  1. I am just short of 9 months since surgery. Here is my weight lost history Monthly Loss Tme frame Cumulative Loss 13 2 wk preop 13 18.5 Month 1 31.5 12 Month 2 43.5 11.5 Month 3 55 12 Month 4 67 10 Month 5 77 7 Month 6 84 9 Month 7 93 6 Month 8 99 5 Month 9 104 Minimum - it might be one or two more. I started out for the first 3 weeks just trying to get in my fluids and as much Protein as possible - I was probably managing maybe 40 grams of protein. After that, until about 6 months, I was as 60 grams of protein, and 60 minimum ounces of Water, and about 500 calories. I didn't eat bread, Pasta, rice or potatoes and didn't drink alcohol. I also stayed away from sugar. At 6 months I upped the protein to about 80 grams, and the calorie count to around 800. Same thing with the carbs and sugar. I have pretty much held there, except it doesn't bother me if I exceed the protein count occaisionaly, and the calories flex up to 1000 now. For the past three days, I have exceeded that and have been eating more of my restricted carbs and sugar. Today I am getting back to normal and will be strict again starting tomorrow and stay strict until I give myself a break for Christmas. I didn't do much exercise to start, just lite walking. Then I bought an elliptical and started Zumba, and was doing both. But, I sprained my ankle badly cleaning a closet, which put most exercise on hold for me. I really haven't started back, but will resume my exercise next week. I plan on hitting it hard to help me get the last 15 pounds off, and to firm up my saggy jiggly self. And, my goal is to make exercise a part of my normal routine, to help me maintain my goal weight. This is what works for me. I wish you good luck on your journey. Sharon
  2. Hi fellow sleeve pals and sleevers to b, So I went out again with friends that don't know I had the surgery. They chose to go to javiers Mexican resturaunt. I was doing ok with the dinner I chose until I had to throw up but this was a stabbing pain on the back on the fight side with extreme tightness. I totally give up on eating out for now. I must continue to practice understanding my limits and my sleeve at home and also it is not easy when friends keep asking why I hardly ate and if I'm feeling ok and why I hardly drank my virgin mango margarita. I took two sips. I took three bites of my beans n ground chicken. I went to bathroom dying to vomit n it was full with a bathroom attendant so I got nervous n walked a round around the resturaunt hoping the urge n pain would go away. I'm wondering if the excitement n overwhelmingness of going out adds to the sleeve tension. I dunno but at the comedy club I did ok sipping on water and watching my friends eat our birthday dessert. At least I got fun gifts. N luckily my friends do Not drink alcohol. :0) right now my sleeve hurts a Lot all over. I did have the slimes n had to throw up (3) times when I got home tonight. The sleeve is making lots of noises. Anyhow, happy Sunday. Also I need to learn n practice this no sipping after or before eating rule. It's so important to do so!!
  3. At first, like B-52 has said, I didnt find the band a "tool" either. For probably the first year, I found it surgically induced weight loss that I helped along by doing the right things, but I would have lost weight, anyway. I couldnt have helped it. I had very little real hunger, I had an appetite, but a very small one, I wasnt interested in eating between meals. Over time, despite getting more fills, I'm not sure whether that really waned, or whether my perception of it changed, I became less aware that the band was doing something and found it more work to continue losing. But that has a lot to do with the fact that I was 80lb lighter and already well under a BMI of 30, so that to lose more, I really had to 'diet'. Early on, it was very simply eat less, move more and the weight will pour off. I've now been banded six years. Head hunger, inappropriate appetite returned for me, despite fill levels. I'm the same old person, put cake before me, I'll want to eat it. Ive been forced over the years to really work on some habits like that - and the band doesnt help it - but at the same time, the band gives you a safety net. You dont have to be perfect, like if I do eat that cake, I cant eat dinner due to the band. I'm too full. That's not necessarily healthy, but it controls calories which at the end of the day, is what losing weight is all about. You finish the weight loss phase (and I never unfilled, my weight loss just got slower and slower till it stopped, and I maintained on that fill level), you dont go back to regular eating like you would have done. You keep your band, so you keep the banded lifestyle and amazingly, the weight doesnt go back on. Christmas, birthdays etc are big days, you eat more, you drink a bit of alcohol but its not enough to cause a 5lb weight gain, its incredible. I spoke about perception and mine is that now, I'd call myself a normal person with normal appetites who just eats a bit less than normal. But in reality, the band is still doing more for me than that. I notice that people all eat Snacks between meals, their meals are what I consider huge, they dont worry about adding dessert when they eat out, they drink calories, I do none of that becuase the band doesnt let me and has taught me not to see it as normal. Its a tool - it really is - after the honeymoon of a year or so, it does take a lot more work and a lot of your old self creeps back in, but its a totally workable tool that is easy to use if you have the right mindset - and that mindset develops over time.

