Just starting my 6 month supervised diet
kyrickchick64 replied to jazzNjoeywebb's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Welcome. It depends on a lot of things. And you need to discuss it worth your doctor. I am having the vertical sleeve(vsg) on March 2nd. For me after research on here and online I liked it cause I wasn't completely rerouting my system and I have allot of weight to lose. Im only doing this once so I don't want a band revision in the future so that's one of the reasons I didn't choose the band. The surgery is a tool. How much our little you lose will depend on you and your body. If you eat things you shouldn't then you won't lose as much. If you stick to a high protein low carb diet then you should do well -
Just got approval!! Any October sleevers out there?

Hi October surgery buds, I'm scheduled for Oct 16. I'm having revision surgery from lapband to mini-gastric bypass. Looking forward to the journey with you all. *waves hello from Ireland* Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app -
The same thing is going on with mine, I have no fill but yet I get acid reflux daily especially at night. My surgeon wants to remove it and let me rest for 8 weeks before doing any type of revision. At this point I don't know what to do because I'm afraid this whole acid reflux stuff will follow me. So how do you feel without the band? I'm hoping it is intant relief for me...I'm on protonix 40mg 2 times a day and that does absolutely nothing for me ???? Sent from my SM-G900P using the BariatricPal App

Perspectives on Losing Fast & Slow

Thank you for sharing that. That's really helpful. I don't have my surgery date yet but I'm in the last leg of my approval process and i know my process will be a long road too. When i attended the class for the RNY surgery i felt uncomfortable just because i felt others were wondering why are you here. I am a revision patient due to GERD and the damage it's caused internally. I need to lose at least 90lbs and to me that's a significant amount. But to others not so much. So i fully understand that we all have different journeys. I guess the important thing is to know your journey, don't get discourage when others lose weight at a faster pace than us and celebrate each accomplishment. After what feels like a long and strenuous journey, I finally have a surgery date! I am so excited. (And a little nervous). This past month has been super challenging, and I've sometimes wondered if I should be getting surgery right now. I feel guilty because my husband has stage 4 metastatic kidney cancer. He will be starting a new cancer drug, and I will be out of town for close to a week for the surgery. He is fine about me having the surgery, though. He knows I need to get healthy. Anyway!!! Who else is having surgery in March or the end of February? And did I mention the surgery is the day after my birthday? I am asking my family for ramekins (custard cups), tiny sauce cups, dip bowls, appetizer plates and silverware, and whatever else I find might be good to have in my post surgery life. My surgery is at St. Lukes in Phoenix, and My doc is Dr. Juarez. I'm having an open gastric bypass revising an old 1989 stomach stapling.

Hi Sarah, and welcome to VST. We're all here for you throughout your journey, and I wish you the very best. I had the band and it was a nightmare. Luckily, I was able to revise to the sleeve, and I'm living a very normal, healthy life. If you have any questions, or concerns, feel free to post away. Someone will have an answer for you ! ! ! -
Yikes--has this psychiatrist had any prior experience with bariatric surgery clearances? I guess it would also matter quite a bit exactly what the two sentence write-up said, but in any case, that's no way to evaluate someone's emotional/mental preparation for major surgery. I'd say you definitely need a second opinion--the last thing you want is this doctor revising the writeup and adding something worse, or not improving their first effort at all!

