Yep, it's your first stall. Don't fret it. I'm in my second stall after almost 5 months. This one has lasted a long time, but I've already lost almost 75 pounds. I hit my first stall right on schedule...the dreaded 3 week stall. Stalls will happen over and over. You just have to go with the flow and keep doing the good stuff...exercising, eating healthy, feeling positive.

3 weeks post op only lost 15 lbs ????
Babbs replied to hootney1214's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
When was the last time you lost 15 lbs in 3 weeks? Do me a favor and just STAY OFF THE SCALE for a while and concentrate on your protein and liquids and getting healed up. You are also in the 3 week stall period of time. Your body has to adjust to the fast weight loss and take a little break. Stay the course, stay off the scale, and continue to heal. You're doing just fine -
Finally dropped 3 pounds after a 3 week stall. That was a tough 3 weeks. I questioned everything I did. I think I need to stay away from my scale this week -just get back to basics

How long did your STALL last?
Kindle replied to JaneJaneDoe's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I never weighed that much so the only stall I ever knew about was a month long around 2-3 months postop. If you don't want to stall, then follow your plan and don't step on the scale. I "avoided" the 3 week stall by not weighing between 2 and 6 weeks postop. -
How many times a week or month do you weigh yourself?
Kindle replied to gamecockfan864's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I only weighed myself a couple times/month in the beginning. I can actually remember each one.... day 1 of preop diet, day 11 of preop (to make sure I was losing what my surgeon required) surgery day postop day 5 (when I returned from Mexico) postop Day 11 (New Years Day) 6 weeks, 7 weeks, 10 weeks, and 3 months. Don't even know if I had the infamous 3 week stall! But I do know I gained 3 pounds between weeks 6 and 7 and still weighed the same at 10 weeks. Then randomly lost 13 pounds by the 3 month mark. Not weighing myself drove one of my friends crazy. She had bypass 8 years ago and she weighs daily. She couldn't believe I never knew my weight when she'd ask. It was fun torturing her ???? Ever since then I've weighed once/week so I have something to post on the challenges on here. I don't own a scale, so I weigh at work on the dog scale (after Breakfast and coffee), fully clothed with shoes or boots. No clue what my actual naked weight is. For me, NSV's mean so much more than numbers -
It must be a good week my friends because it appears that my "3 Week Stall" had also been defeated and i too have lost some pounds this week. I can't tell you how hard it truly was stocking to everything and not seeing any results but it's happened just as everyone promised. Thank you ALL for the sport and guidance you give ~♡♡~

1 month post op - no weight lost in the last 10 days
Djmohr replied to berkeleycurves's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is normal to stall, in fact I think they call it the 3 week stall although it happens to some people earlier and later than 3 weeks. It is your body realizing that you are making big changes and it is not quite sure if it should let go of fat stores in your body. The most important thing you can do is stay the course on the plan. Drink 64 oz. of Water per day, get your Protein in, take your Vitamins and keep on exercising. It will all of a sudden let go and you will start losing again. I know it is frustrating, I had a stall that lasted 4 weeks and a couple more that lasted a week. All of a sudden weight will drop off. Keep in mind it never comes off as quickly as that first month. Expect a couple of pounds a week if you are following the plan. Some people lose faster than that and it all depends on where you are. Heavier people usually lose more faster in the beginning. Everyone is different and you should not compare yourself to others. Also, if that scale is making you crazy, stay off of it. I actually weigh daily but I do not let the scale make me nuts. I use my clothing to gauge my weight loss. If my clothing is fitting loser, then I know I am losing inches. Good luck and stay positive! -
How many times a week or month do you weigh yourself?
BLERDgirl replied to gamecockfan864's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I only weigh myself once a month. Otherwise I drive myself crazy and start living for the scale. This is about health for me. I'd rather focus on eating properly and exercise. Some people weigh daily and don''t get upset. Some people do once a week. For newly sleeved people I would say wait at least 2 weeks or whenever your first post-op appointment is. There are too many factors that may impact that early weight. You could be retaining fluids from the IV, Your belly could be swollen from surgery. You could be constipated. Whatever your routine becomes do not let the scale become the be all, end all. Take your measurements (neck, boob, waist & hips). When you hit that 3 week stall seeing the difference in the measurements may help you better see your progress. When you do weight yourself try to do it at the same time of day and in the same location every time. -
DON'T REGRET sweetie this is the 3 Week Stall!!!!! And YES it truly sux on so many levels I'm just a month in and same as you the weight that i lost came off in the 1st 2weeks and THAT WAS IT! !!!! My surgery was December 11th and this is the first week that i lost again and only like a pound. If you are following the guidelines you'll start losing again, try not to get depressed and throw it all away. Keep positive the best you can, I've been told there are THREE possible Stalls ... now, again in ur 3rd month and once more at your 6month mark. So stay positive girl we can do this so many people have succeeded let's be part of the success together!!!!

