    B-12

I was taking the sub-lingual but quickly outpaced it. There is a concern with getting this from foods and the myth that vegan/vegetarians aren't able to absorb enough from foods, but my level tripled while taking the supplement. I haven't needed it since 6mths post-op.
  2. I'm nearly a year post-op and I have found my tastes getting pickier and picker each month. I have NEVER been a picky eater...heck, I have eaten things some people might turn their nose up to. But now it seems if something doesn't taste great then I don't eat it. Unfortunately I've developed somewhat of an aversion to certain meats, mostly ground turkey, some fish and some chicken depending on how it is prepared. It's especially bad if I cook the meal myself because I smell the raw meat and it completely takes my appetite away. The only meats that don't completely gross me out to cook with are pork and beef. In fact I made a huge pot of my ground turkey chili for dinner tonight and I had to take it outside because the smell was making my stomach turn. Not eating ground turkey anymore... Now don't get me wrong. Although I have many friends who are vegetarian I am not looking to become one. I still love most meat, especially if I don't cook it myself. Yesterday I had some raw tuna wrapped in cucumber along with chicken and shrimp cooked on a hibachi grill. Yum! My diet could be considered mostly Paleo. But I've never really had this issue before and was curious if anyone else has?
  3. Thank you. I am 5"5 Start weight 255lbs 35 years old/ female I am currently eating eggs, vegetarian protein sausages, soups; home made chicken soups with chicken and vegetables, diluted juices; Apple juices and pineapple . I can't swallow chicken, as it feels bad going down but I chew it and swallow the juices and spit the rest out. ( excuse the grim details) Happy for any suggestions. Thanks. Exercise, I am walking only at the moment.
  4. I'm vegetarian not vegan. It's not really hard. I eat a lot of greek yogurt, cheese, nuts, beans and dark green leafy veg. I also supplement with unflavored whey isolate.
  5. Speaking from past experience, I never felt unwelcome on this site. I am a bit against the grain since I am a vegetarian with many food and medication allergies. I try to eat as clean as possible. I am very much against GMO's and processed foods. I use this forum as an informational tool, but I also do my own homework regarding my healthcare. If someone disagrees with me, that fine. I know what things work for me and my body.
  6. .Hi Feedyoureye, can I ask what your stats are? And if you don't mind, you're age? Just curious. I love how involved you are on the sight after five years and still doing so well. Sometimes when the newness wears off so does the enthusiasm. I'm 53 and I just never want to go back to where I was. I'm pretty sure I won't but this just reaffirms this is a lifetime journey SW 260 lowest weight after surgery, 170 (took me 3 years to get there) stated goal 170-173 bad year where my mom died, my little dog died and developed bone spurs in my right knee.... current weight 195 still working on it... would love to get the weight down a bit again... I am a vegetarian, I am currently 62 years old, 5'9", large boned. I take a bellydance class twice a week, walk twice a week, and kayak or hike or something once a week. I do not do very low carbs, never did.... I do take my Vitamins, don't always drink enough Water but keep trying to, when I use fit bit and myfitnesspal I am more successfull than if I do not. I do a partial fast twice a week (the 5:2) I still want to answer the call to adventure and I'm going to try and get my motorcycle license next week. You can never fully forget that you need to keep on track. Its boring, disappointing and unpredictable.... I fall off the wagon weeks at a time, but I really try not to forget... and get back on track. I don't want to make change that I can't keep doing... that leads to yoyo. so, no fad diets. No cutting out things I like completely. I try to eat more veggies all the time, find things I really like that make me feel good and are really healthy choices. I try and drown out the crap eating with lots of good eating. This forum is my society. When I leave it, I start to forget where I am.

    Nutrition requirements

I only had one 2 or 3 hour nutrition class to take. They discussed portion sizes, the importance of drinking water/fluids, to get isolates, not concentrates and recommendations on things like getting smaller utensils and plates. However I met with the nutritionist at every pre-op appointment (3 in total) and I continue to meet with her at every post-op appointment. She always reviews my food log and offers feedback. Pre-op the recommendations I was given were regarding finding a Protein drink that met my dietary challenges (Vegetarian and severe food allergies), to keep my calories under 1200 and increase my protein intake. Post-op the discussion surrounded how many calories I should be eating at various stages as spelled out in my program guidebook. Carbs were never discussed and the only mention of sugars was to keep them low.

    Lettuce anyone?

I was adding raw spinach to my protein drink from week 1 Granted pureed in the nutra bullet takes a lot of the hard work off my tummy. I was making smallish salads on weeks 3 - 4 with no issues, mostly romaine or spinach leaves. My NUT had no issues with it and it didn't upset my tummy in the least. Mind you I'm vegetarian so my body may be more accustomed to raw veg than most. I never eat iceburg lettuce, it is a nutritional waste of space. I go for vitamin rich dark green leafy veg.

The STRICT ones in first year......

There is a site called bariatricfoodie.com or also there's a free bariatric cookbook from Georgetown... You can just search it and it should come up. I use a lot of vegetarian recipes and then add in tofu or veggie crumble. I'm a big van of spaghetti squash... And I also I do each some legumes... Occasionally chick peas or whatnot.

