    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

    I was told to stop my Prenatal a week before and start it again a week after. Not told to use a chewable. Then the calcium and b-12 are to be started at 6 weeks post op. I'm starting my liquid diet Monday and was given gabapentin to start 3 days before and a nausea patch for the night before to keep on the day of as well.     My hunger didn’t come back for ages - more than a year. Up until recently I still often had times I wasn’t hungry but now hardly ever which is sad. I also wasn’t interested in eating for a few months after surgery. I ate to a routine - stuck to three meals a day because I realised I needed to eat for my body to function. My calorie intake was pretty low for a while - barely 900 calories at 6 months & starting maintenance & was often less. Eating to a routine did help change my relationship with food a lot. I looked at food for the nutritional benefit it would give me rather than for any other thing (comfort or soothe, or some other emotional reason, etc.). Food still had to be tasty because if it wasn’t I wouldn’t eat it or eat much of it. It may take time to see what foods you easily tolerate. Don’t be afraid to eat a small rotation of food options to begin.

    I told some people but not others. When I took up a new work contract 4 weeks after surgery they just presumed it was a ‘female surgery’ which I never corrected cause they didn’t have to know. You could say you’ve been having some digestive issues so they did an exploratory but found nothing untoward. You’re being very careful with your diet to see if that helps. Whatever story you go with for those super inquisitive people (we all know those people) just be comfortable with it. All the best with your surgery.

    I only told my husband, mother, son, and his girlfriend. It got kind of dicey because I ended up in the hospital an extra week. I didn’t go out to dinner with the rest of the family during the liquids and soft food phases. Now I can eat regular food and I get a to go box and take most of it home or just get an appetizer.

    It is scary and the first week is the worst. Once you’re into the regular food stage, it gets pretty easy and you forget about the unpleasant first days.
  7. I just checked my monthly weight records. I just did it by the month, not the week (at least in my Excel spreadsheet), so this isn't exactly 11 weeks, but at the three-month mark, I'd lost 39 lbs. You're not quite at three months, but you will be in another week or two. So we're roughly the same. And I started out well over 300 lbs.

    Final Choice

    Sleeve here you need to look at what is rite for you , how much weight you need tk loose and so on I had sleeve I was 100 lbs. over weight I’ve lost 40% in 2 months this was rite for me but have a friend that got sleeve also 1 week before me I think she should had done the bypass she is much larger then me and is eating way to much. So you need to be honest with your team and see what is best for you , you can always get sleeve and go back if it wasn’t rite but you can’t go to just a sleeve from a bypass.
  10. Gigi I am almost exactly 3 months post op and I have lost 33lbs. I'm sure you know that SO many things affect the rate at which we lose weight - starting weight, age, hormones, fitness level, exercise level - not just calorie intake. I already see my loss slowing down but I am in this for the long haul. People who hit a long stall will try to increase protein, increase calories, try a different exercise regime - maybe upper body only for you - or even resistance bands to try to build a bit of muscle? In any case you shouldn't be bummed - you've lost a significant amount of weight, you're already way healthier, and if you stick to your programme you're likely to lose even more.

    If it makes you feel better: since posting that I’ve completely stalled and have gotten insane stomach cramps. I’m going to the Dr on Monday because it hurts so much. Hang in there! From everything I read and heard it’s the once that lose “slow” and steady that are the most successful long term!
  12. I learned about these from a grocery haul video on YouTube. If you remember the old Teddy Grahams from the 1990's (do they still make those?) they remind me of those or kinda like animal crackers. They're called KODIAK BEAR BITES and they are graham crackers in three flavors: Chocolate, Honey, or Cinnamon. They are adorable and I even like the design of the box, as if that was important. A single serving (as if you could eat just one serving!) is 15 crackers, for 120 calories, 17 carbs, 2 fibers, 5 g protein, and 3.5 g fat.

    Thank you! Yeah, I don't know if I had screwed up my metabolism or what...but I was workin my tail off and getting nowhere! Then I would give up, eat whatever I wanted for a week, gain another 10 pounds, and start the cycle all over again. Good luck with your surgery! You will be amazed at how quick it comes off!   14. I had my one week post op appointment today. I am down 16 pounds since my pre op appointment on 1/28. My doctor had me eat an egg before my appointment today to see how I tolerated it. I did okay. So, he wants me to transition to two Protein Shakes a day and one puréed “meal” (2 ounces) starting tomorrow. He really drove home the importance of 64 ounces of Water each day. (I have been hitting 48-56 a day). He said I could go back to work on Monday but to be very aware that my energy level will likely be low. So, I am pleased with the appointment and look forward to going back in a month!

