    Band troubles

Hi, I've had my band for almost 4 years. I lost about 50 lbs total and I have gained back 30 of that. I got pregnant 6 months after my band and did fine throughout my pregnancy. I even breastfeed my son for a year afterward. I really think that breastfeeding boosted my weight loss. I had some problems and my band slipped and I have had nothing but trouble ever since. I go for a fill and its too much and i have to get it unfilled and gain weight. I'm seriously thinking about getting a revision to the sleeve. Any pointers? I feel like such a loser, but I so tired of being overweight. I feel like this is my best option. I really am at a point that I hate my band.

    Today is my 1st fill

Hi everyone, today I am going to have my first fill. I have been very hugry up untill today and I hope that this will help. Any suggestions on how I should get through the next week....I know that there is a chance of sliming. I have never slimed and I hope to keep it that way. Should I expect to lose more weight soon after the fill? I really hope so because I have been stuck at the same weight for about 3 weeks!

    REGRETS IN LIFE

I'm 10 months out and doing things I never imagined I would go! I went on an alpine slide this summer and i had to ride up on a ski lift! 70 pounds ago, I wouldn't have done it. I work out a the gym and the other day someone asked me a health question. Seriously? I talk to people I don't know. A year ago I was almost a shut-in. I rarely left the house and rarely spoke to people. I now strike up conversations with people at the grocery store and I find that people talk to me more now as well. I go to a hot yoga class every day - if you would have told me a year ago I was even going to attempt hot yoga, I would have laughed. A whole new world has opened up for me - this surgery and the subsequent weight loss is helping me become that person I was supposed to be. I have gained confidence, I have a better relationship with my husband and son, I have reacquainted myself with friends that I shut out over the years, I'm trying new things. For me, this surgery was not only a life-changer, it was a life saver!

    Curious Questions

    1) I see a lot of people talk about not having an appetite for foods they previously enjoyed or not being able to swallow certain foods. Why is this? My naive thought process is that your stomach had a procedure but your taste buds didn't and why would something that happened to the stomach impact your ability to swallow certain foods? I don't think anyone really knows why our tastes change. My best guess would be it has to do with elimination of a source of hunger hormone, plus gut bacteria get re-set through surgery. It is real though! As for swallowing, I actually haven't heard about people not being able to swallow something. If the taste or texture feels off, many people will choose not to swallow food after surgery. If it isn't soft enough, well-chewed, etc., it may come right back up after you swallow it. That's about all I know that would shed any light on that. 2) I see people talk about not losing much weight or immediately having hunger again. Why is this? Is there a percentage of people that a smaller stomach doesn't work for? How can you not lose weight with a significantly smaller stomach {aside from poor food or liquid choices}. I know we all have different metabolism and our bodies process foods differently - I don't necessarily believe in the whole "calories in, calories out" thing but ... seriously, how can your body not lose if your stomach is like 80% smaller and you follow the food/liquid rules? There are different phenomena that are possible here, and I am not sure which you are talking about. Some people experience stalls in weight loss, even early on (the three week stall for example), even though they are doing everything right. I'm not sure anyone knows for sure why that stall or any other stall happens -- glycogen depletion and replacement, hormonal changes, lots of things could be at work. Then there are people who lose a lot of weight and then either stop losing, or start re-gaining. Typically that's because of poor food choices: grazing all day, eating high-calorie, low-density slider foods, refusing to weigh/measure their portions and track calories and Protein, things like that. What is the percentage of people this just doesn't work for? Depends on your definition of "work for," as well as on your own surgeon. You would want to discuss rates of maintained excess weight loss for your specific surgeon with him or her. That whole "inverted gastric sleeve" sounds like a fancy name for over-sewing the staple line, which I think a lot of surgeons do.

    REGRETS IN LIFE

I do not know what age you are but as I got older my perspective as to what is worthwhile changed. When you look back on your life you will see what amazing things you did do , maybe not award worthy or what other's may consider spectacular but things that enriched your life. When you lose weight after your surgery you will be able to enjoy even more of these worthwhile but non spectacular things with your loved ones. Simple but enormous at the same time. Congratulate yourself for wanting to change and committing to a new life style but also embrace who you are now and what you have done.
  7. If you go the same distance you should be able to burn the same calories. But one can go a farther distance and burn more calories in a shorter amount of time running. As you lose weight you may need to actually run in order to acheive the same heart rate. You should be able to check and see what your heart rate is on a treadmill or elliptical at 4mph that is considered running speed. How fast are you currently walking 3.5mph or more and 4mph is the next step. That all being said running is rougher on the joints. But the endorphins are awesome:-) Good luck!

