manitobamama replied to Ninni's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah chewing my meds in order to swallow them was more than disgusting but had to do what I needed to take them when dissolving them wasn't an option. Look for an app called the bariatric pyramid. It shows you what you should have on hand. Hope this helps Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
Tummy Problems With Protein Shakes- On Pre-Op Diet
Greekie17 replied to Greekie17's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I am using the ones that the surgeon's office makes us use, called Suncoast Bariatrics. They are made of whey protein, 22 grams per shake, and 111 calories. You mix them with water pre-op. After the operation, you can mix them with skim or low fat milk. I will call them on Monday to see what they recommend. -
To sleeve or Not to sleeve. That is the question.
MinnesotaDreaming52 replied to MinnesotaDreaming52's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am going to Fairview Southdale Hospital. I need to complete 3mo of visits. and lose 5lbs. Also there is another issue, I have a H.hernia and they said it is no big deal the surgeon can address this at a later appt. The problem is it is a huge area. I have talked with a surgeon before and I shared this with the PA. I was told by then surgeon this was not an easy fix that I needed to lose 30lbs before they could do surgery. This is why I am confused, it is like they discarded what I said, my records are all in the system form the U of M . The PA said well if you want to speak to a surgeon you will need to contact one of them and make an appt. this will be outside of your care with the Bariatric center even though these are the surgeons that will perform the surgery. I am wondering do they talk to each other or are they independent of each other. This visit may not be a covered benefit. I should call my insurance to make sure. I would think something like this should require a surgeon attention and then we make plans as to which way to proceed. 5lbs vs 30lbs who is right? I don't want them decide while I'm on the table that I haven't lost enough weight. It sounds like I should look around. -
Able to Eat Almost Anything
Djmohr replied to Kathy L's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too have never had dumping and can literally eat anything I want. At first my bariatric team though I had not pushed the boundaries yet but I can assure you I have and although some things like ice cream make my yummy feel heavy and uncomfortable, I don't get sick. Here is the thing, your new stomach controls how much you can fit into it. You control what and how often you put something into it. This is why building good eating habits is critical to your success. Just because I can eat anything I want, does not mean that should. This is simply a tool to help you manage your hunger. You have to get to the point where you truly recognize real hunger and a whole new feeling of full. Full now does not mean stuffed to the point where you are uncomfortable. I used to do that all the time. Full now means satisfied and comfortable. This is exactly why having this surgery is very hard work. You have to manage your food, Water and activity every single minute of the day. If you do that, the rewards are incredible. Better health, massive weight loss and more energy than you can imagine. I consider myself very lucky to be able to eat what I want without getting sick. Good luck to you guys! -
Have any of you gotten your surgery done at NMCSD? If so can you tell me what are the requirements. I'm enrolled in the class, and have an appointment for the introduction class for bariatric surgery and have been seeing a nutrionist at NMCSD for 3 months. I want to make sure I am prepared. Thank you!

Today my mom and I went on a small day trip to a nearby city. It was fun. I had my official last meal. We went to Texas steakhouse. In the morning I will start my liquid diet. My doctor only asks that we go on a liquid diet 2-3 days before the surgery. However, after hearing that everyone else is going on a liquid diet sometimes several weeks in advance, I have become a little nervous. My surgery will be Monday August the 1st. I am excited and nervous and scared all at once. I am missing my ex-boyfriend even more these days. He had promised to be with me during my surgery and take care of me. I really wanted him to be there for me. …Giant piece of crap. Anyhow, my mom gave me this great bariatric surgery recipe pamphlet. It has several different kinds of protein shakes that can be made with chocolate and vanilla protein powder. I am pretty excited about that. She also gave me several diet and exercise books to read during my recovery. She bought me a big green exercise ball. Mom has been very supportive these days. My step dad isn’t too thrilled about the idea. After reading about it mom was considering VSG herself. She is 260 and diabetic. My step dad now has her convinced that she is too old. She plans to be with me while I am in the hospital for three days. She will drive me the two hours back home. I am thankful for her help. I am hoping my step dad might reconsider once he sees how awesome I do. (also hoping that I do actually DO AWESOME). I worry about my mom. A quiet stillness has settled in over me. I have to work 2 days this coming week- then I will be off Wed to attend the Dietitians education class and register at the hospital. Thursday I took off to finish up some of the little things I have left to do before surgery…and Friday is my preop appointment. This time next week- I will be packed and waiting to leave for my surgery. I cannot wait until this is over. I am hoping that once I have had the surgery I will be so focused on what I need to do- that I won’t miss my ex so much.

