  1. Oh my. Just like Babbs said, you're eating too many carbs so of course you'll be feeling hungry. Carbs cause carb cravings and not eating protein is going to make it even worse. Protein is absolutely the first thing you eat and should be the large portion of any meal for the rest of your life. It doesn't matter if you aren't eating sugar. Simple carbs like potatoes or grits act just like sugar in your body and the more you eat them, the more you'll want to eat them. And not eating enough protein will really screw you up - your body will start burning muscle instead of fat, your skin and hair will suffer and the fatigue will get worse... not eating your protein is just all around super bad. chicken, fish, beef, low carb yogurt, cottage cheese, regular cheeses, high protein/low carb milk (like Fairlife or Mootopia), Beans (refried are awesome with a bit of cheese and/or sour cream)... there are so many things you could be eating that are way better for you. Your sleeve isn't the issue; it isn't the problem - your food choices are. Please do the reading and research on here for good protein meals and recipes, as you are heading down the wrong road right now, but you can turn this around if you're willing to try. Good luck!!

    Gas, explosive style!

I litteraly am dying. Trying not to laugh as hard as I have been becuase my partner is asleep next to me and the bed is shaking. I am making myself eat the greek yogurt not only for the protien but also for the probiotic element. If I dont watch it sometimes I too will call the demons back to hell with a little bit of sludge.... Good luck
  3. I am about to start my 4th week out and am on pureed. My first 2 wks on liquids and shakes, I got down my 2 oz shakes like they were nothing. I've felt hunger, real stomach hunger like what it feels like when you've gone hours without eating, since week 2. Pureed has been my most miserable phase. I feel hungry, fatigued, pissed, irritable, impatient, undernourished and went the first week with no desire to eat. Now I want to eat and am stuck with greek yogurt and mashed potatoes as the only things protein powder dissolves in. I crave fresh food and anything of substance. This whole process will really mess with your head but I was told to follow doctors orders and I WILL stay the course in spite of the challenges. My gurgling has quieted down some, bowel movements are getting there since I started pureed, my gas is less often but still potent and I go to bed hungry. I'm actually scared to eat solids b/c my first week on pureed, I could feel everything go down, hurt, kinda come back up then finally go away. I was nauseous for days over the sensations. Got sick twice. I was so excited to start pureed and it's been so disappointing. But this is the bridge phase to soft/real foods so I know its going to improve and my sheer WILL is going to get me past this. We can do this!!! We've waited our whole lives for the freedom that awaits us!! Every gurgle, reflux and fart I just say its a small price to pay LOL!!! Hang in there with me!! My HW was 309, I think I was 291 pre-op and now I'm 264. It has begun!!!

    Very discourged

I do the same as @InnerSurferGirl - no artificial diet foods. I eat zero fat yogurt, but that's made with skim milk. Otherwsie it's real butter on the rare occasions that I have it. I try to stick with healthy fats, but I don't avoid them.

Eating soups, broth and yogurt still. Monday I can add peanut butter and bananas.
  6. Hi All! I too am days away from my pre-op diet and surgery. I start my pre-op diet on the 10th and have surgery on the 17th. It's getting real now that it's days away, and I am most terrified of the pre-op diet! I am really worried that I will be starving on liquids and veggies and yogurt for a week, and if I can actually do it without cheating. I think it's going to be torturous. I am ready, but do waver at times, wondering if I could just get it together and do this without surgery. Then, I get excited because I feel hope on the horizon, and that going through with this could finally bring success at losing weight. So, I am experiencing some moments of mixed emotions, but I have come this far and am ready for change and a healthier life. I just hope, I will be happy I did this, and adjust well to banded life. I am not telling anyone except my husband, of course, and I am feeling as it gets closer that I wish I actually knew someone or had other real people around to talk to. Today I logged on and saw so many other December banders, and that was nice, so I will be checking in and hope to share our adventure!