    I'm back in the groove!

Keep up the good work and way to go!! I do think that really working hard to get lots of exercise has helped me lose the weight. I also started as a light weight and am 50 with a metabolism that isn't like it was when I was in my 20's. We both had our surgery in March and will be at goal before we know it. Keep working it! I'm back in the groove!

good for you. . . in 3 months i only lost 15 lbs and didn't much like that either. . . spoke to my doctor who suggested that maybe mix things up a bit and the weight would come off quicker. . . so i stepped up on the eliptical and treadmill a bit and a bit more Protein shakes and less carbs. . . sure enough, there it went. . . good luck to you!

    Question about an unfill

Your weight loss could be just loss of fluids. Regardless of your band, fat loss is still just calories in, calories burned. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth and accept that you're a better informed and more disciplined eating machine. Something we all strive to be someday. Congrats!

    Question about an unfill

Youre right Im totally fixated on eating EXACTLY how i should be. I have a 2 month wait to see if its corrected itself due to the fact that my surgeon is in another state & i have to fly back for my check-up. I guess in my mind I hoped that if I was able to get back on track and lose some of the weight i regained, that itd give me an even better chance of correcting itself.

    Complete unfill...now what?

This happened to me! I was too tight and having GERD so bad so she took out 4cc in June and i gained almost 30 lbs, went in last Friday and told I can't be filled till I have another upper GI tomorrow to see how my esophagus looks, it was very big wide stretched out! And if it is still the same then I have to look into other options, this has made me very sad mad and depressed, none of my size 8 jeans fit and my weight came on in different places! I'm praying tomorrow 8/13 I can be filled! I was 172 and now at 198! I did try to watch what I ate and go to gym but to no avail!
  13. My surgery is in 6 days (10/31), so last night I began writing a "Letter to Me" as suggested by my doctor. (Obviously, the purpose is to record the reasons you decided on WLS in case you later have second thoughts or need a bit of motivation to stay on track.) Writing this letter led me to think about my fears and what I kept returning to was my fear of gaining the weight back. I'm not afraid of the surgery, the pain, or even the drastic changes required in lifestyle and eating choices. I'm not even afraid of not losing weight. I know I'll be successful because I've done it so many times before. What I'm afraid of (we're talking "heart beating out of your chest type fear"), is that I'll gain it all back. (This is certainly exacerbated by the fact that I'm self-pay and having the surgery in the US.) I'm guessing that I speak for most everyone in their 50's when I say that we've spent much of the past 40 years on one diet or another. And I'm guessing that most of us have had tremendous successes. Those successes are fabulous until they're followed by the inevitable regain, which of course, is followed by doubts and the self-loathing. I have every intention of following my doctor's orders to a "T", I am optimistic, and frankly excited about this surgery; however, if I'm being truly honest with myself, I'd have to say that in most of my prior weight loss efforts, I had those same feelings. Every single time I was 100% certain that THIS TIME I WILL BE SUCCESSFUL! Those of you that have fought this battle and are winning (I know it will never be truly "won" and the fight will continue the rest of our lives), what made this experience different? Why did this one succeed when the myriad of other attempts failed? What advice do you have for me? I truly welcome your comments and advice. Many thanks,
  14. Hi all. Hope you all are well. Between life getting in the way, exercising (yes, really!), and just not being online, I have not posted for quite a while. But I am doing quite good. I broke the 130-135 pound barrier. Last time I weighted myself I was 252. Wow. Whoda ever thunk it? And my energy is feeling much better. I have a 5K jog race goal for early June, and a 10K race goal for late August (at a Flint,MI, race called the Crim). Hope all are well!