The yo-yo effect?
Bobby46 replied to ngoycoanaya@gmail.com's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Its a lovely ole stall. I am 5 mths out and I've had 3 stalls. 1 lasted a week. 1 lasted 3 weeks and this one has been a month long. When I come off a stall I drop 4 or 5 pounds in a few days then it levels out to 2lbs a week. Usually if I up my calories a bit it will break the stall. The 3 week stall was awful....I did everything I can think of and I stayed stuck. This stall I'm on now I think is the result of hormones on top of a regular stall. And I started the stall after a week of having Christmas Cookies (just 1 or 2) everyday for about 5 days. This stall is killing me! But, I know it will eventually start coming off again in due time. I know I'm doing everything right so theres no reason for it other than my body adjusting to everything again. Part of the process is what I'm told -
Managing my expectations

Wow, thank you so much for all of your responses. I had to smile at the infamous 3 weeks stall... Here I am doing everything right up 1 pound down 1 pound up 1 pound down one pound. Grrr. And yes, I get up and weigh first thing. And I read everything I can find online which has been dead I can expect everything from 10 pounds a week to 10 pounds in a month. It suddenly occurred to me this morning that the surgery did not change the fact that you have to burn more than you consume. Guess a bikini is out for this summer. ???????????? -
My surgery was sept 3. I'm down 55 plus 10 pre op. My doc is not happy with my results and reduced my calorie intake to 600-700. I've also increased my exercise burning 600+ calories. I had a 3 week stall a month or two ago and a few shorter stalls throughout. I have finally started losing again with my reduced calorie intake and increased workouts. I have about 50 to go for my doctor's goal and 70 for my goal.

Managing my expectations
BLERDgirl replied to kimmeesue's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My advice is don't obsess over the weight. The scale is not your friend. Focus on eating healthy, getting your proteins and fluids in and finding some form of physical activity to do for 30 minutes each day. I only weigh myself once a t month at the doctors office. If I had a 3 week stall I was blissfully unaware. I am 4 mths out and every appointment has shown a loss. -
Any December 30th Sleevers ?!
WASunshinegal replied to hootney1214's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Alrighty. It's been 4 days without seeing much change on the scale. I've stalked the bulletin boards enough to have read about the mysterious 3 week stall but didn't expect it at 2.... At first I thought it was because things weren't moving through and miralax and prune juice assured me that wasn't the problem. I started looking for more "sciency" reasons other than some magic weight loss elf taking the 3rd week off. This is the best sciency reason I could find. I found this http://bariatricfacts.org/threads/the-three-week-stall.743/ - A nice lady named Diana Cox wrote that: A "stall" at this point is inevitable, and here is why. Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of Water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, your body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, you also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of a diet. As you stay in caloric deficit, however, your body starts to realize that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But your body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy -- like, to outrun a sabertooth tiger. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while as you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored. -
The 3 week stall is very common for RNY patients. I think it is for sleeve also, but don't quote me on that. For some it comes after just 2 weeks, for others it waits for 4 or 5 weeks after surgery. It seems to be the body's response to the major surgery and then the rapid early weight loss. It can be discouraging, but hang in there. Once your body adjusts, the weight will start coming off again. Exercise definitely helps getting over stalls. If you're not exercising (or you can't yet), do it as soon as you can. If you are exercising, try changing things up. It also really helps to log everything you eat during the day. It really helps to make sure you're not eating more than you think you are. Stay strong! You all can get through this!

