  1. I know most of you are not doctors, but perhaps you can speculate about something that just happened to me. For the past year, I have maintained within a 3-4 lb range, never deviating. About six weeks ago, within three days I had gained seven pounds to my highest weight in about two years. I dismissed it as water retention because I hadn't changed my diet or any medications, but for the next six weeks I stayed five to seven pounds above my baseline, so I began dieting and drinking more water but to no avail. I couldn't figure out how it could be from food because I log calories every day and there were no changes in calories or types of foods that I ate. Then a few days ago, I had a horrible mood swing -- so bad a depression that my family and friends were really worried about me -- and they said they had never seen me act like that before. I recovered from it but the following day, I began vomiting out of nowhere, tons of water, something that has never happened before since WLS and was something I can't ever recall happening even before WLS. And then for these past few recent days, I'm exactly back to where I was for the entire year -- within that 3-4 lb range again. The five to seven pound gain is gone. I'm post-menopausal so it's not hormonal I think. No dietary changes. No new medications or getting off old ones. No changes in activities and exercise. The massive weight gain seems to have just "happened," remained in my body for weeks, then dispersed. And possibly could have caused a serious mood swing. Oh, and for an annual checkup I had an EKG which was normal so it has nothing to do with my heart. And I had a recent brain scan six months ago that showed no abnormalities. My blood work also is normal.
  2. Congrats to all on a fast and uneventful surgery. I'm almost 1 week out. Everyday is different. I'm very low energy but trying to stick with keto diet, at least in the beginning because I lose weight so slow normally. I have some health issues which aren't helping the low energy issue. Sometimes I'm surprised I'm hungry. I heard that generally in the first stages you aren't that hungry. The good news is having 4 oz of protein drink gets rid of the hunger. But its a good thing my refridge and pantry are emptied of anything I shouldn't be eating right now! I suspect I'm much older than a lot of people on this board.

    Advice on gas pain

Walking is best. Keep them short, a lap or two depending on the size of the ward, three or four times a day. I’d walk to the sitting room at the end of the ward, sit for a couple of minutes & walk back (Well I did until I stumbled upon the man in his badly tied surgical gown standing in front of the window so the sun shone threw the gown highlighting all his ‘attributes’.)Though you may find you spend a lot of that first 24-48 hours sleeping. Gas X helps too. Listen to your body if it says rest, rest. Congrats on your surgery & all the best for the rest of your recovery.

    Skin

according to your profile, you're hoping to lose about 150 lbs, so yes, you'll almost certainly have loose skin. Fortunately, most of us are able to hide it pretty well by the way we dress. I'm sure no one noticed mine (well, except my husband...). I originally lost 235 lbs, so I had a ton of it (I've since had it removed since it was driving me nuts, even though no one could see it). Honestly, I think I can speak for most vets who've lost 100+ lbs that we'd take the lose skin any day of the week over being morbidly obese again. ANY DAY!!!

    After Care

Congrats on your approval. Your medical team (surgeon & dietician) should provide you with a plan to follow pre & post surgery. It should detail what foods you can eat & when (what stage) & usually includes recommendations for portion sizes, your carb, sugar &/or fat intake, protein & fluid goals & calorie goals or combinations of these requirements. (Mine was only portion size & protein& fluid goals.) If they don’t ask for one & ask for the additional guidelines if you’d feel more confident with more guidance. Plans can be different surgeon to surgeon & it is always best to follow the plan you are given. Generally, in weeks 3 & 4 you are in the purée stage. You can purée most things with sufficient liquids (gravy, stock, milk, water, Mayo, etc.) to get them to a thick gloopy texture. Still more swallow then chew. In weeks 5 & 6 you are in the soft food stage. Think tender, fall off the bone slow cooked meats, minced meat dishes with gravies or sauces, thick meat & vegetable soups. More chew & enough liquid to lubricate & allow you to swallow easily. Your plan may be different. There may be foods in your plan you can’t tolerate as your tummy can be fussy at first & your taste buds &/or sense of smell can become temporarily sensitive. I’m not a regular exerciser - never really enjoyed it, never reached the euphoric stare people talk about. I walked in the beginning. Then did some resistance bands. Still do some general stretching every day. Doing standing push ups at the moment too. I do a lot of incidental activity: do multiple trips up & down my stairs (why do it in one load when you can do 2 or 3), park further away from where I’m going, walk up escalators & travelators, jog up stairs, etc. Plus my low blood pressure (70s over 60s) means I get tired & weak more quickly when doing anything more strenuous. Also can cause a hypoglycaemic episode. Not a lot of fun so I’m careful.