Any teachers in here?!?
myjourneyagain replied to NJE123's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree but Christmas break would probably be better because that's 2 full weeks. I thought I was going to have to have mine originally during that time because I'm having a revision from band to RNY, but because my band didn't slip I'm blessed to be having everything Done on the 15th. Summer is perfect for recovery. I hope things work out for you! #teachersrock -
Severely depressed after mini gastric bypass
YumiMumi replied to mmy's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
@mmy I'm so SO sorry you have had this experience, how traumatic. I think that it was borderline negligent of your surgeon to discuss changing procedures with you on the day of surgery rather than allow you the time to think it over. Having said that, I too have read that the sleeve can be less effective in some circumstances, but I think the level of complication for both procedures is similar - just different. I think what is important for you now is to focus on the future. I KNOW how hard that is. I am 2 weeks post op gastric bypass (revision from failed band taken out 3 months ago). I didn't vomit blood but I did have a very tough first week (see other posts of mine) and on day 3/4/5 had MASSIVE buyers remorse (as a lot of people do). I can tell you though, that even though it was (and still is some days) a struggle for various reasons (getting enough Protein in, nausea, fatigue, etc), I am now glad I had the courage to do this. I am a similar BMI to you and super happy to be down 20 pounds already. I have a 3 year old and I want him to grow up knowing me as a fit an healthy mother. I know its hard but hang in there. I suspect you would have been going through "buyers remorse" no matter what procedure you had - sleeve or bypass. But, you have the bypass now so get excited and start visualizing the new YOU. TRUST ME.... you WILL feel better, and quickly.... both emotionally and physically. Big hugs to you. -
Hi, I hate to sound like I'm whining, because I really am happy I'm approved for surgery on July 12th, but since I've been with my surgeon through a lap band and now scheduled for a revision to the sleeve, I'm finding I'm angry. My surgeon orders everyone, band and sleeves, be on Clear liquids not only for 2 weeks before but 4 weeks after surgery. As you know that's 6 weeks. I was wondering if anyone else has such a strict doctor? When I read others have only 1 week of clear liquids and 1 week of full liquids, I get angry. I'm just hoping that after the surgery I won't want to eat and it will be fine. I know one reason my lap band failed was because I didn't always follow the rules, so I'm trying to be so good. I'm currently in my 2 weeks pre-op liquid diet and I'm finding it hard, very hard. I even failed a couple of times, really bad. I find that if I even take 1 bite of something not on the list, I end up eating like crazy. Just want to know what are others pre and post opt diet like? Thanks, lovcali

Hard Time Deciding
OutsideMatchInside replied to gubygubb's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I went with the sleeve because I am young and active and I wanted to lead a normal life. As a single person I felt RNY was too risky for me. I have a friend that had RNY and never made it to goal, and regained. The long term differences in the weight loss between the sleeve and the bypass are almost the same. In the end it more about how you manage your tool. Also I felt I was too young to deal with malaborption from RNY. If the sleeve didn't exist, I don't think I would have ever had surgery. I knew RNY wasn't for me, and the lap band just doesn't even make sense to me. The sleeve is the only thing that made me think WLS might be for me. Also lastly I knew I could revise with the sleeve to a DS later in life if I had serious regain. Once you have RNY and fail at it, there really isn't any more surgical help. It is a hard decision so you should do your own research and decide on what fits your life. -
I just had my band revised to rny. The lapbad is a piece of equipment and will eventually age and fail. My bet is that everyone with one will eventually need a revision. Mine lasted 11 years, but I've heard many fail at 5. My surgeon went as far as saying anyone still putting them in now should be sued for malpractice, they just don't work long term...10+ years and many people have issues with them and they have the data to support that.

This is when it really hits home. You are going through food withdrawals. I just had a revision from band to sleeve and I’m 14 days post and feeling the same thing, just not as intense as the first time around. Just don’t push it, please. Let the internal incision heal. I also just had my 2 week dr visit today and 6 more days until mushy to semi solids. You can do this. You’ll make it through and look back and be glad you did. Protein helps keep you full. I hate shakes and put unflavored GenePro in my broth. It’s a little scoop that has 30 grams and it really keeps you from feeling hungry. I hope this helps!

Thanks UnderTheCaliSun for your answer. So what do you usually have for your breakfasts? No, I never drink with any of my meals. I wait at least 1/2 hour after a drink before I eat. I then wait at least 1/2 hour after eating before I have a coffee or any other drink at all. I am seeing both my Dietician and my Bariatric GP this coming Tuesday. So I'm looking forward to having a talk with both of them to see if maybe I need to have my new tummy revised.