    2 weeks post op HELP

Hi Christina! 19 lbs is great! I'm 3 weeks post op and have to say that i was very similar last week losing 20 lbs and then nothing. Of course we eat almost nothing for those 2 weeks after surgery so weight is bound to come off. After a lot of reading here, i'm probably not getting enough calories in during the course of the day. I know i wasn't getting enough Protein, but the calories were 700 - 750 or day and that maybe my body was going into store mode instead of shed mode. OOPS. So i kicked up some calories 2 days ago to about 900-1000 (Still on mushies so i'm experimenting with meals to increase a bit yet til i'm on soft food by end of the week) and i've noticed a difference just in my energy level right there. The biggest change to my diet was adding in canned chicken & tuna, BLENDED to mush with light mayo. Gives me about 140 calories plus 15 grams of protein in 2 ozs or so. I also found that after adding some food the BM's improved greatly between these two weeks & the gas is all gone now. Hang in there, you'll be moving on to the next food group soon! It did get better for me & i'm only a week ahead!!!

    Banded 4-12-12

Well i am almost in the same position because i had my surgery on 4/25/12 and i have no restrictions at all. I am able to eat basically what i want but choose not to because i am determined to loose weight. I just havent been back to the nutritionist
  17. I just moved back to San Diego after living in Australia for 5 years where I was banded in 2009. I have never done well with the band and not lost any weight. I am desperately looking for a support group that meets at least once a month. Please help?!?!
  18. O.T.R. sleever

    not enough protein..

You'll absolutely still lose weight w/o protein. Think of all that useless muscle you can get rid of, and who needs hair?

    Can’t believe it!

Some places have a 225 weight limit. The place we’re looking at is 250. I can swing that.

    Deflated Gastric band

Hi everyone. I’ve had my band for 5 years now without any issues and I’m at my ideal weight. However two days ago I suddenly can eat everything. I had a CT scan today and no issues at all with my band. Therefore, is it possible for my band to deflate!!!??? Thanks, Marina
  21. I had my surgery on march 1st so I'm almost 2 weeks post up. I have lost 15 lbs since surgery and 50 since I started on my weight loss journey in Jan 2011. When I went back to class from spring break someone said to me "Wow ur face is really slimming up" and I've also been getting so many compliments from ppl I haven't seen. I can slowly see the change in my face and body and I'm just super excited. Those little things, like comments from ppl or a glance in the mirror as you pass by feel soo good! Throughout the day I genuinely feel just more happy overall. I'm so glad I took this journey and even though it's just the start it feels so good. Just wanted to share. You guys are so inspirational and uplifting for me

    My "success"

You have done fantastic.....I have not hammered down a diet either and have not thought about it much....Really want to keep all this simple if I can.....I stand out enough by how much I eat....So eating extremely healthy like health nuts is not my thing....I am sure the weight loss will slow down for me as well and probably has...But I know it will happen this year or next.....Just moving at my own speed.....what ever that speed is....lol Great difference in your photos...You deserve this...
  23. I was sleeved on 10/2/2018 and am down 47lbs. I feel like my progress is slow but steady. I’m actually in the 250’s for the first time in YEARS! My hubby and I have a Vegas trip planned in January and my gift to myself if I’m under 250 is to go horseback riding for the first time ever. I’ve never been under the maximum weight in my adult life so I’ve always avoided doing it. I know it will be cold but I don’t care. My butt will be freezing doing something I’ve always wanted to do. I’m so excited. Now to continue this hard work. I’m about 60ish lbs from where I think I want to be, which is under 200, and it finally feels like a realistic goal! Here’s to being sexy in Vegas. To all my fellow sleevers “We’ve got this”! HW - 306 SW - 298 CW - 259 GW - none (just to be under 200) Height - 5’8 1/2
  24. That's me too... I ate way to much..now I'm back to weight watchers...the sleeve worked to lose 47 pounds.. But back to gain.. Hard to get your brain and belly on the right track[emoji200][emoji200][emoji200][emoji200][emoji200]

    To be banded June 28th

Hi, I was very happy to hear someone real and similiar out there. I taught in the ghetto of West Philadelphia for nearly a decade and the weight that used to be a litttle extra on my 5' 9 frame has increased to 310 lbs. over the sadness an horror at what I saw over the years. I left due to illness (Lyme, Fibromyalgia, Asthma, blah, blah, blah), the school district wouldn't allow me back and though I was broken hearted I believe that this is the first step in finding my life again and maybe getting back to myself and saving myself. As you know, in this line of work...our asses are always the last to be attended too. I am rambling on, anyway I too have the fabulously supportive and loving husband (1 1/2 years) and an awesome dog, my Morgan, my baby. He's our baby. Anyway, this is the first day on the forum with this big choice ahead and you really made me feel at ease. Hope you are doing well, Jenny