This is my first time posting but I have been lurking for a while. I also have Aetna and did my program thru Dr. Pennington at Advanced Bariatrics in Mountain Brook, AL. They have a psychologist/fitness instructor/nutritionist on site and I seen them for 3 months, as required by Aetna. My last appt was July 15, my paperwork was submitted July 25 and I was approved last friday, August 5. The fitness lady I seen just showed me different ways to do exercise, mainly after surgery. she also measured me for my file.

Did anyone else have to submit a application at the seminar?
NewAshes posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
They gave me two packets to fill and one was for the bariatric team to approve or deny me the other was to take to my first appointment if approved. I'm assuming its for them to see if my insurance even covers my surgery if I fell into all the requirement cause it asked for my insurance information and what kind of health issues I have. If anyone else or everyone else had to do this how long does it usually take for them to get back to you? On the paper it said applications are done in order of received and I filled mine out at the seminar but just curious. -

I am a week and a half post op, and experiencing my first cravings: tomatoes, cucumbers, and carrots. To drink? Ice-cold fresh Water. I am, of course, still in liquids, but added yogurt this week. I really enjoy the Bariatric Pal Cream of chicken Soup as well. I never craved fresh vegetables before, so I could get used to craving something healthy!! I hope it's still what I crave layer when they are something I can eat.. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using the BariatricPal App

More support can't hurt!
elli'smommy replied to elli'smommy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Truly, not very long. But, I have a lap-band that was ruptured during a fill. So after a failed four year stent w the band I seen a new Bariatric doc and discussed removing the band. He suggested rny. That was in December. I drug my feet for a while and did some research and soul searching. Then seen the doc again in Late march. Paperwork was submitted in April and approved a week later. I had to attend a revision class. A week later after that I had my may 10 & 14 appts. If all goes well, ill have a surgery date by the end of may or early June. So I started attending the support groups last night. I'm seeing the dietician next week as well. Moving right along! -

I go to the one at Methodist Hospital off of Beckley and Colorado Ave. They have one every 3rd Tuesday of the Month from 6p-7:30pm in the Weiss Auditorium. Great place to ask questions of people who have had surgery as well as bariatric nurses that attend. Anyone who has had surgery or is going to and their families are welcome to attend and it's free. -
Hi, I have a Band that I've had for 7 years. Time went by and I slowly stopped changing my eating habits and I gained weight. Pretty stable for most of the time, but recently I've gained a LOT of weight. I'm strongly focused on my food addiction. You know, "I HAVE to have this or that so I don't go crazy.!" behaviours. .And I'm doing surprisingly well. I have a LCSW-R that I work with, she's a huge help. Anyway, I "think" my pouch has shrunk because I find I cannot eatan average person's full meal, like I used to. I'm losing weight, and respecting the Band again. I'm changing Surgeons, and will be discussing with him about having the RNY. I've been a member of Bariatric Pal for a few years, and have been studying, learning and changing due to all the great people on here. I bought Alex's book on RNY, it's fascinating! I read that some people , when they have the RNY, they revision to the band as well as contnuing with their RNY life. Has anybody ever heard of this in face to face world? I mean, I'll ask my future surgeon, but I was just seeking some info here, from you guys. It kind of makes sense to me, but I've never heard of it. I was looking into having the band removed and having the RNY. But now I hear of this. What do YOU think?

Hi Cyndy, I used Dr Hadar Spivak, but my closest friend used Dr Wilson and LOVES him! She says he's super nice and the staff is great too. She goes every 6 weeks for fill/adjustment, I think perhaps it's played a large role in her success (she's lost 90 lbs since Nov 2005)... that and working out at Curves M-F. I'm attending the support group meeting tomorrow night at Memorial Hermann too! I think the seminar starts at 6:00, the "Bariatric Buddies" support group begins at 6:30 PM and it's for anyone interested who's had or considering bariatric surgery... there's always a mixture of band and bypass patients. I enjoy connecting with others and not feeling so alone. Last month a few people from the seminar same to sit in for a while. And, some of the people who've already had the surgery will go out to chat with seminar visitors. All the best, Karla

Yea, Center of Excellence. Have it at a hospital not a surgery center. Ultimately, I'd just make sure you feel comfortable with your surgeon. It's a fairly simple procedure.. You want bariatric surgery to be their main practice. So they know what to expect, how to do fills properly, they know about nutriton etc...

