2 years out from RNY and need advice!
tkuch posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello everyone, I am two years out from having my RNY surgery. At first I felt like everything was going great and it really isn't to bad. But in the last couple of weeks I have put on 4 pounds and I am freaking out about it. I feel like I have failed this surgery. I just need some help and encouragement to get me back on track and lose this 4 pounds I put on and 15 more that I wanted to lose after surgery. Any one else put on weight 2 plus years out? And if so where you able to take it back off and how did you do it? Thanks for any help you can give me. Therese -

Hello, I am returning to my roots in hopes of getting back on the band wagon!!! I was banded in 8/09 ..lost 80lbs...got pregnant...GAINED IT BACK......now trying to get back on track in a major way!!!! I just got a fill in my band up to 6.5cc's in a 10 cc band. Looking for my motivation once again.......I need to lose 133 pounds!!!!!!!!!!! Need help with meal plans.....ideas....anyone??? -
Congrats on your band first of all, however while I know that you are pumped up about doing exercise you are still in post op mode. If you want to do arm curls and stuff you need to check with your physician. Here is the main reason they want you to take it easy, any form of exercise that you do with your legs core or arms has an affect on your port, which could flip. or the cord that is attached from the port to the band which can become detached. Keep up the walking but remember you are healing and in this process you will gain some weight and that is expected this is the time you need to pamper yourself take your time, soon enough you will be able to do core, legs and arms. But as always double check with your Doctor~

Don't let it put you off! I read that stalling is something that needs to happen in order for one to lose weight! Hope all goes well sanaa♑️

My Dr referred me for nutrition classes in March 2013 that started May 1, 2013. The classes lasted 12 weeks. I lost the required weight and had the surgery on September 23, 2013.

I do suffer from constipation but i have it under control. Don't have anything else or taking any medication that will trigger holding of water weight. I have a nutritionist that i follow up with. don't know if i should pay her a visit. I'm scheduled to see my surgeon in 2 weeks if by then this does not get better i will for sure address it with him.

Wow, what amazing progress! Congrats! I can't even remember the last time my weight started with a "1", but now I feel it is actually within sight and I'm hoping to hit it before my birthday at the end of August.

My surgeon never said that. I am to eat, protein, then fruits and veg, then carbs. Absolutely no calories from liquids. The reason for eating carbs last is that that you will already be filling up and won't have much room left. I have eaten absolutely everything I have wanted after 7 weeks post op. I reached my goal weight at 16 1/2 months.

I also had band removal and sleeve. I suffered with acid reflux at first. It has gradually gotten better. I feel like I wasted 6 yrs w band. It was so miserable. I am so nervous about not loosing the weight with this!

Walking enough and how much???
trishfish replied to kab1278's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
adding weigts to your weekly workout routine will help tons. not in just the losing (more lean muscle helps with your metabolism overall) but it will help your toning. saggy skin is a side affect of major weight loss, so toned muscles help the skin not look so saggy. I do cardio 6 days a week and some sort of weight training 4 days a week. I just started the p90x and love it! -
So I went on vacation to Europe for a month. I know, you don't feel sorry for me! There was a lot of sausage, bread, and beer to be had! I did not have any problems with getting stuck...at first. Two weeks into my trip, I fell off a horse. OW ow ow ow ow! I did a few things wrong after that: 1) I took Aleve because I knew I was going to hurt like hell later, and 2) Later, my hosts forced me to drink the Polish medicine, which is normally vodka but they thought I needed something stronger so it was cognac, and 3) I proceeded to eat a normal sausage-y dinner. It was not long before I was stuck and sliming. I've never been stuck before, only had an uncomfortable feeling when I eat too fast or too big a bite. The sliming eventually led to vomiting, and there were streaks of blood in it. Oh how scared I was! I was in a foreign country, vomiting blood, and I just knew that if I went to the hospital, they wouldn't know what to do with me. So I only told my husband, who was freaked out but agreed to stay quiet and keep an eye on me. I sipped Water for the rest of the evening, then just ate soft stuff for 24 hours. I felt fine the next day...well, my stomach felt fine. My body was extremely sore! I had to be more careful with food after that, I seemed to feel tight/stuck more easily. I visited my bariatric doctor when I got home, who checked my band with the x-ray and everything looked great. I ate basically whatever I wanted for a month and gained a pound. Not bad! We walked a LOT, and I was not the person everyone else had to wait for, as in past trips. 7 months of exercise allowed me to be the person in front for a change! So other than the horse fiasco, I had a really great experience.

Yup, agree with you. Bariatric Advantage or Celebrate are two good companies to start out with for supplementation needs (Vitamins and minerals). I have no problem with that, but would suggest nectar or unjury as great Protein shakes for a newly sleeved individual. They are both solid brands and work well. In fact, my WLS center also recommends Bariactric Advantage for supplementation and Syntrax Nectar for protein shakes. That being said, I am 1 year post op so am a mature post op and somewhat new vet. I have been around the block a few times in my journey so far and have learned much and have much to share around shakes and supplementation and their impact on weight loss and fitness. I hope you do not read my post as anti-doctor or anti dietician. Quite the opposite in fact. In the first six months, it is critical to follow doctor orders to a "T" both dr and dietician know how to make their patients successful. Of course you are aware every doctor and dietician can potentially give different plans to their patients that may not be consistent with other patient doctor and dietician plans. After 6 months ( or when you feel is a good time), you can start to form your own strategies in terms of diet and fitness. The level of tweaking that you do is highly individual. The shake mentioned in this thread from GNC is just another tweak to the lifetime eating plan. Re-feed may not be an ideal shake for me, but I wanted to give it a try for reasons mentioned above in this thread. I also take cake batter muscle milk light and GNC Wheybolic or Isopure vanilla bean for recovery shake. I am so much a shake person at 3 a day. I eat small protein based meals for the other 4 meals. By small, I mean 3 oz lean protein and perhaps a veggie.

