  1. You know I've been going though clothes sizes pretty fast. It would be cool if there was a place for bariatric patients to share and swap clothes. Just because we go through sizes so fast.     May 2022 surgery?

    I'm May 18 and start a one week liquid fast this Tuesday. My head is spinning from reading so many books/articles/blogs but the best information has come from reading everyone's comments in this forum. You guys are all so kind and helpful. Your comments and responses make me hopeful that I can pull this off and be a part of your supportive community! I'm 78 (very healthy) and hope to blaze a trail for older people who still want to stay active. Even just one lb. a year adds up to an "obese" BMI . Very discouraging. Good luck to all of the May surgeries . . . new life is right around the corner.

    I had the sleeve and now revision to bypass and 3 wks PO. It is so different then the sleeve I’m trying to figure out if I’m full or ate or drank too fast idk.

    I believe the average weight loss for bypass is 65% & sleeve is 60% of the weight you were to lose at the 3year mark. Which is a pretty negligible difference. Bypassers tend to lose more quickly at the beginning but that is no guarantee of how fast you will lose at first as we all lose at our own rate & everyone’s rate of loss slows as you get closer to your goal. You can have a bypass & still be a slow loser & vice versa. My surgeon went through each surgery, pros & cons, but recommended the sleeve based upon my weight loss & gain history, my basic diet & eating habits, & general health which is where I was leaning anyway. You’ll lose weight regardless of the surgery you chose if you work the program. I exceeded my goal with a sleeve but there are factors beyond your control, like genetics, which play a big part in where you’ll end up. Like you will lose more & faster simply because of your gender.

    Considering this procedure

    Kathleen congratulations on your surgery date! Since both of our surgeries were a couple of days ago I hope we both have a fast recovery! Overall my surgery went excellent, the only really big issue I had was back pain, they said it was from the gas that was used during surgery & was told walking would help. I ended up walking A LOT & thank goodness I did because I woke up this morning with no more back pain. Now Im just working on getting in fluids. How did your surgery go?

    You are starting the pre op diet already? Even before your surgery is scheduled possibily for mid June? seems very early especially with your low BMI. For most its 1 week or 2 weeks before surgery date. But of course i am no surgeon lmao. Good luck!! You loose weight pretty fast during the pre op diet. I lost i think 12lb during my two week liquid diet.

    Can't Decide!

    When I started my wls journey years ago, I went with the Lap Band, for a few reasons, but I feared Bypass because I thought it was too invasive and too permanent. Fast forward 7 years and I developed GERD and had my Band removed. Now I'm revising to Bypass due to GERD complications. After recently doing research on the Bypass for revision, I watched a YouTube video, and realized that my fear of Bypass was due to Lap Band marketing. So what I will say is, if you start out with Sleeve and have to be revised due to complications or other reasons, you might be "forced" into Bypass the same way I was. Now, no one knows what path their weight loss surgery journey takes us, but it's a theoretical "what if." I never thought I would end up with Bypass. But now I have no other options as far as weight loss and fixing GERD goes. And I've realized I probably could've made a better choice than Lap Band 9 years ago. When you actually research Bypass thoroughly, you'll find that although your disgestive tract is rerouted, it's reversible just like the Lap Band. Sleeve is revisable but not reversible. This video is quite informative and at around the 15 minute mark it discusses the marketing tactic that Lap Band used against Bypass. Best wishes on your journey!
  8. Yes you will eat again! I’m 9 weeks post op and I’m not cleared for a full diet but I still get to eat things that I enjoy and still fit my program. Just hang in there. Time moves so fast so take it one day at time. Once you start to loose the weight it will help motivate your brain to just keep going.

    Exercise after revision

    I am the opposite of you, I am also looking to get a revision, except I am worried about losing weight too fast. I want to slow but steady weight loss journey so my skin will not hang too much. So maybe slow weight loss is not such a bad thing after all.     7 weeks in-Stall/gaining weight