    Booty

Google is your friend. Stacks of exercises to tone your glutes available with a simple search. It can also be helpful to get a short program at a gym or with a person trainer to find out the best workout for you & to ensure you’re doing them correctly & not risking potential injury. Then you can do them at home. Can be a little pricy but sometimes they offer deals. You can pick up weights, resistance bands etc. pretty cheaply. I got my bands for $10 at Kmart in Australia. Remember you won’t be able to do a lot for a few weeks while your healing & recovering from the surgery. Walking will be your friend for that first month or so.
  7. I had stage 2 (lipo) done today. I'm feeling good. The leftover Percocet from stage 1 is a blessing. Dr. gave ok to use it instead of the typical prescribed Vicodin. I will probably have a small amount of loose skin on the thigh gap and love handle areas but nothing that a tiny nip/tuck won't take care of. I'll post pictures in a couple of months when most of the swelling is gone. As far as the TT recovery (7 wpo), I can now ride my bike; cough/sneeze/laugh without tearing up; but still no heavy lifting. I consider house cleaning heavy lifting (wink, wink) so I guess hubby will have several more weeks of maid duty. I was still wearing a compress garment 23 hours a day even though I don't have to wear it more than 12 hours. Dr. said the longer the better and I don't mind it since it's not summer yet. Now I'm back to wearing it 24/7. Dr. said plan on the scar revision this fall and my scar is healing nicely.

Hey everyone, I have some exciting news, I got approved for gastric bypass this past Monday and, my surgery date is next month on the 22nd. I was just wondering what kinds of exercises that you guys have done and that you've had success in achieving also, I do have PCOS so I was just wondering for my fellow cysters how much weight have you guys lost in 2-12 months and what was your weight loss each month. I was also wondering what types of food did you guys eat after 2 weeks like what could you guys tolerate and, very lastly what can I expect before, during, and after my surgery?
  9. Hi, I had my surgery February 17 and am in my two week liquid diet and starting to not like anything so it’s hard to get enough protein. Any tips? Thanks

Am I eating to much ?

We all lose at different rates. What does your doctor say about your rate of loss? If you truly are sticking to your plan you may be experiencing a stall which can last several weeks. There is nothing to do or change, the stall will pass.

Meg, beautifully stated. My big day is tomorrow o also am filled with a million emotions today….. I wish you all the best in your journey. I am just finishing my preop. I don’t think I cheated other than an extra ounce here or there of fish. I figure I’m going through all this don’t cheat! I’m already down almost 17 pounds in two weeks. I feel like one of my belts is gone. I’m very nervous about anesthesia due to my apnea … but once the surgery is over I can tackle the next obstacle… one at a time. Lots of xo to everyone going in March!

I love you for this reply! Thank you for telling me it is water weight, it probably is. I haven't had a good bm since then either. I am pushing fluids today and I have lemons at home that I will add tonight. Good luck on your diet, you can do it. I had cut out caffeine 2 weeks prior and sugar one week prior and I do believe that helped me to adjust without headaches or pain. Cheers to being in the 5'11 club!! We're gonna rock these healthy bodies in due time.

So, I cheated on my 2 week liquid diet on Saturday and now the scale is back up 4lbs that didn't drop after going back to the diet full force Sunday. My advice, don't go off it. I only had a bowl of egg drop soup and a salad at PF Changs and here I am regretting it. In my opinion, it is not worth it to go off the 2 week diet - because it feels really good to see the scale moving down ( I was going down 2 solid lbs. a day before). This diet is totally doable. Best of luck to everyone!

I've done a lousy job with the two-week LS diet, and I'm extremely nervous that my surgeon won't operate. I'm constantly telling myself that worrying won't help, he'll either proceed or he won't, all I can do now is be super-strict about the no-solids-for-48-hours-prior rule.

MARCH 21ST HERE!!! Super pumped up and ready.🤩 My pre-op diet starts on the 11th, but that falls on a Friday so I think I am going to start it sooner. I have always felt like sticking with diets, or healthy eating over the weekends is harder so I feel this will be the same. I think starting during the week and getting into a groove before hitting the weekend will be beneficial for me. Good luck to all of us!

