    Serious Decison To Make

You might listen to the reasons why he/she made the recommendation before you leap. In my case in addition to high blood pressure and diabetes and sleep apnea and other co-morbidities, I also had severe acid reflux (GERD). RNY was my surgeons choice and it was also mine. There were several individuals on this board that also had GERD but went with the sleeve and had to have a revision to RNY because of incompatibility with GERD. Some doctors are just comfortable with a certain type of surgery. It is their expertise. It is their preference. But there are also medical conditions that drive a specific type of surgery. After all do you really want to undergo the knife twice when once will suffice?
  2. 55 revised to bypass from lap band 10/26/15! Regret the lap band everyday and all the problems it caused including necessity of removal and revision to bypass! Was banded in 2010, and the Dr. Left to start practice in another state shortly after. I was left with no one to take care of my questions, concerns and problems. I suffered in hell, i threw up everytime I ate, had to eat around band to get nutrition. Finally 5 years later after a flare up in front of a new pcp, they thought I was having a heart attack in dr office. Took a ambulance ride and 3 days in ecu doing tests, found out lap band slipped up into esophagus, and was eroded in as well. Port had also turned. There was a ton of scar tissue to remove and the supposedly empty band had 11 cc's in it making that a real pain to remove. And just to show how much fun I had, the last 1/2 hour before I was released from hospital a nurse came in and gave me a shot in each arm, then explained to me it was a flu shot and a pneumonia shot. In the pre surgical prep I had declined these shots because I get sick from them. Anyway, the trip home from hospital is 45 minutes. Not halfway home I got ill, developed a fever. By the time I got home to bed it was 103.5. Called Dr., put ice packs all over to get temp down. As soon as ice came off, temp would go up again. Ice and Tylenol for a week. I'm now 6 weeks post surgery, just finally getting to gym to start exercising, and eating soft foods. I blame all of it on the lap band Dr.! But, I am trying to look at this better and hope the outcome works out well. Am sure I will need lots of support and counseling as well to forgive and move on. I will admit I have lost 45 plus pounds and can really notice difference. Especially tying my shoes!

    hernial hernia

Most surgeons will repair the hernia at the time of wl surgery. Mine was detected during my upper Gi and the Egd. Since gerd/reflux is common with the sleeve, repairing them will lessen the chances of you developing it. My surgeon said in severe cases revision to the bypass is needed. Knowing this I'd say insurances are eager to pay for the repair than to pay for a second surgery.
  5. To Amy n Cocoa...a little advice from a sleever who'll revise to gbp Friday, Lord willing. Don't think of anything as"one last", bc if you do, you'll only want it more. It's not like you'll never eat it again, itll just be "one last" time that it'll be that much of it in one sitting. The mind can be an ugly thing with the tricks it can play but we are in control of those thoughts and too can play tricks back. So keep telling yourselves, it's a life style change starting with smaller amounts, not zero amounts. I hope that made sense, im on my 10 day liq preop and my mind says give it a rest:)). But gl and know that IT'S THE LAST BIG PIECE of whatever, not the last piece; ). Gl

    Before and After Pics

What surgery did you have? What complications, may I ask? P.S. your arms are Amazing! Thanks for the compliment on my arms...it's funny though, I think that's my worst feature, lots of excess skin...I think that might have just been great photography! Lol! Anyways my complications are almost too many to list: large hematoma with drain tube one week after sleeve surgery, severe reflux and GERD, 3 strictures with dilations, 2 hiatal hernias needing surgery, a myelotomy surgery, revision to bypass surgery, central line put in for TPN, then finally 2 weeks ago a jejunostomy feeding tube put in for nutrition. Whew!Nails by Niki - thats unreal!! Was this or majority of all your complications due to the sleeve surgery? Im so sorry youve had so many different things happening to you. Yes, I truly believe all of these complications are directly related to the sleeve surgery first and then the bypass surgery. I just had another surgery yesterday to replace the feeding tube. Ugh! Here we go once again...