    Alcohol!?

I avoided alcohol for about 6 weeks post surgery, but have drank like I did pre-op ever since. I'm a bit of a drinker (and don't apologize for it), and despite drinking I'm basically at goal. I will say that it took a while to get back to my old tolerance, but once I got past six months or so it wasn't an issue. I'm glad for those who don't drink, but moralizing teetotalers need not try to sway me.

    Alcohol and common sense

Alcohol AND common sense...Hmmmmmmmmmmmm...Interesting....It will never catch on!!
  9. Different things make different people nauseous and some are more sensitive than others. Since it hasn't been mentioned that I have seen, I wanted to say Sugar Alcohols make me nauseous. I feel like I am coming down with the flu about 10 minutes after I ingest them. I found out this is a hypoglycemic reaction. My body thinks they are sugar and floods my system with insulin which zaps up all the sugar, but does nothing to the alcohol sugars, and causes my blood sugar to drop rapidly. It takes about 30-60 minutes for me to recover. I have no problems with lactose or sugar or artificial sweeteners.. go figure. I hope you find out what it is that is causing your stomach upset. Let us know.

    Alchoholic Beverages

I was told I could drink moderately after 3 months (but they prefer I wait until goal). I actually have had a few drinks here & there starting at about 10 weeks out . . . I had a pretty high tolerance pre-op and that doesn't seem to have changed. I was able to drink beer out of a glass (sipping slowly) with no bubble issues, wine is OK but pretty sweet, but I seem to do best with a mixed drink like vodka/soda or vodka/pineapple/cranberry. I went out with friends last weekend and overdid it a little, and my hangover lasted much longer than usual . . . so I think surgery has changed the way my body metabolizes alcohol.

    Alchoholic Beverages

I've been on the boards since last December, and I've seen this discussed a few times. One of our most famous losers waited to drink till she was at goal. Some people drink fairly early out without issue. Some people report they get heartburn from alcohol. Some drink beer, some don't drink anything fizzy. I chose to follow my programs guidelines and not drink for the first six months, which just passed yesterday. I'm now cleared for 1-2 drinks per week, but I haven't had one yet. I plan to start with port because it's festive, lighter in alcohol content, and can be sipped really slowly. And it tastes great when the weather is cold. I'm planning on trying on a couple ounces at home to see how that goes. Many people report liquor hitting them like a freight train after surgery, at least the first few times they tried it, and I don't want any embarrassing public incidents. Cheers! Lynda

    Christmas Challenge!!!

Hi all, I celebrated my 6 months surgiversary last Thursday. I made the goal I wanted: 70 lbs. lost post-surgery in 6 months. The six-month checkup went well. I've been trying hard to stick to Kaiser's guidelines and they are working for me. I'm now cleared for 1-2 alcoholic drinks per week. Yahoo! I'm going to start out with a small glass of port, probably this weekend. I'm planning on enjoying Thanksgiving this coming week, but I hope not so much that I dont' lose. I've lost every week since surgery and I don't want to break that streak yet! Lynda My Christmas Goal also includes reaching the following goals: 154 lbs.: I'm a NORMAL BMI!!!! and I have 19 lbs. to goal 154: I've lost 100 lbs total - 32 pre-op and 68 post-op. I'm in the Century Club! 152: I've lost 70 lbs. post-op 149: My number starts with 14. I haven't weighed this since the mid-90s. 146: I've lost 10% of my total body weight for the fourth time since the operation. I have less than 10% of my body weight to go to goal, so it will be my last 10% loss. 145: 10 lbs. to go to my final goal! 144: My Christmas goal and I've lost 110 lbs. (32 pre-op and 78 post op). 9 lbs. to my final goal!!! Lissa, Thank you for responding because there isn't very much info on the alcohol issue Snoozy

