Newley banded.
LadyLeigh2012 replied to talameovee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told the same thing. I was put on a liquid diet as part of my pre-op protocol. The day before and the day of surgery I was on clear … so that would be about 48 hours. Liquid diet for first 2 week of post-op … this includes anything that can fit through a straw but is not carbonated. On Monday I will have my 2 week post-op visit and hope for the green light to start mushies! I, too, was told that pasta and rice are not included with this stage and to stick to things like cottage cheese, yogurt, applesauce, mashed turnips/potatoes/carrots, pudding, refried beans with melted cheese, guacamole, etc... This mushie stage will last from week 3 - 5 … as of week 6 I can add more in. It's a lot to remember and adjust to so I made myself a cool menu map that plots out each week and phase. I gave a copy to my family, hung one on the fridge at home, and put another copy in my work bag. -
Howdy fellow bandsters. So, I'm three weeks post-op and moved to mashed/pureed foods about three days ago. I haven't been very adventurist, just one soft scrambled egg and a little avocado for breakfast, some mashed potatos for lunch and a yogurt for a snack. Last night, I had some hummus and a slice of tomato for dinner and my stomach hurt so badly I almost cried. Today, I had the exact same menu but no dinner yet and my stomach is killing me. I can't tell what it is - I feel fine all day until the evenings. Is it sharp hunger pangs? Is it something I'm eating? I don't have a fill yet so its not a restriction issue.I suppose I should add I've been consuming a lot of benefiber because I'm not having proper bowel movements. Its been 18 days and I can't seem to go. Maybe the additional fiber is the problem? I would welcome any thoughts. Thanks!!!

I usually snack on a cheese stick, chips sometimes until dinner is ready. Most of the time I just wait because I really want what I'm going to cook. 1/2 a cup of yogurt is great also.

I live in Australia and we dont have all those high Protein recommendations here, nor are we given anything like the strict rules to follow that a lot of American patients seem to be. I tend to eat 3 times a day with an afternoon snack. I might eat Cereal with some fruit and yogurt from Breakfast, a ham and salad roll or sushi or cheese and crackers or Soup or even a bowl of baked Beans for lunch, some yogurt or maybe a small treat in the afternoon (like a bikkie or two) and then a normal family dinner, anything from spaghetti bolognaise to meat and 3 veg to more exotic curries and the like. Totally normal, everyday food. But I eat about half as much as I used to, probably get through a cup of food at a time. For instance, if I do eat a roll for lunch, I usually cant finish the entire thing.

First of all, I'm glad you're feeling restriction now! But as far as your meal plan goes, where is your Protein? I'm not sure what your doc's guidelines are, but I don't see any protein in that other than a VERY small amount in the yogurt. My doc said to eat 3-4 oz solid protein plus 1/2 cup veggies at each meal. I'm supposed to target 60 grams protein. Can you eat chicken, fish, beef, shrimp, Beans, tofu? Are you vegetarian? If so, you need to get some other protein sources in there! It sounds like you have plenty of restriction if that's all you can eat in a day. I think if you try to eat more solid foods you'll find that you have plenty of restriction. Yes, yogurt and bananas and even avocado can be classic slider foods--they mush down to nothing. Even crunchy cracker type foods mush down to nothing. You need some solid foods to a) get in your nutrients and make use of your restriction to get some lasting satisfaction. Personally, I'd stay away from the avocado while you're in active weight loss mode. Yes, the fats are "good" fats, but if you're actively trying to lose and aren't getting in your protein, you need to save that pouch space for more protein-rich, nutrient dense foods, not high fat foods. I hope you find this restriction gives you the kind of progress you're looking for. -
I had outrageous hunger for at least two weeks post-op. Very frustrating. Whether it was head hunger or actual hunger didn't really matter; they felt identical. My fear of hurting myself by "giving in" to the hunger is what got me through it. I spent too much money on my pouch to mess it up! I am now allowed to eat solid/regular foods. The most surprising thing is that I don't crave a single thing. All the stuff I loved 6 weeks ago doesn't seem appealing at all.[/quote I guess I am just surprised that it's so easy to drink the fluids with no problems. I was expecting to struggle.to get in the liquid and instead I feel like I can do all the liquid and eat as well. I am glad I'm getting fluids and can get the Protein shakes in, just wish I wasn't hungry! I am so looking forward to cottage cheese and yogurts!