    Loss of voice

Remember you did have something sent down your throat during the surgery and it may just be a little inflamed. I had a hoarse throat for a week or so but it ended up just fine. The device that goes down the throat is what they use to shape your poach so they can cut and staple it from outside the stomach.

For my surgeon's program I'm on full liquids week 1 and 2, pureed 3 and 4, and soft solids 5 and 6. So no regular diet until week 7.

    Long term success

Tomorrow is my three-year anniversary. I stayed at my goal weight pretty easily for the first 18 months but gained about 20 pounds over the past year. I'm eating the same things as I did during the first year, but more of them. My diet is still high protein, low carb, low fat, and no sugar (or alcohol). I'm satisfied with my current weight, but now I really need to be careful to make sure I don't creep up. It's definitely harder than it was during the first 18 months or so, but I'll never go back to my old way of eating (nor anywhere near my previous weight).

    First time

Mine completely went away the first three years after surgery. I have reflux issues occasionally again now, but they're mild - nothing some Tums or Rolaids won't knock out. gastric bypass IS known to improve if not outright cure GERD for most people (not all - but most people)

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Hello everyone! We are now at three years since surgery, and I wanted to see how you all are doing? I'm doing okay, but not great. I've gained about 20 pounds in the past year, and I'm not very happy about it. I could make excuses (lockdown, stress, etc.), but the reality is that I have nobody to blame but myself. It's so much easier to eat at this point, and I acknowledged that I have overindulged. I'm still at a reasonable weight, but I know that I have to be very careful so I don't creep up slowly from here. I would ideally like to lose 10-15 pounds, but I'm not going to beat myself up if I don't. I'm still much healthier and more active than I was before surgery. I hope everyone else is doing well!

    HELLO

I kind of feel like the prep, surgery, and recovery are like having a baby. There’s a lot of thinking and planning all for one event that lasts a couple of a few hours, then recovery for a few weeks. The tough part is raising “your child” for the rest of your life. It can be as fun or boring as you make it.

    Pre Operative Chaos and Confusion

Hello! I was pre-approved in July 2021 too. My insurance required 6 months of nutritional classes which I started the first week in August and finished first week of January 2022. I’m in Anaheim! So we’re neighbors! After the nutritional class which was all done through Zoom there was a zoom doctors talk. And a phone psych consult. Lots of hoops and loops! I thought I’d get a surgery date first and then do the pre-op testing needed and the surgical clearance but apparently it’s the other way around as they have told me. I know that the Covid omicron surge may have muddled the wait times. and that my place Smart Dimensions has a lot ALOT of patients in the queues. I wish the process could have been explained more straightforwardly and been more expedient. I have some pre-op procedures on the 1st, chest x-ray and upper GI and clearance but I haven’t been given a walk-through or instructions about a liquid diet beforehand. Will that be next? Lol! I’m ready for the next hoop! Good Luck with your upcoming surgery!
  24. I have my pre-op procedures of upper GI and chest X-ray on Tuesday morning and my pre-op primary care physician appointment for clearance on Tuesday afternoon. I’m getting closer! After I had finished my nutritional class requirements at the first of January I thought surgery was imminent as we were told in the doctor talk that we were about a month away. But as I’ve read on here, enjoy the journey. Don’t rush. Be patient. Be gentle. I haven’t been very patient which is very evident by how little I chewed my food! I’ve been working on that. I’m turning 60 this week! I am excited that this milestone and my wls are close together. I feel ready for some good changes. My bmi is 44. I think at my highest weight it was 46. I feel so roly-poly. I want to kick my type 2 diabetes to the curb. I want to be able to be more active without the constant pain in my arthritic knees and ankles. I want to keep up with my two little granddaughters. I want to fit into seats! I am very glad to find this app/support group. My doc said that they had one on Facebook but I’ve given up that so I was glad to find this better alternative.

    Anyone in MINNESOTA?

No, I was ok . Very tired and sore but It was tolerable. No drains for me. That might be for bypass I had the sleeve. My husband took only I day off and I was ok. I didn't do stairs. Alot of sleeping and walking and of course trying to get liquids in. I have a high energy job so I took 5 weeks off and I was good going back. It took alot out of me the first couple days back. I love premeir protein. I had to water them down after surgery but they have so many flavors that you don't get too bored. All flavors except the peanut butter( I didn't like that one ) were really good. No problem asking questions. I had so many also
