I'm brand new here and new to the world of wls in general. I'm reading a lot of posts from other people here and everyone seems so young. I'm 50. For most of my adult life I've been overweight. Not "omg I can't believe the size of her" overweight. But, hovering around the 190 mark since my late 20s. In my early 20s I weighed 110 and I loved it. Everything about it. The shopping, the dating, the attention. But eventually I settled down and it seemed like one minute later I was up to 165. I wasn't ever able to lose it again. And my 30s and 40s were a battle to just stay under 200 I'm only 5'3" I also had the biggest boobs that were ever naturally created. 10 years ago I had them reduced. It changed my entire outlook. I had the confidence of my 20's again. I also lost some weight and felt amazing. Then I started getting diagnosed with all these ailments. High bp.… thyroid problems, I've been on migraine meds forever.... My weight won't budge. Only low low carb or Jenny craig works. I can't afford Jenny indefinitely. And I stall at the 20 lb. mark. And I need some carbs...I end up eating to much meat because I'm hungry and I know I can eat it and not gain weight on the low, low carb. I can't do that anymore. I think I could do it the right way with this surgery. I am up to 223lbs. I hate what I've turned into. And the fact that most of the time I've really been trying to lose. I know this is only a tool. It will help me to not be hungry all the time (HOPEFULLY) I will have support. I will have to learn to eat again. I think this is the only thing that will get me down to a reasonable weight and help me stay there. I mostly want to be healthy and feel good about me again. I have a couple of major worries. One is when people say you won't ever enjoy eating again. Food will just be fuel. That makes me sad. I work in the music industry. So I go out a lot. I don't drink at all. I don't do any rec. drugs. getting a big Caesar salad w some croutons in it was my idea of partying. But everything in it's time. I just hope I don't chicken (Yes I like chicken in my Caesar Salad) out. Hope this wasn't too long!

FYI - I’m 5’8” and my weight range is 121-126. I do not plan on having my intestinal bypass lengthened. My revision surgeon is also not overly concerned with my weight. Aside from my reflux issues, my health is great in every other measure, and being lighter has most especially improved my arthritis pain. I had GI surgery in July 2018 to remove a LINX device that had migrated at the GE junction, repaired a hiatal hernia, and had a Nissen Fundiplication as there was a large fundus left. I am now awaiting results from an EGD endoscopy in Jan 2019 to see if I still have Barrett’s Esophagus and bile reflux, and determine if my gastric bypass loop (aka MGB) should be converted to an RNY.

Food Before and After Photos
NIKKIBEVERLY replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Poblano peppers (massage olive oil on them first and cut them in halves)-roast for 10 minutes on 400*. Use jerk seasoning and jerk marinade when you cook your chicken. Saute some red onions and add them to the chicken. Also dice some pineapple and add it as well. Once everything is complete stuff your pepper and add your favorite cheese or not. I also added some pickled red onions on top and then baked it for an additional 5 minutes. You can pickle the onions by just adding some lime juice to a bowl and let them sit with an occasional stir for about 10 minutes. Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Having the Sleeve with bad knees
jenifaoh replied to Jump123's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This is the same for me. I am bone on bone in my right knee. The left knee isn't too far behind. I am currently 268lbs at 5'5" The knee has slowed my down a lot. I have gotten orthovisc injections in my knee which help temporarily but I know losing weight is going to help a great deal. I go in for surgery 3/18/19. -
I had my surgery through a university hospital team that does an incredible amount of these surgeries a month. Pre-op patients are placed into groups of about 10-15 for monthly classes, during my 6 months pre medically supervised nutritional counseling, we individually saw the physician then we went to lecture like classes with homework to boot. Now that I am post op my post op appointment consists of seeing my physician for the medical visit, then sitting through a nutrition group with the nutritionist and about 6-10 post-op patients (who are within the same few days of surgery) discussing diet. It is very interactive and all questions are discussed. I happen to like this group setting, feels very supportive with people going through the same thing that I am. However no one ever looks at my food logs or gets into depth of my day to day eating habits. The only one who questions me about that is the physician himself and it's basically him asking me how much liquids and protein I'm taking in. i guess it differs from offices, the way they approach after care. Hope this helps, just adding to the discussion to help show, post op nutrition counseling can vary a lot. Your office however should be ashamed of the way they have cast you aside like that. Hope it gets better for you.

6 months out... “binging” and not feeling restriction
FluffyChix replied to saygrace's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats on getting to goal and on maintaining. And huge cudos for doing therapy to work through your old "tapes." I think it's important (at least for me), to set up a "new normal" with a "new set of road rules" for eating/living. The old me is dead/gone/buried/grieved. In her place is this resurrected phoenix who is stronger and more capable of new things--embraces all new things. Sometimes I have to remind myself of this transformation and remind myself that the old rules no longer apply to the new me. They aren't my "recipe for healthy living." That helps a lot. One of the tools I use for the new future is IF. Through IF, I find that there is room on non-IF days to be a bit more relaxed in my choices. But at the bottom is my rule of 90/10 or even 95/5 more likely than not. That means I eat healthy, nutritionally dense, calorically light, and to my cals/macros 95/5 of the time. And that also means my hard fast rule is: #1 Eat protein first (dense, lean protein = 2-3oz per meal)>>then al dente light low carb veggies>>small amounts of healthy fat at each meal>>then low glycemic fruits if still hungry (I'm never hungry at this point--fruit is always a small snack with protein and fat). I don't have to "REMEMBER" to do this, or think it through. It's now a "NEW" habit. I work on it every day cuz I want to let it settle into a forever habit. You can do this. The only hard things are the things we CHOOSE to make difficult and hard. Doing things repetitively helps cement behaviors and actions and relationships. -
New here and just had surgery
KCgirl061 replied to Megmartin87's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I didn’t seem like I was losing until about 6 weeks out. The first month my body was adjusting to the shock of surgery and nothing really happened. After that I was pretty consistently losing 10 pounds a month. -
Looking for a surgery buddy;

