    What is Wrong with ME?

I do not plan to tell anyone other than my husband and children. I do not even want their spouses to know. I do too have a hernia under my navel but my doctor does not want to remove it at the same time as the sleeve. He even says I may not need to have it removed. I do not want friends to keep asking why I will be losing weight so much faster than I have been able to lose for the past 10 years. They knew me when I was thin and hopefully they will just think I have finally been successful. I am so grateful to have all of my "new " friends on this page who know the struggles and heartaches we have been dealing with for many years. As far as why I am eating so much less or not at all, I plan to say that I finally found a food plan that is making me lose weight using Protein shakes etc. I will be sleeved in three weeks and I am nervous about what is to come. Yes, I would love to have my friends at my side as I know they would be BUT I am not ready to share this journey yet with them. Let all of you be new friends that will understand each other.

    Head hunger

Right there with you. I'm 10 days out and can't get pizza and steak off my mind.
  5. For those of you who drink a Protein shake in the am, how long does it hold you? Since my last fill I am tight and in the mornings I don't really feel like eating something solid, so I decided to give the Protein shakes another try. For the last two days I have drank the Slim Fast High Protein, it has 180 calories, 20 g of protein, 2g of carbs, 2 g of Fiber. The shake taste pretty good and it doesn't give me indigestion like other protein shakes have done so a plus plus. However, about 2 hours after I drink it I am hungry. I drink it around 7 am so by 9 I am starved, but I don't want to eat my snack (greek yogurt) until 10 so that will last until my lunch at 12:30-1. How do the shakes work for you?

    banding & dealing with work?

I told everyone the truth. There are 21 people in my office and probably 17 of them know, my actual boss is in another city and she probably told 10 people there. These people have been my biggest cheerleaders. I went through about 2 weeks when my band was too tight that I had about 4 meals in all that time. I got to looking kind of bad and everyone was concerned and told me I had let it go on too long. My bosses boss even told me if I didn't call the doctor he would! Why lie? You are doing something great for yourself which I think is commendable.

    Downtime After Sleeve.

I always say that I bounced out of the hospital, because I was there only one night and ready to go bright and early the next day. I had a death in my family that same week and drove cross-country the next day. I returned to work 1 week after my surgery, due to the Thanksgiving holiday. But I also had a very similar experience with my C-section (up and about as soon as the epidural wore off and I could feel my feet, that was 10 weeks ago) so it could just be me. I have a high tolerance for pain, pain meds, and a low tolerance for being still! You have to baby yourself, even if you do get up and around. Take things slowly until you are sure you have the muscle movement located, or you will end up pulling something. And don't lift anything! That's big muscle they cut through to get to the goods, so let the muscle heal. Also, keep that subdural anesthesia on for the recommended time. I removed mine at 5 days because it was bugging me, but I really could have used another 2. That stuff really does let you move more naturally right out of surgery. Good luck!!!

    Downtime After Sleeve.

I took 2.5 weeks off. My surgery was on Wed the 28th of November, and I am returning 12/17. I am fortunate to have separate vacation/sick time and extended sick time. We get one full week per year of extended sick time, so I have about 10 weeks saved. I was lucky.
  12. Even at 10 months out I couldn't get in enough protein without my protein smoothie because I can eat so little. Knowing I'm getting 30-40g protein plus a bonus 24-32oz of fluids allows me to eat a healthy balance of other foods including fruits and veggies and whole grains. Otherwise I would be eating protein for every meal and snack just to get enough and I'd be too full for anything else. And that is neither fun nor healthy.

    New In Idaho - Help!

I live in NY and my surgeon required me to lose 10 pounds. It seems kind of extreme to have to lose so much before the surgery. I think you should check around with other surgeons in your area and see what they have to say. It doesn't seem healthy to lose it that way.

@1Mila I just started my 6 month program on May 8th. My doctor is requiring I lose 10% of the total body weight I want to lose after getting the surgery. PCOS as Co-morbidity?

I was 194lbs when I was sleeved in Canada 08/10/2015. I am 5'2". I have PCOS and have had a life long battle with obesity. My highest weight was 266 at one time. My endocrinologist said I was an excellent candidate for the Sleeve. Good luck to you!
  16. OMG I looked up that recipe on Recipezaar.com and all of the soup recipes look good. I'm thinking of making them and freezing them until I can eat softs and pureeds. One more week of clear liquid and I'm starting to feel hunger pains so I just keep sticking to protein shakes and broth. Thanks for all of your encouragement, this journey so far has been pretty easy for me as well. I have lost almost 20 lbs since I started the preop diet and 10 of that has been since surgery. I can't believe it!!!!!

