  1. Some women turn into Fertile Myrtle after bariatric surgery and significant weight loss. Here is the pregnancy forum: http://www.bariatricpal.com/forum/427-pregnancy-with-gastric-sleeve-surgery/

    weight

You'll get routine 'post-bariatric' blood work, so your team will make sure all the labs are OK. A lot of folks talk about moods and emotions right after getting the sleeve. Snoop around the threads! And I weigh once a week. NO MORE. The scale will make you crazier than you are anyway!
  3. I had the band and sleeve done on the same day! My surgeon has been doing bariatric surgery for 25+yrs and I trust his opinion. I'm glad I didn't have to go under twice.

    nutritionist

I belong to Kaiser and have no problems seeing the bariatric dietician or a nutritionist..In order to get services you need to be the squeaky wheel.....Yep, call them back and tell them that it's urgent you see the nut.....you might not get an appt today, but they can offer something this week or the next week. Let me know what happens when they call you back. If that doesn't work, then go to see your PCP and he/she will get you in.... Keep trying....

    Unflavored Protein Powder

I haven't tried it yet but a lot of people here rave about the unflavored powder from Bariatric Eating. I plan on trying it next. The unjury was gross to me. PURE Unflavored Protein Isolate - 21 servings per container - perfect for soup

    GETTING SCARED HELP

There, there, there now...........it will be alright in a minute. When they insert the IV needle in the back of your hand, you will feel a little prick. My first ex- husband was a little prick! For a fact, once they get you placed on the operating table, the anesthesiologist may ask you to do something like counting backward from 100. So here you go......100, 99, 98...........Wake up Rena. Wake up. You're all done and you did really well. We will be taking you to you room soon. Pain from the surgery was never an issue for me. My sleeve was my 12th operation under anesthetic, with the least pain and easiest recovery. I had four miniscule incisions, and only the biggest one was uncomfortable for a couple of days. You have multitudes of bariatric brothers and sisters here to encourage you. I am rooting for you and expecting to hear soon that you are on your way to re-inventing yourself. The post-op diet is a mighty inconvenient aspect of this process, but once you get past the first month and back on regular cooked food that tastes like something, you will be surprised at how fast time flies. Hang in there, kiddo.
  7. I’m super excited to start this journey. My insurance requires a 3 month program so I still have 2 months to go. I have watched many YouTube videos, researched websites, read books just so I will know what I’m getting myself into. I know everyone’s journey is different but many go through some of the same things. So my question is what advice would you give to someone who’s just getting started on this journey ? For example, I know hair loss seem to be common among Bariatric patients, would you suggest taking vitamins now ? Are there questions you would have asked your doctor but didn’t know to ask at the time ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated 😊

    Failed Bander

I had a lapband placed on Oct. 10, 2005. I lost 80 pounds but found there were always foods I could not tolerate. Foods were always getting stuck, despite following all the rules. I had my surgery in Reno and moved to Los Angeles. I work in the health care field, and we have a bariatric program. I notified our bariatric supervisor that I was vomiting all the time. She sent me to my PCP. She sent me to a surgeon who was intimidated by the UM department. They did an endoscopy and the GI specialist said it slipped. Then, I had an UGI. They said it was just high. I continued to vomit all the time and the surgeon was afraid to challenge the MD in charge of UM. I chose to change medical groups and had another UGI because I knew surgery would never happen at my place of employment. Hindsight is 20/20. I should have insisted they submit it and then appeal. I had a physiological reason for the medical complications and could have qualified for revision. I saw a surgeon who knew to remove the fluid from the band. That stopped the fear that I would choke to death. I was getting ready to have the band removed and have a VSG when Kaiser notified me the doctor could only remove the band. I was told to see another surgeon at Kaiser and on June 24, 2011, I did that. I was 155 pounds instead of the 134 I had gotten down to. He said I had to have surgery that next Monday, but due to my esophagus being so thin with the possibility of erosion, he said the VSG couldn't be done for a year. I had the band removed and was I depressed. I was told I would gain 50 pounds and to be careful with what I ate. I have a surgery date finally, but I got a call on Friday asking me to phone the surgeon's office. Of course, my imagination is running wild. Are they changing the date or are they simply scheduling the pre op visit? I decided to repeat the bariatric classes. I am not learning much, but I figure anything new that I learn is a plus. I keep having to purchase larger clothes, and what I have for casual wear and professional wear for work is no longer fitting. I have feelings of self hate, and I know that is not healthy. Ultimately, I want to be healthy and lean. I know it will happen soon, but the waiting game is a nightmare. There is one other girl in my class that also had to have a band removed. Misery sure does like company. Anyway, that is my surgery of success, failure, and then the hope of future success again. I am glad I found this forum and will visit it frequently. Joyce

