New & Needing Post-Op Diet Advice
catwoman7 replied to Kay_G_B's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I'd mention it - if you're not on some kind of PPI, they may put you on one. A lot of surgeons automatically put all of their WLS patients on one for the first 3-6 months after surgery. also, not everyone is ready to move on to the next step. If your stomach is complaining, it's fine to keep at the previous step (in your case, purees) for another week or so before trying again. -
3 weeks post op and I want to detox
catwoman7 replied to Olivette's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
at three weeks out you should be following your plan to a "T". You are still healing. You could really muck things up. It's pretty common to have no energy at this point - you just had major surgery, and it takes time to heal. Also, does your plan allow meat at this point? I know plans differ, but I'm pretty sure I was still eating purees at three weeks out. -
Post bypass symptoms and nervous.
catwoman7 replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
constipation is super common right after WLS. It often takes a week - or even a couple days longer - for that first BM. you might want to start taking Miralax or stool softeners, because the first BM is usually a doozy you're probably nauseated because of the constipation. That's very common when you're really backed up. and the red stool - yep - you had surgery on your stomach and intestines, so it's likely from that. Although if you're worried, yes - go to the ER - if nothing else, for peace of mind. -
Hey everyone! I'm just coming on here to see if anyone has experienced similar issues or see if this is normal. My nurse is suppose to call me back tomorrow so I am still waiting. I'm 8 days post op from gastric bypass. While the surgical pain has subsided I have been experiencing tachycardia, extreme constipation (haven't had a full bowel movement in 9 days, just little bits here and there), I'm nauseous from pain in my intestines and today when I was able to go a little bit, my stool was red and I haven't had anything to cause that as well as extremely foul smelling. I had a family member who's a physician check me out casually and ask me some questions. They suggested that there might be some internal bleeding but to keep monitoring it and to rest and not move around too much or put stress on my body. I'm reading about things like leaks and I'm so nervous now. I want to know if anyone experienced this post op, like a week out. Should I go to the ER? I had the Gastric Sleeve procedure done almost a month ago. I've had no issues with the Full Liquid Diet stage, but when it came to transitioning to purees, it felt as though my stomach wasn't happy. It was suggested that it could have been the foods I was eating (too acidic, diary, etc) or that they weren't pureed enough. Other suggestions were that I wasn't eating slow enough. But sometimes, as soon as I took one bite my stomach would immediately start gurgling or I'd get the instant pain of acid reflux/heartburn. I am supposed to start "Soft Solids" on Saturday, but I fear with the trouble I faced with the purees...that I might need an extra week. I've had no issues with eating yogurt, jello, pudding, or soup (which is what I've tried to stick with since I know how my body will react). But with anything else I've tried, it is either the immediate gurgling or acid reflux/heartburn feeling. Is this something commonly experienced or something I should inform my doctor about? Kay_G_B

3 weeks post op and I want to detox
Hop_Scotch replied to Olivette's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I assume this will give you a bowel cleanout? These type of teas also dehydrate you as they draw water to the bowel. I doubt a 'detox' in this way will stop you feeling sluggish. You are likely feeling sluggish because you aren't getting sufficient fluids and the low calorie base, plus your body is still in recovery mode. Take your vitamins and other supplements as recommended, drink your fluids and follow food guidelines for types of foods and volumes. Is meat on post op guidelines for the stage you are at? If not, perhaps you best speak to your nutritionist or surgeon, if so, prepare the meat as instructed and you should be fine. If its a struggle give it a couple of more weeks before attempting again. -
I have a box of ballerina tea and I want to do a 5 day detox my energy is poor and I’ve been feeling full and sluggish since I started back eating meat this week is this safe ?

Says on my plan week 3 and 4 puree/soft foods but I’m so bad at maths and so confused, because I started purée last Wednesday as instructed so does that mean tomorrow I go onto soft foods? Or another week puree , then soft foods the week after that.

Hi LilaNicole20, It’s nice to have a surgery buddy. I’m feeling fine, in the middle of tiling a floor. I have 3 protein shakes plus one meal per day for this week. Lean meat 3-4 oz, 2 cups non starchy vegetables. Next week is 4 protein shakes per day. Clear liquids day before surgery. I pray the days fly by as well. -
Trip planned. Suggestions welcomed for soft foods.

I have been traveling since 4 weeks out from surgery more weeks than not. Here are some ideas (bearing in mind most of my travel is in the US, so I'm not sure what brands you have): Fat free, artificially sweetened or plain greek yogurt. Basically, you want no or low added sugar. You can get that from a grocery store and occasionally in airports (usually the yogurt is full of sugar, but you might get lucky!). Refried beans Ground meat (mince) based dishes like chili, tacos, Ma po Tofu, etc. Soft cheeses Protein drinks (or if you're further out, protein bars) Soup - cream of whatever, bean soup, etc Apple sauce Oatmeal (no sugar added) Banana Mashed veggies like sunchoke, cauliflower, potato, etc Hardboiled eggs with hummus If you are five weeks out and eating normal foods, it's really easy: you can go to a supermarket and buy deli meat, pre chopped veggies/fruit, hummus, cheese, etc. Or at restaurants: chili, soup, the inside of tacos or lasagna, hamburger minus the bun, flaky fish, etc. -

Thank you for this post...I will be travelling when I am at week 5 so on my program that is the beginning of "regular" food if I can tolerate it. The protein oatmeal is something I will need to get my hands on and bring with me since I will be in the Caribbean and not sure what they will have readily available for me to buy. I guess I could take RTD protein shakes with me as well if I check my bag or just take protein powder and still be able to use a carry on only. -
Day 21 post op, do I need to do another week of purée or can I go onto soft foods?