  8. Staceface09 Change doctors!A small slip???Either it has slipped or not...I am like you but with many more health problems."Get worse"????Why would you wait for it to do more damage??? A 40 BMI is not low are you kidding. It is morbidly obese.I have A 38 by I.I am morbidly obese.Ser another surgeon.Get at least a second opinion.I have major damage due to the band...seeking a revision to bypass.Get a surgeon that is supportive.
  9. I have had my band for exactly 9 years as of yesterday and I had an upper gi done yesterday due to issues with dysphagia, severe acid reflux and weight gain. Four weeks ago my surgeon removed 1cc of fluid and that has helped with the acid reflux severity at night but hasn't gotten rid of it entirely. I had no restriction and gained 15 pounds in 4 weeks ???????? However yesterday at my appointment after my upper gi, my doctor told me my band looks good but I have a small flap that could be considered a small slip but it's not too much to worry about yet and that my pouch is asymmetrical and bigger than it should be. He said that we are going to keep an eye on it and if it gets worse or I don't lose any weight more weight that we may look into a revision. He suggested a sleeve since my bmi is "low" (my bmi is 40). Wouldn't I qualify for bypass since I have co-morbidalities? (Sp) I'm so afraid of surgery now that I'm older but I'm also afraid of gaining all this weight back. I lost 80 pounds but I've gained 35 back just in the past few months

    Embrace the Stall

In 23 months I have had too many stalls to count. I did not have the 3 week stall. It seems like my first stall was at about 3 months. Not sure though. I have probably had 10 stalls or more. Some were longer than others. The sleeve was a revision so I know how this goes. I have not had many surprises. When you have a stall try the usual things, drink more water, increase your protein, exercise more, reduce your calories by 100 - 150 or maybe add 100 - 150 calories for a week or so. These things may or may mot help. Bottom line, trust the process. Don"t worry. Depending on when your surgery was, call your doctor if the stall lasts more than a month. You have to be comfortable with what your body is doing. You may not be losing pounds but you are probably losing inches.

    Moving right along!

So exciting!! I'm about to begin the band to sleeve revision process. My old insurance (Cigna) wouldn't pay for it. Hoping Aetna will. We'll see.
  12. I was not a revision but had a BMI at 45 and am currently at 25.3. I have lost 133lbs so far and have 11 to go. I am very very strict about getting my Protein, Water and Vitamins in every day. I have been restricted from exercise since June due to 2 spine surgeries and that is not going to end anytime soon. My weight loss slowed way down but I am still losing around 8lbs per month. I track every single thing I put in my mouth and have had many many stalls the longest lasting 28 days. I have had several people tell me I was likely done losing and I tell them they are full of crap. I may lose more slowly but it is up to me to follow the plan, if I do I will continue to lose. I get between 900 and 1200 calories a day with 70 grams of protein. I try to keep my carb intake under 90grams and I get a minimum of 48 oz, of straight water and usually more like 60oz. It can be done but you must push yourself hard and really look at your activity. Even though I cannot exercise in a gym, I keep my arms moving even when I am sitting and I try to walk as much as I can.
  13. I'm in the same boat--my revision is December 8! Let's stay in touch--we are both going to be fine!

