My gradmother got the bypass in the 70's sometime to and she lost a lot of wieght but she gained it all back! I once wanted to get the bypass until I found out about the band. Now I would never evey think about getting the bypass. Even if I have to pay out of my pocket for it. -
Non-NSAIDs Pain Relievers
JeanZ_RN replied to blondiebabs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was taking a prescription NSAID (Feldene) consistently before my sleeve surgery, for osteoarthritis pain in several joints and in my lower back. I stopped it before surgery, per surgeon's orders, and took Tylenol or, rarely, prescription narcotics when I had to have something. Immediately after the surgery I was delighted to find that my aches and pains were GONE. I don't know why (maybe endorphins?), but that low-to-moderate level nagging pain in my joints and lower back was no there. That lasted several months. When the aches gradually returned, they were at first less bothersome than pre-op, which I attributed to weight loss. Now, at 7 mos out, they're back to pre-surgery intensity but they're more episodic instead of constant. My surgeon said I can take my Feldene now, but only intermittently. When the aches get to me I take it for a couple of weeks, then stop for at least a few weeks. He said to wait until I'm at least a full year post op before I take it consistently again. The benefits of this particular NSAID are that I only have to take it once a day, and there are at least two strengths: 10 mg and 20 mg. Celebrex would be another good choice. Please note that anytime that anyone (WLS or no) takes an NSAID they should always always always take it with food. -
Non-NSAIDs Pain Relievers

Congrats on your date!! Very exciting. And yes my weight is def hurting my joints. To the extent of me being very depressed at times. After I wake up in the morning it takes me almost ten min just to get to the stairs. And I need to hold on to anything as I walk. I hate those days when they are that bad. I'm trying to walk and get my 30 min a day now, but with no NSAIDs and how much pain my ankle is in...ugh. Feels like an endless cycle. And sometimes I don't walk, and even throw myself a pity party cause of it. I have to stop that too. Just push through it. Ugh. Venting morning for me sorry! -

Non-NSAIDs Pain Relievers
Gammy10 replied to blondiebabs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, @@KSTUZ we can do this! I do not like getting those cortisone shots either! We will feel so much better once we shed some of this extra weight. My ortho doctor says for every pound I lose, it takes 4 pounds of pressure off my joints. Now, that has to make a difference in how we feel. Thank you @@blondiebabs ! I hope to be posting from the losing bench soon! -
Non-NSAIDs Pain Relievers
Gammy10 replied to blondiebabs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am wondering the same thing. I have taken the highest dosage of Meloxicam for years due to bad articular cartilage in my knees. I have had three knee surgeries and this medication has definitely been my friend. I did stop taking it several weeks ago in anticipation of my upcoming surgery, but I am thinking I will be miserable without the meds until some of this weight comes off. The nurse did tell me about an Nsaid cream that is prescription that I could try, but I have not contacted my ortho surgeon about that yet. -
I also am reminded as I read posts here that we all have different relationships with food. I have struggled with disordered eating all my life and watched my mom struggle with her weight and food too. My cousin did this surgery 7 years ago and said she never thinks about food and has to remind herself to eat. She has maintained most of her weightloss. I was hoping that would be the case for me but I am almost a month out and I can see that is not the journey I am on sadly. But I am determined to get to a healthy weight and to have a healthy relationship with food. Anyway this is just me rambling.

Thinking of Lap Band Surgery
RestlessMonkey replied to Msbosse's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had a BMI of around 67 when I got my surgery. So no, a higher BMI isn't a contraindication. This is surgery to promote weight loss. If your doc tries to push bypass on you, go to a seminar where you can get objective fair data on both and make your choice. I had to do a preop diet that was pretty strict but it wasn't to lose weight so much as to shrink my (enlarged by fat) liver. You may have that depending on your lab results etc. However it was just for a few weeks (would've only been 3 if I hadn't cheated) and it wasn't that bad. -

Looking for a reason to go to Orlando, Florida? This could be your excuse! This September 25-27 is Your Weight Matters! The Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) sponsors the event, which is a non-profit organization that advocates for individuals who are affected by obesity. Your Weight Matters! is an initiative to help you take control of your weight. The national convention is focused on…you! It gives you the chance to mingle with other individuals who are fighting obesity, as well as healthcare providers and other experts. Educational sessions include talks by surgeons and other doctors, physical therapists, dietitians, and nurses. Topics include: Avoid weight regain after bariatric surgery. Figuring out which weight loss option is best for you. Stress management. Getting active at work. Mindful eating. Long-term medical concerns after weight loss surgery. Besides these talks, you can attend useful and fun events such as: Group exercise classes to start the day. lunch with experts in obesity treatment. Free health screenings. A health expo, where you’ll find BariatricPal! That’s right. BariatricPal is going to be at Your Weight Matters! I hope you’ll make it, too! If you can make it to Orlando between Thursday and Saturday, September 25-27, I’d love to see you at the expo! Stop by the BariatricPal booth and introduce yourself! It’s a great way to get involved in the fight against obesity. I hope to see you soon in Orlando! -
I am not struggling with eating out of boredom YET, but I understand exactly what you are going through as I have done this my entire life. Planned snacks are great, and the nuts or jerky can fit into that plan. The key is having the mindset that the snack is fueling your body instead of just doing it because you are bored. I smoked cigarettes for 10 years. When I quit 10 years ago, I realized that "triggers" as they call it, were real. I mentally and unconsciously had a cigarette whenever a trigger was present. That trigger might be getting in the truck to drive. It might be the end of a meal. The point is that if you are snacking when you are bored, you are continuing the bad habit that got you into trouble in the first place. I think this is a big problem for most of us. We have to use this time to change that if we are to continue being successful. I work at a computer all day. I got my job to purchase a Veridesk for me, so that I can stand up and work. It does help. It takes me out of my comfort zone of sitting, and the cravings dissipate. I also burn more calories standing than sitting. Mind you, I don't do this all day. Just periodically. Maybe you can take a break and walk around the office for a minute or two whenever you get that craving. You are doing really well, and I have no doubt that you will continue to be successful. Mindless snacking might just be the thing that hinders you from meeting or exceeding your goal weight as the weight loss will undoubtedly slow down in the coming weeks and months. Anyway, good luck and thanks for bringing this up. This is a topic that is a real problem for most of us.