Working Out And Increasing Calories ?!?
kimmy*custis replied to krissy20's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would say yes, increase the calories. I use Myfitnesspal and when I put in my exercise it ups my calorie intake for the day in the calculation. Give it a try, I bet it kicks the weight loss into gear again,. especially with the exercising. Good luck! -
My situation might be more detailed and spinal related as I have already had two major back surgeries in Feb. 2016 due to sciatica and nerve compression at the L5-S1 level. I under went the second surgery about 48 hours after the first due to my spinal cord collapsing onto the right side causing further damage to the nerves and needing a lamenectomy in the vertebra above and below the original location. All that being said I now have permanent numbness in my right foot and calf. Still experience shooting pains from time to time in the buttocks with no relief. I again have been referred to a new neurologist to see if there are other options. After dealing with my symptoms and pain for nearly 6 years, going to chiropractors, orthopedics, having steroid injections and intradermal injections I still am not 100%. I am hoping with weight loss after being sleeved I may find relief. If you have to seek further treatment make sure you have a neurologist operate, not ortho!

I got the gastic sleeve done on 6/28/2016. Some days are hard and a learning experience. My start weight was 276. Before surgery was 250. Right now is 222. I walk everyday but I need to do more of a workout. For some reason I am scared to workout. I know it will be alot easier but don't want to hurt myself. As far as eating. It am a bit over a month out. I am eating some solid foods. I still drink my Protein shake for Breakfast. I find it hard to eat right away, around 10am is where I can eat a fruit or Jello. For lunch and supper I eat every small portion of what I make for my family. I have learned to use the app the fitness pal. I love it. I am up to 600 calories. Everyday is a challenge. I think I can eat more and I am reminded to eat slow and not much. It is all a learning process. Sent from my SM-G920R4 using the BariatricPal App

protein shakes.....rule of thumb
Lee replied to johan22's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Every program is different. My doctor doesn't want me drinking protein shakes, either before or after surgery. I have to admit that I've been having some to help me get to my pre-surgery goal weight. -
Oh, the good ol' days when the decision about what a patient needs, or should have, rested solely with the doctor and the patient. Seems wrong to be denied weight loss surgery because you gained weight! That's the whole point of WLS.

July 2010 Bandsters... Where are you guys??? LOL
dlynn1635 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My name is Demetra and I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I was banded on July 14, 2010 and have lost 86 lbs so far... I still have another 25 to go according to my doc. Weight loss is at a stand still right now. No weight loss prior to surgery so my starting weight was 273 and am currently at 187 give or take a few pounds day to day. Was wearing a 20/22 to start and am down to about a 10/12... Very happy with my progress. So I would love to hear from others that had surgery around that time! -
Hello Kim, Welcome! Great weight loss! Congrats Kim

I'm 4 months out, but have been stalled since 3 months. So basically over a month sitting at the same weight. It is really quite frustrating, and honestly depressing. I know stalls are normal but this is like the stall from hell and so early out.

First night home after surgery. Gas pain sucks and can't get comfortable. No pain no gain or should I say no pain no loss. Lol. Have a great weekend everyone.

I'm just venting here. I had VSG on 11/12/12. Did really well the first 6 weeks. Once I went back to work in January, it's like the genie said "Poof! No more weight loss for you!" I have struggled and struggled. I am at my breaking point now. I have even avoided the message boards here for weeks because I get even more depressed reading about everyone's success. Nothing I try seems to work for me anymore. I am exercising like I should. I am eating what I should, and avoiding what I shouldn't be eating. No matter what I do, I can't seem to get beyond that one hash mark on the scale. I have an appointment with the surgeon next week and I really don't want to go to it. I feel like a complete failure when it comes to this surgery. I have lost 42 lbs. so far, but that was all before January. Since then - nothing! Granted, I haven't gained any either, but I still feel like a complete failure. I was religiously logging my food on MFP, but found that if I did that, all I did was make myself feel hungry and deprived so I had to let up on being so obsessive about that. Now, I just don't know what to do. I am about ready to resign myself to the fact that I am just going to be this way the rest of my life.

I'm going through the same thing!!! I have been at the same weight for over a month now!!!! I don't get it! And I'm working out more. I feel helpless and I feel like a loser. Please report back what your dr recommends. Good luck!

caved...ate reg. food during liquid stage!
misltoe posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Aaahhhh! I caved! I ate whold food a week after surgery! Not to sound melodramatic...but I feel like a failure. I am so frustrated with my choices. I finally have a good chance to loose weight and I feel I am that I am sabotaging it. Anyone else cave in to the call of "real" food during your post op eating schedule? I had lots of restriction until a week after surgery. Then it went away over a couple days. Now I have very little. Do you think the swelling went down, or did I cause the band to slip? Do you think I hurt my band...cause my stomach to stretch? 11 days since surgery...3 days until mushies... -
Congrats! You are beautiful - but you will be healthy AND beautiful after getting some excess weight off!