    This is what the study was looking at: if you kept calories the same, did you lose more weight with intermittent fasting. To that, the answer was a resounding NO. However, as you have pointed out, if eating only during certain hours makes you eat fewer calories overall, then you will have better results than if you eat more calories overall. I found that I was even colder with intermittent fasting (I only fasted on certain days). Of course, this was presurgery. I have noticed that I tend to eat a later breakfast or no breakfast other than very milky iced coffee, with an early lunch around 11:30. I used to stop eating by around 6, but now I need to eat a substantial snack before bed or I'll puke from my multivitamin. Of course, I am usually in bed by 9 or ten, although with all the time zone changes, who knows what time my body thinks it is?
  11. RE: intermittent fasting some people swear by it, some experience little to no effect. I sort of did 18/6 intermittent fasting without knowing it. Even before surgery I never/rarely had breakfast…my first meal/food intake was always after noon. Dunno why, was just always this way since around my university days (like 30 years ago!) . Eating in the morning tended to make me slow and sluggish in the first part of the day. Anyway, after surgery, i still didn’t eat in the morning, but then i also stopped any food intake after 6-7 pm…this because i had one horrible experience of regurgitating my stomach contents in my sleep, and it was horrible enough for me to make sure i went to bed on a completely EMPTY stomach. It is worth noting (maybe?) that my weight loss finally stopped (around 3-4 months into maintenance) when i started eating again past 7pm. BUT…im not sure this was solely or directly because of eating in a time-restricted window. My thinking is indirectly, because since I allowed myself more hours in the day to eat, i was able to get in more calories overall. There is only so much i can eat in 6 hours, due to stomach size restrictions. Extend this window by more, and i can inevitably eat more. Soooooo, this was my long-winded way of saying achieving calorie deficit is the tried and true way to lose weight. Period. Intermittent fasting, (at least for me, and some others i know) is a way to structure your day that helps to make it a little easier you to achieve that. Of course if one is going to eat very high calorie foods in their windows, then that would defeat the purpose. Good Luck! ❤️ P.S. sorry this was so long.
  12. I 100% agree with what @Queen ApisM said! You have lost a tremendous amount of weight in a short period of time. You will not lose 40lbs in a month unless you are the size of the people on My 600 Pound Life, which you are NOT. Everyone's journey is different. I had lost 50 lbs before surgery, so my weight loss after surgery wasn't that fast, and at 8 months out, I'm still losing (I have lost only 4 lbs this month, but that's still better than I would have done without surgery). I felt like my surgery center abandoned me too. I just kept pushing, and they did get back to me, and I was able to meet with the nutritionist, therapist, and an obesity medicine specialist.

    7 weeks in-Stall/gaining weight

    Hang in there. I am 3 months out and I've had one stall last a full 3 weeks and 2 others last about 1.5- 2 weeks. It stinks, but it will eventually break. My weight goes up and down by 1 or 2 pounds around these stalls too. Don't sweat it and just keep going. I agree about not doing intermittent fasting. I don't think you need to.
  14. What a journey it has been lately. I’ve gained nearly ten pounds in two weeks...slowly creeping up to a number I fear. At 5’1” I’m now 272 pounds, BMI 52.4. I originally was diagnosed with multiple right upper lobe PEs on 4/16. I was not originally admitted, just sent home on Xarelto. Fast forward to last week, I was admitted for a few days on the cardiology floor for a work up due to a return of symptoms. No new clots, but was diagnosed with Right Ventricle enlargement and Pulmonary Hypertension via a right heart cath. Got discharged, saw pulmonology yesterday, did a walk test, scheduled to come back for PFTs. Last night was feeling worse, high Hr and BP, severe headache, re admitted. Had some basic labs and tests today, they felt comfortable discharging me. Got home an hour ago, started feeling short of breath, dizzy, nauseous again. Checked BP and it’s really high. Going to rest a bit and re check. Don’t want to end up back in the hospital. So exhausted...sick of my weight slowly killing me. I have my initial consults with my Bariatric Surgeon, nutritionist and exercise specialist on Monday (it just got scheduled today) so there’s the beginning of a light, but I’m exhausted. Please pray my BP comes down and I don’t end up back at the hospital.

  16. 28 lbs in 6 weeks is more than 4 lbs a week. That's nothing to be upset about. Weight loss is fast initially, partly because you tend to lose a lot of water weight and you are do restricted initially as you recover from surgery. It will probably slow down as the months pass, but again, this isn't a race. If you get to 6 months and you haven't lost "most of the weight" it's not as if there is a magic switch that is flipped and you stop losing weight. Many people lose weight steadily for 18 months and beyond, though it slows down as you get closer to your goal weight. Excess weight is what you started at minus what you should be at, and most use the BMI as the guide for that. So, if you are 5 ft 1 inch, your healthy range is 98-132 lbs. Excess weight should be 238 (start weight at surgery) minus 132 (top of healthy range). So, your excess weight would around 106 lbs. I think the literature I read suggested the average lost in the first 6 months is around 30-40% of your excess weight, which would be 106 lb x 30% = 31.8 lbs, but I am not sure how accurate that percentage is. Again, these are rough numbers and the averages are just that - averages. Many people do better than this in 6 months. Some do worse. Some people lose "slowly" throughout and get to goal and beyond, while some people might lose fast initially and then not get to goal. Basically, no one can predict how it will go, including the surgeons.