    High Protein Pasta

I'm curious too, actually! And I agree with @@OutsideMatchInside, have you tried zucchini noodles first for.your Pasta fix? They are really good! I just looked that pasta up. It's made with vegetarian ingredients (besides egg whites). The stats aren't bad at all, actually. Now if it doesn't taste like cardboard, they may be a winner! Otherwise I'll stick to my zucchini pasta!

    Confused!

Programs are different. I didn't have a pre-op diet other than the typical NPO 12/24 hours prior to surgery. It was recommended to increase protein and veg. So do not worry if you don't have a pre-op diet. Some of us don't. It's also not uncommon for programs to recommend transitioning to real food as soon as possible. A year out I still start most days with a Protein Shake, but this was my habit pre-op. I make my own concoctions in the nutra bullet before I go to the gym. When I do supplement it's with Isopure unflavored powder. I'm vegetarian so most of my protein is from eggs, Beans and yogurt. Shakes are a personal preference and taste. You have to consider whether you want powder or RTD, milk based or clear drinks. The major ones are Premier Protein, Isopure, Syntrac nectar and unjury.
  12. View this time as retraining for your new normal. The desire to chew is natural, but I also used it as an opportunity to reevaluate what I eat. I'm the odd ball because I am a vegetarian. I was adding spinach to my Protein drinks. Once I was off soft foods at 6 weeks, I started adding in my raw veg and greens with no issues. BTW @ try other lettuce like butter lettuce, arugula or even cabbages. Kale is also a little easier to eat if you blanche it. Just hang in there, soon this time will be nothing more than a distance memory. I do however, vividly recall wanting to throw those Protein Drinks out the window!

    Stool softener

Pre-op I was always regular. I would go at least 2 - 3 times a day. The first month post-op they weren't as "robust" as they were pre-op but Once I went on day 5 I had 1 BM a day. Once I transitioned to soft foods, I was going ~ 2 times a day. A year out I'm back to normal. I am a vegetarian and eat as clean as possible. The lack of processed foods means it take my body less time to break down food, so depending on what I eat I go 1 -3 every day.
  14. I am not a vegetarian, but I do juice once or twice a week. However, I didn't juice during the majority of my weight loss phase. I am in maintenance now and just make sure when I juice I log my calories and so far I have been fine. I even do the occasionally fruit juice. I always save my pulp and add it to my homemade soups and if I do fruit I use the pulp and add it to homemade whole grain muffins (mostly my family eats those). I haven't had any problems. I think if I juiced everyday it would be too many carbs for me and I would rather eat my food. LOL Good luck.
  15. I'm vegetarian. I get in 100gm of Protein daily, but I supplement with 100% unflavored whey isolate. Juicing isn't a good idea because it's all concentrated sugar with none of the benefits of the Fiber and roughage you would get from eating the fruit or veg whole. Even vegetables will contain sugars. You'd benefit more from eating a balanced diet and the occasional salad.
  16. Wow, you are definitely in a difficult situation, especially when you are 3 months post-op. In your situation, the first thing I would suggest is talk to your NUT. This seems definitely like a complex situation where you need serious dietitian help. With not being able to eat meat or Protein shakes (or Protein powder I assume), it would seem you will have to get all your protein from plant sources, such as tofu, edemame, Beans, chickpeas (even as a paste dip [hummus] with something like sliced cucumbers), quinoa, hemp seeds, seitan, etc. Just like a vegetarian. Google for vegetarian protein and see what you come up with. Quinoa is a great substitute for rice, and I love edemame (you can get it steamed or even baked for a crunchy taste). Chickpeas can be either eaten plain, baked for a crunchy treat, or pureed into hummus. However, note that you will have to consume quite a bit of these foods to get in your recommended daily protein allowance. Unfortunately, meat sources are the best high-density protein sources out there. Can you eat fish? That may also be an option for higher protein. Try cod, tuna, haddock, and halibut, which are high-protein. Careful of any breading, which will add carbs and maybe fat to them. In order to ensure you get in your required protein, as we were taught from the beginning, start every meal with your protein first. If you have room after the protein, then other fruits/veg (such as broccoli, squash, bell peppers, bannanas, berries, etc.). If you still have room after that, then the other carbs (potatoes, corn, whole-grain bread, whole-grain crackers, etc.). It is really important to get in your daily protein when eating these low-density-protein sources, so eat that first. Also, ensure you are taking your Vitamins. With eating so little, you cannot get your necessary vitamins from food, so you need to take your supplements. As far as Fluid intake, I don't know what to say. Can you tolerate straight Water? If so, sipping that all day may be the only option. If you can handle flavored water, of course Crystal Light or something similar (I'm sure you've tried that).
  17. This is something you need to discuss with your nutritionist. My sister is vegetarian, and she had bypass about 15 years ago. She still has trouble getting in enough Protein, and her hair is still very thin and unhealthy looking (she is a hairdresser, so I figure if she can't make her own hair look good, it must be really bad). I believe that the reason juicing isn't a good idea is not the size of your stomach, but because it is very easy to drink too many calories.

