Yogurt? Greek vs. all others.
Sophie74656 replied to BobbyD's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
you can get flavored greek yogurt. Greek yogurt is recommended because it has more protein -
I was sleeved Nov.18th. My recovery has been steady. I've graduated from pure liquids to soft foods. I was wondering if there is a downside to the more commercially available light yogurts. I get a lot of variety with Yoplait light. Lemon Cream Pie light one day, and banana Cream pie light the next. Key lime pie light and cheesecake light are also tasty. They give me variety and I am eating one to two a day. The thing is, I see everyone recommending plain Greek Yogurt and adding fruit. Seriously, I am in a position where it is difficult to find the time to do the blending in the early afternoons as I am at work. I realize I can adjust if it is important, so therein lies my question. Is it important to do plain greek yogurt and physically blend in the fruit or is Yoplait or a like product acceptable?

Protein Drink witch one
kdelrosso replied to sharoninidaho's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been drinking premier protein. They taste awful BUT have the most protein I have found in a drink. In 1 11oz bottle you get 30g and ideal is 60 to 80g a day. So I drink 2 a day so that gives me 60 and then eat yogurt or soup for any additional. I chase the drink with a sip of water to get the taste out of my mouth. But I would rather only have to drink 2 a day(I'll do 3 once after the surgery) then drink 5 or more with less protein. That's my suggestion hope it helps -
Weight loss on track but I eat a LOT
DavidOso replied to itstimealready's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
EVERYTHING that goes in my mouth gets measured, weighed, or portioned, and then logged in a food journal. i'm 4.5 months post op, and a meal is 2 oz cooked protein and 1/4 c. veggies, maybe 1 T. greek yogurt (as a mayo sub) or salsa. that's 1/2 c., 8-9 T. food TOTAL per meal. i eat 4 meals and have 2 watered down smoothies per day. total fluid intake 80-96 floz. if i have 2.5 oz protein at a meal, i feel full, too full. 3 oz would be like the third plate at thanksgiving. (by the way, i did not miss the gluttony of thanksgiving this year. i had tastes of everything i wanted and that was just right!) if you keep eating like this you will stretch out your pouch or worse, need emergency surgery to repair damage. is that what you really want? -
Why liquids for weeks after surgery? Did anyone cheat ?
tmcx28 replied to Scottyd1264's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What kind of liquids? I'm on liquids but "full liquids" and my surgeon allows blenderized Soups, Greek yogurt, thinned out cream of wheat, etc It is tough, but I'm only 5 days post op so I have no real desire to eat I just do it because I have to. I definitely couldn't cheat, I'm too afraid to damage my new stomach. At this point I've been on this diet for nearly 3 weeks so one more wont kill me. I am pretty excited for scrambled eggs and tuna though! -
If you can't tolerate any shakes, powders or clear Protein drinks then you need to start looking at protein rich foods. Yogurt, thinned with milk if need be, kefir, Beans pureed/strained then thinned with broth, chicken breast poached, pureed then thinned with broth. Spinach added to the beans or chicken (also pureed) will add some protein, Iron and Fiber. If it gets worse, you may need to have your doctor prescribe something for nausea.

Rinse, and dry on paper towels then freeze. Fruit is great to add to smoothies. Just separate them into bariatric serving size portions. Everything I listed will freeze well except apples and watermelon. I was adding fruit to my Protein drinks from week 1. I also like have a small amount of fruit with plain greek yogurt as a snack. If I add a scoop of vanilla Protein powder I'll have it for Breakfast.

I didn't eat fruit (other than avocados) for a few months after surgery -- I was focused on protein, and the carbs were just too high for my plan. Not eating fruit didn't hurt me! I was eventually able to add it back in. Keep in mind that you will be eating very small portions of whatever you are eating. 25 grams of blueberries (a very reasonable amount for a sleever to add to some yogurt) has 2.5 grams of sugar.