    Amazing progress! Good job! So funny you said that about the CrossFit workouts! I’m now 7 1/2 months in pre-op. Stepped it up to CrossFit 4-5 days a week from 3 and since I hit the 10% loss I’ve gone nowhere and even gained about 5 pounds back! I can’t figure it out. Eat more, eat less, who knows! Gives me hope that surgery really will help!

    I like to capture myself in the ring camera. The first photo was about 2 weeks ago and the second was about in June 2021. I had surgery in August 2021. 70 pounds down. Best decision I ever made to have surgery. In the June photo, I was restricting calories, doing insane crossfit workouts every day and getting nowhere. Life is so much easier now.   17. it's not that uncommon the first few weeks after surgery when you're healing and your stomach is pretty sensitive. You'll learn through trial & error that there are some things it won't tolerate - but in most cases, it'll eventually tolerate those things again - it's just the initial sensitivity. but beyond that, no - throwing up a lot is pretty unusual. I probably throw up maybe three or four times a year - really not that much more often than I did pre-surgery. And mine is usually due to the fact I overate. So...you learn... also, like someone else said, throwing up after surgery is different than before. First of all, your stomach is so small that there's not much in there to throw up - and also, there's not nearly as much acid in there, so you don't get that awful taste in your mouth. Let's just say it's a lot less "unpleasant" now. I don't dread it as much as I used to. btw - almost seven years out here - and after the first month or so, I rarely throw up.

    I thought the same when I went for my first consult last March and fully intended to be self-pay. My BMI was also 37 and I have Anthem BCBS. But my center encouraged submitting to insurance based on my high blood pressure and blood work that came back pre-diabetes. Several weeks later, I was approved. Shocked, but very happy to have saved $15K+. It is worth submitting to insurance...you have nothing to lose as you are already prepared to be self-pay and a lot to gain. Good Luck!

    Agree with everything @lizonaplane said. I have a regimen for Miralax - every other day. If things are really regular I will extend to 1x every three days but find every other works well without getting too far the other direction! I also agree on the hot drinks. I mix it in tea and it dissolves immediately, no flavor, it's great. I would try it out and if you like it, you can get large containers of generic Miralax at Costco or any of those club-type stores.
  20. People the consipation is real. Green veggies or no green veggies, fiber or no fiber, laxative or no laxative. The struggle is soooooo very real. What can I do to get some kinda regular???? Hell I will settle for once or twice a week!!

Only my close family members knew about my RNY, and the day of the procedure my extended cousins from the country and outside came pouring in with questions and i became famous for that week. But then you have those that are jealous and think you're cheating.     This has not been my experience. At first (say the first three months) I had to be quite careful about how much I ate. I only vomited once or twice, and it was entirely due to my eating too much, too fast. Now weighing out food and eating more slowly has become second nature, and I simply don't have that issue.
  23. I have my surgery scheduled for 3/2... The anxiousness is keeping me up at night wondering if I am making the right decision.. or am I setting myself up to get sick for the rest of my life. I have been doing my research and reading posts from many different support groups all over the internet and there are some horrific stories out there are people that can't get food down.. or they throw up every time they eat meat ETC.. for me I could deal with it coming out the other end not to be graphic but the thought of vomiting for the rest of my life has me absolutely petrified and questioning should I take the chance.. Please share your experience from having gastric bypass... I understand the first couple weeks will be rough.. And I can imagine that others have struggled because they possibly didn't follow what their doctor recommends.. But to think you do all the right things and you still get sick has me worried...     Recovering from gallbladder surgery took me about 2 days (just had mine out on Thursday) and isn’t a great cover story. If you are getting a hernia repaired that’s a)not lying and b) much more similar in terms of recovery since it’s a rougher surgery and affects what you can eat for weeks. I didn’t tell anyone at first and then had complications post surgery that made it really obvious it was a bigger surgery than I had let on. So now my family knows. But I’m still glad it kept it to myself at first. Arguing with me pre surgery is more fun than after I’ve already done it and lost 50 lbs. 😅