    New and doubting

At 5 days out thinking about food is perfectly normal. Just make sure you keep it down to thoughts and not actions. You've come this far as long as you stay the course it will be fine. Meanwhile find something else to occupy your mind. Once you start to progress back to foods, you can experiment with ways to get the flavors you like in a more healthful manner. For example I found that yogurt mixed with Protein powder and allowed to sit in the freezer for a bit, made a good substitute for pudding and gave me a nice protein boost. I also discovers black bean Pasta which helped when I wanted pasta. Many have reported liking the Campbells (I think) Soup starters. They have flavors like tortilla soup and such. Mixed with a bit of unflavored Protein Powder it can be a nice variation from sweet shakes. But use this time to think about how to adjust your eating habits. A year from now one slice of pizza and a salad may be satisfying, or you'll find you no longer even crave pizza.
  8. I usually only eat one shake a day and still hit 90 to 100 grams of protein. Morning I have 3 egg whites with spinach, tomatoes onions and jalapeños, snack I have a chobani Greek yogurt, lunch usually 3 oz of chicken breast or any other lean meat with a side of vegetables ( broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, mushrooms) anything that it's steamed vegetables ( I don't have any starch vegetables example corn, potatoes, carrots). Dinner I have my protein premier shake and later on I usually eat 1/2 cup of cottage cheese and as a snack cucumbers, jicama with lime a chili powder. I'm 5 days away from being 4 months post op and sorry I'm from Texas not Manhattan????

    Picky Pouch

I have a picky sleeve that 6 months out still hates poultry--particularly breast meat, is hit or miss on pork, fish and eggs, but tolerates rare steak just fine (go figure). Greek yogurt is still a staple as are soups and shakes. Some days my sleeve even decides shakes are a no go....mostly if i drink it too fast though.

Checking in! I spent 12 hours at the ER a few days ago due to dehydration. I had an indescribable pain on my left side. It hurt every single time I inhaled. I didn't want to take pain meds - but had no choice. I seem to be doing a lot better. I'm eating creamy Soups, yogurt and cottage cheese. Being able to add variety to my diet has made me so much happier. I have diabetes . . . so my blood sugar has been SUPER LOW . . . and I'm frustrated that my doctors have not given me specific instructions about how to handle this because I can't eat! Also, I'm on a host of meds that require food when eating. So if I can't eat, what do I do? Doctors have been vague with their instructions. I have a dietician appointment next week. I know it's early, but how much have you all lost? I'm 12 lbs down.

    Nobody wants my food!

Hi! I got tiny Tupperware containers - tiny- the smallest they make holds half a cup I believe. Then, I batch cook(just did turkey chili) and freeze half of more of it in the tiny Tupperware. Easy to reheat. But otherwise I know what you mean - I just threw out yogurt cottage cheese and even chicken. I think we need to get used to buying less! My motto used to be to stock up while shopping. But now my fridge is really sparse. Good luck!
  12. Try the clear drinks instead. Isopure make premixed ones, Syntrax nectar can be made with Water. I used ProSource NoCarb the first 2 weeks post op. It was great thinned with water or added to herbal teas. Also look for protein rich beverages. Kefir ( a yogurt drink), cream of chicken, beef, etc... thinned with broth, etc... Milk of choice: cow, hemp, almond have the most protein.

    Surgery done and dusted ????

Only 4 days apart ???? I am doing really well at the moment. I contacted my consultant as I was struggling to eat yogurt and jelly as was finding it so sweet it was making me feel sick. I was told to try cut up eggs and also very soft mash potato. So for a few days I have been eating soup, eggs, soft low fat cheese and potato. Very small portions though. I think this was really early to have introduced these foods but so far I have had no reactions to it. I have also lost 8lbs since last Thurs ???? My pain is a lot easier and mobility nearly back to normal although I am not lifting or carrying my baby boy as yet. How do you feel now? Are you still wondering what you have done or are things easing for you now? ???? xx

    What are slider foods?

Slide foods are foods that go down very easily, so things with a high liquid content or things that dissolve quickly and easily in Water. Think of when you eat a cheeto, how dissolves in your mouth before you even swallow it? That's a slider food. Probably the best example of that would be cotton candy. So, chips, cheetos, some crackers, breads and cakes. Then super liquidy foods like Soup or ice cream or milk shakes. Things that really do just pass right through your sleeve so you don't experience any restriction. Early on, like just a few weeks post-op, things like soup and yogurt and such do fill you up, due to the swelling you still have in your stomach. But once you are several months out and all healed up, you will see that stuff like that just goes straight through.

