  1. That's what I have been doing. I'm taking Bariatric Multivitamins but not the chewable. I have added B-Complex since my doctor said it would help my multivitamin. Did he tell you to the the extra Calcium Citrate because your vitamins are not chewable?
  2. Thanks for clarifying! I was so confused. You are definitely correct about the band, though. It's so funny because @Alex Brecher had the band and he was so successful that he started this website and his career in bariatrics! So while statistically the band is pretty poor, there are definitely success stories out there (just like with losing weight without surgery). But, as the statistics show, on average you'll definitely maintain weight loss better with the sleeve or bypass than with the band.

Do you keep a daily journal?

I made notes about how I was feeling at certain points in the journey (physically, mentally, emotionally). I also listed various weight milestones in the context of my life (e.g., I was able to fit into a size XX pair of pants for the first time since whatever year, etc.). I also wrote about times that I was away on trips and was able to make my diet work for me and not against me. Stuff like that... I go back and read my entire food journal every few months. It always gives me renewed inspiration when I do so!!

    Keto diet

No, I do not have epilepsy, and I am not exactly sure why you posted such a nasty message. That's on you. If you don't want to eat low carb, then don't. But it is effective, and it is supported by not only by bariatric surgeon and his staff, but also by my PCP. I've lost 225 pounds and am maintaining beautifully. I'll just leave it at that.
  5. Has anyone had surgery with Peachtree Bariatrics in Atlanta? Please tell me the surgery went more smoothly than the pre-surgery stuff. The office staff has lost my psych evaluation 4 times, a patient advocate left and didn’t record a bunch of my stuff so I had to re-do, the tech told me there was no record of the stress testing that I did in their office, and currently I’m having to have my PCM re-fax all my labs and clearances because they can’t find those either (and then when I called to follow up, the office had closed 2+ hours early) I’m extremely frustrated, but this is who TriCare referred me to, so I’m not sure if starting over with a new office is an option. Hoping to hear from people that the surgery portion is not more of the same. I’m a little terrified that if the staff is this bad, what is the doctor like?
  6. I am 7 weeks post op vsg and I had the same problem with the chewables. My Dr. switched me to regular Bariatric non chewable ones but I have to take an additional calcium citrate with it. It is definitely better than the chewables!
  7. well 12 lbs is totally crazy loss...I thought 16 in a month was crazy. my ticker below gives my monthly play by play and it looks pretty common from what ive seen (12-18 a month in 1-2) then a drop to around 8-12/month until about month 6 and then another drop from there. Keep in mind starting weight (BMI) has a huge impact of rate of loss, certainly early on. Age and health conditions all impact rates of loss. The reality is, that I have yet to see even one post from someone who considers themselves a "slow loser" who actually is a slow loser. most bariatric patients have wildly unrealistic expectations of post op weight loss. I can only imagine it has to come from shows like "my 600lb life. Think of it in percentage of total weight...if you weigh 600lbs and you lose 5% a month for the first two months...it looks like 30lbs. if you weigh 250lbs 5% looks like 12.5lbs.

    Disappearing lapbanders

There are dozens of studies globally that all say the same thing. complications that require revisions (read surgeries) of some sort range in the 30-50% range by 10 years out. it is why the rate of banding dropped to less than 5% now and it is banned in some countries. Until the "newer" bands have been around for 10 years, no one will be able to predict whether the pharma marketing claims are true (hopefully they are, but nobody can say that yet). all procedures have advancements over the years. the data is what it is aged, in every single case for all surgeries (by about 10 years to be viably trusted). Frankly at revision rates of 30-50%, the long term band complications are significantly higher than other bariatric surgeries. Having said that, this means 50-70% are still revision free at 10 years, so issues are not a foregone conclusion. So if you are symptom free and successful, enjoy it and don't worry about it. I had a great 3 years with the band before mine went bad. My advice though is this. if you start to have issues, don't do what I did and many others and ignore the symptoms, make excuses for it and stick your head in the sand. get them addressed and fast. If they aren't resolving, remove it before it is too late to have other options. The band is sold as low complication and virtually consequence free, that is simply not true. Yes it is reversible, but it does permanent damage in many cases. it stretches the esophagus over time and can cause reflux (which can lead to cancer), cause adhesions to other organs (my hospital roommate spent 4 hours longer than me in surgery with 2 surgeons removing the adhesions from the band to his liver and intestines. many have slips or erosion. Just make sure you are being your own best advocate for your health, and act to resolve issues, they will not go away on their own.