New sleevers how are you doing
tmcx28 replied to Joymarie333's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Getting in my Protein is near impossible. It makes me gag. I'm trying to mix vanilla protein in to my vanilla Greek yogurt to get some in but, ugh. I had to stop my pain meds because the taste was making me gag, so now I'm sore and crabby. I got in about 40 oz of fluids in so far today, which is a huge improvement. Earlier today I was worried I'd have to take a trip to the hospital for an IV. I'm pretty sure my veins have shriveled up and died. I've been super weak and fatigued but the gurgling in my stomach is lessening day by day which is making it easier to eat. I had planned on going back to work tomorrow but there's just no way I can do it. I'm so looking forward to puréed foods on the 15th! I knew what to expect before the surgery but man, I had no idea how hard it'd be. Anyone who says this is the easy way out has absolutely no idea how hard it is. -
Revision on 12/1! Very nervous!
liannatx replied to amyg80's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Glad you are doing good! I also felt like my Sleeve was easier recovery than the band... maybe I just knew what to expect. When do you progress to full liquids? I remember that being such a relief... to have thin Soups and yogurt! The liquids get old fast. -
Just got my pre-op date and my surgery date! Eeekkk!
Sun Godess replied to revisedtosleeve's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
kiba78 & banded4change, How exciting we will have ours on the same day! I do my pre op apt with the anesthesiologist on the 10th and will find out my surgery time then. I don't start my pre op diet til the 10th. I did buy everything I will need, so I don't have to worry about anything. I got Vitamins, Protein drinks and powder, etc. My preop consists of Protein Drinks, broth, unsweetened apple sauce, grits or oatmeal, milk, decaf, no creamer or sugar, greek yogurt, and vegetables. and goes down to clear liquids only 2 days before. I just hope I can make it on this diet for a week, I'm not worried about after surgery, cuz I won't be hungry like that, but before hand, will power and hunger scare me! Banded, good luck on your surgery! It sounds like you're all ready! Yikes! I haven't told anyone but hubby either. I am hoping this works because I have never been able to really stick to a diet for more than a week, and not lost more than 10-15 pounds and that was only 2 times...years ago! So, I'm hoping this will be the miracle I need! I'm ok with losing -2 lbs. a week, shoot that's more than I can consistently EVER do on my own! I just really need this to work, and I want to still feel normal in my daily life. I don't want to be deprived. -
What to have at home?
glitter eyes replied to mp24's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I brought extra small bowls and plates and baby spoons and forks to eat with. That really helped with portion control. Loved using the tiny spoons when I was able to eat yogurt. They helped slow me down. A good scale came in handy when I was able to start purée and solids. -
I have felt literally perfect until friday. I started feeling lightheaded. Friday I didn't get much down at all. Yesterday I felt better and got my fluids and protein in. Today I have had 19 g of protein, some milk, yogurt, and soup. I feel really lightheaded. I know my body is changing. I have lost 17 pounds since surgery date. Am I doing something wrong? I will call doc tomorrow, but I wanna have a good day to day and get some things done.

How much should i be able to drink?
cindyw41 replied to Wehrm's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
2 days post op I will still be on clear liquids. 3-4 days post op I will be on full liquids (Protein drinks, yogurt, Jello exc). During the full liquid stage all of it contributes to the daily intake. -
Why do I feel Hungry all the time
FrankyG replied to Kisha42's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh my. Just like Babbs said, you're eating too many carbs so of course you'll be feeling hungry. Carbs cause carb cravings and not eating protein is going to make it even worse. Protein is absolutely the first thing you eat and should be the large portion of any meal for the rest of your life. It doesn't matter if you aren't eating sugar. Simple carbs like potatoes or grits act just like sugar in your body and the more you eat them, the more you'll want to eat them. And not eating enough protein will really screw you up - your body will start burning muscle instead of fat, your skin and hair will suffer and the fatigue will get worse... not eating your protein is just all around super bad. chicken, fish, beef, low carb yogurt, cottage cheese, regular cheeses, high protein/low carb milk (like Fairlife or Mootopia), Beans (refried are awesome with a bit of cheese and/or sour cream)... there are so many things you could be eating that are way better for you. Your sleeve isn't the issue; it isn't the problem - your food choices are. Please do the reading and research on here for good protein meals and recipes, as you are heading down the wrong road right now, but you can turn this around if you're willing to try. Good luck!! -
I litteraly am dying. Trying not to laugh as hard as I have been becuase my partner is asleep next to me and the bed is shaking. I am making myself eat the greek yogurt not only for the protien but also for the probiotic element. If I dont watch it sometimes I too will call the demons back to hell with a little bit of sludge.... Good luck