I too am really experiencing a lot of hair loss. It began at 4 months. I am losing it so quickly that I am afraid I will be bald by Christmas. I will be five months on November 25th. My hair dresser suggested a product line called Awaken. Very expensive, but we will see if it helps. I began 5,000 mcg of Biotin when I first noticed the hair loss begin. But this morning I lost a good handful of hair. Heartbreaking!! I love the weight loss, but I love my hair too... Carol

Feeling Discouraged!

Wearing old clothes again?

You said that you had found out you were pregnant. I know that, for me, my two pregnancies have totally shifted where my weight is. My stomach is still huge now, even though I am lower than I was when I got pregnant with either one. -
Had my surgery at 10am yesterday and am in ghe most pain I've ever been in. Stayed last night and was up every hour needing more morphine. Was able to walk last night and this afternoon but it was very hard and started some bleeding when I coughed. Haven't drank anything but ice chips, and liquid Vicodin. Everything I drink, even the smallest about, sends my stomach into a cramp fest that hurts so bad. Can hardly sleep because pain meds do not last. Just had a dose of the liquid Vicodin a half hour ago and the pain is already back I'm terrified about going home because have no recliner or propped up bed to lay in comfortably. Plus have 2 large dogs and my bathroom is in the other side of the house. Sorry for venting but just in so much pain. Starting weight 321- sleeve date 07/10/13 Sent from my iPhone using VST

Does liquid pre-op dieting slow weight loss post-surgery?
belunos replied to WorldTraveler's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't know there would be any correlation. From the testimonies I've read the surgery just sacks everything to hell. Some people gain from the fluids. My experience: I lost 27 lbs on the pre op, and another 25 or so in three weeks after. Hit a stall at week 3, but I doubt it's related. -
Two Weeks Out And Need Help
aviiva replied to sleeve523's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just wondering why you would go through all the trouble to have the sugery and then go back to old eatng habits. The sleeve is just a tool, but you have to be smart about using it. Many people are not mentally ready for the change and it is a big change. Think about why you had the sleeve and what you wanted to gain from it. -
HELP! I have a BIG problem with snacking. What can I Do?
notmeanymore replied to sweetgirl1314's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Just stop snacking. LOL. I know its easier said than done. I used to be a big snacker too pre-surgery but post surgery I judge everything I put in my mouth on a scale of 'is it sleeve worthy or not'. If it doesnt have protein or fruit or vegetable, it typically does not go in my mouth. When Im 'hormonal' and only chocolate will save someones life, my hubby makes me chocolate covered strawberries. That way I get a little chocolate and lots of fruit. Its a compromise. After all I went thru to get sleeved and how active Ive become and how much weight Ive lost so far, there is no way in heck Im going back to my old ways. I refuse to fail. Love yourself and kick those snacks to the curb!! -
oh yeah As you loose weight your confidence builds up and of course you will feel sexier too! So i think that answers your question... Hope that helps.

Well, I am due for my follow up in the morning...My ob said to not worry if they didnt call me before then cuz that would mean that nothing was wrong...Well, when I got home from work I had a message to call the nurse for some results...Of course I called back and got a machine and they never called me back so I guess I will find out in the morning..I am hoping that its nothing of course and that they were just not aware of what the dr had told me...Its still driving me crazy not knowing tho...I havent lost anymore weight lately...I have been kinda stress eating, guess its time for my next fill if I am capable of doing that...Usually just the smallest amount of food fills me up to a point of feeling ill and lately have been able to eat more food...So the next fill wont get here soon enough for me!! I am keeping my fingers crossed for my appt in the morning and hope that everything turns out well, right now I am really worried about it tho...Will check back in tomorrow with the outcome of that visit!!:phanvan

Hello, I am booked for the sleeve on June 28th and still having doubts. My concerns have more to do with life after the surgery beyond the initial month. I accept that it will be a challenge and one I need to get on with. Another person made an comment that stuck - it is learning to no longer use food as a way to manage emotions and feelings. I keep thinking that if I didn't have long term success with normal dieting with liberal use of willpower isn't it likely that I will not be successful with this weight loss tool. Anyone struggle with this and how did you overcome? Is there anything you wish you had done before the surgery or after the surgery? What is the diet like a year on? Basically any advice would be welcome.
