  1. Hi guys. I'm in the process of getting my checklist complete before receiving my surgery date. I am unsure of which procedure I want to get. I am 34 years old, 5'4 @ 225lbs. My BMI is 38.6 and I carry alot of my weight in my abdomen. I have type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and PCOS. I aspire to get pregnant again, but am currently suffering from infertility due to the PCOS. I had my consultation last week and am trying to make my mind up about which surgery is best for me. My doctor is basically letting me chose. Bypass helps eliminate the diabetes, but I'm not fond of the idea of having to take vitamins forever. I am a sweets eater. I love my sweets (cookies/candy)... I'm also feeling a little apprehensive. Hear me out. I want weight loss to happen. I need to lose weight! I’m tired of being the size that I am and how my clothes look on me. I yearn to look cute in the summer and wear the cute crop tops and not have a belly that looks pregnant. I want to look nice in a swimsuit. I want to feel cute in lingerie again. I’m so self conscious of how I look at the weight I am now. But what’s making me so apprehensive is the recovery stage. My buddy from nursing school just had a sleeve done 2 weeks ago and is telling me how rough the recovery period is going for her. I've also read how other peoples recovery processes have gone. It's tough but I know it's doable. I think I may be a little addicted to food. I ate sooooo good yesterday and ENJOYED it so much! I'll be eating good again today with the super bowl menu my husband has prepared. I'm so scared to have to give it up and I’m thinking/doubting if I can stay away once I get surgery. I need to hear a voice of reasoning to slap me out of this feeling I'm feeling. I'd appreciate it.
  2. So now that I’m 3 weeks post op, the last 3 nights barely any sleep because of acid reflux? I already take a 40mg acid reducer every morning. What is anybody doing if anything about the acid reflux.
  3. Hey everyone! I was sleeved on Feb. 1st and I cant wait to have some real food! One more week of full liquids. Any tips, tricks or recipes.... lets here them!

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I love reading this thread and seeing how well everyone is progressing. I had my surgery on November 9th and am now down 72lbs and feeling much better for it. I'm also learning to deal with the stalls and not panicking when they come. Hope everyone is doing well.
  5. Your body is in shock. I am 5 month post op a revision for ulcers and weight gain with my pregnancy (totally my fault). After both surgeries I didn’t really lose more than a few pounds the first month and then it just falls off. I am down 72 pounds at 5 months post op. didn’t get the not caring about food effect I did the first surgery which I like more actually because I can still eat within my diet and still lose weight. I’ve been through several stalls and I just put the scale away for a week or two, do what I am supposed too and keep losing weight :)
  6. Im sure this has been addressed before but has anyone felt some form of depression after gastric sleeve surgery? I did my surgery 4 weeks back and i feel sad, i miss food! it was such a joy for me, i used to look forward to going out for dinner or lunch. Now im wondering will i ever enjoy food again ? Will i ever be able to eat with my family again ? I went out twice with my family for lunch since the operation and i felt soo jealous ! I really wanted to eat and participate in that social activity but i only had tea[emoji24] Im wondering if i did the right decision .... Sent from my SM-G975F using BariatricPal mobile app
  7. Hi everyone, I had my surgery on 1/1/2022 SW 141Kg CW 125.8 Kg, for the last three weeks I have only lost 1.3kg, I aim to get my protein around 50-60g per day although I struggle with my water intake. My daily calorie intake is around 500-700. last check up was on 27th of Jan and my surgeon is expecting me to be around 120 by the end of Feb. Please let me know if its normal.

    Dipping my toe in!

Hi Crinkles, I'm in Ireland and 3 months post sleeve. The information on this site has been a godsend for me - there are lots of very knowledgeable folks about who are generous with their time and knowledge so whatever question you ask someone will have the answer. I hope the time to your surgery flies in. The first couple of weeks post op is hard but once you get past that you'll never look back!