Sweetsue - I don't understand why the doc wouldn't question the diminishing "fill" from the band? I would suggest flourscopy/barium swallow to make sure you didn't have a slip (of the band). I had really bad heartburn, and after throwing up a lot, my stomach prolapsed up through the band and had to have the band removed surgically. (I had a new one put in). At the point where I couldn't swallow my own spit, :tongue2: I had a total unfill, and I thought it fixed the problem. But after the doc saw my flouroscopy xray, he said my band had to be removed. He said even though the swelling would go down, it would keep happening because the band slipped. I am now almost 2 months from my revision, and feel great. I am able to sleep lying down again without choking. I do not have to take otc heartburn pills anymore, etc. However, I'm still not at my sweet spot, and have gained a few pounds. BUT, I do not want to rush my fills, for fear of overfilling and redoing the damage again. It must be hard to have to pay out of pocket, but I wouldn't get another fill until you can eat normally without throwing up. Good luck in whatever you decide.:smile2: Brenda

Advice please band to sleeve
VSGmary replied to socialbutterfli's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was revised band to sleeve in Oct 2014. Complications I've encountered personally: i have developed GERD, for the first 6 months i was lactose intolerant and could not eat any form of meat for the first 5 months. My gall bladder had to be removed 3 months after i was sleeved (this is quite normal due to losing a lot if weight in a short amount of time). My GERD is being controlled by taking one 20mg tablet of omeprazole a day. Thats about it! For me the revision has been 100% been worth it. -
Trish, thanks so much for the offer to help me with the resume, that's so thoughtful (and helpful). I have been "rough drafting" it this weekend, then emailing it to my brother and his wife. He called me today, and said that for a first attempt, it actually wasn't too bad (yea!). As soon as I finish posting here, it's back to the resume. Funny that something soooooo short can take soooooong long to get right! LOL! Might just take you up on that offer, though  YEAH! Trish is on Mushies!!! (nice WL too...that always brings out the Happy dance :crying:) Sherry, you crack me up girl! I was LOL about the 300+ miles on the back of a bike makin' your butt "spread out"....so funny! I too am having a hard time with the weight loss lately...and just like you, have to admit that "it's me" messin' up. I've been trying to get a minimum of 30 mins. exercise in a day, even tho' it's laughable (wii fit), Hey, better than nothin'! go get that thing back gal, and work it 'til the little timekeeper "piggy-bank" celebrates 30 minutes! LOL  Betty, I felt so bad for you when you said you'd lost your long post....boy oh boy, have I been there before!!!!! UGH! Actually, I don't think I'll mention, to the boss, that things at work have caused me to start looking elsewhere. I think I'll just continue being a dutiful employee ( while compiling my resume ) Then give notice, if/when I have something else lined up. Oh, has your company arrived yet? They staying for a while? Donna, how are you doin' gal? got your shopping done? Rx's filled? Wrappin' it up about now, huh? things are gonna be great! Even tho' I've not been as great with the weight loss as some folks we know ( hottie with the collar bones ), this band thing has made me feel so much better, with the weight I've lost so far, and with the hope of loosing more..... and, oh yeah, it's GREAT having support "only a click away! Pat, great talkin' to ya!....'til that bird sh*t on my leg!!!! TOO CRAZY! Just sittin there relaxin, then plop YUCK!!! UGH!!! Anyway, teach me the recipe for those butt-kickin' martinis BTW, I was relieved to hear that you understood just how unorthodox things are handled there. Thankx. Well folks, I've had no less than 4 phone calls, while I've been trying to post here AND I still have to revise the resume! so I'm gonna hafta stop here, it's getting late. Kat, Jessica & Eileen, thinkin' of ya.... Everybody, have a good night. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

How long after the initial consultation did you get approved for surgery?
CarmenG replied to taylorxoxo88's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My initial consultation was in March (don't remember the day), I got the revision surgery June 19th. BCBS will only pay for "one weight loss surgery per lifetime." I was told by some doctor's offices that since it was a revision, my insurance wouldn't cover. I called my insurance and spoke to a fantastic lady who really helped me out. I made the point that in 2009, when I got sleeved, BCBS for my school district wasn't covering WLS yet. It was private pay for me, and I had it done in Mexico (no hoops to jump through). So, technically, BCBS had never covered a WLS surgery me. She agreed. It was approved. Edit: I did have to follow a diet plan to lose weight before the surgery, I had to have an endoscopy, a barium swallow (to check for acid reflux), blood work, see a cardiologist, have a psyche eval (on the phone), and talk to a nut (on the phone). It was a little easier than virgin surgeries because it wasn't my first rodeo.