    Seriously Depressed

Kim, I'm sorry to hear this. You're such a smart cookie. You know what to do: Seek advice and insights and treatment from your bariatric team and your PCP. But only you can pick up the phone and make those appointments. Please do that. You've done too good a job thus far to sabotage yourself now.

    Cold Cold Cold Feet

Nerves are a normal part of the process, I think, especially for a irreversible procedure. My feet got so cold, I cancelled my surgery before it was even scheduled. LOL I went to the seminar, met the coordinator of the bariatric program and the next day doctor's office started to call scheduling the preop tests, cardiology, pulmonology, etc. (such cooperation from the insurance company is not the norm from what I hear). Anyway, I went into a total panic, everything was happening too fast. I decided I needed to spend some time in therapy to find out where the panic reaction was from and so I am not going to be sleeved for at least six months. If you were not nervous, I would be worried that you hadn't thought it through enough. Extra socks and a few of those hot packs hunters use and you will be fine. Best to you and your husband. Robbie

    BM?

I didn't have to take a laxative prior to surgery (seems pretty common) so it was about 7 days for me and then I took something. During that time one of the bariatric NPs called to check in on me. She asked if I had been able to go yet, and said not to worry about it as there wasn't a whole lot in there anyway. Constipation is a bad issue for me with weight loss, even prior to surgery. None of my doctors seem to take it very seriously. I've had one say "Well the results justify theside affect right?". I told them that it depended on the day.
  13. As I'm sure you know, Chicagoland is HUGE LOL! Both my mom and I had our bands done at Northwestern Memorial hospital downtown. My mom had Dr. Eric Hungness and I had Dr. Alexander Nagle and we both were very happy. The surgeons and the nurse practitioner both do fills. My mom had her PS (tummy tuck and breast reduction) done by Dr. John Kim also at Northwestern and she thinks he is the cat's meow. He works extensively with bariatric surgical patients. Good luck and welcome to Chicago! kagead

