    Nutrition

It is very normal to only get in that amount of calories. The Protein is what is most important. I was fortunate that I could drink protein shakes, Premier, I still drink one every AM, and I am almost 4 months out. 30gms per shake. Have you tried the protein powders, I like Bariatric Advantage, 27gms protein, and I add blueberries, or banana, flavored yogurt, fat free milk of any kind, etc. Some people really like the unjury drinks, 40gms of protein per serving. I was fortunate to get in my protein from the first week, and I think it will make a difference in how well you heal and how you feel. Try whatever you can to meet the 70-80gms of protein a day, at least that was the requirement for me in my program. I am now up to 100-120gms a day. Good luck

    Snack after dinner

I make up a batch of protein Greek yogurt at the beginning of the week and have some each evening, usually with a tablespoon or two of low-sugar granola or crushed nuts.

    Snack after dinner

I don't snack all of the time, but when I am really feeling the hunger these are my go to snacks: Fresh fruit, a cheese stick, small protein shake or smoothie, an egg, yogurt... Basically anything light that doesn't have very high calories. My goal is to not get full, but just eat enough to curb the hunger.

    Snack after dinner

A piece of fresh fruit, yogurt, cheese sticks, cottage cheese, cheese (can you tell I like cheese), peanut butter, pudding, protein shake, and similar.

    What’s Your Restaurant Secret?

Tapas! My husband and I love restaurants that have Protein based tapas and we share. Usually we still have leftovers! If tapas are not something on the menu, I will look close at Soups and salads. Breakfast is the worst for me because I cannot eat eggs. You can usually find a yogurt parfait but they can be dangerous because restaurants like to add very sugary fruit to them. If I cannot find anything for breakfast I will go for a plain crepe with sf syrup and bacon or sausage. There is very little flour in a crepe and for some reason I can tolerate all the egg in one.

I need food! 7 days post op

I am on clear liquids but wk 2 and the list saI'd work toward yogurt & oatmeal so, I did.
  7. Well I am just over 12 weeks out. It depends on what I am eating and what time of day. Breakfast is one egg and 1/4 cup of tuna and I can eat half then 1 hour later the other half. Lunch I can have 1/2 cup yogurt with protein powder and I am comfortably full. Dinner is normally 3.5 ounces of protein(chicken, fish) and about 2 tablespoons of veggies. No way could I do one cup of anything right now not even creamy soup!
  8. Thanksgiving was my first real "food-focused" holiday so I was able to start putting into practice what I planned. I did this for the 4th of July and other celebrations, too. Protein first, recording my food, and meeting protein and Fluid goals are non-negotiable. After that I didn't completely restrict my eating. I ate turkey. I had small portions of things I really love. I had a tablespoon each of dressing, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes. I even had a small slice of pumpkin pie. I ate slowly and the enjoyed the conversation. The day after I even had a 'Smore around the fire pit. That was great because I hadn't had one in years because I was "dieting". Even indulging, my calories stayed pretty low because I had Premier Protein, Greek yogurt and cheese sticks on hand.

What to do about extended release capsule medications?

@@talking mountain - I also took effexor ER capsules. I'm not sure which surgery you had. I had the sleeve. I opened the capsule and poured it into my medicine cup shot glass full of vitamin water zero and shot it down the hatch. I would have to take about 2 more shots of vitamin water to get all the little pellets down. It was far from ideal but I had been taking it for years so I think I had a decent level in my system when I started. Not sure if you are pre or post op but I started taking mine right in the hospital. One thing to be aware of though is that one of the side effects of effexor and one of the reasons they put it in a capsule to begin with was because of nausea as a side effect. So I always took the effexor at least 20 minutes after my zofran (anti nausea med) and preferably after I had some protein shake, yogurt or other to coat my stomach. After about 8-9 weeks post op I took everything in its original form (capsule in the case of effexor). I stayed on the zofran for about a month. Once I started mushy foods, I just took it after I ate my cottage cheese breakfast. I hope this helps.

    Shakes: liquid or puree?

It's not about nutritional value or calories....soda and fruit juice and koolaid have loads of calories but they are definitely liquid. It's about physical state and how it passes through your sleeve. My surgeon said if I can drink it through a straw it is a liquid. For example, drinkable yogurt like Siggis or kefir were liquids but Greek yogurt was a puree. Protein shakes are liquids, and you will actually absorb the protein better if you drink them slowly throughout the day.

    Meal ideas

During the pureed stage you should be having soft foods, be careful of ground meats or any meats even though you can puree them they can be hard to digest. Stick with canned meats, soft fishes, tuna, cottage cheese, scrambled eggs(love eggs eat one very day!). yogurt and of course your protein drink. What I have been having now everyday for lunch is 1/2 cup yogurt with a scoop of protein powder, delicious! Careful trying to consume veggies at this point as you probably are still trying to fit in all of your protien which at this stage is the most important. FYI: ricotta is not very high in protein per serving size I would substitute cottage cheese.

    Soft foods!