    It’s possible

Great having this resource picture, I'm answering today so it will pop out of Bariatric Purgatory so others can see it too. Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. I have yet to meet with a bariatric surgeon. How my insurance works is that, I went to my GP he then agreed to start with the insurance for approval and the insurance gave me a list if requirements. I already got my psych and my recommendation from the dietitian. Next week I will see an internist. After I am approved by my insurance then they will sent me to Columbia south America to consult with the bariatric surgeon. I live on a small caribbean island and we do not have a bariatric surgeon here. All my research thus far has been on my own. And using YouTube and this app has been such a help for me. I've only met 1 other person that has had thus surgery. So I am really happy this app has been my support. Thanks guys. Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app

    Really stressed :(

5 years, that seems excessive, I only had to have 1 and my PCP was acceptable. Was glad cause he was gung Ho about it in the first place and he's still super supportive. A little curious background: there are 3 main Bariatric programs in Columbus(where I'm going) my PCP graduated from Ohio State, did his residency at Riverside Methodist but I'm going where he recommended-Mount Carmel. Amber my Nurse Facilitator and I have a little joke " Go to OSU and they'll kick you around like a football; come to Mount Carmel and we'll pray with You", they have been great. Like you I once had United, had most of my 6 months prerequirements done and my job was terminated so had to start over again with different coverage. I have BMI of 45, sleep apnea, GERD have had arthritis since 25 so it's pretty bad, 2 knee replacements and I'm 72(yeah that's right) and will be having an RnY. Just finished all my pre requisite so waiting on a call-back from the surgeon's office for pretesting like blood work etc and a surgery date. If they are booking like usual it could be early to Mid March, yeah I'd like it sooner but they might not have a sooner slot. All prayers and good thoughts cheerfully accepted! Keep me updated on your journey, okay? Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

    January bypass buddies??

Attitude has a lot to do with it! Recovery is temporary....and this change will be such a positive step to a healthy life! I have done great so far with very little pain. I went in with that mindset and I think that helps! Release the fear....everyone I have spoken to has had a bariatric procedure says it was the best decision of their life with no regrets! Like anything in life you just have to do the work! Follow post op instructions and know this is the beginning of something wonderful [emoji173]️[emoji173]️[emoji173]️
  13. Eeek! I am sorry that you've had to undergo this. If it were me, I would absolutely not go open bariatric surgery. If the procedure could not be done laprascopically, it is a no go. Consider going the sleeve route then. I don't go for surgery until next month but if I have this kind of situation, a sleeve is still better than the alternative of continuing to be obese and have health problems.

  15. I have been unable to have chewable vitamins due to getting sick from them! Chalky! I don't know how far out you are, but in my case, the doctor said it was ok to take regular vitamins as long as I cut them in half and suplemment them with B-Complex. I found one Calcium chewable that's taffy and tastes good. It's from Bariatric Fusion berry flavor chewables. So I have mainly been taking pills instead of chewables. I'm 4 months post op.
  16. Long story short. I started this process last January. My insurance at that time was United Health Care. I met with my surgeon and got all required testing and psych evaluation done. I had my surgery scheduled for July of last year pending insurance approval and I only had my last supervised diet class to attend. Well around May I was faced with financial crisis that ended in having to file for bankruptcy. At that time I was unable to go through with surgery because of my finances and other issues. Now fast forward to this January I decided to go through with the surgery. I called my insurance company. I now have new insurance because my husband's employer changed insurance companies. After talking with over 5 insurance reps they all confirmed that surgery is covered under my plan and the only requirement is that it be medically necessary. It seemed odd to me that that would be their only requirement. So I called my surgeons office and scheduled to meet with him on the 25th. Yesterday I called my insurance again to recheck my coverage. Again I was told only requirement was it had to be medically necessary. Then the lady calls me back and tells me you have to do six month supervised diet, psych evaluation, and minimum of 5 years of weight history from your doctor. So I'm really stressed because now I don't know if the supervised diet visits and all the other tests will carryover to my new insurance. Not sure if they'll except the supervised diet visits I already completed because they aren't consecutive. I have 5 that are consecutive. I also am unsure about the 5 year history because I haven't gone to a primary care physician yearly for checkups. So I'm wondering if this information can come from any doctor or just a pcp?? I was also told I need to call bariatric resources and have a case manager because they make sure you meet requirements before anything is submitted to insurance. I'm just really stressed now and really kicking myself in the butt for not going through with the surgery the first time around. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks [emoji4]
  17. Welcome Audrey- yes we're all here to give you love and support. We are on a journey towards better health, as you probably see from my previous post I'm old enough to be your grandmother or worse but honey I'm in it to win it just like all the rest. There are a lot of "veterans" that are still active on Bariatric Pal, they've been there and are a great source of practical experience and information. So if you have any questions, just ask, okay? 18. I am sick and tired of being sick and tired, have fought the weight wars and the weight always won. Now is my chance and I'm gonna take it. Join me on this journey friends. So nervous!

