    Social eating after gastric sleeve

I was eating a meal anyone could eat from soft food. Sure they were way smaller portions & sometimes without certain sides. I made things like chicken stew spaghetti bolognese (without pasta) in my first week of soft foods. Some recipes I tweaked to make them healthier & to meet my plan but there wasn’t anything anyone couldn’t eat. I regularly had breakfast with girlfriends from solid foods. I’d order a single egg scrambled no toast. I was allowed green tea from the beginning which I drank anyway so no change in my routines. Dining out was pretty easy too. Just careful & considered food choices & small portions. I usually order entrees (US appetiser) & I don’t worry if I can’t eat everything if I have to get a main meal portion. If I’m able I’ll take home the leftovers. Of course a lot of this depends upon the type of food your family eats & what they still want to eat. I live alone so it is easier for me, but I often spend weekends with my mother, eat with my siblings & their families, dine out for lunch & dinner, have friends & family over for meals. No problems. My sleeve really doesn’t stop me eating anything (except bread, pasta, rice, potatoes that sit heavily in my tummy) & I have to avoid dry, coarse foods (but a good sauce & eating carefully helps). What stops me eating certain foods is me & the eating plan I’ve devised to help me maintain my weight & be healthy. At 6 months I could eat almost 3ozs protein & maybe 1/2 cup vegetables but sometimes less. It took me into my second year before I could eat about a regular portion size - e.g. 3 - 4 ozs protein & a cup of vegetables. But that was me & we all take our own time.

    Kinda annoyed and confused

I found keeping an eating schedule much easier too. I still follow one though with a little flexibility based upon how I’m feeling (hungry/not hungry) & what I’m doing. Generally, at three years, I do breakfast at 8:30, snack at 12, lunch at 3:30, dinner at 6 & snack at 7:30. Sometimes there’s an extra snack before lunch but then lunch & dinner are later. Initially I started because I wasn’t hungry or interested in eating after surgery. Then when I was trying to stabilise my weight, it helped to ensure I got in the calories I needed to stop losing & now it’s to meet my higher protein goals. (It’s why I snack so often too.) Give it a go. You may find it helpful too

    Drinking. Enough water!!

i am almost 5 weeks post op and i still struggle to get enough water in. I do wake up a couple times a night with a very dry mouth and i keep a water container next to my bed. But i know i am not getting enough water by the color of my pee which is what the surgeon told me to watch. water is difficult.
  5. Hello Everyone, I am new here and just had my sleeve surgery on May 11. So far everything is going well, however mourning a little the social aspect of eating with family and friends, being able to grab coffee from a local coffee shop, etc. I was wondering at what point could you eat a ‘normal’ meal again, of course smaller portions. What is dinner with family like 3 months, 6 months, 1 year post surgery. Do you eat what they eat but smaller with focus on protein? What is eating out socially like? I have heard many veteran sleevers say they can eat everything but now with greater portion control. Is this true? At times i feel there is mixed messages around what life is really like post gastric sleeve and want to hear from those at various stages on this journey. Thank you.
  6. That’s what’s odd. My iron is perfect. I have blood work every 3 months and just had it done. I have always had great iron levels. Even pre surgery.
  7. I had a vasovagal syncope episode last summer & broke my ankle on the way down! I was in the handicap stall in a bathroom at a restaurant so I’m lucky it was only my ankle. I could of hit my head on the toilet or the tile! My daughter has also had one & she has had a bypass also. But looking back I have had them before. I think it’s related to my iron & farrin being low. I do have a history of anemia. I have been working with a naturopath who has me taking RBC Support Iron Extra & Ferrofood instead of iron pills. You can buy them both on Amazon. I’m not as tired as I used to be & my blood work is looking better.

    Feeling fat after vsg

I'm feeling it too, but as a result of not seeing the drastic and rapid changes I did in the first few months. I actually GAINED weight for the first time since being sleeved and while it was just 1 lb., it was disheartening. I got used to seeing the number drop by several pounds each week and the gain was sobering. I felt like it was the start of a downward spiral. Anyhow, I'm afraid of not being as pleased with how I look in the mirror, but it is what it is. We've made huge strives and I'm trying to keep that in mind.

    VSG with no Thyroid

This brings up a question I logged on to ask! I've never had a thyroid issue until my labs came back almost 4 months later (now). They indicate a low TSH, but my T4 was normal. Doc thinks it's an anomaly so I'm going back for more bloodwork in 6 weeks. Has hyperthyroid begin after WLS? I'm thinking it might've resulted from that...