I also had surgery 11/18/15 and my list says week 1 & 2 liquids & work your way to yogurt & oatmeal. Week 3 & 4 eggs, tuna, soft flaky fish, mashed & gravey, soft veggies & other software foods. Week 5, have 3 full meals & 2 Protein Snacks. But I'm noticing some ppl eating soft foods like eggs week 2 instead of wk 3.

Stray Observations a Few Days Out...

Same here! Two weeks out and feeling pretty much normal (besides being extra sleepy and missing food. :/) When do you start "normal" foods? I have another week of full liquids left. Before surgery I never appreciated the great variety of light Yoplait yogurt flavors lol.

    December 21st surgery

Congratulations on being approved for surgery! As @@rking said every surgeon seems to have a different protocol so it's best to follow the plan given to you by yours. My surgeon did not allow caffeine for 8 weeks following surgery so I used the pre-op period to wean myself off of coffee. I'm back on it now but was able to consume some decaf after the first couple of weeks which helped. As far as post-op groceries, again I would refer to any documents given you by your surgeon or nutritionist (NUT). Every plan is different. Many doctors have patients progress slowly through the phases of Clear liquids, full liquids, pureed foods, soft foods and regular foods while others progress more quickly. For certain you will need some good choices for broth, Protein shakes, sugar free popsicles and then progressing to sugar free applesauce, fat free yogurt and cream Soups. The most important item, immediately post-surgery is to maintain your Fluid intake. For the first few days to a week after surgery hydration is more important than nutrition. If your experience is like mine you'll be challenged to get liquids in for a few days, then the post-surgery swelling will ease and liquids will be easier. I found that getting various flavors of Crystal Light helped a great deal rather than just drinking Water.

    Surgery Dec 1st

I found it is so much of a mind set. I did pretty well on my liquid pre op diet but I did cheat. Once I saw it wasn't going to kill me I handled it pretty well. I never did think I was starving. Now post op and eating cream of wheat, dressing, yogurt, mashed taters. I'm glad thanksgiving is over. Now I can concentrate on low carbs and high protein and do what I'm supposed to do.
  18. I had seafood for my turkey dinner and my desert was Dannon Greek yogurt then I also went to the gym and work out for one hour and went to the gym after the holiday . The gym makes me feel good and I do not feel bad about not eating unhealthy because if there is something that I want I will have a spoon of it but sweets are a big turn off for me and I always remember protein first .
  19. I am 3wks post op and I've been lactose intolerant since surgery day. The episodes can be really bad if I drink a protein shake that has lactose in it. Even yogurt which usually doesn't have much lactose can set me off. I did find a protein powder that worked for me. It's syntrax. It's both lactose free and gluten free and it sits really well after surgery for me. The twisted cherry flavor has been my lifesaver. I can't say enough good things about it.
  20. I was told by surgeon not to swallow pills whole until 3 months out. When I had one of my post op appointments he said go ahead and try swallowing the capsule that was beyond bitter. I was about 2 months out then. One night I did and got an excruciating pain below chest, radiating to stomach and back, just like a gallbladder attack, except I do not have a gallbladder. It lasted abut 2 hours. spoke with the on call doc, he said sounded like pills got stuck g back to crushing them. I am now almost 4 months out and have been swallowing my pills for about a month. last night, i got that excruciating pain again. This time lasted about an hour. I had not overeaten for Thanksgiving, was very proud of what and how much I ate. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this, pain, stuck pills, anything. I messaged my doc this AM, but do not even know if they are open today. So for today I am mostly doing liquids and very soft stuff like yogurt and cottage cheese.
  21. Great batch of turkey vegi soup. Tomatoes, onions, sriracha sauce, left over green Beans. Season with some other holiday favorites. Took entire turkey carcass and all the elements I used for stuffing the bird, put in Water overnight, strained it today. Added more left over turkey meat. But used some fage yogurt and made it creamy just before my first bowl. Highly recommended.

I need food! 7 days post op

My Dr said I can have oatmeal & yogurt. I made oatmeal, almost soupy & I ate with a baby spoon. I was content for a good whole. Need a good protein tho that won't leave a chalky taste...one that can go in soup & shakes etc.
  23. Well, lessened learned here, that's why we post these things I made this: http://www.delish.com/cooking/recipe-ideas/recipes/a33955/orange-cranberry-relish-recipe-wdy1112/ It goes great with vanilla yogurt, I mean REALLY good
  24. Broth, herbal tea, greek yogurt, At least 2 weeks worth of protein drinks/powder/shakes. A USB mug warmer to keep things hot while you slowly sip.
  25. Good luck! My surgery was 11/23. I feel ok today, still sore. I'm on full liquids for 2 weeks. Greek yogurt seems to go down best for me. My shakes tasted horrible to me post op. I plan to try them again in a couple days. They also have Greek yogurt frozen treats that have lots of protein in them. Those and sugarfree Popsicles go down without pain now. Sugarfree pudding has been good too. I think I've had an easier time with thicker liquids than thin.