Oh yeah, its on! I was up at 5 am and working out at the gym by 5:20 am this morning. Now, let me tell you, I was sooooo tired and didn't want to get up, after all I was at the gym until after 10:00 pm last night. But I knew that I would not be able to go tonight - so I forced myself up. I'm glad I did it! First of all, I had a great workout last night, it lasted 2 hours, I did 60 min on elliptical and 60 min with weights, working my lower body. This morning was pure cardio - did 45 min on the elliptical. Tomorrow, I'm planning on another 2 hours at the gym, planning on doing 60 min of cardio and 60 min of weights (working the upper body) Today's menu: 8:00 am - coffee w/cream 2 boiled eggs & 2 slices of thin bacon (290 cal) 11:00 - protein shake made with skim milk (200 cal) 2:00 - Tuna & broccoli (180 cal) 4:30 - yogurt, banana (160 cal) 6:00 - carrots & hummus (100 cal) 9:00 - Weight watchers snack - (140 cal) As you can see, I'm eating quite often, just small meals. Trying to blast my matabolism by eating every 2 to 3 hours. I also retook my measurements last night, and I did not weigh this morning. I put the scales up. I am avoiding the scales until 12/14/09. A two week progress check. I will re-measure and weigh at that time to see how I'm doing. Okay, I'm off to work..............

Do we all need 70 grams of protein if we do NOT have surgery?
Darktowerdream replied to Kelchicky's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
I don't eat a lot of meat or necessarily veggies. But stick to. Low carb way of eating and have for years but for some reason it stopped working and I turned to the tool of gastric bypass surgery to help me. Metabolic disorders and inability to exercise due to lifelong chronic illness and disability doesn't help. But I'm here a year and a half later after surgery. it helps to calculate your baseline protein using the ratio of 0.36 grams of protein per 1 lb body weight. I have a morning protein bar with tea it's my routine. Lunch is my main meal. I might for example have a skillet meal of veggie burger, egg and maybe a little avocado or even a baby banana cooked in. Dinner is routinely Greek yogurt usually oikos triple zero mixed with protein powder usually PEScience (but I tdon't tidy VEga sport and it's good too) some golden flax, a little peanut butter powder sprinkled on top, freeze a bit, top with sola low carb granola only 15 grams I measure everything. Sometimes a sprinkle of pepitas. I like a combination of flavor and texture. But I usually end up getting more protein than I require ... while being low carb . And minimal sugar. edit: you don't need carbs to feel satisfied and can get similar taste and texture profiles from low carb meals. I had to deal with sugar addiction long before I even thought bariatric surgery was ever an option. -
My nutrionist gave these samples for meals during the mushie period. Breakfast - 2 oz cream of wheat with vanilla Protein powder or 1 soft scrambled egg cooked with fat-free cooking spray and unflavored Protein Powder lunch - 1 oz (2 tbl) baby food turkey with unflavored protein powder or 1 oz (2 tbl) mashed potatoes (thinned with milk) with unflavored protein powder or 2 oz (1/4 cup) baby food pears with unflavored protein powder dinner - 1/4 cup low fat cottage cheese with vanilla flavored protein powder or 1/4 cup pureed peaches with vanilla flavored protein powder also can use blended Soups like vegetable, tomato, bouillon and low-fat cream soups (4 oz) well cooked and thinned oatmean, cream of rice, grits(no butter) sugar-free Gelatin, baby food fruit or unsweetened pureed fruit, light yogurt, sugar-free low fat pudding I have to have 1-2 cups of skim milk daily also. Hope this helps Don't have a band date yet - working on it.

9 days post op, feel great :)
alyssadietrch replied to alyssadietrch's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Well for the first week after the surgery I could have sugar free jello, sugar free Popsicles, broth like bouillon, crystal light in water, Gatorade powerade. Right now I'm in phase 2, so I can have skim milk, nonfat yogurt, low sodium cream soup that's been strained, cottage cheese mashed up. I attached a picture of the stuff I can have now. -
Just to add to the response above... during extreme weight loss, the body can also use muscle tissue to produce energy, not just fat. This is why strength training is very, very important for a bariatric patient after surgery. Some things that have changed for me after having lost 78 lbs: - Bowel movements are once or twice a week... and sometimes it's... difficult. This is because of how little we eat. - I sleep a hell of a lot better than I did at close to 300. I no longer wake up several times a night. - Bladder leaking while sneezing, etc issues are completely gone. I also no longer need to pee during the night. - I can wear dresses without my thighs rubbing each other raw. - Packing lunch for work takes me less than 10 minutes. It goes like this: Put a greek yogurt into the bag, throw a few shrimp into a container with sauce on the side, add a cheese stick for later, and Protein hot chocolate mix for the afternoon. Done. - Sex is a lot easier and more fun because mobility has greatly increased. - My periods, which had been irregular before, are now a lot more regular (still a bit off, but improving) .... I'm sure others will add some, but those have been some of the big ones for me