How much does my stomach hold? Not feeling "the full feeling" at all.
Warriorgyrl replied to cindyluc's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am about to start my 4th week out and am on pureed. My first 2 wks on liquids and shakes, I got down my 2 oz shakes like they were nothing. I've felt hunger, real stomach hunger like what it feels like when you've gone hours without eating, since week 2. Pureed has been my most miserable phase. I feel hungry, fatigued, pissed, irritable, impatient, undernourished and went the first week with no desire to eat. Now I want to eat and am stuck with greek yogurt and mashed potatoes as the only things protein powder dissolves in. I crave fresh food and anything of substance. This whole process will really mess with your head but I was told to follow doctors orders and I WILL stay the course in spite of the challenges. My gurgling has quieted down some, bowel movements are getting there since I started pureed, my gas is less often but still potent and I go to bed hungry. I'm actually scared to eat solids b/c my first week on pureed, I could feel everything go down, hurt, kinda come back up then finally go away. I was nauseous for days over the sensations. Got sick twice. I was so excited to start pureed and it's been so disappointing. But this is the bridge phase to soft/real foods so I know its going to improve and my sheer WILL is going to get me past this. We can do this!!! We've waited our whole lives for the freedom that awaits us!! Every gurgle, reflux and fart I just say its a small price to pay LOL!!! Hang in there with me!! My HW was 309, I think I was 291 pre-op and now I'm 264. It has begun!!! -
I do the same as @InnerSurferGirl - no artificial diet foods. I eat zero fat yogurt, but that's made with skim milk. Otherwsie it's real butter on the rare occasions that I have it. I try to stick with healthy fats, but I don't avoid them.

Just got my pre-op date and my surgery date! Eeekkk!
Sun Godess replied to revisedtosleeve's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi All! I too am days away from my pre-op diet and surgery. I start my pre-op diet on the 10th and have surgery on the 17th. It's getting real now that it's days away, and I am most terrified of the pre-op diet! I am really worried that I will be starving on liquids and veggies and yogurt for a week, and if I can actually do it without cheating. I think it's going to be torturous. I am ready, but do waver at times, wondering if I could just get it together and do this without surgery. Then, I get excited because I feel hope on the horizon, and that going through with this could finally bring success at losing weight. So, I am experiencing some moments of mixed emotions, but I have come this far and am ready for change and a healthier life. I just hope, I will be happy I did this, and adjust well to banded life. I am not telling anyone except my husband, of course, and I am feeling as it gets closer that I wish I actually knew someone or had other real people around to talk to. Today I logged on and saw so many other December banders, and that was nice, so I will be checking in and hope to share our adventure! -
At 5 days out thinking about food is perfectly normal. Just make sure you keep it down to thoughts and not actions. You've come this far as long as you stay the course it will be fine. Meanwhile find something else to occupy your mind. Once you start to progress back to foods, you can experiment with ways to get the flavors you like in a more healthful manner. For example I found that yogurt mixed with Protein powder and allowed to sit in the freezer for a bit, made a good substitute for pudding and gave me a nice protein boost. I also discovers black bean Pasta which helped when I wanted pasta. Many have reported liking the Campbells (I think) Soup starters. They have flavors like tortilla soup and such. Mixed with a bit of unflavored Protein Powder it can be a nice variation from sweet shakes. But use this time to think about how to adjust your eating habits. A year from now one slice of pizza and a salad may be satisfying, or you'll find you no longer even crave pizza.

Any Manhattan Sleevers i need help with more food options
Rdsegobia replied to luz1941's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I usually only eat one shake a day and still hit 90 to 100 grams of protein. Morning I have 3 egg whites with spinach, tomatoes onions and jalapeños, snack I have a chobani Greek yogurt, lunch usually 3 oz of chicken breast or any other lean meat with a side of vegetables ( broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, mushrooms) anything that it's steamed vegetables ( I don't have any starch vegetables example corn, potatoes, carrots). Dinner I have my protein premier shake and later on I usually eat 1/2 cup of cottage cheese and as a snack cucumbers, jicama with lime a chili powder. I'm 5 days away from being 4 months post op and sorry I'm from Texas not Manhattan???? -
I have a picky sleeve that 6 months out still hates poultry--particularly breast meat, is hit or miss on pork, fish and eggs, but tolerates rare steak just fine (go figure). Greek yogurt is still a staple as are soups and shakes. Some days my sleeve even decides shakes are a no go....mostly if i drink it too fast though.

Looking for sleeve partner 11/23
TheNiceVoice replied to readyforchange15's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Checking in! I spent 12 hours at the ER a few days ago due to dehydration. I had an indescribable pain on my left side. It hurt every single time I inhaled. I didn't want to take pain meds - but had no choice. I seem to be doing a lot better. I'm eating creamy Soups, yogurt and cottage cheese. Being able to add variety to my diet has made me so much happier. I have diabetes . . . so my blood sugar has been SUPER LOW . . . and I'm frustrated that my doctors have not given me specific instructions about how to handle this because I can't eat! Also, I'm on a host of meds that require food when eating. So if I can't eat, what do I do? Doctors have been vague with their instructions. I have a dietician appointment next week. I know it's early, but how much have you all lost? I'm 12 lbs down.