    December 8 Surgery Date

Good luck. My husband just had the band to sleeve revision a little over a week ago. Know that we support you!! Good luck!!
  15. You've got this and more importantly you deserve this! Best of luck with the revision!
  16. I also had a revision on 11/16 from the band to the serve and so far I like it so much better. My biggest fear to date is losing my hair. I'm religious about my Vitamins and making sure I get my Protein in. It's hard because it's hard to eat in that I'm never hungry. But in down about 21lbs and super excited about the future. You'll do great. Wishing all the best of luck.
  17. My liquid diet starts December 7th. Currently struggling to lose a few pounds before then due to my band being almost empty : ( And Thanksgiving didn't help... My hospital has this amazing Protein supplement line. Each pack can be mixed with Water and has 200 calories. They have Soups, drinks, puddings, and most are delicious! The good thing is that they have all daily vitamins/minerals needed. I'm not sure where else they can be purchased but check out New Direction Weight Control System. The hot cocoa and lemon pudding are amazing! @@phatfatgirl How was your pain post-op? I'm having the band revised to bypass and also having my gallbladder removed! Getting very nervous and have already started having dreams/nightmares about it! Is weight loss slower with revision?
  18. Any band to bypass revisions with high starting bmi and slow weight loss ever make it to goal? If so, It would comfort me to hear it. Currently only down 60lbs since revision surgery four months ago. I'm 110 pounds down since pre lapband in 2007....but I still have over 75 lbs to go to make into onederland. Would ideally like to get 110 more lbs off to get to a normal bmi. Is this possible? I'm in a terrible stall/plateau/hellish nightmare...and havent lost anything in over three weeks. I know I need to improve on my Water intake. My Protein, exercise, suppliments, and calories are all ok though. Pre lapband I was about 387 lbs back in 2007. Currently 275 (four months after revision). Hoping to get to 160 eventually. Is this a pipe dream? Should I re evaluate my goals to a more realistic number? Maybe just getting into onederland will be the best I should expect? A "friend" of mine is saying I probably wont get under 200lbs. At first I thought she was just envious of my revision. (She had her lapband out - no revision - and is 220 lbs) But now Im worried she may be right. If there is anyone out there who was a high bmi with slow weight loss who made it to their goal...I would love to hear from you. Thanks!
  19. Hello, I am having revision to sleeve 28 December. I am ready because my lapband slipped last year and stopped working. Also the closer it gets, I am eating more even though I run and cycle. My current weight is 210, I have the working out part down, just need and want to lose weight so I can feel better about myself and be lighter on feet and on bike. Want to look better for a 51 year man. I want to run the New York Marathon next year. Good luck to everybody.
  20. Parisshel, I blame myself for going with the "hottest new thing back in 2004"The lapband is what the sleeve is today.I was going to revise to the sleeve until I did my research.I am revising to the bypass because there cannot be a 3rd operation.I must use the best tool to help me conquer my struggle. It is a matter of life or death with me.This new surgeon asked me what I wanted ...why not the sleeve??I told him and he he nodded in agreement.?.if I had wanted to get the sleeve he would of been more than happy! This band is just the worse. They should stop this procedure entirely.
  21. I'm not revising to anything (I have to get my band removed, but won't be moving forward with another WLS) but I will share with you what an expert bariatric surgeon told me about the bypass after band. The bypass is the ONLY revision surgery that should be done after a [failed] lapband, and the reason for this is that it is the only WLS that not only offers restriction, but also works on the feedback loop from stomach to brain. Your appetite and food choices will be completely different after the bypass. This is not true with the sleeve, which is merely restrictive, much like the band. (Band to sleevers, please don't jump on me for this statement. I know there are many of you out there that have had tremendous success with your revision surgery. ) This surgeon explained that if someone did not have success with a band, that same person would not have success with a sleeve. She stated is was not ethical for a surgeon to revise a bandster to a sleeve, knowing that that same patient would eventually be back for a bypass. FWIW, your decision to revise to a bypass is, according to this surgeon, the best way to move forward, as you will be altering not only how much you can eat, but what and why you eat. The bypass will effectively turn you into eating like a naturally-thin person, and for life. (Not just the "one sweet year" other WLS give you.)

    Getting nervous

I do not want to talk you out of lap band, but I will tell you I was dead set on getting lap band. It was removable, not permanent, etc. After I went to my docs seminar, I talked to a lady that was getting a revision sleeve from lap band. I have a great friend who has done wonderfully with lap band. I researched and read and researched more. I decided too many people were getting revisions and too many docs weren't doing them anymore. I decided to go with the sleeve. A big reason was the fact that I do not ever WANT to ever throw up or be nauseated. Also, I decided going back to doc for fills was a pain in the butt. I live five hours away from my doc. That was my thinking. Whatever you do, I am sure you will be successful!! It is very exciting when it is all said and done and the weight starts falling off. I am early in my weight loss but it is cool to see the lower numbers on the scale. Good luck to you !!!
  23. @@Kirsten Im sorry, I thought that I'd said that in my post earlier, my apologies. I am revising from sleeve to RNY on Dec 4th. The new surgeon said that that is my only option to get rid of my issues and Lord knows I'm praying that's the case. I go tomorrow for preop, im so glad to be getting this 2 week liquid phase over with although it'll be another 2 weeks postop but i won't want to eat anyways. Thank you for that info, i so greatly appreciate your concerns and willing to research. You're awesome! !

    Surgery done and dusted ????

Hi Cole I am looking at a revision possibly at the end of this month. I am concerned that bypass is very drastic for me and I don't want to lose too much weight. May I ask your weight before the revision?
  25. I'm being sleeved on dec 21st I in Houston. I also have a hernia and I'm a revision from a band that's 10 yrs old