How was your 5:2 day today?

Sheryl, I am not a vegetarian. I never have been one. My friend practically had to force me to go to this discussion on plant based eating. They said there that many illnesses will go away with this type of eating. I know I could never eat this way. I love dairy way too much. Sheryl, did you say that show In Treatment was on Netflix? I can't find it. Netflix says it's unavailable. I am disappointed. Did you watch it on Amazon? I'm trying to eat better and cut out the cr@p. I can't stand the way my clothes fit. Kellly, I'm sorry to hear about your knee. Just think though, it will heal and you will be so much better off. That's my hope for my back.
  19. When my husband had his RNYGB, he was advised to drink nothing but Protein shakes two weeks before surgery, and Clear liquids two days before. When I did the nutrition consult for a gastric sleeve, I was told "Follow South Beach" minus the carbs. Now, my surgeon for my RNYGB said "Vegetarian diet, with Protein Shakes." I understand liver shrinking--I just don't get all the different ways folks are doing it. Is this something that is actually standardized, or is a matter of personal preference on the part of the surgeon?

How was your 5:2 day today?

@@Oregondaisy Let me get this straight..You are vegetarian but don't like vegetables? I can only take so much raw and plain. My favorite ways to eat veggies are part of a salad and roasted. Roasted vegetables are out of this world. You might try some different things like that. 162.2 this morning. My"goal" for the week was to be down to 162, so I will take it! I am losing a slow 1# a week but I am really noticing the difference. My clothes fit better and I am getting hit on several times a week. I am in a non dating mood BUT I am always trying to figure out what weight suits me best so I consider that a certain type of feedback. (Never seems to be from guys I would even consider though.) i have such damn skinny friends (like 5'7" and 115#) that I always seem huge by comparison. Anyway I am aiming to get back to 150# which gives me some bounce room to stay under my 158# goal. Remodel is progressing...new floors this week.

How much is everyone able to eat now? I had a followup yesterday and I didn't think I was eating enough. He said I am fine. I eat three meals a day and one isopure. My meals are just a quarter of a cup. So I don't get much protein from those. I don't tolerate meat very well. I'm close to being a vegetarian. Doctor says that's healthy for me.
  22. What others have you had? I keep buying random samples at GNC, but haven't found one I love other than the Quest Banana Cream. Others I just kind of tolerate, like the Premiere Protein. Whoops, you're right ... GNC does make a Banana Cream Lean Shake 25. Forgot about that one. It's OK, not wonderful ... again, for me. I've also tried unjury powders -- and didn't like any of those except the chicken flavored one. I used that in the early days when I was drinking a lot of chicken broth. And believe me ... after that phase you could go a long time without drinking chicken broth by itself. I also tried some vegetarian protein powders, but cannot remember the names of any -- and they all sucked. Although I've not tried Chike coffee flavored Protein drinks, I've heard from multiple sources online that they're great. http://www.amazon.com/Chike-Coffee-Protein-Drink-Packets/product-reviews/B008O6J8QO

How Much Do/Did You Know About Nutrition?

I knew quite a lot. I've been vegetarian for nearly 20 years. Serious about it for the past 7 (as in not just eating a bunch of pasta and veg.) I had changed my eating about 3 years prior to considering WLS. My allergies had gotten to the point where I was always sick and I tend to be the small percentage that reacts negatively to too many meds. I was practicing clean eating, had stopped drinking soda and was food logging before I thought about surgery. In fact it was one of the things that helped me decide. I felt that if I was eating properly and exercising, the extra help from surgery might make my weight loss successful.

Approved - but Should I Go through with it?

@@wwboy As far as people being miserable post surgery, most of them were miserable before surgery. They thought the weight was their problem, not other things. Bad life choices, traumatic childhood, bad life partners, lack of assertiveness, social anxiety, etc. Losing weight won't fix that and when people lose the weight and they are emotionally in the same place or worse, it really goes down hill. I know a lot of people that had surgery and are still miserable but they are just miserable people, fat or skinny. If you love yourself and you are happy with yourself, but you need to lose some excess weight to make life easier then do it. Most vegetarians and vegans I know are fat. They are sugar addicts and they pile on a lot of crap. It is really easy to be over weight on a plant based diet. You can just binge on fruit and you will be just as fat as if you are were eat double cheese burgers. If moderation is your issue, then surgery will help you with the moderation. The ability to eat very little and feel satisfied and full is a feel of euphoria that is hard to describe. You can have the sleeve and still have a plant based diet, people here do it, it is done. Your counselor doesn't have to live in your skin, and deal with you life. So keep that in mind when taking advice from her or anyone else (including me) you have to live with you.
  25. You might be an over-thinker like I am. I had all the same concerns. Bottom line is that you may not be around in 10-20 years to even worry about the long term effects if you remain obese. I made the decision to just do it! Put all doubts aside and just went with the flow. There are a lot of steps to the process and I just took them one step at a time and didn't dwell on what the 3 steps ahead were. I would schedule the surgery and try the vegetarian diet between now and then. If you make it through Thanksgiving without cheating and you are loosing weight then just cancel or postpone the surgery. Good luck!
