    Three meals-or snacks as well?

I have been told that at 5 weeks I should be eating 3 meals and 2 snacks...then dropping it back to 3 meals after 6 weeks... I don't know if i'll be able to cope but I figure once I get the fill then the band will help me keep it to those 3 meals per day!

    1/2 Way there

Congrats, I had my surgery 1 Day before u, at Roosevelt hospital in n.y.c, if I lost 91 pounds in 15 weeks, I would jump so high and hit the ceiling! I guest it's true that men lose faster than women, keep up the good work.

    Question on Food and Calories

Personally, I was never told to avoid certain foods. It was suggested that certain foods can aggravate the normal function of the stomach and may cause problems. The OJ I drink is Organic and I juice it myself so it does not have as high an acidic content as some of the processed juices. Adding the amount to the smoothie shouldn't hurt you. Try it if you find your stomach is burning more then try Apple Juice or pineapple Juice. I always encourage everyone to juice the ORGANIC fruits and veggies yourself. You get the most bang for your buck and the fruits and veggies are safer as well. Free of pesticides that can leach into them. And by cracky they just taste better. Sweeter if you will. Not nearly as tart as the processed juices. Crackers are a starchy food and to me that is something I would just avoid as much as possible. But if you love them and can eat them then go for it just in moderation. Like maybe two or three but no more. I can't do breads anymore and that is just fine with me. LOL!!

    Question on Food and Calories

gunn4ya I can tell you that the low fat crackers are actually on my mushy food stage list that my dr. gave me. Also some have said that they can't eat cream of wheat cause it wasn't on their liquid stage but it is on my list also. I haven't had any problems with bananas but I would definatly make sure you mash them really good so as not to get choked. Also my dr instructions just said that acidic foods should be avoided for the first 6 to 8 weeks to ensure that the band and stomach were healed but it did not say that I wasn't allowed Orange juice at all. just for several weeks. Of course check with your dr first he may say differently!!

Does Calorie Switching work? Plateau again

You know what, Nance . . . I had a feeling that was going to be the case. Darn it all . . . . that mushy stage just had me eating too many carbs, I think. I had a really difficult time cutting them out during that stage. And I *know* I'm one of those people that just does not tolerate carbs well. I've just never been able to restrict myself to such low calories before like I am able to with this band (even unfilled), so I thought the low calories would be enough. I am going to try cutting out some carbs this week. I'm also waiting for that blasted time of the month and I'm hoping it will help me release all of this Water I seem to be retaining, too.
  8. Hi, My package was submitted to Cigna last week Thursday and it finally came in today - APPROVED!!!! I am so excited and can't wait. I have a scheduled pre-op with my surgeon next week Fri - the 19th with a June 29 Surgery date. They will start me on my pre-op diet of 7 days prior to surgery since I am close to the 40 bmi marker OMG! I'm so excited and I can't believe the date is finally here. It was 3 months for me and things went rather smoothly. Anyone else scheduled for the same day?
  9. I will have been banded for a week this coming tuesday and i have been following everything by the book when it comes to the diet an been walking for an hour a day and i feel as though nothing has changed with myself looks wise and im getting very discouraged. Please help:sad:
  10. Well, just came from my PCP's office and I am a fuming!!! He just informed me that he considers my weight loss surgery a miserable failure and he's not going to recommend it to anyone else. I've been hovering between 216/217 For the last few days. Well, I didn't take my normal water pill that I take daily because I don't like to take it until 'm home and near the bathroom. Anyhow, I weighed 220 on his scale this morning which of course I was upset over as well. I was OK until he called me a failure at this WLS and he also said it's ridiculous if you have to keep going for fills and you're still not losing fast enough. Well, I had enough of his negative talk and blasted back that I am not a failure and considering when I first saw him many years ago I was 289. I started my lapband journey at 267 on 12/28/12. I said I've still lost weight and that is what counts. Last time I saw him 3 months ago I wanted to cry because he felt I had not lost weight fast enough (at that point I was down 37 lbs. according to his scale I'm ONLY down 47 lbs and that's not good enough. I should be losing 2 lbs a week, every week according to Dr. "DOOM"! Anyway, I didn't feel like crying this time. This time I wanted to scratch his eyes out. I've still lost 10 lbs in a 12 week period. I still haven't taken my water pill yet but taking that pill makes me lose 4 lbs like in a 12 hr period. Hey, I'm proud of my weight loss and I'm not going to let anyone steal my thunder especially my PCP! I've had many NSV's as well like fitting in smaller clothing, being able to walk more in the stores, etc . If my PCP knew how serious I am with my calories etc., maybe he'd get rid of that negative attitude of his. As far as I'm concerned my PCP is the failure! Not me! I'm still fuming but I'll calm down after awhile. They say 3 strikes and your out. Well, considering the fact he's not a BARIATRIC doctor, I'm giving him one more chance. In Nov. I'll have my 3rd visit with my PCP, if he so much as suggests I'm a failure again, that will be my last visit with him. I already have a new PCP in mind and he's about a mile from my house so I could walk there Just letting everyone considering the lapband, that I love my my band! I may be a slow loser but at least I'm losing. Don't let any doctor talk you out of it. I think all PCP's should all take a course in bariatric medicine before they judge anyone.
  11. I have been hungry since I started this pre op diet on Mon. I am day 5 of my 14 day pre op diet. My stomach seems to growl a lot. The protein shakes only keep me full about an hour. I am eating 2 protein shakes( I have 1 with skim milk and the other with fruit) and 1 nutritional bar, 4 oz of lean meat, 1 cup of green vegetables, 2 cups of broth and 2 or 3 sugar free popcicles. This adds up to 800 calories. I am supposed to have between 700 and 900 calories. The only way not to feel hungry is to keep eating. I am drinking more than 64 oz of water but water doesn't seem to fill me up at all. Since I have lost 10 lbs in 4 days, I think I may not be eating enough. Next week I am supposed to have 5 protein shakes a day which is 700 calories. It will get up to 900 calories if I add skim milk or fruit. I guess my question is: Are any of you this hungry on your pre op diet?