    May 2022 surgery?

Hi. Newby here. Post surgery (May 4) gastric sleeve. I’m on soft foods this week and the first day eating something I could actually chew was HEAVEN. Well, it was a couple ounces of tuna, but it felt wonderful. Up to a few days ago I was not experiencing complications, but then I started having sharp burning pains near my left incisions. It was only when I stand from sitting or bend. Now it’s more frequent and more intense. It really hurts, but the nurse says it’s a sign of internal healing and should subside in a few weeks. It feels like the opposite. More like the stitches are ripping and the burn is excruciating at times. I’ve tried wearing a binder to hold in my belly thinking the extra weight is pulling the incision, but the touch of the material seems to intensify the burning sensation. Anyone else experiencing/experienced this? Did it eventually go away? Hearing that will give me hope.

Glad to hear that you got the answers that you were looking for. I am 14 months and I eat about every 3 hours still. Breakfast is a protein shake at 9, lunch at 12, snack at 3, dinner at 6 and snack at 9. I set alarms until I got used to it but now that have been doing it for a while and my hunger has come back my body tells me it’s coming up on time for my next meal or snack.

    Blah...my first stall...

I decided to check today just to see if I really am in a stall and yep, sure am. I gained another pound, definitely stopped losing, haven't changed anything in my routine. But thanks to this forum, I'm not letting it get to me. NOW I'm not weighing myself for another week, starting tomorrow (since I weighed myself today). I'll just keep on keepin on and hope it doesn't last more than a week or 2 lol If it lasted a whole month, I would probably have a bit of a freak out.

yes after surgery ( early weeks) you do have extra acids from the healing, reduced stomach size etc which is why most surgeons put their patients on meds for 6 months post op but if you can manage without them that is best I guess as then you don't have to go through tapering off them etc.
  14. I know this sounds odd. But at 260 I used the handicapped ladies restroom stall. Because I needed more space. Even though I'm very slow at losing weight. 55 pounds since November. But the happy part is comfortable in a regular bathroom stall. I know it doesn't sound like much but for me it is one more step Sent from my SM-A716U using BariatricPal mobile app

    May 2022 surgery?

Oh Happy Day! My program has had me on clear liquids for the first week. Today was my first day of FULL liquids and I feel like a new woman! lol Tomato soup has NEVER tasted so good to me! I got SO sick and tired of the syrupy sweet Protein waters. Yuck!! 16.9 oz for 20 g of protein. I just found these on Amazon. 26 g of protein in only 2.5 oz of liquid. Has anyone tried these? I ordered a case to test out - should have by Sunday. Reviews say its sweet and tart - but at least its only 2.5 oz. That will let me get the rest of my water requirement through WATER or something less disgusting.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Oh well done - that's an amazing loss over 2 weeks. I just came to see how everyone was getting along - we're all at the 6 month stage more or less - can you believe it?! I hit 6 months on Tuesday with a BMI of just under 28, weighing 13st 7lbs, and with 29lbs to go to my goal. I'm still eating around 1000 calories a day during the week and about 1200 at weekends. Walking (really fast walking) for exercise. I'm still losing about 2lbs at week at this point and so happy with that. I'm living in fear of my hunger returning in full force now. My stomach can hold noticeably more food than even a couple of months ago, although I don't push it at all. Still eating 3 small meals a day with a couple of snacks in between, and a couple of glasses of wine on Friday and/or Saturday night. I hope everyone else is doing well too.

    Throat burns post sleeve

It is after I “lye down” for the most part. I think the reason I have noticed it more this week is cause my husband has COVID so I have been watching tv in the bedroom to stay away from him. I have an adjustable bed so I am sorta more upright but not fully. So basically after dinner I have been “lying down” right away for the past several days.

    Throat burns post sleeve

is it after you lay down? My surgeon said no food or drink 3 hours before laying down very hard to do I know. it could be the iced coffee I don't know how long after consuming something that it takes to feel "the burn" in your throat but I know the feeling you are talking about well. it normal takes a few hours before I feel it after eating trigger foods and that was one of the reason I didn't work out what my trigger foods were at the start. The size of your evening meal could also be a cause (to much or to little) Surprisingly my dietician told me not eating enough can also cause reflux which I found to be true early on after surgery and sometimes now if I haven't eaten for awhile I get that niggly burn have something to eat and it settles it I normally have a Gaviscon tablet after I eat if I get to that stage too. like I said before I did find that 20 mg of Nexium a day (morning) is all I need personally I think some DR's over prescribe so just see what works for you.