    No Caffeine

My program allows caffeine. However, on my 5 week preop diet I wasn't allowed anything except the shakes. My first morning in the hospital, they gave me caffeinated lemon tea lol. I have a coffee about once a month now...but I switched to earl grey lattes in the mornings. I use decaffeinated early grey tea, sugar free vanilla syrup and steamed milk (protein!). I am coming up on my 1 year next month, and I haven't gone back to coffee 'full time' yet. Not sure if I will either! I still crave Diet Coke like crazy....but I haven't had it yet either. Just my tea and water (with flavouring) for now. Hope that helps!
  10. Let me get this straight. You're seeking permission from strangers on the internet to break your surgeon's rules, less than one week post-op? And calling approved liquids (an entirely appropriate temporary restriction) "unreal"? <sigh> Good luck. Sounds like you're gonna need it.

    No Caffeine

I stopped cold turkey during my pre-op diet, which was something because I drank a ton of caffeine: coffee, diet sodas, etc. I somehow did not get withdrawals when I stopped, and I can say now it was much easier than I thought! I'm now six months out, and haven't tried it again yet, and am not sure I will. I was tempted to try some caffeine a few weeks ago when I had to attend video meetings based on the South Africa time zone, so online from 2 AM - 10 AM, but I decided not to and was fine. Honestly, I don't miss it. I do miss my coffee ritual in the morning and while I could use decaf coffee, I also realize I'll then be tempted to use creamers and such that will add unwanted calories. I've created a new decaf tea habit and it is quite nice. At some point I'll try caffeine again, but I'm not really driven to do it now.

    Dipping my toe in!

Oh lordy 4 weeks of liquid only ! I forgot that. After a week I could have strained soups and broth and things like Bovril. I was so cold that I was thrilled with my first warm drink. Also milk shakes, coffee and such so it was not as bad as it sounds. Dont bother what you dont like now, your taste buds will change and you can find something you can accept. I have never managed any protein shake or protein water, I am so glad that I did not invest in many.

    Dipping my toe in!

Thank you both! SummerSeeker its nice to see others from the UK on here too! ah yes the pre op! hats off to you for doing 3 weeks! Mine is 2 and I am dreading it! Also worried about the 4 week liquid only diet too. I don't drink milk and I haven't found a milk substitute that I like either so that stage is going to be interesting!

    Dipping my toe in!

Hello Shelley, I am in the UK too, there are a few of us on here. Congrats on getting your date so quickly. It took me 8 months from my first consult which was about 5 months too long. It is normal to be nervous but you will find that its unnecessary. The only thing that I was unprepared for was the tiny portions that I can eat. The time I waited for surgery left me time to read lots of the posts on this forum, I went back 10 years. It has really helped me. I had a 3 week preop diet that I found tough but I knew from here that if I managed 4 days then it would get easier, it did but I could not wait for the surgery to come and end it. Good luck and post away

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Hello every one, I hope the world of wonderful weight loss is great for everybody and all stalls have broken. I have just come out of a 4 week stall and am overjoyed. My calorie intake was just too small to let my body loose anything. Now that I can eat fish and seafood my protein intake is going up to about 50 grams a day. I have no problems drinking anymore and am feeling the health benefits of that. Its been a bit of a struggle but I am getting there a little slower than lots of you but I dont mind being a straggler. My dietician said to begin exercising so I am going to begin walking. The weather is horrid here and I am going to have to force myself out of the door. I have started leaving clothes on the too big to clean up in pile. Instead of skirts sliding up my belly to my bra, now they slide off if I dont catch them quick enough . Not good when the postman comes. Have a good week everyone
  16. Hi everyone! I'm Shelley... 32 years old and mum of 4 mini me's! I have been contemplating surgery for a few years now and have finally made the decision to go ahead! I'm based in the UK but will be having my surgery privately as these surgeries are not easily available on the NHS. After my initial consultation last week my surgery has been booked for 12th April 22 with my pre op taking place on the 25th March! A very quick turnaround which is great for me as i'm a bag of nerves! I found this forum while google searching for other peoples experiences, thought I would join, say hello and share my journey.

    July 2021 Surgery People!