Take a very deep breath and decide if you are truly ready for this to happen. If you are, none of the other stuff should matter at all. Take things one step, one day at a time and that is how it all becomes less overwhelming. This includes the 3 week diet. It really is not that bad and will kick start your weight loss, ensure you have a healthier liver and make things safer. I can tell you that every bit of this is worth it in the end. I am 14 months post op, down 135lbs and 10 lbs from my goal. I thank god everyday for putting the Bariatric community on this earth to help us get healthy. When you feel the stress practice breathing very deep, it can be calming. Good luck to you!

Aetna Open Access Plus Plan...Anyone??
MacMadame replied to lilbit08's topic in Insurance & Financing
Aetna's bariatric policy is on their web site so you can look up the details. They do pay for lap band if your BMI is over 40 and you go through a 3 or 6 month program. However, your company has to include WLS in their coverage. If your company excludes it, then you are hosed. -
Here is another company with the type of insurance policy I'm referring to and there are several other companies that offer this coverage. What put me onto this is that Dr. Kelley who is a bariatric surgeon in Tijuana does VSG surgery sometimes at Hospital Angeles and other places in the TJ area offers Medical Tourism insurance as part of his package for an extra 250 dollars. It seems to me that it would be money well spent to have this coverage in case I get back to the u.s. and develop vsg related complications. I have a feeling my primary and secondary health insurance companies in the u.s currectly covering me would give me a hard time about paying for any complications related to an elective vsg. i would have better piece of mind having surgery in tijuana if I had a policy like this to cover large unforseen medical bills due to vsg complications when i get back to the u.s. https://www2.sevencorners.com/medical-tourism-insurance/ MEDICAL TOURISM INSURANCE Why Buy Medical Tourism Insurance? Whatever the reason you decide to pursue Medical Tourism, complications are always a possibility. what caused me to look into this elective insurance option is I noticed that Dr. Kelley in Tijuana offers the cover for $250 but I later found out it only covers complications during surgery or while you are recovering in Mexico. It does not cover complications when you return to the U.S. I'm signed up with Corvala at Hospital Angeles. They said that they have looked hard for insurance to cover post op complications but haven't been able to identify any policies that would make sense for patients. That caused me to look at my own health insurance policy fine print. I am fortunate to be covered by two health plans but neither covers bariatric surgery. The first plan is silent as to whether it would cover post bariatric surgery complications. The second plan does cover post surgery complications for elective surgery but I had to dig through the fine print to find it and the insurance company rep I spoke to orignally gave me the wrong answer over the phone and I had to correct her leading to her eventually agreeing with me. If you are going to have elective bariatric surgery and are under a health plan you may want to check to see if your plan will cover post op complications(i.e. leaks or strictures) from elective surgery. If it doesn't cover post op complications and you are one of the unlucky ones that develops complications it could obviously lead to very large out of pocket medica bills.