Oh that’s great I’m happy for you both, I wish my mother wouldn’t have been so afraid of surgery she would most likely still be alive today. She was always afraid yet was always there for me when disaster would happen. Most of my scar tissue is from a ovarian cyst that burst and took my right ovary I guess it did a lot of damage. I was only 17 at the time so I have lived with this scar tissue for quite some time and it bothers me every time they tell me it’s there. My son and I bought regular bikes about 3-4 yrs ago unfortunately that’s when my knee went bad and my bike got parked. If my stationary bike gets me in shape to where it’s safe for me to travel safely on the regular one come spring I’ll do it. I’ll have to add that to my GOAL CALENDAR. The groundhog is predicting an early spring I sure hope he’s right, it was almost 60* yesterday here raining all day but today it’s 10* and windy and freezing . Indiana weather is crazy!!!! Coat on coat off LOL I love to go to our fairgrounds to walk and take Jalapeño that’s where my daughter showed him in 4-H and both my son and daughter were members in the Horse and pony club as well. Eggs and the lil tomatoes are great I too always have them on hand. I also keep the mozzarella string cheese , cucumber slices and pickles on hand in case I don’t get those calories. And need something to dip I use my Olive Garden dressing only a couple drops tho. Or cottage cheese for dip.. I do track my sodium and can’t go over 2300 mg so pickles are limited I’ understand there’s gonna come a time we will need to drink a lot of broth which is ok with me as I have always loved chicken broth but I’ve only had it loaded with salt like Mrs grasses soup if you’ve ever had it. So this week I’m gonna Buy a broth that has no salt that I found and see how it tastes. I figure I better see what I’m getting into. LOL who knows I might like it. Keeping my fingers crossed!! -
That is (pun intended) insane! I can't believe they made you do all that - though obviously you had a good outcome. Mine was 10 minutes, and about 5 generic questions checked off a list.

Weird Stuff That Delayed Your Surgery Approval
kimberlymi replied to 🅺🅸🅼🅼🅸🅴🅺's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My delay was caused by many blood clots in both lungs. I ended up in the ER than admitted in the hospital exactly 3 weeks before my surgery. I spent 4 full days in the hospital, then when they released me it took about 24 hours to find out I was allergic to the blood thinner they gave me an hour before leaving the hospital. As an inpatient I was on a 24/7 IV heparin drip, no problem. I was switched 2 different times to different medication. They finally decided to put me on warfarin. September 2018 was when this all began. I had to see a hematologist, to make sure the blood clots were not from an underlying clotting disorder. All those test came back negative. What was finally decided was that the birth control my ob/gym put me on 42 days before this happened caused all the clots. I can not have any type of estrogen ever again. Everything is on track. My hematologists cleared me for surgery. I am on day 11 of my 14 day liquid pre-op diet. I have lost 110 lbs from March 2018 until my last weigh in on 2/7/19. I have lost a total of 154 lbs from May 2017 I am ready for this and can’t wait to get this transformation started on 2/12. -
Everyone is different, but I’m 10 days out, and have lost 18 lbs since my bypass (61 lbs total including the 43 lbs I lost pre op).

Options is a weight loss class. It explains everything about the surgery and eating before and after. Its every other week for 3 months or so. Its mandatory at Kaiser and you're expected to lose weight during this time. Typically 10% of your weight but no number is officially given to you. You have to "pass" the class to get the surgery but there's no test. If you show up to class and lose a little weight you'll be ok. There were no hidden costs at Kaiser for the surgery just whatever your co pay is. For me it was $250

yup, i didnt pass gas for four days. i barely got down the protein shakes, and i barely finished a bottle of water. its important to just keep sipping water. slip all day like every 10 minutes.

Ok--sounds like you need another veteran to respond. (Not sure why non-veterans are answering these posts...) Empathy? You got it! Try salads, veggies, water, water, water, and 10 minutes on the treadmill or climbing stairs, your choice. I also recommend eating at the table instead of in front of the tube and actively considering what goes into your mouth. It is NOT easy, but I believe in you!!!

Be careful! I have gained more than nine due to every excuse in the book. (medical issues, medicine, depression, etc.) and 9 pounds becomes 19 really fast! So I'm in month 2 of recovery and watching a pound a week going in the right direction feels pretty good.

LOL yeah, I've been doing a lot of ab exercises to help with my back issues. I almost couldn't keep the grin off my face when I was able to do 3 sets of 10 of incline bench crunches while holding a 25 lb plate. And the fact that I can actually start to feel them is just so damn cool LOL. -
Yay! I’m happy to hear this, he is my surgeon also!!! My DS is scheduled for 2/27...19 days away! Good luck on your journey!!

Weird Stuff That Delayed Your Surgery Approval
Mindyd2006 replied to 🅺🅸🅼🅼🅸🅴🅺's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to have 90 days with a nutritionist before my insurance would approve and then I had to have my family doctor recommend I had the surgery. In addition, the surgeon required a psych appointment along with 3 group counseling sessions - all standard for sleeve patients. Once everything was completed - and only then - would they submit to insurance. Insurance came back less than a week later with approval and then the surgery was scheduled. I had no surprises - everything was well mapped out and went as planned. Good luck with your insurance and surgery. Btw - I started the process on 8/30/18 and had my surgery on 1/10/19.