Hii Toomany#'s! We are surgery buddies!! My two week diet started today and my surgery is on the 8th as well. My pro-op diet consists of four 8oz protein shakes a day, unlimited veggies (there is a list), one dairy a day, one fruit, and 64oz of water. What does your surgeon have you doing? I'm excited and nervous, too! I just pray these days fly-by. How are you feeling otherwise? -
Will I ever be able to eat again?
lizonaplane replied to Smriti's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you are having trouble eating more than one bite of food, you might want to call your surgery center. It's possible you have a stricture, which can be fixed. You might also be eating too big of a bite, not chewing enough, or eating too fast. I have heard of people having issues from their bras, but I think it was right after surgery (can't remember for sure). I am able to eat more food at 5 months out than I could at 6 weeks out. That's a good thing, but I have to be careful that I don't eat multiple times a day because that could cause weight gain. Hope you feel better soon! -
I take normal-sized bites. I didn't the first few weeks or months out of surgery, but I do now.
-
it may have to do with blood sugar. Starting about year 3, I started having occasional dizziness that I couldn't explain. Had a complete workup at the doctor's office. Nothing. Everything normal. The next time I noticed it, It was about two hours after I had a piece of cake. I mentioned it to my doctor - she thinks it was probably reactive hypoglycemia, which sometimes happens in RNY patients (not super common, but it does happen to some). She thought that my glucose level just happened to be normal at the time I had the workup, so it didn't jump out at them. She recommended I eat something every three hours - preferably a protein - but if I eat a carb, to be sure to at least pair it with a protein. That seemed to have done the trick. At least for me. That may not be going on with you, though - you might want to check with your doctor.

I am now 2 weeks post op and I do still have stomach pain on my right which is where they remove part of your stomach but other than that it doesn’t feel to bad. Right after surgery I was a little sore at all the other incisions but that went away fairly quick. You can over eat and you can eat to fast I actually experienced it yesterday. I was only having broth and I think I just drank to fast and ended up having what is called dumping syndrome. Just remember after surgery listen to ur body pay attention and eat and drink slowly! Good luck on uour surgery! -
At 8 weeks out, I went away with 6 friends with hubby to a All inclusive weeks holiday. I took loads of things to snack on in case of not being able to anything in the restaurant and didnt need much of it. Any way to the point, I drank a few slim tonics and then found Britvic Tomato juice. It came in a 200ml bottle and had 47 cals in it. I put lots of sauce in and pretended it was a bloody mary. It tasted deliciously healthy and full of goodness and a great change from blackcurrant and water .

Hi! I got my gastric sleeve done 6 weeks back. Problem is, that if I am wearing a bra, it constricts my stomach/general area so much so I can barely eat one bite of food every 4-5 hours. That too when I move around a lot during those 4-5 hours - otherwise it just feels like it is stuck in my oesophagus. I know it is the bra’s constriction because eating is not that difficult when i don’t have it on. My questions are: 1. Has anyone felt the constriction because of a bra as well? I wear a very loose sports bra and the band is tight at all. 2. Apart from the usual restriction that is expected after a gastric sleeve, does eating eventually get a little easier?

When can I chug my water down my throat!!?? Help lol
summerseeker replied to PauleeB's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The dry mouth especially when you wake up is a awful sensation isnt it. So worse than waking full of a cold and having slept with your mouth open to breath because your nose is blocked. Just keep doing your best with the liquids and one day you will find its not a chore to drink anymore. Popsicles were my go to. I can do 3 gulps now at 12 weeks out. Happy drinking -
Hi Nat theres so many great private options in the U.K. and yes it’s a lot of money! And a loan I will be paying for the next three years. But I’m so happy! I don’t regret it one bit. (Had my surgery July 2021 and i reached target weight feb 5th - total loss of 6 stone) i got a loan via my bank as the finance offering was better than the finance options the hospital was doing. So I would say just shop around for that. also I interviewed three surgeons from three of the top named hospitals before I decided which one I felt was best for me. so spend some time researching the market. I went with Mr Sutton at woodlands hospital - part of the Ramsey group. I’ve had no problems at all. After care team was top level, no complications, surgery was quick, team were amazing. No complaints one bit!! i highly recommend. Paid £10k with 2 years after care from surgeon and team and a lifetime support line (dietitian)x

I just have water. Ask for a slice of lemon or lime so people don’t immediately think you’re just drinking water. In time you may be able to tolerate/be allowed to have some carbonation (sparkling water, soda water). You can stir it vigorously so some of the carbonation reduces & if you take it slowly a lot will abate as you sip. I went out for a ladies lunch last week & two of us just had water while the others all had wine or champagne. It’s certainly cheaper 😉. It can be a bit of a change of mind set initially if you’re used to drinking alcohol or carbonated drinks when you go out. Honestly, I sometimes had an alcoholic drink if I went out when I was past month 2 of the losing phase. I would have one glass & sip for literally hours & it was only about once a month.

I was offered coffee in hospital the first night. It was a couple of weeks before I actually wanted coffee again, but a daily soy latte is my little treat. It definitely seems to be a "thing" for some surgeons, but thankfully mine has never put brakes on coffee. That it's not a universal thing would definitely make me question it if I was told "no".
