctor recommend I had the surgery. In addition, the surgeon required a psych appointment along with 3 group counseling sessions - all standard for sleeve patients. Once everything was completed - and only then - would they submit to insurance. Insurance came back less than a week later with approval and then the surgery was scheduled. I had no surprises - everything was well mapped out and went as planned. Good luck with your insurance and surgery. Btw - I started the process on 8/30/18 and had my surgery on 1/10/19.

payments are what your copay is. For example I had to pay for specialist office visits each time I saw the bariatric team. Options class had no copay. For the surgery I only paid the overnight hospital stay copay. Surgery is not approved until the surgeon clears you after completing the program. My time line was as follows: Cleared by PCP for Options Bariatric program (Socal is 12 weeks) 9-1-17 Orientation for Options program 9-6-17 Start Options 9-14-17 get tests and visits with Bariatric doctors, EKG, Psych eval if needed during Options Completed Options on12/7/17 Cleared to meet with Surgeon by Options Doctor on 12/13/17 Met Surgeon on 1/8/19 scheduled surgery with surgeon staff after meeting weight loss goal from surgeon (besides the Options weight loss) Pre Op visit with surgeon 2/23/18 Surgery with overnight hospital stay 3/7/19 Followup surgery visit 3/16/19 cleared by surgeon to return to work 3/20/18 Hope that helps
  20. I had my lap band placed over 10 years (when I was 57) and had left shoulder pain immediately after surgery. My clueless surgeon didn't know why. I had all the fill removed a year later. I got the left shoulder pain when I was eating and knew it was my stop signal. I switched to another surgeon who said the band can irritate the phrentic nerve and that could be the cause so I thought getting it removed would solve that problem. I have always hated the band for a variety of issues but getting stuck was the biggest. So fast forward to 16 days ago when I got it removed. I woke up with left shoulder pain and they said it was gas, etc. and it did improve until about 6 days ago when it got worse and is more of less constant. My surgeon (different from the first two) doesn't know why and said I should see a gastro, orthopedic or PCP. I also have developed a burning, greasy feeling in my throat that I didn't have prior to the removal. I have been on Nexium for many years. My surgeon said everything looked fine, no erosion, no hiatal hernia, as he also did an endoscopy. Has anyone had either of these problems and if so how were they resolved, if they were? Thank you.

    Gastric Sleeve Surgery 2/20/2019

I never really lost much weight and when I had fluid in the lapband I couldn't get anything down so I have had it empty for about 8 years now and just started gaining again in the last year. The lapband typicallly has a life span of 10 years and I am at 10 Years this past January, I have had acid reflux issues with it which made me worried about getting the sleeve but because I have a hiatal hernia and lapband, and not a history of Acid reflux, he is convinced the two combined are causing the reflux in the first place so hopefully that is the case.

    Prepare for VSG

Hi Jeff, It took only a few days after surgery to feel okay and normal and up to two weeks to recover with energy. It takes a little longer to lift > 10 pounds and do more strenuous stuff, but you'll feel good right away. My best advice would be to try to start eating NOW like you'll be eating after surgery. Small meals, small portions, learning not to drink with your meals, etc. That'll make the transition easier.

    Water intake after Sleeve

I wasn't under the impression that we had to drink any less, but a minimum of 64 oz or more per day. So more is okay, just not WITH meals, at least 10 minutes before and 30 minutes after.
  25. Vegan, Gluten-Free Ingredients 1 tablespoon coconut oil (or oil of choice) 1 medium onion, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 1/2 tablespoons freshly grated ginger 2 teaspoons curry powder 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric 1 cup red lentils 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into large dice 4 cups low-sodium vegetable broth 1 teaspoon sea salt + more to taste Freshly cracked black pepper 1-2 teaspoons maple syrup (optional) For serving: coconut yogurt and fresh cilantro Directions Select the Sauté setting on your Instant Pot and heat up the coconut oil. Once it's shimmering, add the onion and cook for 3-4 minutes until slightly softened. Add the garlic, ginger, curry powder and turmeric and stir until aromatic, about 30 seconds. Add the lentils, sweet potatoes, vegetable broth, sea salt, and pepper. Stir to combine all of the ingredients. Select the Cancel setting. Secure the lid of the Instant Pot and seal. Select the Pressure Cook (or Manual, depending on your model) setting and cook at high pressure for 10 minutes. Once the 10 minutes is up, allow a natural pressure release for 10 minutes. Open the Instant Pot and give the soup a stir. Taste for seasonings. You may want to add more salt, or to balance the acidity, you may want to add a teaspoon or two of maple syrup or sugar. Once the soup has slightly cooled, top with coconut yogurt and fresh cilantro. I added carrots and celery. It looks kinda gross but it was really tasty. I added a lot of salt...he he and I did add maple syrup