    serum protein level dropping

well the vitamin levels arent back yet and i will discuss all of it with the surgeon next week. in the meantime I am increasing my protein by 10mg a day to 85mg. I did research and the recomended amount in some of the bariatric literature is 1 to 1.5 mg per kg of normal weight. That is a lot! for an 85 kg man that is 85- 127 gms a day!
  16. I meet w/ the surgeon next Tuesday and I need to write a convincing letter on "Why I want bariatric surgery". This letter will also be submitted to my insurance (BCBS of Ca Federal basic) and I want it to be really, really convincing being that my BMI is under 40 (37) with few co morbidities such as prediabetes and hyperlipidemia. PCOS testing tomorrow,if I'm lucky, I will be able to add that to my list of diagnoses. Anyone have any ideas as to what might be good to say? I have searched for some samples on here, but most of them are more appeal letters to insurance. Please help!
  17. I totally drink coffee without a problem! However, I have noticed that I can't stomach it black anymore (I used to drink it straight before surgery). Too acidic. But now, I just make protein lattes and knock out two birds with one stone - my coffee/caffeine fix, and some much-needed protein! I like the cappuccino mixes from American Bariatrics - I mix it with my coffee. But just plain ol' non-fat milk is just fine - and protein-rich as weill. Non-fat lattes at Starbucks are a great source of protein and caffeine and zip! Love them! You just need to log it in as calories.
  18. I first looked into this about 4 years ago and chickened out. Then I got laid off my job of 23 years. I found out how tough that job market is, especially when you are 100 lbs overweight and your self-confidence is in the toilet. After panicking and feeling really sorry for myself, I thought about this again and went to a seminar. That was all it took. Now I am so excited and can't wait! It's going to be awesome! We're going to feel great, have energy, renewed confidence, and we're going to knock 'em dead! So glad to hear you are doing this for yourself, too! God bless!
  19. I am on day 3 of 14 of the pre-op diet. The last two days must be clear liquids only. I am using Bariatric Advantage vanilla w/ skim and some fruit in it in my morning shake, then I have a Syntrax Nectar w/ water around lunch with a salad or steamed vegetables. Then in the evening I have been having Unjury chocolate splendor w/skim and steamed veggies or a salad and a chicken breast only if necessary. I also can have 2 control bars if needed which I think you can only get at the doctor's office. I am hovering around 1000 calories a day with that combination. Today is the first day I didn't have the 2 control bars, I had a half of one this morning and half in the afternoon.
  20. So i bought the bariatric vitamin powder that you mix with water and drink but that doesnt sit well with me . I also cant take one a days or centrum. I also tried a bariatric multi chew and the celebrate one. They all make me very ill. Sooooo Im back to gummies at this point I feel like it is better then nothing does anyoine else take gummie vitamins???? Im starting to get worried im not getting enough vitamins and I take the bariatric calcium chews and b12 dissolve ones 3 times a week. And I will start iron on the 28th doctor said to start a month post op.
  21. @@jesslo First of all congratulations on your loss so far, it is excellent. If you are not hitting your Protein goals you will stall out. You need to find a protein solution that works for you. I struggled hard those first few weeks with protein until I called my surgeon and told them. That call changed everything for me. The Bariatric nurse who had RNY herself suggested that I try Premier Protein ready made shakes. Each shake has 30 grams of protein, 1 gram of sugar and 160 calories. Most importantly they don't have that nasty protein flavor or the grit from protein powders. In the first few weeks, I had to milk them down with lactose free milk to thin them out. chocolate was and still is my favorite. I am now 22 months post op and I still drink one everyday. Protein keeps you healthy and actually assists in weight loss. Besides Water, it is critical for your success. You have to find a solution that will work for you but you must get your protein in to remain healthy through this process.
  22. Wow. Surgical regimes are so different. I had to inject blood thinners for a month even if I was running miles by then (I wasn't!) because of the serious risk of clots after bariatric surgery. I was prescribed a PPI for 4 weeks. I took it although I knew I was done with reflux within a few weeks of my sleeve, because my weight loss reduced my reflux symptoms so soon.
  23. all surgeons are different. If it becomes an issue you can get prescribed it after surgery. I dont know what surgery you are having but one other medication i was prescribed after surgery was a medication called Ursodiol for 1 year after surgery. It dissolves gall stones which many (not all) get after rapid weight loss. other than that i got hydrocodone in liquid form, The PPI medication for 1 month (they refused to renew it but i didnt need it anymore) Anti nausea medication that was a green liquid, constipation medication (only needed that for a week or so) and that was it.

    Protein chips

The Bariatric pal store has some crunchy protein snacks that are pretty good. There's one that's like sour cream and onion O's. Tastes really good and we're kind funyon like....I used to love those back in the day. Scratched that itch nicely.

    Elevated WBCs

Hi, does anyone know if it's common for bandsters to have elevated WBCs? I felt tired, so I had a CBC done because I thought I maybe anemic. The good news is that I'm not anemic, but my WBCs were elevated (15.8), which means I have some kind of infection. My family doctor and I could not figure out the source of this infection...I feel completely perfectly fine and nothing hurts. Just had a check up with my Bariatric doctor a couple of weeks ago to get a slight unfill and he said everything looked good. My family doctor was thinking maybe the "infection" and high WBCs are due to having a foreign body inside of me?? Has anyone experienced this??