    How to slow weight loss

It will slow down naturally. My first 3-4 weeks were big numbers. Then I averaged 2 lbs a week which is totally normal rate. And it doesn't draw unwanted attention if you're keeping your procedure private.

    How to slow weight loss

Hit the 3 week stall :(

But otherwise, how are you doing? Has the three weeks been tough or are you feeling okay? I am getting a little anxious about it all.
  15. Hello all! I was directed to this site by my surgeon. She is part of a very comprehensive bariatric program based out of Shady Grove Hospital in Maryland. I had my first pre-op consultation last week, and am in the beginning stages of getting all my testing done. I have Federal Blue Cross insurance, and am told it is a piece of cake to get this procedure approved through them, with no "red tape" so to speak. Im very excited to finally have this surgery done (have been looking into WLS for over 15 years). Im still on the fence about whether to do RNY or LapBand though- and could sure use any personal stories, research links, ect to help me decide. Im worried the LapBand wont help me... My pitfalls seem to be skipping meals (sometimes I wont eat all day), sweets, and/or eating after a certain time of day (I sometimes like to have Cereal at about 8pm). Im never hungry as it is, and try to eat healthy... But, Ive always been overweight- even as a child that grew up in a very restricted home (no sweets, soda, chips, junk of any type). Im currently 5'10" and 290lbs. I am 18 months post partum with my only child, and have not been doing anything to loose the "baby" weight until now since I was breast feeding. Before my pregnancy I was 270lbs. In any case- to me, my appearance is a bonus on this road. Im scared of dying prematurely and leaving my husband and daughter. The though consumes me... I want to break a family cycle of the women in my family dying of heart disease at an ever increasingly young age. My cholesterol is slightly elevated, as is my BP- and that was enough for me to want to make a permanent change. So after many years of battling my weight and yo-yoing, Im ready for some help... I hope to find lots of great information and support here!

    Insurance ?

I have Meritain Health (a company of Aetna) and am currently in the 4th month of weight loss management. With my plan, they require me to have a medical rehablition consultant for case management. I was just assigned to a consultant (she is sooo nice) and she has been helping with my case. Unfortunatly i was only able to get in a few quetions before she left this week for vacay, but she has been a big help with answers! I know that Meritain will cover VSG, but my case manager is going by Medicare Standards to review for necessity. Medicare does view the VSG as investigational, but she said we may be able to use other criteria for this form of surgery. My requirements our as follows *Must be at least 18 years old *BMI of 40 or higher that has persisted for at least 3 years or *BMI of 35 and less then 40 with (a list) comorbidities... *Must have continued to be obese despite partcipation in a supervised weight management program for at least 6 consecutive months. The program should incorporate nutritional counseling, behavioral modification, and approprieat reqular physical activity *Participate in multi disciplinary preoperative evaluations as identified by a physician and or nurse case manager. I am 24 years old (check) BMI 46.7 (check) I am on my 4th month of WLM and im still obese (obviously with my bmi so high! ) (check) I have had a gym membership for a few years now, and i go a couple times a week, and nightly walks (how am i to prove that?) now for the behavior modification, nutritional counseling.... dont know how to check this off this list yet... perop evals? dont know how to meet this yet either I live in Alaska, and have chosen Dr. Hunter with Virginia Mason in Washington state. So far I have been in contact with his nurse Steve, and he has been a MAJOR help with my flood of questions. I have a consultation/ nutritionist/pyschologist meetings lined up in July I hope these will check a few off my list of requirments LOL As far as prices - Dr Hunters nurse Steve says about $16000.00 out of pocket but her refferd me to VM billing and they gave me an estimate of about $35000.00- $45000.00 billed to insurrance, I believe my plan with meritain covers 80%-90% and I think there is a $20000.00 break point. Now if i could find my out of pocket/after insurrace amount that would be helpful! Hope this helped a little, I have a hard time finding info/answers in these forums for Meritain Good Luck with your journey!!!