You will be fine, all the post Rnyers have told me it wasn't as bad as the dreading they did before. I'm still pre surg myself but that's what I'll be having probably within the next 6 weeks. Just finished my pre requirement yesterday, let my Bariatric Facilitator know, isn't that a fancy term? and she told me to expect a call-back from the surgeon's office to let me know scheduling for pre op blood work etc. I live nearly 50 miles away from the hospital so will have to do everything in 1 day. My local hospital just recently started doing limited Bariatric but they don't do anyone with a BMI over 40 or RnY so I have to go to Columbus, our state capital. Don't be scared, it's the Gold Standard of Bariatric surgery, performed often and a lot safer than many other major surgeries. Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app
  20. And um...we also eat carbs:) No refined sugar, but beans, potatoes, whole wheat breads, protein pasta, oatmeal....low glycemic carbs that don't cause sugar spikes and boomerang hunger...I eat them daily. Fruit, too:) Bariatrics is an emerging field. There are some new ideas out there, and lots of old ones. Time will tell which ones work the best long term. And like everything else...I'm sure some plans work better for some people than others.

    Surgery likely canceled

Hi All. So my surgery is scheduled for Tuesday next week. Last night I forgot to plug in my phone. When it was finally charged at 515 today I had a voicemail from the bariatric team coordinator. She said she needed to talk to me regarding my bloodwork. I have mild stage 2 kidney disease. I also have Fatty liver disease. I saw my labs last week on my portal. I knew they weren't great but I am on the preop ketosis diet and they did them without me fasting and I didn't get a chance to hydrate. These are the worst parts: urea nitrogen/creatinine ratio, serum 31.8 urea nitrogen, blood 35 potassium, serum 5.3 erythrocyte (RBC) count 3.95 egfr 55 aspartate aminotransferase (SGOT), serum 41 Alkaline Phosphatase, Serum/Plasma 57 alanine aminotransferase (SGPT), serum 39 So I call back, they are of course gone for the day. I am afraid this surgeon won't do the surgery. What other reason could they have to call me 8 days after these labs were done. I can't stop blubbering. Then I have to have stress test and a echo cardiogram tomorrow at 730. I also receive a call from the imaging people saying they don't have insurance approval. Of course they are closed too. I called the insurance company and they have no record at all for approval of a echo or stress test. The cards are stacked against me and I am fearful. The RNY was my only hope for a healthier life. I am miserable.

Normal not be under 200 pounds 8 months post op?

Not sure this is the right place to ask for money for college. Maybe try Facebook or Instagram. This is a bariatric support website....

  25. I went to my new primary care physician last week and she getting me a referral for bariatric surgery and is going to get me tested for sleep apnea. Tomorrow I have a physical exam. I don't know how long it will take to see a surgeon, and am unsure about my insurance requirements. I keep on getting different answers, sometimes they say a BMI over 40 is all I need, sometimes they say a BMI over 35 plus a comorbidity. I also get different answers on whether the 6 month supervised diet is required. I hope once I get in to see the surgeon that I can talk with their insurance people and they can contact my insurance and get something in writing about the requirements.