    Alchoholic Beverages

I have a self-imposed rule of waiting at least six months for any alcohol. My surgeon's guide does not address alcohol but says wait at least 2 months for orange and tomato juices because they can cause stomach irritation. I think alcohol in any form would do the same, and possibly be even more irritating because it's usually more acidic and thinner than those juices. So, I picked six months as a good timeline before trying any alcohol. FYI, I have had both orange and tomato juice in the last couple of weeks and had no problems. Maybe try a sip or two of the alcohol when you're ready and be prepped to switch to something less acidic if needed.
  18. When I first started exploring revision from my band I was looking into the gastric bypass. Well, someone i knew who had lost alot of weight after her bypass died in her sleep about 5 years post surgery - she was only 40. It really frightened me! What I came to find out though was that she had very serious emotional problems and had become a serious alcoholic - lost her job, family and many friends. She was also a diabetic - it was all just too much for her body. I felt very sad for her but I had to realize that she had these issues before her weight loss and sadly she just didnt get the help she needed. I think we all need to accept that there are risks, but my goodness, compared to the very real risks of remaining obese, i think it is worth the gamble.
  19. Lissa

OK, so what do you emotional eaters do now?!?!

I haven't made it a secret that I'm seeing a therapist. I have other issues (marriage related) that I'm dealing with, but she's also helping me address my addictive personality. I HAVE a food addiction that I cannot indulge since being sleeved. She's helping me motivate myself to exercise and do other things. One of my favorite frustration busters is to take my tiny little 3 pound weights and do some arm work. The arm exercises let me feel like I'm hitting who/whatever is frustrating me. Walking also helps, even on the treadmill, because it lets me feel like I'm walking away from the problem. I was told by my pre-op psyche doctor that I WILL be an alcoholic. I'm working very hard to make sure that doesn't happen. I wasn't a person who drank before and I have no intention of starting now. The best advice I can give to emotional eaters is to find something else to do with your frustration/triggers for eating. Love on your kids, exercise, SHOP if that's what does it for you. Just find something to use so that you don't sabotage your weight loss.
  20. Not drinking with meals and avoiding alcohol have been my biggest challenges. But, to echo everyone else, SO WORTH IT!
  21. B-52

    Negativity!

Been away from my computer for few days. Opened my e-mail and down came a long list of new posts from this website, and ALL were NEGATIVE! WHAT A DRAG! Then I find a post from a person who is considering the surgery but having 2nd thoughts because of all the info he/she is reading here. THAT got to me! So I need to vent. First, I have to give disclosure that what I say is only from my own personal experiences, and of course, everyone should follow what their Dr. says, not a stranger. I LOVE my band. It is the best thing I have ever done, and without a doubt has changed my life and probably saved it too. It is doing everything that I had hoped and imagined it would do! And I can honestly say I do not have one single complaint or problem! People say it is a "Tool" that you use and with a little hard work and determination you can make it work. Well, sorry, I have been on more diets that I can remember and this is the EASIEST weight loss experience I have ever imagined. I have undergone major bariatric surgery and had a foreign object put inside me to change my eating habits...and that is exactly what it is doing. The main discipline for me is making wise food choices. And for that there is a learning curve! First, it has controlled and curbed my hunger. There are times when I know it's time to eat and I just don't feel like it. Second, when I do eat, the amount of food I can eat is very, very small! I could not overeat if I wanted to! Recently people here have stated they dread the thought of Thanksgiving and not overeating and ruining their progress. My only anxiety is that I WON"T be able to eat my favorite foods! I've thought this through and think I am going to at least have a "Taste" of everything on the table. But I will have to save the stuffing for last because that's not going to work at all. I still go out to my favorite restaurants. I drink coffee all hours of the day. I enjoy an alcohol drink now and then. I don't measure/weigh my food. There is just so much that will fit in my pouch. If I did weigh/measure what I ate I am sure I would find it to be proportional to what I should be allowed. In other words I can't overeat no matter how much I may want to! My Diabetes is completely reversed! At one point I was taking 60 units of Lantus at bedtime, plus oral meds during the day with meals. NO MORE! GONE! I now go to the gym and workout like a madman. Not because I have to, but because the things I can now do are amazing (to me) and I can't wait to get back and do it again! I wear clothes that are "Normal" sized. Bought 2 winter coats that are MEDIUMS! I have not had a fill since May. I tell my Dr. everything I am doing. He says I am in a good place, exactly where I should be, in the Green Zone. Go and enjoy your life and I will see you in 3 months. I have to say it continues to get better every week as more old habits die away and new habits are learned and become second nature. I get up and go to work and come home everyday. There are days I do not even think about being banded. (like having bridgework) I need to say it took me 4 months from surgery to get to this place, where things started to fall in place. THAT was when my weight loss journey began. NOT when I had the surgery. And like I said, it keeps on getting better. There. I'll get off my soapbox now.