    Blah...my first stall...

I am sure it wont last much longer than a week or so , you will be fine, don't forget hormones play a big part in weight loss too, Pre-op I always seemed to gain a kilo or 2 before a period then drop it when period had finished and I am noticing something similar post op too but now I am in peri-menopause its a bit harder to gauge. Oh I am a guilty over weigher too most days I weigh in twice a day 😔. although now my weight loss has slowed dramatically I try to only weigh in first thing in the morning.

Have you noticed what foods trigger it, the 3 main triggers are coffee (caffeine), Chocolate, and Carbonated drinks. other people find food like orange juice, tomatoes etc. I find the first 3 I listed are triggers for me especially if I have all 3 on the same day . Mine is controlled with 20mg Nexium daily.
  21. I had my vsg in April 2016, I lost 90lbs in 5 months and found out I was pregnant. 😶 Everything made me sick, but when I started eating terrible food, it made my addiction come right back. 2 years after I had my oldest, I had my youngest. Now she is 3 and I have gained just about all of my weight back and its brought back its problems with it. So now I am starting my journey back. Im more conscious about my eating and exercising, and start my nutrionist appointments in June. I want the revision from sleeve to RNY, but we will see how things progress, my husband isnt on board with me getting another surgery, but I am trying to just get myself together the best I can and work my way until I am able to schedule, then see if I can get his support. Im just nervous about how it will all turn out. I have GERD terrible, and PCOS and my doctor is putting me back on metformin. I wanted to have surgery originally to have kids, but I know if I had another chance at being healthy and getting myself back I'll know how I got myself into this situation again and be able to prepare for it not to happen again. Plus I dont want anymore kids.

    bread

I'm just 5 weeks post-op but some of the women in our own small "self created" support group (we met walking laps after surgery) are already using low carb wraps and tolerating well. I can barely tolerate 3oz of protein with no veggies or carbs once a day. I am supplementing with protein added to everything I drink and shakes. I understand that people are different but can I try either a low carb wrap or one of the low carb breads at this point or should I wait? I do have the diet plan suggested by my program but several are trying new things a littler earlier and doing well.

    Throat burns post sleeve

I am 14 months out. They never had me on anything and I didn’t have any issues early on. It has been going on for a while though. It was just once in a blue moon at first. Now it’s a couple times a week and i realized it is after I eat. I only had heartburn like twice in my life prior to surgery and it was from spicy foods.

    When/How to buy new clothes

I endorse all of these suggestions. I work in a conservative business attire organization. Although the pandemic gave me some leeway in terms of sizing down over time, now that office work and in-person meetings are occurring, I need suitable business clothing (pun intended). ThredUp is part of my arsenal. I’d add to the above the following suggestions: 1. Filter clothing by “excellent condition” or “new with tags” — I’ve found anything graded below that to be rolling the dice. 2. I don’t buy final sale items unless they are dirt cheap (<$5). I haven’t tried ThredUp outlet; maybe that’s an exception. 3. Batch orders so it makes sense to return items. 4. Even though they say they don’t accept clothing past 5 years old … they clearly do carry a number of “vintage” brands, and fit by sizing has changed over time for many brands. 5. Don’t buy designer labels without price-checking against designer resellers (RealReal, etc) — sites that specialize in premium labels have more thorough vetting info available and often better prices. I haven’t invested in designer, but I have tried a few fine-fiber fabrics — cashmere, merino — via ThredUp and again would not suggest doing this unless it’s New with Tags and returnable. 6. The app and the web interface have different functionality. I find searching refinements to be easier to do online. Their e-commerce platform is constantly tweaked, so mileage varies. 7. You will (not) grow to love the frequency of black clothing put on a black mannequin for photographing so that little-to-no details can be discerned. 😂

    Blah...my first stall...

Ah yes, the infamous 3 week stall. I started just thinking of my body 're calibrating' and moving a smidge of fat from here to here, and moving more energy over there. I found that helped a lot with the mental energy worrying about the stall, thinking I had done something wrong, being catastrophic about it etc lol. I am a just over a year out...and I spend most of the month stalled lol then I lose. So I just think of my body needing a minute to figure out what to do next and get organized and it halts ALL PRODUCTION until it sorts itself out again and starts losing. Hope that helps!