    Where Is My Groove???

sometimes the body gets too used to a routine and finds out how to do things with minimal calorie burns. Where you on a pre-op diet prior to surgery and did you continue that diet after? Are you doing the same exercise or switching it up? Do you keep track of your food intake or just do a rough estimate? sometimes, strangely, the body needs more calories than you are giving it to lose weight. I would recommend strictly journaling your food for a week to find how much is being consumed and then try eating a little bit more and see if that helps. Also make sure to get your minimum of 60-80g protein.

    Where Is My Groove???

I was the same. I had my surgery a little over a month before you, and I lost during pre-op diet and the 3 or 4 weeks post-op, and then it stopped. I got several fills and nothing. At least I didn't gain, but I didn't lose either. Then at the beginning of January I was suddenly STARVING and had to fight my body over that. Finally saw the doctor at the beginning of this month and got the fill that made all the difference... I've lost over 1kg a week since then. Keep checking in with your doctor, and keep getting fills until you get the right restriction - it WILL happen!

    Early stall? Is this common?

Oh yeah. I'm right there with you. This morning was my first movement downwards in 6 days. I was sleeved on 4/5, dropped 17 lbs in the first 2 weeks and then stalled out. I didn't do anything different during that time. Just pretended it wasn't happening.

Well, the it's finally the 11th.

Thanks so much guys! I'm on the high Protein, low carb diet as well. For Breakfast, I just fixed 2 eggs and 3 slices of Canadian Bacon. I imagine I'll be having a lot of that during the next 2 weeks, as well as chicken and tuna. Haha I'm not too creative with food. I just feel lucky that I'm not on the Clear liquids diet that some people have to go on. The surgery is on the 25th. Only 14 days, I can't believe it's almost here!
  21. Hello all, I'm new to this group, and only one month post op. I'm curious to know if it is normal to feel hungry all the time! I had my first fill last week, I feel hungry all the time, I haven't felt full since surgery. I feel like I can eat anything I want. Is this typical?? Thanks, Lori

    One month post op!

Hi I had my surgery on 9 Feb and I'm feeling a little frustrated because I also haven't had any change in my appetite. I'm eating less because I'm making a concerted effort to do so, but am feeling no restriction from the band. I'm learning that my expectations may have been unreasonable. I also understand (and am hopeful) that this will change once I've had my fills. My first is in 3 weeks. Good luck!
  23. Hi team I am just home from a brief pacific island holiday (scuba pics coming later!) and the holiday showed me an interesting thing about my eating. I am 3.5 months post op, and I gotta tell ya, it has been a dream run. Surgery, recovery, weight loss - all smooth and damned near effortless. I don’t really get hungry (a few days of that early but not since). I can eat pretty much most stuff I want, but have had a couple of dumping episodes from sugar and luckily I really don’t want it! I am on strictly three meals a day - I start with protein and am loving finding delicious protein treats - like the 6 thin slices of tuna carpaccio in the islands! Yum! Then I finish with greens, veggies, salad. Very happy, no serious temptations. I sort of miss my nemesis - potato crisps - but have discovered baked veggie crisps, and two or three beetroot crisps makes me crunch-satisfied on the odd occasion when I want crisps. So - off on this holiday, imagine my surprise to suddenly get real cravings. First - the airline club lounge - really wanted my old staple, chocolate coated shortbread with my coffee. Just noticed it and resisted. Then, had a hotel overnight before international flight - minibar yelled at me all bloody evening. Chocolate, crisps, chocolate almonds, cider, coke! And then, onto the flight, and the seat screen just kept shouting “Snack bar! Ooh, pringles. M&Ms. Do it, do it”. 3 hours of resisting - had a beerstick lunch - low carb, good protein... Anyway, I was just surprised at the “location” triggers for those old eating habits. Resisting was ok, but I realised that I will need willpower on an ongoing basis - I had sorta assumed I was in a more secure place re food temptations. The only answer, obviously: very very regular pacific island scuba diving holidays...
  24. Hey your surgery is one day before mine :clap2:, yaaaay. My Dr. has me on a 2 week pre-op all liquid with 1 low fat meal per day.
  25. Has anyone been sleeved by Dr. Kuzinkovas? I'm having my sleeve done with him in 3 weeks. How was it for you?