    Torani vs extracts

I personally cannot drink the SF Torani. It has a bad after taste that I couldn't get past. I also cant eat Kale either or the SF popsicles everyone seems to be able to eat post-op. I have added vanilla to FF greek yogurt and have added the powdered PB to yogurt as well. YUM
  18. I happen to love cheese, and cottage cheese has come to be one of my go to meal and snack staples. I like cottage cheese plain, but I also like it topped with something tasty. I like it with various toppings and add-ins like: Freshly ground black pepper Fresh, ripe, sliced tomato Fresh herbs (like dill) Fresh fruit Cucumber yogurt salad Greek salad toppings Kalamata olives Pickled beets Dash of salad dressing What do you like to add to your cottage cheese?

    Torani vs extracts

I use the Torani sugar free flavorings all the time. I use it for Protein drinks as well as my coffee and yogurt. I buy the plain greek yogurt and add a splash of Torani. Freeze that mixture and you basically have ice cream. Oh, my favorites are the salted caramel and coffee liqueur.

Proper Meal size at 3 weeks

My program says 1/3 cup of food at each meal. Most of a scrambled egg. Half or so of a container of yogurt.
  21. I was told 60-80g Protein and 64oz Water MINIMUM. And to stay away from bread, Pasta, rice, sweets and alcohol. That's it. The nut even laughed when I asked about calories and fat vs nonfat yogurt. She said I will be eating so little that as long as I was getting my protein and water and following the guidelines I certainly didn't have to worry about calories, fats or carbs. So I never did bother to count or track or measure. I get my protein, I drink my water, take my Vitamins, I eat healthy and eat smart. It's very simple and at two years out and maintaining 10 pounds below goal, turns out she was right. I was, however, concerned about not wanting to be low cal for very long....didn't want my metabolism slowing down. So I did "spot check" my calories a few times. I was never below 500 and mostly stayed at 600-800 the first 4 months, was up to 1000 at 6 months, 1200 by 8-10 months and last I checked, about 10 months ago, I was maintaining at 1400-1600 calories. I've never counted carbs or fat, so can't help you there.

    I am PISSED!

Totally agree with the others about the fact that you're in a stall, and read that post that Inner Surfer Girl wrote. But have to point out that your eating crackers or taco shells (soft or hard) at just a month out is also a danger, and makes me wonder what else you're eating that is very bad. You should not be eating simple carbs - bread, crackers, Pasta - at this point. And ritz crackers are carb bombs with absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever - even if you only ate two of them, they are bad for you and should be eaten very occasionally and months and months from now. Eating crap food this early in the game just means you don't have the right tools and mindset to help you work the sleeve (and I blame your doc for that if they didn't give you a good guideline of what you should be eating at each point in your journey!). Strangely, if you eat too little, that can also cause your body to hang onto every last pound due to starvation mode. It will eventually start back with weight loss, but it will be loss of muscle, not fat! So try to up your calories by eating more Protein and healthy foods, and get some good ideas for healthy meal options down and you should be okay. This board is great for support, so definitely vent, ask questions and do lots of research! High protein yogurt (there are many low carb versions; I like Kroger's carbmaster brand), canned tuna fish or chicken with a little light mayo and a green onion chopped up, baked fish like swai fillets seasoned with any variety of spices, Fairlife or Mootopia milk (lower carb, high protein milk)... there are so many things you could be eating that are going to be high protein and low carb. Save the crackers for many months from now (and try to find low carb or at least the whole wheat versions then), and concentrate on protein and healthy veggies. There are tons of great recipes here if you and also out in the googlesphere - search for sleeve diet recipes or similar. I'm sure you'll find some ideas that will taste good and be way better for you. It's early days yet. Don't panic - you're not a failure. Just focus on the liquids, the right foods and exercising, and you'll do great.

    Started the liquid diet

Thank you everyone for your advice !! I'm trying to get as much protein in as I can so that's why I chose the premiere. After this second drink and my yogurt I'll be at 75g for the day. Then I'll snack on soup or something. I appreciate all the advice and support !

    Phase 2, puréed!

Jello and yogurt yes. pudding only 4 oz/day. Tonight I ate 1 tbsp part skim ricotta with 1 tbsp pureed chicken mixed together. With some tomato sauce maybe 2 tsp worth and sprinkled some low fat mozzarella on top. I thought it was good. Ate 3/4 of it. Lots of tunafish/ chicken/ egg salad

    Phase 2, puréed!

I started the soft foods stage yesterday. My doctor does allow yogurt (Greek yogurt). Thus far, I have had thin-sliced turkey deli meat (also on my list) and some yogurt. pudding and Jello are not on my list. I think that the thinking is that those do not have much Protein and the priority in eating at this stage is eating soft things with protein.