    My old life

The more weight you lose the less you miss your old life. What you are missing is some of the self-soothing things we did to make ourselves feel better, and the social interaction that comes with drinking and eating pub-food. But there is a trade off. Your health and life in exchange for beer and cheese. lol! Now I smoke weed rather than drink. Now I drink water when my friends are eating. But I'm still hilarious and don't need to be eating to have fun. It took me a while before I found my stride on that one. Life will resume for you, we find our new Normal. And it's surprisingly easy!! I totally understand missing your old life style!! That is where we found our comfort, where we soothed ourselves with food and fed our souls with fried stuff. lol! Or I did at least. It took me a good 3 months to find my New Normal. Some emotional ups and downs. But it's all so worth it!! Well, for me it is. Wearing a size 10 jeans, getting hit on by men of all ages, sitting in any seat I want regardless of ease or access, riding roller coasters, flying without fear, walking past windows but not ashamed of who I see, Joy...so much joy!! All those things are infinitely better and make me so much happier than me being able to eat a whole bloomin' onion in one sitting. There are trade offs. We lost our coping mechanism that was food, so our emotions and feelings are gonna be rough for a little while. Talking with a therapist is a good idea. Many of us are food addicts in one form or another, so there will be a psychological sense of loss, regret and fear for some of us. I was one. I cried for a week straight. (I'll give myself a little break here and admit that I had been deathly ill for 8 months prior to my surgery so I was drained emotionally and physically by the time I had my surgery. So my crying for a week had some additional ammo behind it besides not getting to binge on food. lol! Anyway, Just keep at it, you are doing great! And use us as your support! It's OK to have these feelings and to struggle with what we've done. But also keep focusing on your goals. The more you workout and can move more, the greater you will feel!

    My old life

That's the reality I want to be at. My late father, a well-meaning man (whom I miss very much), grew up in an orphanage when his parents gave him up because of their poverty during The Great Depression. From just under 5 years to 16 years, he was a ward of the state. Food was scarce but, under no circumstances, were the several hundred child orphans allowed to not like what was served and ALL plates always had to be cleared. That was a rule at home right through the '50s and '60s ... leaving food on one's plate or not liking/appreciating what was served was a no-no. It's been locked in my mind for over 55 years. I eat past my 'full' often and have done for as long as I remember. Playing three or four sports and having an active outdoor life until my late 30s meant I was just classified as overweight. But, with injuries and changing job responsibilities came obesity ... BECAUSE I COULD NOT COMMIT TO CHANGING HABITS. By 2019, I hope to be that person who can, like you, just eat the tastiest bits of what I order and take the rest home for later (or the pets). Thanks for your anecdote. It's thought-provoking.

    Restriction depends on your size?

Hi All, This talk about "am I big inside or small inside?" makes me remember something. After the birth of my first child I was considering using a diaphragm and the Dr. brought out the display showing all the sizes of diaphragms. I joking said that I probably need the huge one on the end since I'm "carrying all this baby fat". He told me that actually, after getting a diaphragm, if you lose 10 pounds or more, you need to come and get refitted for a new one, a BIGGER one. Because there's not as much body fat in there to hold it in place. So what I'm saying is that yes, it does make sense that the smaller people may have different fill needs that the larger, especially if the body fat internally is a big difference. ZiggyZiggler

    F. I'm a Runner!

    From the album: Beyon Sleeve

Ran my first ever 5K on August 11th 2012! I ran it in 31:39 (10:15 min mile). Out of 4670 runners I came in 2104th place! 77th for females 34-39 years old...not too bad!
  23. I have complained enough about it but I am on the same path you are! I wouldn't wish this on anyone BUT in finding the bright side: 1) I went ahead and bought a new pair of walking shorts and capris (we're talking Kmart here so no big $ invested) because I know that I won't be out of them in 10 days like some people. And I am a thrift store shopper by nature so this was a big splurge as an atta girl for doing what I needed to do. I also bought 3 new tshirts from CJ Banks. Again, on sale, but they are ELBOW LENGTH!!! and with my flappy arms just what I needed. 2) As you said, it won't come back. I know some folks have rebound weight gain but this first 20 are gone forever. and 3) Here's my biggie. I did this on the DL. I AM SO GRATEFUL for that decision. I knew I would be a slow looser. I was only eating about 2k calories a day when I was "pigging out" so I knew. When I did Weight Watches I had to undercut my allowed points by about 1/3 to lose the 1 pound a week once I'd gotten past that first 2 or 3 weeks. That's the main reason I kept this private. I will admit that in 2001-2002 I basically went on a long term fast and lost and lost fast so this is going a bit slower than even I expected. But still, it's going. And it will eventually be gone. And I am so glad I don't have to be explaining to people why I'm not losing weight. The one friend I told asked me last weekend when I was going to have my surgery. :(Yep. After 2 week pre-diet liquid fast and over 1 month post op, she wondered when I was going to finally get it done! And she's been in Florida for 3 months and not seen me everyday so it's pretty obvious it's not showing yet! Hang in there. We'll get there too. We're just walking instead of running.
  24. I am six days post-op. This week has been a struggle both with getting all of my liquids in and managing my pain/discomfort. Today was the first day I felt fairly normal and almost no pain--and I have even felt comfortable enough to try chicken soups and things like that with no issues of ANY kind. I am 19, 5'4", and my weight was 211lbs on the day of surgery (highest recorded weight was 225). I have not weighed myself yet since the operation as I only want to do so weekly. However, perhaps the second day after my surgery, I woke up in the morning and went to brush my teeth like always. When I looked at my face in the mirror, I could have sworn my jawline and collarbones were more pronounced. But I kind of thought I was just seeing what I wanted to see and would wait a week to weigh in before confirming anything. Tonight (six days out) however, I was just doing the same thing at the bathroom sink before bed and there is no denying it. In less than a week I am looking better and healthier than I have in years. I have long since gotten over any self-esteem or body image issues I had when I was growing up, but nonetheless it is overwhelmingly satisfying to see my sleeve work its magic literally before my eyes. I have a ways to go (my goal weight is 140) but I feel like this day is a defining turning point. Just wanted to share my excitement as well as get any advice you guys want to offer about the next few months (nutrition, exercise, anything) or just hear other people's stories.