3 WEEKS OUT AND ALREADY AT A STALL!?!

Do a search on 3 week stall. Lots of threads about this. -
So I am 7 weeks post op from the gastric sleeve ... I have worked to be diligent, but, I am facing the challenge of lactose intolerance and it is still hard for me to get the Water down that I am supposed to. so far, I have lost 60ish lbs ... which, I know is great, but, I am bummed this morning as I only lost 4 lbs this past week ... I don't cheat, pretty much eat only Protein (get close to 100 to 125 grams of protein daily), lift weights 3 days a weeks and cardio 6 days a week ... I know about the 3 week stall and I experienced that, am I just being too hard on myself, will there be weeks like this where I don't lose as much? I know everyone is different, but, what is a realistic goal to lose each week pound wise .... is 4-5 lbs great or should I expect more? Thanks everyone for your continued support.

Any one got a Plateau around week 3,4?
Babbs replied to Luka Wood's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yup, completely normal. Search "The Dreaded 3 Week Stall" either on Google or these forums and you will find much information about why it happens and how common it is. This won't be your last, either. Best advice is to not weigh yourself every day as to avoid the annoying fluctuations that normally happen as we go through this. I know it's tempting to weigh everyday in the beginning as the weight is just falling off, but soon your body adjusts and the weight loss starts to even out a little and slow down. Keep up the good work! -
Oh i so know what you are going through. I hit a 3 week stall at 2 weeks post op. This is very common. I am exactly 3 months post op and have lost 55 pounds. I have trouble getting all of my protein and water in. My skin is dry, my hair is coming out and i am having trouble with constipation. But with all of that being said, 55 pounds is amazing in 3 months. I promise you it will get better. I think once your constipation is resolved, a lot of the other issues you mentioned will resolve as well. Drink 1 capful of Miralax daily in 8 ounces of fluid. Your constipation will improve, your stall will break and your tummy will allow you to eat and drink what you need to to meet your protein and water goals. Smile, it gets better, I promise! I know from experience. Smile!!!

In addition to the dreaded 3 week stall you may have pin pointed why the scale is showing a weight gain; you're bloated and constipated. There are many solutions to that; colace stool softener, milk of magnesia, miralax, benefiber, prune juice, a tsp of epsom salt in organic grapefruit juice to name just a few. Since you can't exercise, walk. Walk at least 30 minutes every day and drink you water/fluids. It will all get the plumbing moving. Most importantly stay off the scale. It will make you insane. Take your measurements instead. and every month take them again. Even when you are stalling if you are on program, the measurements will change when the scale doesn't.

Looks like we are all moving along in this journey with pretty similar stories. 3 weeks stalls, horrible nausea and throwing up here and there. I feel so at home in our gladiator club. Thank you everyone, I feel like I belong! Lol!

Have to Share for Those Frustrated with Stall
Lauriep replied to Susanjoyce392's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
so I am looking for some info on stalls? I had what I understand is the normal: 3 week stall after 3 weeks post op which was the week of Thanksgiving. (surgery date 11/3/14). Then I loss 4 lbs in like 2 days. BUT.... there I sit. it's been 6 weeks. I weigh every day I know I shouldn't and will probably stop that at my 3 month follow up. But glad that I am for now. I will lose 2 lbs, then gain 3, lose 1 for 3 days straight and gain it back. And for days the scale just doesn't move. I was a little worried before I had the surgery that I would fall into this group of people who lost like 50 lbs and never another one and am now worried that's me. I know it's soon but 4 weeks and no progress is wearing me thin, and I wish that was literally! After about 3 weeks into this stall, I started to look at what I was eating and the lack of exercise I was enjoying (I did really well the first few weeks and then life got in the way so fell behind in my visits to the gym). Started walking morning and night, started really paying attention to Protein count and removing some bad habits I realized I'd picked up. For a full week I've watched. Still nothing. So has anyone else experienced this length of a stall? I know I am doing something wrong, I'll not blame anything but my own activities, but I am just not sure what it is. My surgeon said at my 3 week follow up that I will probably lose 20 lbs before my next one, and I was surprised by that low # (doesn't eveyone love how much falls off right after surgery?!) but wow, now? I'll be looking at the 4 lbs I lost right after that and that's it. Help? -
Does weight loss usually plateau at some point?
Iowa_summergirl posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some of my family members think I'm losing too much too fast. I've been pretty fortunate in that the weight has steadily come off (except for the traditional 2-3 week stall). Does the loss eventually pretty much stop or plateau? What do you do if it keeps coming off and you can't keep up with your calorie intake? I'm 3 months out, down 42 lbs, (74 since my highest weight). I struggle with sliming, so some days I don't get a good amount of calories. Other days I do fine. Worrying for nothing??