Smoky Chipotle Turkey Burgers! (And My Cooking Blog)
AbacoRaveness replied to alexeleni's topic in Regular foods (stage 4)
Oh no! That's the worst feeling. Early on when I was craving that taste, I put some chicken, greek yogurt, and some pickle juice in the food processor and made a "chicken salad" puree out of it. Don't know how far out you are, or if it would even come close to helping with your craving, but might be worth a try! -
Good morning ladies and gents! It is hard to believe I am on my second day post op! I am thrilled to say that I am doing well. No complications have cropped up yet. In fact if the wounds on my belly didn't hurt a tad, I would swear I didn't even have the surgery! I have had no trouble getting fluids or protein down. In fact its 6:46am and I've already logged 20oz of fluid and 10g of protein today. In fact, I was a bit concerned, like many others, who could consume more than they thought. Yesterday, my first "meal" consisted of 1 cup of chicken broth that I was able to consume in its entirety of 45 minutes, and I truly felt it was my own obsessive pacing that allowed it to stretch for that long. I then followed that up with 8oz of water about 30 mins later over the course of an hour. I did notice more restriction when I had lunch and started sampling different protein shakes, greet yogurt and pudding. However I still felt like I was able to eat more than I should have been able to. I mean don't get me wrong, I am NOT complaining at all. Being able to consume that much has made it easier for me. I've had more energy to walk, and don't feel exhausted. I attribute to the reduced pain to this as well. The tummy gurgling though... its wicked funny. My stomach was always silent. Now it chatting all day! I hope my fellow May 14ers are having as easy of a time!

I was on liquids for a week post-op, followed by four weeks of soft foods (aka mushies), such as cottage cheese, yogurt, applesauce, even baby foods!! At five weeks, I started on solid foods very slowly. My Bariatric Center gave me a booklet that had step-by-step instructions which I followed to the letter. I just hope your band hasn't slipped...

Oh, I don't know if there is anything there worth driving 21 miles for. I buy, the above mentioned soup, boxed lentil soup, chicken and beef broth, ff greek yogurt, canned chicken (when I was in the soft food stage), various condiments like whole grain mustard, fish sauce, olive oil, vinegars, hot sauces, marinara sauce (good and super low cal), turkey meatballs, lunch meat, various cheeses (so good!), various "burgers", like mahi , lime chili chicken and masala, soy ginger cod, Kettle Cooked Chicken Soup (refrigerated section), produce like romaine lettuce, cucumbers, shredded cabbage, zucchini, nuts (like flavored pistachios), cheap but decent wine (for guest I like, not love, lol), spiralized carrots (frozen), frozen gyoza (when I get an asian craving), Green Goddess Salad dressing (refrigerated), chicken sausage. I'm sure tons of other stuff I can't think of right now. They are actually really good at less healthy food too, for your family. Their Mandarin Orange Chicken is better than any restaurant I've tried, for instance. In general their products are very high quality for a very good price, while having a lot of interesting and ethnic options.

Enjoy!!! I had my surgery Dec. 7 and had 1/2 of a greek yogurt for christmas dinner. The good thing as that I wasn't hungry!!!! Wishing all the best in the new year!!!

Is this bandster hell? Please tell me this will end and I will start losing again!!!
SkinnyKathy posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded on September 9 and I quickly lost 12 pounds, in pretty much the first 5 days or something like that. But since then I haven't lost a pound. It's been almost two weeks since I lost anything. I've been following the diet pretty closely. I'm on mushies now and I'm eating non-fat cottage cheese, hummus, non-fat yogurt, soup, scrambled egg, and sugar-free protein drinks. I don't have much restriction now. My doctor said not to worry about portions right now, just focus on healing. I am not restricting my portions now, but I know I am eating far less food than I used to, and much lower carbs and calories. I am drinking unsweetened iced tea all day. I haven't started taking vitamins yet. I just joined Curves and I had my first workout today. I know I should be more patient, but I feel like I am exerting will power all the time and I have nothing to show for it in the past two weeks. I think I need to measure my portions. I already have an appointment for a fill at 4 weeks post-op which is the soonest I can get it done. I hope this will get easier in the future, because right now I feel like I am working hard and have nothing to show for it. Please tell me that it will get better!!! UGH!:bolt: -
4 Days Post Ops

Try vanilla protein powder, greek yogurt or lemon yogurt, milk or water, and lemon extract. Blend and chill until foam is gone. Tastes like a lemon cupcake. Delicious!