    Taking Charge! C25K day 1!

    Yes! I am still running and I have been working on increasing speed over time. I did my first official race last weekend and finished the 5k in 28 minutes, which is fast for me. Now I am working to increase distance- my goal is to compete in a half marathon next year. I run on average about 15 miles or so every week, in addition to my daily spin classes.

    Wait, what????

    So guys. HOW did I lose 5 pounds in 1 day??? I mean, I was expecting to be a little heavier because of all the fluids from the IV for 2 days, but instead, I'm actually down 5 pounds??? I'm not knocking it, of course, but it caught me off guard lol I'll be weighing myself once a week. I refuse to do daily weigh ins and get upset when it fluctuates a pound or so either way. I've been struggling with gas pain, and thanks to the great suggestions, my husband went out and got me a heating pad and it's starting to help. Also having pain from the incisions, but I was already expecting that. And the PAIN from taking my pills was the worst of all. BUT, I started taking them with warm broth and it's been a game changer. Still takes me almost an hour to take them since I get full really fast, but at least it's pain free taking them now.

    You've lost 28 lbs in 7 weeks!!! That's FOUR POUNDS A WEEK! That's huge. You only lose super quickly at the very beginning because of water weight. After that its slows down, and you will have some stalls; that's normal and unavoidable. You did not really gain weight - your weight can go up a pound or two due to water weight, constipation, salty food, etc. The latest research on intermittent fasting is that it doesn't work, so you might read up on that - a brand new, well done study just came out. Hang in there... try to have realistic expectations!

Hi I am 7 weeks in after gastric sleeve- Till the week I started eating solid food at 5 weeks I was losing between 0.5 to 1 pound a day Then it started getting lower till it stalled 10 days ago and I actually gained 2 pounds over the last 10 days - I had taken water pills a couple of times as I noticed swelling around my ankles so I am not sure if the gain back is a result of that My calories intake are between 900 and 1100- Carbs are low- I do more proteins as needed- drink water sometimes 64 ounce sometimes 60 ounces- I workout 3 times/ week now I walk every day I also do intermittent fast 13/11 everyday I am getting very frustrated almost regretting the decision of the surgery as I historically lost more weight on diets the problem was that I always regained the weight I lost 35 pounds since I started and 28 pounds since the day of the surgery Any thoughts? Thank you
  21. Hi. I had surgery on 21-March. I was on my treadmill 3 days later, walking slowly but am back up to jogging or walking fast depending on daily motivation. I was cleared on Monday to start lifting weights (light <25lbs for the next two weeks and then I can increase) again, which I started, also on Monday. I feel great, but oh boy am I hungry - which I was expecting. I'm eating about 950 calories a day, but I'd be lying if I said my stomach isn't growling at days end and when I wake up. I eat 6 small meals a day, protein is around 80g/day and I drink about 100-110 oz of water daily. I am seriously scared to bump my calories to support the weight training. Has anyone begun weight training early on with their cardio? If so, how did you combat the hunger? My nutritionist said to increase my calories by 200 and I want to but I'm seriously so nervous I'm going to stall. I'm down 30ish pounds and have another 50 to go...

    Calories per day - 2 months post op?

    I wasn’t given a calorie goal either just portion sizes. Many aren’t given calorie goals & those who do get a variety of calorie goals. I know I wasn’t consuming many (around 400+/-) cause I did random checks out of curiosity. Got my protein in & a little vegetable at night & I was done. No room for anything else so I would never have met those high calorie goals some are given. Sometimes we need little more structure & guidance so I would check with your dietician to see what they recommend. Then treat it as a guide not a hard & fast rule. The protein & fluid goals are the most important.

    1200 calories should still be a significant calorie deficit for anyone who would qualify for this surgery. You may not lose as fast as someone eating like 800 but you will still lose. And many practices are encouraging closer to what you are eating because they believe that being at the lower calorie intake for too long damages your metabolism. What does your team say about your loss??

    Any Tips to speed up fat loss?

    Unfortunately that super fast loss only happens in the beginning and it slows down for everyone. The last few pounds From goal are the worst. In theory you can speed it up some by exercising more but it still may not be as fast as what you are looking for.
  25. LOL that stuff is horrible. It's best to drink it fast through a straw and cold. I actually didn't have to do it (only no food or drink after midnight) but I did. I didn't want to have to deal with going #2 at the hospital so I drank some early the afternoon before surgery and also only had clear liquids the day before surgery (again I didn't have to but I wanted to). I was very glad I did all that because I had no pooping issues at the hospital. They happy that I farted...LOL