So I hit a milestone this week of 50kg lost. Which is around 110lbs. I can't believe I've lost so much and I feel so much better thanks to this surgery 😊 I am about 75% to my goal now and even though the weight loss is slowing down, I never thought I would be this weight by February! 😁
  18. Always best to follow your surgeon’s plan. It’s there for a reason: to support your post surgical healing & recovery. Remember all those sutures & staples holding your tummy together - all because you can’t see them, they’re there & they take time to heal. (Think of a wound with multiple stitches on your arm or leg & how long that takes to heal & how careful you have to be to ensure you don’t stretch or strain it.) While all plans a different, most are on liquids for two weeks or more before staring purées. And it’s not unusual for people to struggle on the next stage & find they need to go back a step for a couple of days. Glad you’re feeling so well after your surgery.
  19. Hi, I'm new here... I'm wondering about the stages of diet. If I feel up to it, can I take a few bites of very mushy or pureed food if I'm still in the full liquid phase? I'm not talking about anything major, but foods from the next phase. Eggs, cottage cheese, sugar free pudding... I basically just began phase 2 but it feels the same as stage 1 to me. (I'm not a full week out yet, but my dr said to begin phase 2 on 5 days out, which was yesterday... today was a big turning point for me in terms of strength and pain, and I'm TOTALLY sick of the liquids! I'd love to take in a little bit of something real.)
  20. Still in the pre-op phase here. Just wondering what everyone else is doing for diet? I had lost 10% of my weight at the 6 month preop time. Now I’ve gained back 5-7 pounds and can’t get past it. Up and down and back and forth. Wondering what you all are following as far as calories, macros, etc that seems to be working. Not sure if my body just freaked out at the 10% mark but I’m really struggling and I’d like to lose as much as possible before surgery if I can. I’m exercising doing CrossFit or walking/yoga 5-6 days a week. Any advice?
  21. At what point did you stop losing? I’m almost at a year, and have gone up/down the same 2 pounds for 2 months. I am happy at this weight (would love to lose another 10-15 pounds to be at a “normal” BMI), but am wondering if this is typically the end of weight loss. I’m feeling pretty good about continuing the daily maintenance it would take to stay this way long term. I’m not willing to do much else to lose weight because mentally, I feel I’d start obsessing, which would backfire eventually. I want to be at peace and not gain. 😊

Seven years out - experiences and lessons learned

Thank you for posting! After reading it, I am very glad I made the decision to go the RNY route instead of sleeve which was my original choice. I suffer from GERD and a sliding hiatal hernia that has me in pain most days. Until the pre op work up, I didn't realize I had either. I had assumed everyone suffered from heartburn. I would usually "just deal with it" without any meds. I made a point to start taking Tums EVERY time I had heartburn and the amount I was taking was quite the eye opener. I am excited to have the operation on March 3rd and get rid of the pain hopefully forever. Good Luck next week!!!
  23. P.S. If you stick to your clinic's plan and your overall weight trend is down, you're good. Some of us lose faster than others for a variety of reasons, that someone above listed. I was a slow loser from the get-go but followed my program to a "T", and I lost 100 % of my excess weight, over 200 lbs. As I wrote above, I was about at the same place as you are when I was 11 weeks out. So don't worry - you are doing just fine!
  24. it's caused by eating too much sugar in one sitting (or for some people, fat). Your small intestine goes into overdrive trying to deal with it. The most common symptoms are sweating, chills, heart palpitations, dizziness, and diarrhea. Throwing up after eating something that doesn't agree with you - or after overeating - is NOT dumping (contrary to popular belief...) that said, only about 30% of RNY patients dump - and it can be controlled by limiting the amount of sugar you eat at one sitting (or again, fat for those who dump on fat). I have never dumped, but I still feel kind of crappy if I eat too much sugar or fat. I can eat it, just not gobs of it at one sitting. I can eat all of that stuff you mentioned except for the fat laden meal. My husband and I used to go out for Friday night fish fries before I had surgery. Those typically included two or three pieces of fried cod (with tartar sauce), French fries, cole slaw made with mayo, and a roll with butter. Eating that now would have me in the bathroom throwing up. But I could definitely handle maybe one fried fish filet (provided the things I ate with it weren't fatty), or a few fries. I can also handle a normal portion of ice cream (we're talking maybe 1/2 C) - although some people can't handle ice cream at all. It seems to be a common culprit for setting off G/I distress in some patients. people are so different that all you can really do is try it and see (although wait at least a couple of months - you don't want to eat that stuff while you're still healing!!). Some people can handle it just fine - others can't.