    7 month Post Op!!

I know I’m almost a week late! But I’m officially 7 months post op! Yay! I went on a cruise last week (November 6-13th) to San Juan, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, and the Grand Turk. I managed to NOT gain any weight while I indulged in EVERY thing that looked delicious; though I wish I had worked out more than just two days while on this trip, I probably would’ve lost more weight… At my last check up with Dr DiCicco, I weighed 253lb, I think… well I’m down to 241lb, so I lost 12. He was upset last time that I had lost so little, but he was pleased with my progress; I’m basically 50lbs down and that’s halfway in his mind, so I’m on track! He was especially happy I managed to still lose weight while on a cruise. Like I said before I was doing a no carb/low carb diet… and I completely forgot what carbs were on this cruise. Of course I had plenty of empty calories as well with the alcoholic drinks and what not, but they served bread/dinner rolls EVERY day… and I indulged cause I LOVE my bread and butter, but towards the 4th day I had to start telling them no, because I was afraid it was going to RUIN me, LoL! I didn’t get a fill, as I still feel I have restriction, though I also feel I’m able to eat a little more than I could when I first started out with the 6.3cc; I’m thinking I’ll probably get a fill come next month; it should be a little looser by then. But I’m currently in a good spot at the moment. I had no PBs or stuck episodes while on my trip, which was a blessing! So we’ll see how things are looking come December. I don’t really have any NSVs this time around. I wasn’t down to the weight that I wanted to be come November (220lbs), but October’s NSVs made up for that. This month though I’m kinda upset. I’ve been tossing clothes out left and right because they don’t fit anymore. A lot of tops that I had to buy large because of my then extra large boobies look like they’re swallowing me now. Just recently I had to attend a funeral and I had a black suit that I had worn before but couldn’t even button the jacket (so I wore a nice blouse underneath). I put it on for this funeral at the end of October, and what do you know I can button the jacket and it looks ridiculously big on me, so I had to toss it!... I ended up wearing a dress that had been given to me by a friend (18/20); thank goodness for that. So, while on my cruise they have a Captain’s Ball, where everyone dresses up really nice (ball gowns and tuxes) … so I wore this pink strapless dress that I hadn’t worn since either 2008 or 2009, I can’t remember…. But long story short… I was pretty sure that when I tried the dress on prior to going on my cruise that it fit… it was loose but it fit. Well, I get on the cruise … it’s Ball night and I get my make up done and I pull the dress on, no girdle or nothing and it’s super loose! My strapless bra is showing in the back and I cant fill out the boob area anymore… I was so disgusted and upset. Mind you I got plenty of compliments because it’s a pretty dress. But I had to rig it and I wasn’t happy about that. I had to pinch one side under my arms to tighten it a little. And I also had to pin the front of the dress to my bra so the dress wouldn’t fall down. Again everyone thought I was flipping out for no reason because the dress came with a shawl and no one could see how I had pinned everything together, but I just wanted something to FIT! Everything is either too loose or still just a little too tight. But I won’t complain… I’ll take this as a blessing! At least its not like I brought a dress and it needed to be taken OUT in order for me to wear it!... Trying to look on the bright side of things! Even my bathing suit bottoms were kind of loose. Mind you it’s a maternity two piece swim suit… the top still fits pretty good, especially in the boob area, but the bottoms are getting loose…. Does that mean I’m LOSING my caboose?! J Anyway, I guess I thought of two NSVs… for Halloween, I was a “Modern Vampire” … meaning I put on regular clothes and bought some fake teeth and popped them in m mouth… it was fun… well, anyway, I wanted to be a sexy vampire of course, so I had my boobs out and drizzled with blood, and I had on some ripped fishnet stockings and heels and …. Drum roll please….. my sister gave me an old jean skirt size 16! Mind you it’s NOT a stretch jean material, so I was amazed when I could button it and everything. Again I say, it’s still tight, and I wouldn’t wear it out just yet, but it was Halloween, so it’s okay to look a little out of place… J Next, NSV is kinda of stupid I guess but I’m really weird about wearing my arms out… I NEVER under ANY circumstances wear my arms out unless I have something to cover them with… a shawl, a small jacket, sweater, half jacket; anything BUT bare! So while on my cruise, the last day, we docked in the Grand Turks right on the beach… so I wore my bathing suit and a really pretty sun dress of course it was sleeveless otherwise there wouldn’t be a point to this story! LoL! Anyway of course I wasn’t gonna wear a sweater on the beach, so I proudly stepped off the boat with my arms BARE! I even took a picture and to my surprise I didn’t throw the picture aside like I normally would because to me my arms just look fat and disgusting and if I don’t like how my arms look then I don’t like the picture… but this one… I liked and I was surprised at myself… for being more confident! Which brings me to my last paragraph I promise! LoL! I feel like I’ve gained confidence with my weight loss. Granted I’m still disgusted by the loose skin and flab hanging, but in clothes I can really see a difference and I see my self being more outgoing. For instance on the boat there was a 70s Dance Class…it was just for fun, but normally I wouldn’t have participated because I would’ve been thinking about how I looked dancing around like a fool, but I just let loose and I had a good time. And NEVER would I wear a bathing suit in public without shorts or a shirt on, well, while on this cruise I wore my bathing suit without a shirt or shorts while on the ship and off… I even laid out and tanned a little bit… LoL! I wish my weight loss was where I wanted it to be, but it seems I’m right on target… Losing weight…Dropping sizes.. And building up my self confidence! I’m IN LOVE with my BAND!