1st surgical consultation complete!
hopeliveshere posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello friends, Well i had my first meeting with the surgeon this passed thursday and everything went well. He made me feel at ease as did the coordinator of the bariatric dept. (she almost made me cry when she told me ill never be in this spot again ---totally normal to get emotional right?). The surgeon answered all the questions i had. I keep thinking that its going to be so long to have this 6months to wait ( i have to weigh in with my PCP for 6 consecutive months) but i think now its going to go really fast. I have so much to do. i want to try to get all my testing and evaluations done before i go back for my 2nd cosultation in 3 months which will be in aug. Come august ill be on my 5th of 6 weigh ins. I have to have blood work, see a pulmonologist, cardiologist, gastroenterologist, nutritionist, psych evaluation etc etc. I think im putting off the gastro til last. im s**t scared of getting an endoscopy. The surgeon wants me to avoid or limit my intake of cake bread rice and Pasta. so right now i practicing eating on smaller dinner plates and trying to strecth my meals out. Hope everyone is doing well! -
Sleeve surgery to help Ulcerative Colitis
peewee23.cc posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey all! I'm scheduled for my sleeve Sept 18th. I'm self pay because my weight is just under the bmi. I'm having the surgery done in hopes it will help with my colitis. As I have gotten older and had another child I'm having a hard time keeping my UC under control. The steroids keep packing the pounds on. Is there anyone else that is having this surgery for things other than weight loss? I know there are many health benefits for for this and the other bariatric surgeries. -
New here! Pre and post without Aspartame?
hats123 replied to hats123's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just popping in, a few days post-op, to thank you all for the recommendations. I love that lemonade flavor nectar, and I have samples of many flavors of Bariatric Advantage, fusion, and others. In case anyone new stumbles on this thread: on Amazon I found little bottles of "stur" Water Enhancer...sort of a less powerful crystal light in several fruit flavors, all sweetened with Stevia, not sucralose or aspartame. And GNC sells a store-brand shake mix called something like "lean Protein meal" (that isn't exactly it, but close) that comes in a few different types -- regular (sucralose); vegan (don't know how that's sweetened) and "natural", which is sweetened with stevia. They're not bad at all! Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
New here! Pre and post without Aspartame?
theantichick replied to hats123's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I ordered sampler/variety packs from everyone... Bariatric Pal, Bariatric fusion, Syntrax, unjury, GoTein all had variety packs or samplers available (GoTein actually sent their three flavors for free). I went to Vitamin Shoppe and picked up several flavors of IsoPure to try. So far, I'm working my way through all of the samplers and rating the brands/flavors so I can figure out what to buy. However, I've read a lot of warnings that our tastes change after surgery, so I'm not stocking up on anything yet. I'm actually considering just getting another round of variety packs to taste-test after surgery again. Ordering from Bariatric Pal (their brand, Fusion, and Syntrax) and Unjury were both painless, they were prompt with the delivery and I had no issues. I'd order directly from them for those brands. And the Syntrax tastes so good that unless the IsoPure is significantly better, I'll just go with Syntrax because the IsoPure comes in glass bottles and I don't like getting those shipped, and don't want to have to go to the store for them. I have found that nonfat powdered milk is awesome for making the powdered shake mixes more portable, as some of the flavors don't taste right with just Water. That I'll probably just grab from Amazon. -
My surgery was 12/18/17. No regrets at all! I feel better every day. The only thing is, I tire out easily. I was extremely tired after a trip to the doc and nutritionist a week post op. It’s a 2 hour drive one way. Also, because I was a revision from lap band to Bypass, my surgery was 5 hrs long due to scar tissue and my surgeon took his time and didn’t rush things to get it done properly. That last was from his PA. She is impressed with his patience in surgery. That’s exactly what you want in a surgeon! I was on full liquids the first week with no issues. After my first post op, I was able to advance to soft, puréed foods. That’s working out well too. I won’t lie to you, that evening after surgery, I was sore. Obviously, my stomach hurt, it hurt to move! I had right shoulder pain from gas they put in your stomach for surgery. But the nurses I had were awesome and experienced in dealing with Bariatric patients. Even thought they came in during the night to check vital, I still got a good sleep. Felt so much better the next day. I walked, sat up on the chair for 3 hours and was able to eat jello. I saw my doctor, nutritionist and his PA all before going home. I hope this is as the information you were looking to get. My highest weight 309, I do not have my surgery day weight, thinking it was about 301. According to the doc’s office 1 week our 290! I’m happy with my results. I haven’t stepped on the scale, but plan to every Tuesday. I would be happy to answer any questions for you. Good luck on your decision.

NYC/LI/Tri-state area face to face Support Group Meeting

My visits to BariatricPal are very rare, as I'm a poor navigator. I just posted, however, a notice of the next Greater New York Bariatric Surgery Clothing Exchange (October 22). I'm so glad I did, or I wouldn't have made my way to this notice for the October 17 Face to Face meeting. It's now engraved on my calendar. Since the Face to Face is for our area, I hope I'm not out of bounds with the following link to the clothing exchange info?