    Be honest....

Sure, diet and exercise are easier. I've done it for years, and I've lost the same 20 pounds about a dozen times! Losing the weight is not the issue. It's keeping the weight off that is so hard. For me, banding was the end result of years of weight struggles, failing on every diet I ever tried, and realizing the clock was ticking. I'm not a young man, and how many more years of life would I have before chronic gross obesity finally killed me? Bandng was a fantastic option for me, and allowed me to finally get my weight under control. I will never look back, nor will I go back to being obese. Now, nearly a year after surgery, I've lost 125 pounds. I have had ZERO reflux, slippage, vomiting, hair loss, not enjoying alcohol, water not going down, or pills not going down. I've been stuck a few times, and each time it was because I ate wrong. If I pay attention and eat as a bandster should, I do not get stuck, and I can eat anything I want. I've had seven fills, the last three of which were very small, to tweak my "green zone" so my band works properly. Fills are no worse than getting a shot. It's a non-issue. Constipation is related to what I'm eating, and how much Fiber I'm taking in. My digestion has slowed down because of my diet, but it's another non-issue. I take fiber as part of my daily diet, and when it's time to visit the bathroom, there are no issues on that score. It's a small price to pay for being over a hundred pounds lighter. The decision you need to make is how many more years (and times) are you going to "get serious about diet?" If you could do it that way, you wouldn't be obese now, right? My honest advice is that if you have any doubts of being able to "get serious about diet," then have the surgery. If it doesn't work for you, then have it removed, and go back to chronic dieting. You have nothing to lose but your excess weight, right? Good luck! Dave
  25. Is lapband surgery really easier than following a healthy diet/exercise plan? I hear of reflux, being stuck, slippage, fills, Vomiting, head hunger, hair loss, not enjoying alcohol, Water not going down, pills not going down, constipation...etc. In all the research I have done, getting serious about diet seems much easier life than being banded for life. What do you post- banders think? Im a pre bander just trying to make the right decision....
